Those attending the Polk County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday, Jan. 9 will witness a premiere of the new “Welcome to Polk County” video.

The video touts Polk County as a great place to live and work, said Polk County Economic Development and Tourism Director Libbie Johnson.

“The video project was recently completed and shows off the county’s natural resources, entrepreneurial pride, school and hospital systems and tourism events, as well as highlighting the area’s quality of life,” Johnson said.

Accident slows I-26 traffic

One lane of Interstate 26 eastbound was closed for several hours in Polk County Friday afternoon, Jan. 6 after a tractor-trailer crashed at mile marker 64.5 near Saluda.

The tractor-trailer apparently hit the guard rail,and overturned, according to reports.

Polk County sheriff’s deputies, emergency medical service personnel and the N.C. Highway Patrol were at the scene.

No information was available at press time about whether any other vehicles were involved or whether anyone was injured in the incident.

New Rep. Walend sworn in Rep. Trudi Walend, who was chosen to replace outgoing Rep. David Guice in a special election in House District 113, which includes Polk County, was sworn in on Wednesday, Jan. 4 on the floor of the North Carolina House of Representatives. Walend previously served in the House for 10 years.

“I am honored to once again serve the citizens of my district,”

said Walend.

“We are lucky to have Rep. Walend back in the House,” said House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg). “She was an effective legislator during her previous terms here, and I’m confident she will continue that trend as she begins her new term.”

In addition to her husband, Regina is survived by her beloved daughter, Kathleen, a senior at the University of Texas at Austin and a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic swimming team; devoted brothers, Frank and Leo Grant; sister-in-law, Diane Grant; and mother-in-law, Jeanette Hersey.

A requiem mass will be offered for Regina at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tryon on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

She was kind as she was fair, for beauty lives with kindness.

Regina Hersey

Regina Grant Hersey, 65, wife of Brian E. Hersey, died Jan. 4, 2012, after a courageous struggle with cancer. Through her deep faith and relationship with God she stitched love, joy and humor throughout the quilt of friends she counted as her extended family.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y. on March 6, 1946, she was a graduate of Manhattanville College. She enjoyed a long and successful career in publishing, rising to the position of assistant managing editor at Reader’s Digest. She was the third female issue editor in the Digest’s history.

After leaving the Digest following her move to Atlanta in 1988, Regina became series editor for Guideposts Books’ long-running “Grace Chapel Inn” book series.

She also edited numerous books,

First St. Luke’s/Blood Connection blood drive held Jan. 5 Mary Duncan finishes giving her pint of blood with help from Susan Simpson of The Blood Connection at a blood drive held Thursday, Jan. 5 at St. Luke’s Hospital.

About 35 area residents had given blood by about 3:30 p.m. last Thursday. Organizers said the turnout was good considering it was the first blood drive done with The Blood Connection. St. Luke’s recently announced a new contract with The Blood Connection, an Upstate, S.C. provider for blood products.

ECO, the Environmental and Conservation Organization’s Green Energy and Sustainability Committee, has announced its sustainability workshops for the first half of 2012.

The workshops are designed to help local residents use environmentally sound methods to live better lives and develop closer connections to their world. ECO organizers said each workshop will be taught by a trained specialist.

The sustainability programs will begin on Thursday, Jan. 26 with a forum featuring owners of green homes who took part in ECO’s Green Home Tour over the last few years. They will talk about their successes and challenges, expectations and changes as they set out to build environmentally friendly homes. This forum will be held in the conference room at the ECO Office, 121 Third Avenue West, Hendersonville, N.C. Upcoming workshops include: • Feb. 21, 6:30 p.m.: Raising Rabbits for the Home or Business. Rock Harty of Harty Farms in Madison County will teach a workshop on raising rabbits, from breeding stock to housing, feeding, breeding, processing, packaging and sales.

• March 6 - 6:30 p.m.: Creating a Backyard or Neighbor-

hood Orchard. Chuck Marsh, a permaculture landscape expert, will discuss how to turn your backyard or a neighborhood spot into a thriving fruit and nut tree orchard. Issues covered will include siting of the trees, cultural strategies, companion plants and animals, optimizing nutrition and much more. Advance registrants will also be able to order fruit trees that will be delivered at the time of the workshop.

• April 21- 10 a.m.: Wild Plant Walk. Local naturalist Michele Skeele will lead a walk in the woods identifying local plants that are suitable for eating.

• May: Composting Workshop (date/time TBA). Rather than dumping food waste, put it to work in your garden to grow your own food creating a closed loop.

Join a panel of experts to learn the latest ways to create garden independence without reliance on harmful and damaging chemicals in your yard.

Public hearing on Lee Nuclear Plant Some local residents are planning to attend a public hearing scheduled in Gaffney, S.C. on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. about the proposed Lee Nuclear Plant on the Broad River.

At that public hearing, the public is invited to submit oral and written comments to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) about the proposed plant.

According to Ellen Thomas of Tryon, Lee Nuclear Plant’s two reactors would use 47 million gallons of water per day with 75 percent loss through evaporation.

The NRC calls the Broad River “small” and climate changes suggest possible droughts, she said.

Shutdowns could happen because

of lack of water for cooling, she said.

The hearing will be held at Restoration Church International, 1905 North Limestone Street, Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

The board will form a holding company, HomeTrust Bancshares Inc., to offer for sale shares of common stock to depositors and certain borrowers of HomeTrust Bank and its partner banks and others in a subscription and community offering.

Bezzek named medical director at Rutherford Medical Center Dr. Mark S. Bezzek has been named medical director of the emergency department at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.

Bezzek, a native of Jersey City, N.J., comes to Rutherford Regional from Memorial Hospital of Salem County in Salem, N.J., where he served as chairman of the emergency department. He previously served as a staff physician for South Jersey Physicians Group in Vineland, N.J. and Mercy Suburban Hospital in Norristown, Pa. Bezzek’s philosophy for the emergency department is to see patients right away and get them out quickly. He has implemented processes at other medical centers to decrease the amount of time a patient waits to see a doctor from eight hours to less than 30 minutes.

A class in “Nia and The Joy of Movement” will be offered in Tryon on Saturday, Jan. 21, 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. at Healthy Balance Center for Empowered Living.

Nia, a sensory-based movement practice, draws from the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. According to instructor Lia Barth, Nia invites you to move in your body’s way to attain health and well-being.

Blue Ridge Christian Academy students reenact Egyptian burial

Ms. Hatfield’s third grade class at Blue Ridge Christian Academy recently reenacted an Egyptian burial as part of their study on Ancient Egypt. The academy is scheduling tours for families interested in enrolling for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications are being accepted for grades K4 - 12th grade.
