Palo Alto Festival of Arts The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, is a juried art festival held annually in late August. The festival, brought to you in 2016 by presenting sponsor Palo Alto Medical Foundation, draws more than 170,000 people over a Saturday and Sunday weekend. The town’s well-known University Avenue becomes a street fair with more than 300 fine art purveyors, food and wine booths, along with staged entertainers bringing you a variety of music throughout the event.

Leadership Palo Alto Leadership Palo Alto provides participants an opportunity to connect with their community and better understand the components of government, public safety, business community, economic climate, education, the environment and sustainability and health care system. The goal of the program is to identify and motivate potential community leaders to become involved in the community and gain an understanding of its needs and challenges. Graduates have found the program to be invaluable to enhancing their careers and forming lasting relationships with fellow classmates. Leadership Palo Alto alumni are challenged to use the knowledge and leadership skills they gain through the program and apply them to enhancing Palo Alto’s quality of life. Applicants chosen for the 2016-2017 program will have the unique opportunity to develop their potential for public responsibility. Each of the 10 full-day monthly sessions are

designed to inform, motivate and challenge participants and provide a unique behind-the-scenes perspective. Each session locations and speakers are selected to enhance and compliment the topic of that particular session. Topics include: • Local government • Stanford • Education • Arts & culture • Environment & sustainability • Economy & business

• Transportation • Housing • Nonprofits • Health care & wellness • Public safety • Media

Health Care Tips for Healthy Snacks

For more information, visit www.pamf.org

By Valerie Spier

Palo Alto Medical Foundation Snacks can be an important part of a nutritious and balanced diet, but you do need to be thoughtful about the quality and quantity of snacks. It’s very easy to overdo it, and too many snacks can easily derail efforts to maintain a healthy weight. Healthy snacks can benefit you in several ways. They can: • Help meet energy needs, especially for children and athletes • Round out the daily nutrients you need to stay healthy • Bridge the gap between meals (if you are allowing about six hours between meals) • Help prevent low blood sugar and overeating

What is a healthy snack? A healthy snack is a small amount of food or a beverage (approximately 100 to 150 calories) you have between meals. Include any beverages toward your daily calorie count, as many specialty coffee drinks and smoothies are packed with sugar and calories. To help pick the right snacks, start by looking at your diet and what you eat every day to help you determine nutritional gaps. Most people don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables; choosing a snack from that food group is always a good option. Here are some healthy snack ideas (that all contain about 100 to 150 calories) from the five food groups to help you balance your nutritional needs:

Stanford Children’s Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford Children’s Health, with Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at its core, is the largest Bay Area health care enterprise exclusively dedicated to children and expectant mothers. Long recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s best, the hospital is a leader in world-class, nurturing care and extraordinary outcomes in every pediatric and obstetric specialty, with care ranging from the routine to rare, regardless ➝

corn soup; wasabi peas or spicy garbanzo beans; half-a-cup of oatmeal; three cups of airpopped popcorn; three falafel; one serving (15 to 30 grams of carbohydrates) of whole-grain crackers Protein: one hard-boiled egg; 1 to 2 ounces of leftover meat, fish or poultry, beef or turkey jerky, canned tuna, sardines, oysters or kippers; a handful of nuts or seeds; a cup of bean or lentil soup or marinated tofu (check serving size on package to limit to 100 to 150 calories) For beverages, choose unsweetened options such as herbal or green iced or hot teas, sparkling water or water flavored with a slice or fruit or cucumber to help keep your calorie intake on track.

Avoid the snack attack How can you make sure you snack sensibly, not mindlessly? The best approach is to think about whether you really need a snack. Before you just grab a snack, determine if you are really hungry. For example, you might think you want something to eat but are actually thirsty. Try drinking an unsweetened beverage first. Or you might be bored or stressed. Consider going for a quick walk outside, do a couple of stretches or deep breathing if you are at work or enjoy a chat with a friend before eating something. Shopping ahead for healthy snacks and stocking the fridge with cut-up, prepared fruits and vegetables for easy access is also a good plan. Make tea or fruit-flavored waters and have them ready in the fridge to drink.

