The first settlers in what was to become Estevan arrived in 1892, along with the expansion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was incorporated as a village in 1899, and later became a town in 1906. On March 1, 1957, Estevan acquired the status of a city, which, in Saskatchewan terms, is any community of 5,000 or more. The name origin is attributed to George Stephen’s Registered Telegraphic Address, Estevan. George Stephen was the first President of the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1881 to 1888. On December 22, 1915, the 152nd (Weyburn-Estevan) Battalion, CEF was authorised and recruited men from the area before departing to Great Britain on October 3, 1916. Estevan was the site of the notorious Estevan Riot in 1931. Although most of the strikers were from nearby Bienfait,

1930 - Train Trestle South of Estevan destroyed by tornado.

the strike is associated with Estevan because it was in this city that the demonstrators were met by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. After the subsequent riot, which lasted 45 minutes, three strikers lay dead. It was later proven that the three miners had been killed by the RCMP. The miners had been organized by the Workers’ Unity League. ****Visit the Souris Valley Museum to find our more of the culture and history offered in Estevan.****

Motor Sports

ESTEVAN motorsports The adrenaline is working when you feel like you are flying, without the plane.

Estevan Drag Racing AssociaƟon What a thrill to spend an afternoon as two vehicles race down the track.

Estevan MotorSpeedway Race day will bring you “sit on the edge of your seat” experience at the Estevan Motor Speedway. Its’ 3/8 mile highbanked oval dirt track and grandstand puts you above the track so you can see what is happening all the time. Each night there are three regular classes that race bi-weekly where the drivers compete for the nightly purse and points for the track, regionally and nationally. The Estevan Motor Speedway has special events throughout the race season including Monster trucks, Box Car Races and many others.

The Estevan Drag Racing Association has been in our community since 2003 and pits a large variety of automobiles; bikes, cars and trucks. The drag racing community is a large one and holds a lot of fans in the Estevan area. Some of the modifications done to these vehicles are something to be in awe of and spectators may have a chance to get up close and personal with the cars and their drivers. The races are held at the Estevan Airport with plans in the works, of making a permanent home near the Shand Power Station in the near future.

Trackside MX Either get your motor running and head down to Trackside MX for some awesome races or come out and watch all the action from the grandstands. Trackside MX has a diverse terrain with 3 valley sections, over and under bridge, step-on and step-offs, big doubles and rythmn section. There is also a kids track to develop skills for those new to the sport. If you are coming to Estevan for the track; camping and RV space is available onsite. Most of the racers belong to the Southeast Corner Racing Circuit that has events throughout the Southeast in our surrounding communities.

The Estevan Chamber of Commerce is a diversified, member-driven network of businesses striving to improve the business climate and community well being.

Estevan Snowmobile Club The Estevan Snowmobile Club maintains around 250 km of trails in the southeast. Main trails run from Estevan to Benson, Lampman, Wilmar and Arcola with warm-up/safety shelters in between. The club has been in operation for more than 15 years and operates on a membership basis. Snowmobilers from out of province are able to ride on their groomed trails as long as they have a snowmobile license.

Roche Percee is 20 km east of Estevan in the valley of the Souris River is home to what the locals call “The Rocks”. It has large sandstone deposits in which some caves have formed. The name of the village comes from the Métis name of the rock formations which mean “pierced rock” in French. Many locals spend time here on picnic’s and letting the kids wander and explore through this Roche Percee Provincial Historic Site.

During the Winter the hills of Roche Percee are transformed into a fun tobogganing site. If you happen to meet any locals while you are visiting Roche Percee make sure you ask them the story about Rugaroos, It might make you want to search a little deeper into “The Rocks.”

Winter

ESTEVAN winter

Tobogganing Feel like a kid again speeding down a snow covered hill and making the long trek back up it. We have a few hills that are known for great tobogganing that many people get use of on beautiful winter days. A well known hill is the “Westview Hill” located on the 1700 block of 1st Street. There is a “ramp” half way down the hill that adds even more distance and speed. The Valley in Pleasantdale area is another great hill. Shorter than Westview but steeper and an easier climb. There are different spots that you can get to the Valley. The north part of Cundall Drive is a good starting place.

Outdoor Ice Rinks The outdoor skating season is weather dependant but usually runs from mid December to early March.

Snowshoeing / Cross Country Skiing on Souris River

Grab your skating gear and head to the outdoor rink. Each outdoor rink is maintained by different community organizations, local volunteers and the City.

Snowshoeing and Cross Country Skiing are fast growing sports that are growing in our area. The Souris River is a great place to try out the sport.

All Rinks are boarded and have hockey nets and shovels to clear snow. They also have warm up shacks that have benches and washrooms.

The Souris River usually freezes over mid-December until early March, but check conditions before you go out on the ice.

Hillcrest Park - McDonald Road Rusty Duce - 1300 Nicholson Road Kinsmen Park - 800 Henry Street

Wander the frozen river bed at your own pace. Pick out wildlife tracks in the snow or admire nature under a beautiful white blanket of snow.

bigger in real life Energy Tours Few places will provide you with such in-depth, guided tours of the means by which coal fired plants help generate electricity for our province. Landmarks within the community, Boundary Dam and Shand Power Stations are an integral part of the community. The mammoth size and operations of these marvels can be explored and learned through guided tours. The tours are FREE and provide a great insight into the industry of coal mining. Tours run from June to August from Tuesday through Saturday. Participants have the option of selecting between two tours, depending on their preference on tour specifics and time. The morning tour leaves at 9am from the Visitor Information Centre, and tours Rafferty Dam and the Boundary Dam Mine site.
