A Legacy Like No Other As the world’s longest-running travel company, Cox & Kings has been designing, organizing and leading exceptional journeys since we operated our first expedition to India in 1758. Since then, we’ve been at the forefront of exploration, organizing the first attempted expedition to Mount Everest in 1922 and bringing Mahatma Gandhi to Europe in 1933. Over the past quarter millennium, we’ve broken down barriers, unlocked doors, seen new vistas and laid the world at the feet of those who’ve traveled with us. In other words, we’ve been around the world a few times… and we’re passionate about delivering vibrant and indelible travel experiences.

And these days, traveling with Cox & Kings is a bit more comfortable than in those expeditionary days of old, but no less exciting. On each journey, you’ll reap the benefits of over two and a half centuries of relationships — local experts, insider experiences and cultural interactions you simply cannot get elsewhere. At Cox & Kings, we believe that travel changes lives, and we’re dedicated to creating authentic travel experiences, full of surprises, wonder and excitement. So whether you want to track the Big 5 in Ngorongoro Crater, delve into the history of the Holy Land in Israel or indulge yourself on some of South Africa’s renowned wine estates, we’ve got the expertise and the relationships to ensure that your journey is completely unforgettable.

The Okavango Delta in northern Botswana is home to a plethora of wildlife, including African bush elephants, hippos, Nile crocodiles, giraffes, lions and leopards. It’s also one terminus of the second longest zebra migration in the world. Once a year, up to 25,000 zebras depart the Delta to move southeast across the plains. Along the way, they are hunted by their natural predators—lions, cheetahs, leopards, and wild dogs— who watch the herd carefully to pick off those that have succumbed to the rigors of the trek. For the zebras that make it, however, the reward is nothing short of a feast fit for a king. Explore Africa & Arabia

Tr avel in Africa & Indian Ocean your arrival at your destination, these delays can cause problems with onward connections and/ or hotel and vacation arrangements, which may need to be rescheduled. Although the airline will sometimes make alternative arrangements to get you to your next destination at no extra cost, additional costs may be involved after your arrival in the form of additional accommodation costs, transfers and onward tickets. Unfortunately, since most services are paid for in advance, any services missed due to delays are non-refundable. Please also bear in mind that many international flight tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable. Therefore, it is essential that you are insured against such eventualities. Airport Departure Taxes: Many cities in Africa levy a tax for passengers departing on international flights, and where this is not included in the ticket price it will need to be paid in local currency or the equivalent in U.S. dollars. Other cities within a country may also levy a small charge for departures on domestic flights. Occasionally, taxes may be included in your ticket; we will advise you accordingly. Since there is no standard charge between countries, and taxes are subject to change, it is not possible to list the taxes in this brochure. We list applicable departure taxes in our pre-tour general information, which you should receive when you confirm your booking. We attempt to keep these as current as possible. Please ensure you keep enough local currency or U.S. dollars to cover these taxes. At Cox & Kings, we believe that a good vacation is not luck but judgment, and we have compiled the following advice to outline the nature of travel in Africa, and to help you prepare for your journey. Even with the most meticulous planning, however, there can always be unforeseen occurrences and, while our local representatives are on hand to rectify such occurrences, we do request that you have a patient and broadminded approach to traveling in Africa. Flights Internal Flights: Scheduled flights within SubSaharan Africa are typically limited to 33-44 lbs. of luggage per person, depending on the

66

airline or charter company operating the flight. Although you may have a luggage weight limit of 44-88 lbs. on your international flight as well as hand luggage, you will need to limit your baggage as required according to the country and airlines or store baggage at your arrival airport. Some flights also require that luggage be packed in soft-sided bags, which Cox & Kings will provide prior to your travel. Between the camps and lodges, we can book either shared air transfers or private charters. We will automatically book shared air transfers wherever available unless otherwise requested. Please note that shared air transfers may make stops to pick up and drop off passengers at other camps, lodges and

airstrips en route. Private charter flights only stop for refueling or for customs and immigration formalities as needed. The flight times for air transfers between camps and lodges are arranged 24-48 hours prior to the flight. Departure times are therefore advised locally. ROAD TRAVEL Generally, road conditions in Southern Africa are reasonably good; however, they vary greatly between the modern cities and the remote areas, where the dusty, gravel roads necessitate 4-wheel-drive travel. When traveling off the beaten track, roads are frequently narrow, bumpy and pot-holed, and have stretches which are not sealed, or which are under reconstruction. In Ethiopia, Madagascar, Namibia and Uganda particularly, conditions are very dusty and the off-road journeys tend to be quite strenuous. Road conditions change throughout the year, and heavy tropical rains and extreme weather patterns can affect journey times enormously.