Dairy (to meet calcium needs): glass of milk, kefir, almond or soy milk; flavored yogurt; cottage or ricotta cheese with fruit or veggies; one portion of low-fat string cheese; Parmesan cheese crisps (grated cheese, baked in the oven), kale chips or edamame

Combining a carbohydrate-containing food with a low-carb food, such as eating an apple with a piece of cheese, is a great way to enjoy a healthy snack that will help keep you feeling full longer. Avoid traditional snack foods such as chips that are high in calories but low in nutritional value.

Fruit: fruit kebab; one small piece of whole, seasonal fruit; two tablespoons of dried fruit; unsweetened applesauce, 4 to 6 ounce fruit smoothie or dehydrated fruit crisps

Valerie Spier, MPH, R.D., CDE, is a registered dietitian and diabetes educator at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation

Vegetables: raw or roasted vegetables; one cup of vegetable or minestrone soup; endive or lettuce wrap; veggie smoothie (limit addins); salad or pickled vegetables (quantities for veggie snacks: unlimited non-starchy vegetables, half a cup of starchy vegetables) Carbohydrates/starch: one cup of quinoa or other grain-based salad; cup of butternut or

Nonprofits FINDING YOUR VOLUNTEER FIT WHEN YOU ARE NEW IN TOWN Palo Alto is not only home to some of the brightest, most innovative people in the world, but it is also home to an incredible army of volunteers who feed and clothe the homeless, drive elderly residents to doctor’s appointments or guide children through the wonders of the Junior Zoo. Volunteers improve and support the community with their commitment to helping others. The benefits of volunteering are two-fold; not just for the agency served, but also for the volunteer. There is joy in serving others and making a difference in the community. With the right fit, the experience can be life changing.

followed my entire life. Volunteering has always been a part of me. I find a need and I fill it.” She continues to serve the homeless by collecting clothing to distribute to those in need and working at the local food bank. She also serves outside of the Palo Alto area through her involvement with Palo Alto University Rotary Club. “Last year I traveled to El Salvador with a team to assess the needs of the village of Caluco, a village Rotary has been partnering with for the past 10 years,” she added. As executive director at Deborah’s Palm, Cooney has created a welcoming and comfortable place for women to achieve personal growth, learn practical skills and find a friend or two in the process. At Deborah’s Palm, women can find help when dealing with life’s unexpected challenges, whether experiencing a job loss, a death in the family, a difficult health diagnosis or the end of a relationship. The staff at Deborah’s Palm has the resources and a large group of dedicated volunteers to help.

Women gather at the Saturday Open House at Deborah’s Palm

Katie Cooney, executive director of Deborah’s Palm, a local women’s center, learned that firsthand at an early age. “Whenever my mom would see someone sitting alone in a park or on the playground, she would tell us to go and ask that child to play,” she said. “She always wanted to help others. That was just ingrained in my family, growing up.” When Cooney went off to college she found that volunteering helped her connect with other people as well. “When I was a sophomore at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, I decided to find an organization where I could volunteer and meet new people,” Cooney said. “I found an opportunity at the Newman Catholic Center. I spent the first year helping another student cook meals for the homeless.” Twice a month, the two would cook the meals and drive downtown to a vacant parking lot where they distributed the meals to a mostly male population. “It was an eye opener for me,” Cooney added. “It was there that I first became familiar with the dire straights of people who are mentally ill and on the streets.” After that year, she became more involved with the community and joined others in outreach to the elderly community and serving others. “I found it was a great place to serve and to meet some wonderful life-long friends,” she said. “It set me on a course that I have

