CREATIVE WELLSPRING Las Vegas’ story is one of glitz and gaming, excess and escapism — a colorful tale, but delve into the narrative developing just off the Strip, in the burgeoning 18b Arts District or the Downtown3rd District. Explore eclectic galleries, shop small boutiques, maybe imbibe a craft cocktail while listening to an experimental music showcase: it’s all happening in the area west of the Strip anchored by Charleston Boulevard. This is the18b Arts District, so named because the original arts district area consisted of 18 blocks. If you’re lucky enough to be there on the first Friday on the month, you’ll want to check out the First Friday festival, where thousands flock for street performances, live music, local artists’ exhibits and shows, food trucks and more. Inspiration is in the air north of Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas — this is the Downtown 3rd District, the area where Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh relocated his company in a move to revitalize the community, spurring a spate of new business openings. Having an art attack? Head to Emergency Arts on Sixth and Fremont streets, a collective for writers, artists, musicians — and a great place to grab a cup of coffee. You may even want to stay here in Downtown 3rd, perhaps at the Downtown Grand Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, which opened in November 2013.
CELEBRITY CHEFS The bright lights and gourmet menus will bring you back to the Las Vegas Strip, boasting more than 40 restaurants with celebrity chefs at the helm. Kick it up a notch at Emeril Lagasse’s Table 10 inside the Palazzo or throw down a tamale at Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace. Unfold that starched napkin at Gordon Ramsay Steak inside Paris Las Vegas or loosen up at Todd English P.U.B. at Crystals in City Center. Calories do not count here — at least, they shouldn’t! — the point is to sample, sip and savor what’s on offer in this foodie mecca. 28