If we are custom designing an itinerary for you, it is always a good idea to discuss your particular requirements with your travel consultant, who will endeavor to include as much or as little road travel as you desire. The type of vehicle varies according to the country visited and the number of people within your group. In destinations where conditions require it, off-road driving will be in 4-wheel-drive Land Cruisers or Land Rovers. TRAIN TRAVEL Traveling by train in Southern Africa can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. New luxury train routes are constantly being developed and there are now a variety of excellent routes available. Cox & Kings does not advise travelers to use the local trains, which cannot be confirmed as safe; however, the internationally acclaimed Rovos Rail and Blue Train offer a relaxed and luxurious alternative to road travel. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation standards vary dramatically throughout Africa; however, hotels used on Cox & Kings journeys can normally be expected to be very comfortable. In more remote destinations, such as parts of Ethiopia and Madagascar, accommodation will be more basic. Cox & Kings uses the best available properties in remote destinations and, although these will be clean and offer en suite rooms, in general they cannot be compared to modern, Western hotels. In some locations, many of the hotels we use are small, privately owned properties retaining much of their original ambience. In most destinations, service and food will be of a high quality, but in some less-developed regions hotel service can be slow and we ask you to show patience in this regard. Please note, typically all rooms reserved on your tour are standard; however, if you wish to upgrade your room, please speak to your tour consultant, who will be able to advise you about the options and the applicable supplements. Early Starts: When on safari, you will find it is necessary to leave your lodge very early in the morning (around dawn) in order to maximize the

opportunities for game viewing, as the wildlife is more active during the cooler morning hours and in the evening. Check-in & Check-out Times: In some situations, when a flight arrives very early in the morning, it may be that you will be taken for breakfast or sightseeing before being allocated your rooms since check-in time is normally between 12 noon and 2 p.m. In situations where flights depart late in the evening, hotels generally hold your luggage after check-out until time to depart for the airport as check-out time is normally 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Cox & Kings’ local representatives will request that you are able to access your room as early as possible or keep it as late as possible, but early check-ins and late check-outs are not guaranteed without additional cost. Game Parks & Remote Areas: Within Africa, we generally use the best accommodation available. However, even luxurious properties are a long way from other civilization and can often only be reached down narrow and makeshift roads. Although accommodation will often be in tents, these can be more luxurious than some lodges and include private facilities. Even when you travel off the beaten track with Cox & Kings, you can be sure that your accommodation in game lodges, smaller hotels and tented camps is on par with the best available in that category. Sometimes the best hotel may be the only hotel, which may be very modest. In these cases we feel that such accommodation is outweighed by the experience of these more remote areas. MEALS Meals included in the tour program are indicated in the itineraries at the end of each day with the following codes: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L) and Dinner (D). Maps Type of travel is indicated in the maps at the beginning of each itinerary with the following symbols: Surface Travel ( ), Air Travel ( ), Train Travel ( ) and Cruise Travel ( ).

May through August is the winter season, marked by cloudless days and mild temperatures. The weather in August and September is comparable to spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Occasional rain showers may be experienced toward the end of October as the heat builds, but game viewing is excellent due to the lack of thick vegetation and the water holes drying up. November and early December through March are considered summer months. These months border the rainy season, when you may encounter brief but heavy rain and thunderstorms. April is a delightful month to visit Botswana and is marked by moderate temperatures. Maun Ave. Max. Temp (°F) Ave. Min. Temp (°F)

Tanzania A visit to Tanzania is worthwhile at any time of year. There are two distinct rainy seasons: the “Long Rains” from March-May, and the “Short Rains” in November and December. The easiest time to see large numbers of game throughout Tanzania is during the dry season, between June and October, which is especially good in southern Tanzania. Heavy rains can occur in Zanzibar from March-May. Dar es Salaam Ave. Max. Temp (°F) Ave. Min. Temp (°F)

Madagascar

The most popular time to visit Zambia is during the short dry period, between May and September, when the game congregates near the waterholes. The ‘Green Season’ runs from December to April, during which time the majority of the camps and lodges close for the season. During this time, the rivers in the Luangwa Valley swell, dry plains become lakes, and vegetation grows lush and green. Animals give birth and food is plentiful. Many of the resident birds form spectacular breeding colonies and many migrant birds arrive from the north.

Madagascar has a tropical climate, with large variations in rainfall across the island dictated by the central mountain and trade winds. The most popular time to visit is during the dry months between April and October. There is a rainy season from December to March, including the cyclone season in February and March.