A a solid core of more than 65 volunteers “woman” the front desk Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Cooney noted. “They answer the phone, welcome newcomers and keep our class and activities flyers up to date.” Cooney is quick to add how important volunteers are to the organization. Volunteers help with special events such as the Holiday Bazaar, galas and the Fall Open House. They tend the garden, write pieces for newsletters and social media. Volunteers manage the blog, the operations of the building and assist with fundraising and development – specifically grant sourcing and writing. “We connect with most of our volunteers online through VolunteerMatch.org,” she noted. Founded in1998, VolunteerMatch.org is the Web’s largest volunteer network, supporting more than 100,000 nonprofits. Those who want to volunteer can search geographically to find volunteer opportunities. There are currently over 1,100 volunteer opportunities in the Palo Alto area. Volunteering is often about finding the right fit, the place where you can best utilize your skills and talents. Sometimes, it’s just about holding a hand, offering a warm cup of tea or finding the beauty in others. Sharing a smile or even a tear or two can give comfort to someone who is going through a difficult time in life. “Volunteering gives you a purpose, and a sense of community,” Cooney added. “I think that’s why once people start volunteering they never stop.” In today’s high-tech world, people communicate through texting, email and Skype, but nothing will ever replace the need for human contact or the need to help one another in times of crisis. ◆

Co-Working Spaces THE SHARING ECONOMY In the heart of Silicon Valley – a place that is home to some of the world’s most creative innovators and entrepreneurs – the shared economy has opened its doors to a brand new marketplace. One of those innovators is Vibhu Norby, co-founder and CEO at b8ta, a software-powered retail showroom for Internet of Things (IoT) products. Norby and the founders of b8ta noticed a retail world where big, hardware product brands with the most dollars were keeping out small upstarts. They identified this problem and then created a strategy to solve it. “To me, the shared economy is ultimately about fixing inequality in markets. Where there is inequality — whether created by law or culture or history — marketplaces are arising on the Internet and in the offline world that are fundamentally changing how we live,” Norby said. b8ta is one of those marketplaces. As the first of its kind, this Palo Alto-based retail showroom displays and sells a range of IoT products. According to Norby, products generally fall into one of four categories: connected home, electric transportation, smart toys, and sensory augmentation devices. Most of the products are also sold online and many, prior to b8ta, were exclusively available through ecommerce channels. But Norby understands that with emerging technologies and IoT products, consumers want to try what they’re buying before they decide to purchase. “Everything in b8ta is featured out-of-box and can be demoed by customers. Our b8ta testers are on-site to answer the most difficult questions,” Norby said.

Since opening in December 2015, b8ta has enjoyed immediate success. “The response has been tremendous. Customers engage with tens of thousands of products a week in our store,” Norby added. “We get visitors from across the globe who want to see what the future looks like.” After a simple online sign-up process, b8ta evaluates each product before accepting to display them in its showroom. “Once a company has signed up, they send us a demo product or sit down with us. If a product checks out, we offer space for a couple weeks in the store. As products succeed, we allow them to stay longer with us. If they don’t, we fill the space with something new,” Norby said. “The process is designed to bring in new products consistently, but also ensure that the quality stays high over time. We aim to introduce four to five new products twice a month, so that each time visitors come in, they discover something new.” There may be large retailers that offer showrooms for their product line but b8ta is unique in that it offers space to new products from both big and small companies and treats them equally. “There’s no other store like this in the entire world. b8ta is the only software-powered retailer, and many of the products we showcase aren’t available anywhere else,” Norby added. The emergence of the shared economy has impacted transportation, product delivery, work spaces, vacation rentals, and more. At b8ta, it has also opened up a marketplace to products not typically found offline with the hope of changing how physical retail works for both manufacturers and consumers. ◆

“MEAT, BONES & SOILED PAPER NEEDED IN GREEN CARTS” — Zak Zero, Zero Waste Guy Zak Zero loves reducing waste. Like all serious fans, he’s just bursting to share his knowledge: “My Zero Waste Detector shows high levels of composting activity throughout Palo Alto! But the data also shows that we can optimize the results of Palo Alto’s food scraps collection program by adding meat, bones and soiled paper to the green cart.” Join Zak Zero and your neighbors — put these items in your green compost cart:
