he carrier’s net profit for the first nine months of the year stood at AED498 million (USD135 million), up 46 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2013, while its turnover of AED2.8 billion (USD762 million) showed an increase of 17 percent year-on-year. The low-cost airline served over 5.1 million passengers during the period under review and the average seat load factor for the same period stood at an impressive 82 percent.

GTA, a travel distributor, has launched its enhanced distribution agreement with 10 properties in Australia, Fiji, Mauritius and Thailand from Outrigger Enterprises Group.

Emirates App Now on iPhone Building on the successful launch of the Emirates app for iPad earlier this year, the airline has now increased its mobile presence with the launch of the iPhone version.

s part of its Our Marvelous Oceans partnership with Marine Conservation Institute, Holland America Line has created a new programme that highlights and educates guests and crew about marine protected areas around the world through onboard presentations by shipboard personnel. The initiative, developed with the team at Marine Conservation Institute, will cover what a marine protected area is and how to visit one without causing harm to the habitat and wildlife. “The goal of this partnership is to promote marine protected areas around the world, especially in those regions where our ships sail,” said Richard Meadows, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programmes, Holland America Line.

he Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) has launched an intensive 10-day long inspection campaign at 107 hotel facilities in the emirate, to ensure the highest levels of services are provided to guests, especially in enforcing health, hygiene and environment guidelines with a 20-day deadline to carry out maintenance, according to H.E. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, director general, SCTDA. Sharjah received more than a million hotel guests during the first half of this year, said Al Midfa, emphasising the role played by hotel establishments and the quality of hospitality and services they offer in attracting visitors and contributing to the tourism sector in the emirate.

With the aim of driving growth in visitor numbers from countries within Asia Pacific, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM) announced the establishment of a new hub office in Sydney.

T

he new office will oversee the work of DCTCM’s existent offices in the Far East, Japan, Australia and New Zealand to maximise opportunities to increase visitor numbers from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Omran and Qatari Diar to Launch New Project

A

comprehensive development agreement was signed between the government of Oman and Qatari Diar Ras Al-Hadd Development Company, a newly-established entity that is jointly owned by Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran), representing the Sultanate, and Qatari Diar. The deal gave the green light for the commencement of the eco-themed Ras Al-Hadd tourism project. Covering a land area of 1,848ha, the development will see the establishment of a 200-unit eco-resort, two five-star properties, hotel and residential villas, souqs, a wildlife preservation and observation park, a specialised marine life park, as well as a dedicated heritage village. The first phase of the project is set for completion by the end of 2018.

Four- and Five-Star Hotel Revenue Up in Oman According to a report issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the number of guests staying at four- and five-star hotels in Oman witnessed a significant increase of 23.4 percent by the end of September, reaching 529,466 guests in year-to-date figures.

dditionally, total revenue for luxury and upper-class hotels also recorded a healthy year-on-year growth of 9.8 percent during the same period. Moreover, the occupancy rate was also boosted, rising to 57.5 percent compared with a 54.9 percent recorded in September 2013. Europe topped the list of four- and five-star hotel guests with 166,284 visitors; following were Omanis at 156,672 and the GCC segment which reached 79,305.

Egypt Back in the Top Five

E

gypt Tourism Authority celebrated the success of its tourism campaign, Masr Wahashtouna, which resulted in a 40 percent rise in tourist numbers from the Middle East. Moreover, it brought Egypt back up to the top five touristic destinations in the Middle East. Hisham Zaazou, tourism minister, Egypt, commented that the campaign has engaged Arab tourists to increase to unprecedented numbers and will now also target foreigners, who make up around 70 percent of the tourists that travel to Egypt. ”We hope that tourist numbers would rise by up to 10 percent this year, and recover to pre-uprising levels of 14.7 million visitors in 2015,” he added.

Muscat Boasts Omagine Tourist Complex

T

he US-Omani company Omagine has penned a deal with Oman’s Ministry of Tourism to develop, design, operate and own a tourist entertainment and real estate project in the governorate of Muscat. Omagine Project is planned to include residential units, apartments, villas, five- and four-star hotels, an open theatre, a small marina and dining outlets. Ahmed bin Nasser al Mahrzi, tourism minister, Oman, said that the development is one of the major tourism projects that will be implemented in the governorate of Muscat.

Iraq Prepares USD50 Billion Aviation Infrastructure Projects

usiness opportunities in Iraq’s USD50 billion aviation infrastructure projects will be highlighted during Iraq Airports Show, hosted by Sulaymaniyah International Airport from December 3 – 4. The fourth annual Iraq Airports Conference and Exhibition will focus on the progress of Iraq’s ongoing airport projects, as well as best practices in air traffic control and management, safety and security, operations and ground handling. “Air transport infrastructure in the country has crumbled after years of underfunding, but the Iraqi government has a clear vision to rebuild the aviation sector by injecting cash into redevelopment efforts and regaining international investor confidence,” said Ram Muthaiah, general manager, Babylon International, organiser of the show.

Sheraton Doha Invites Guests for a Sneak Peek

atara Hospitality and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide reintroduced Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel following a nine-month renovation. Scheduled to officially relaunch in December, the property opened its doors on November 16, offering guests a sneak peek into the restoration of Doha’s social icon. The special sneak peek gave local residents and guests access to the lobby and public areas, with the hotel team offering tours to all the renovated areas of the hotel, including guest rooms, the convention centre, the recreation centre and food and beverage outlets. While the property will not be operational until its official reopening, the all-day dining outlet, Al Hubara, and lobby café, Atrium Lounge, will be serving guests during the sneak peek period.

Action Hotels and Accor Prepare Third Hotel in Kuwait

A

ction Hotels has recently signed a hotel management agreement designating Accor as the long-term management of the developer’s third property in Kuwait. The deal for the 160-room, four-star Novotel property was signed by H.E. Sheikh Mubarak Abdulla Mubarak Al Sabah, chairman, Action Hotels, and Christophe Landais, chief operating officer, Accor HotelServices Middle East. According to Alain Debare, CEO, Action Hotels, the construction of the freehold unit is currently expected to cost approximately USD29 million, an average of USD181,000 per room. “Construction is scheduled to commence by mid-2015 and we expect Novotel Sharq to open its doors to Kuwait in 2017, joining the 175-room ibis Salmiya which opened in 2008, and the neighbouring 160-room ibis Sharq, now four years in operation.”

Dubai to Welcome a Sharia-compliant Hotel

Hotels unveiled plans for an AED500 million (USD136.2 million) investment at Palm Jumeirah, with a new property set to open in late 2016. The 259-room hotel will be the first sharia-compliant resort and spa in the destination. Planned facilities are to include extensive wellness options such as a spa for men and women, a gym and swimming pool, as well as two food and beverage outlets, a sauna, steam bath, supervised indoor and outdoor kids’ play and entertainment areas. Sumair Tariq, managing director, R Hotels, stated, “We take pride in our sharia-compliant properties in the UAE and we aim to make a mark in the hospitality industry by capitalising on strategic locations, particularly in Dubai.”

ovember saw Novotel World Trade Centre unveil a collection of 132 revamped rooms, with another 100 being expected before the end of the month. By early 2015, a total of 412 rooms will be refreshed, along with eight meeting rooms. New features include backlit headboards above spacious beds, modern bathrooms, eco-friendly amenities, LED TVs, high-speed Wi-Fi, dedicated work areas, laptop-sized safety boxes and other high-tech features. The property offers guests a selection of four food and beverage outlets, in addition to a gym, sauna, steam room and a temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool.

ollowing a successful year of operations, Gulf Air has announced the launch of an additional service to Trivandrum International Airport from Bahrain, scheduled to commence on December 5. Ahmed Janahi, acting chief commercial officer, Gulf Air, commented, “We are delighted to announce our increased frequency that follows consistently strong passenger demand, with an average of 85 percent seat factor this year to date. Kerala’s capital city will be serviced with daily Gulf Air flights in order to meet travellers’ needs, particularly those of the region’s 5.6 million Indian community, further reinforcing the strong historic ties between Bahrain and Kerala […].”

A

litalia and Etihad Airways confirmed that they have received merger clearance from the European Commission, which gave the green light to the proposed strategic partnership announced in August. Following the completion of its review, the European Commission confirmed that the partnership complies with the European regulations on competition. In line with previous cases, the airlines undertook commitments aimed at facilitating the entry of new airlines on the Rome – Belgrade route, and aim to completing the transaction before the end of the year. Gabriele del Torchio, CEO, Alitalia, said, “This investment will provide financial stability and a foundation for impressive longterm growth for the company and for the travel and tourism industry in Italy, in which Alitalia is a fundamental player.”

atar Airways is to expand its flights to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport from March 29, 2015, as it increases its frequency to a double-daily service. With the launch of the new daily flight, passengers from the Middle East, Asia Pacific, the Americas and Africa can now take advantage of an additional morning connection to Istanbul via Doha. “Qatar Airways’ service to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport has enjoyed exceptional popularity since its launch earlier this year. The start of a double daily service from March 2015 will further strengthen our support for leisure and business travel to Istanbul and we are certain that our passengers will welcome this initiative,” said H.E. tihad Cargo has expanded its fleet of freighter aircraft with the placement of a third Boeing 747 aircraft from Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, as part of a multiyear aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) agreement. The 747-400 freighter complements existing lease agreements previously signed by Etihad Cargo for Boeing 747 freighter aircraft in May 2012 and May 2013. James Hogan, president, Etihad Airways, said, “Etihad Cargo continues to play a vital role in the growth and profit of the airline. We reported USD804 million in cargo revenue during the first three quarters of the year, and we are on track for this business to be turning over USD1 billion by the end of the year.”

n November 16, Emirates resumed flights to Erbil with two weekly flights, set to increase to four times per week as of December 4. “We have been closely monitoring the situation in Iraq and after a thorough review of all operational factors we have decided to resume our services, which will help support business and international investment across numerous sectors in Erbil. The resumed service will be of particular benefit to passengers connecting to the GCC and points to the US and Europe,” said Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, divisional senior vice president, commercial operations, Emirates.

SAUDIA to Introduce Book and Pay System

S

audi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA) will begin implementing the new Book and Pay system for its domestic flights, effective January 1, 2015, in order to make optimum use of its seat capacity and meet actual passenger demand. The new scheme aims to eradicate practices such as booking seats without any need for travel and cancelling them at the last moment, thus preventing actual passengers from using the available seats. It is also set to put an end to the phenomenon of unauthorised agents who offer reservation services through the Internet and social media, holding seats and selling them to passengers for better prices which, however, sometimes reach the price of the original ticket.

RENDEZVOUS TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How important is sports tourism in maintaining a sustainable path in the destination’s tourism growth? Which are the emirate’s main target markets in terms of sports travel? HAMAD BIN MEJREN: Dubai Tourism Vision 2020 is to welcome 20 million visitors a year to Dubai by the year 2020, with three points of focus: events, family and business. In order to achieve these goals and maintain such figures, sustainable growth is incredibly important. Bearing in mind that sports enthusiasts are willing to travel overseas to attend events and support their teams or players, sports tourism and sports events have a big role to play in this strategy. Therefore, it is a key area for us when attracting visitors from around the world. Sports events put Dubai on the map. The emirate has successfully established itself as the events hub of the MENA and South Asia supra-region, and is increasingly being recognised as a leading global events destination. Over the next few months, Dubai will host a huge variety of sports events [...]. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: The Middle East is rapidly becoming a sports hub with a variety of sporting events being held across the region. How has the authority changed perceptions on sports for locals as well as tourists visiting the destination for the various events? HAMAD BIN MEJREN: Creating and sustaining a visitor economy is crucial for economic development. To achieve this, it is imperative that the government and private sectors work together in their approach, something which is already happening in Dubai. Building festivals around these sport events is key in attracting not only more visitors, but an increased length of stay too. The Dubai World Cup is a key example of this. With the first race having taken place in 1981, the event this year was much more than a one-day event with a series of high-profile races taking place throughout January to March. The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is a prime example. Now in its 45th year, it is the largest annual sporting event in Dubai and the longestrunning international sporting event in the Middle East. [2013’s] event attracted over 90,000 people and each year, the event gets bigger with this year’s event featuring a music concert and a whole host of activities to keep visitors of all ages entertained. Events, such as the Al Marmoum Camel Racing Season, also maintain the local and traditional sport of camel racing, while new, one-off events add to the already diverse offering, broadening the emirate’s appeal. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: Sports travel can be boosted through a combination of business and incentive trips to the destination. How is the authority working towards that end? How popular are such trips in contrast to leisure sports initiatives?