Travel in Arabia & North Africa At Cox & Kings we believe that a good holiday is not luck but judgment. We have therefore compiled the following advice to outline the nature of travel in the Middle East & North Africa and to help you prepare for your holiday. Even with the most meticulous planning, however, there can always be unforeseen occurrences and, while our ground staff is always on hand to rectify such occurrences, we do request that you have a patient and broadminded approach to traveling in Arabia & North Africa.

please discuss this with your consultant. Types of vehicles vary according to the country visited and the numbers on a tour, but generally the following can be used as a guideline for the size of transportation provided: 2-3 passengers, sedan car; 4-6 passengers, minivan; 6-19 passengers, small bus; 20-28 passengers, medium bus. In destinations where conditions require it, off-road driving will be in 4-wheel-drive Land Cruiser / Land Rover vehicles. Early Starts

Flights Internal Flights / Delays / Insurance: Internal flights in this brochure use jet airliners. Flight delays have become more commonplace, and additional costs may well be involved. This may be in the form of added accommodation costs, transfers and/or onward tickets. Cox & Kings will endeavor to ensure that arrangements go as smoothly as possible. As services are paid for in advance, any services missed due to delays and/ or schedule changes are non-refundable. Many international flight tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable. The insurance policy offered by Cox & Kings is designed to mitigate the costs and effects of such delays in certain circumstances and we strongly advise that you are insured against such eventualities. Airport Departure Taxes: The cost of our tours does not always include airport/overland departure taxes; it is necessary for you to pay these locally, in local currency. Departure taxes vary in each country and the rates will be advised before your departure from the U.S.A. These taxes are always subject to change and if they do so when you are traveling, your tour leader or our ground handler will advise you. Road Travel Generally, the road conditions in the Middle East & North Africa are fairly good. However, please be aware that some tours involve offroad driving, which can be uncomfortable, dusty and quite strenuous. The distance covered in some of our tours is also considerable. If you have any problems with protracted road travel,

Flights to the Middle East arrive/depart early in the morning and early check-in/check-out times may be required. Most domestic flights are scheduled early in the morning and can be prone to schedule changes. This is beyond our control. To avoid the heat during the warmer months, early morning starts are often made for sightseeing. Accommodation Accommodation standards vary dramatically throughout the Middle East and hotels should not generally be compared to Western European standards. For our tours in the Middle East, we have chosen hotels primarily for their location and the facilities available. The hotels listed in the tour itineraries may occasionally be unavailable for the required dates. In this event, we will advise you of the alternative hotels, which will, where possible, be of the same or a higher standard than those featured in the itineraries. We may upgrade hotels featured in the brochure if better options in the same category become available. Christmas and New Year dinners are compulsory at some hotels - these will be charged as a supplement. Please note, all rooms reserved on your tour are standard unless specified; however, if you wish to upgrade your room (e.g. to a deluxe, pyramid view or suite etc.), please speak to your tour consultant, who will be able to advise you about the options and the applicable supplements. Check-in & Check-out Times: For all tours, hotel check-in / out time is normally 12 noon, but this does vary between hotels. Early check-ins and late check-outs cannot be pre-booked without

Arabia & North Africa Fact File

additional cost, but can sometimes be negotiated on site.

Many of the sites in the Middle East are quite spread out and our tours consequently necessitate a reasonable amount of walking. While the walking is mostly easy going, a fullday sightseeing can be tiring and sometimes strenuous. At monuments there are many steep sections and uneven surfaces. A reasonable amount of fitness is required. Nile Cruises At certain times of year, particularly during winter, sightseeing during the Nile cruise is subject to change, based on navigational conditions and the captain, at time of sail. Due to the large numbers of cruise boats operating on the Nile, delays can occur, sometimes necessitating sailing at night. Embarkation and disembarkation of cruise boats usually involves descending and ascending a flight of steps. Cruise itineraries are based on full board, but all alcoholic beverages will be charged as extras. Star Goddess suites and Alexander the Great Yacht cabins are based on availability at time of booking. Children under 12 years are not allowed on the Alexander the Great Yacht. Meals Meals included in the tour program are indicated in the itineraries at the end of each day with codes: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L) and Dinner (D).

Ramadan is a very important yearly festival celebrated during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Followers of the Islamic faith fast for the entire month and there is no eating, drinking, or smoking from sunrise until sunset. Working hours are often reduced to allow for prayer and reflection. The fast is broken each night with the meal referred to as “Iftar”, taken with friends and family. Traditional music and entertainment is enjoyed throughout the night, and many stay awake until dawn. The end of Ramadan and the end of fasting is marked with a festival called Eid-al-Fitr and is celebrated with large feasts. Because the Islamic calendar differs from the Western calendar, Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr are fluctuating dates. FESTIVAL

The best time to visit the United Arab Emirates is between October and November and also February to March, when temperatures are in the midtwenties and the humidity is not so oppressive. Rainfall at this time is also sparse. July and August are the height of summer when temperatures and humidity are at their peak and so this time is best avoided for travel.