arlson Rezidor Hotel Group has launched its new Radisson Red hotel brand with a deal for the 300-key Radisson Red Shenyang Hunnan in Northeast China, which becomes the first Radisson Red signing in the world. he launch of Dusit Thani Brookwater Golf & Spa Resort at First Residence was recently announced by senior executives of Dusit International at the Brookwater Golf & Country Club in Queensland. The resort, which is the first for the hospitality brand on Australian soil, will offer 168 luxury resort apartments with private plunge pools in its first phase, as well as a recreation club, a gymnasium, a bridal centre and wedding chapel, four restaurants, and more. The first phase is due to launch in the last quarter of 2016. Upon full completion, the resort will feature a total of 520 luxury resort apartments, a tennis stadium, a water park, a retail emporium and a convention centre.

he International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global passenger traffic results for September showing demand growth of 5.3 percent over September 2013. September capacity rose 5.1 percent and load factor rose 0.2 percentage points to 80.3 percent. Middle East carriers once again recorded the strongest increase in international air travel, with a rise of 15.8 percent in September compared to the same period in 2013. Capacity rose 14.9 percent and load factor climbed 0.6 percentage points to 78 percent. “It is an interesting time for the global air transport industry, highlighting the complex vulnerabilities of the business,” noted Tony Tyler, CEO, IATA.

SCTDA Renews Tourist Guide Licences The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) conducted another tourist license renewal course for professional tourist guides working in the emirate.

ourist guides that took part in the fourday course represented a mix of nationalities, from countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Egypt, Eritrea and China. They attended several lectures held by prominent experts on the emirate’s identity, history, culture and urban and economic development, and took part in field visits to Sharjah’s key landmarks and attractions. These included Heart of Sharjah, with its souks, museums, art galleries and cultural centres, Sharjah Aquarium and Maritime Museum, The Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Sharjah Desert Park, and more.

he number of international tourists travelling between January and August reached 781 million, marking a five percent increase year-on-year. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) had originally projected a 3.8 percent annual growth rate. “International tourism continues to grow above expectations, despite rising global challenges”, said Taleb Rifai, secretary general, UNWTO. The months of June, July and August, which account for about one third of the total travellers, grew by four percent year-on-year. The strongest growth was registered in the Americas with eight percent, followed by Asia Pacific with five and Europe with four percent. North America and South Asia jumped nine and eight percent respectively.

ubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) has welcomed a Danish diplomatic delegation to its headquarters. The delegates appraised UAE’s leading role on the global maritime map, and also discussed ways to strengthen maritime cooperation between the UAE and Denmark. The joint discussions focussed on the Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre, an innovative hub for the settlement of maritime disputes in the Middle East, in accordance with independent legal frameworks and regulatory controls. Furthermore, the delegation was also informed about Dubai’s Maritime Sector Strategy which is based on an ambitious vision to promote and develop all components of its marine community to create an integrated environment, making Dubai the world’s leading maritime hub.

igures published for this year’s May edition of IMEX in Frankfurt reveal that IMEX Group’s annual Frankfurt show continues to hit its growth targets.
