ON APRIL 3, 2013, DESIGNER COREY LYNN CALTER RE-LAUNCHED HER NAMESAKE LINE IN HER FALL 2013 PRESENTATION ENTITLED “SMOKE & FLOWERS.” THE EVENT TOOK PLACE AT THE JANE HOTEL IN NYC AND WAS HOSTED BY ACTRESS AND FASHION MUSE, NORA ZEHETNER. TOP NYC EDITORS, STYLISTS AND BLOGGERS GATHERED TO TOAST THE RE-BRANDED LINE, NOW KNOWN AS COREY, AND CONGRATULATE THE DESIGNER ON HER 12 YEARS OF SUCCESS THUS FAR. COREY TURNED TO TONI&GUY TO PROVIDE EXPERT STYLING TO COMPLIMENT HER COLLECTION RELEASE. TONI&GUY EDITORIAL DIRECTOR, WHITNEY BLISCHKE, COLLABORATED WITH THE DESIGNER ON THE SOFT WAVED STYLES AND LED THE TEAM TO EXECUTE THE LOOKS FLAWLESSLY. WE CAUGHT UP WITH WHITNEY TO GET THE INSIDE SCOOP ON THE PRESENTATION AND ALL THE HAIR DETAILS.

NEW YORK FASHION WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE HAIR? The inspiration for the collection this year was definitely focused on a fashion savvy professional girl who can go from day to night and have the transition be seamless and easy. She is feminine, but edgy and her look is never forced. The hair likewise embodied the girl and her lifestyle. Our concept for the hair was that it could possibly have been in a bun all day and then she pulled it out, and ran her fingers through it, resulting in undone waves for the evening.

TONI&GUY EDITORIAL DIRECTOR, WHITNEY BLISCHKE AND DESIGNER, COREY LYNN CALTER

HOW DID YOU EXECUTE THE LOOKS? Executing the hair was not quite as effortless as the description of the inspiration. First we sub-sectioned the hair and created a rope braid. Then we prepped the hair with dry shampoo and salt spray. Next we locked in the braid pattern with heat from the blow dryer to create a really loose soft wave. We used a variety of curling iron sizes to create more defined waves on the top of the hair. The real key to the look was in the prep utilizing the salt spray and dry shampoo to add hold and texture. We used very little product to finish the looks, just light hair spray and shine spray where needed. HOW DOES A PRESENTATION DIFFER FROM A RUNWAY SHOW? A presentation or installment differs from a runway show in that the models tend to linger a bit longer, allowing the editors and buyers to really take in the collection. It tends to be a more selective invite list geared toward those who will purchase the product and promote the brand including editors, stylists and celebrities. WAS IT EXCITING BEING A PART OF COREY’S BRAND RE-LAUNCH? Working with Corey and her team has always been a pleasure. This is the third time we have worked together. This actual show was a rescheduled event due to Superstorm Sandy. Fashion is an ever-changing business and every moment counts! In those months that passed between dates not only did we change the hair, but the fashion changed as well. Nevertheless, it all came together beautifully, and I look forward to working with Corey again.

ASHLEY ACKLIN

What inspired you most when you were doing the makeover? I drew inspiration from Miley Cyrus and her edgy undercut for my photo entry. I focused less on copying Miley’s specific haircut and more on creating an equally bold short style variation to fit my model’s preferences. Disconnection, texture, and movement were the keys to my cut.

STEP 1 Apply your foundation starting from the nose, working your way outward. This technique will help you avoid foundation lines around the face. STEP 2: Create a highlight on top of your cheekbones using TIGI High Density Shadow in Vanilla.

ACADEMY SUMMIT

This April at the annual TONI&GUY Academy Summit, TONI&GUY celebrated its 50 Year Anniversary. Academies from all over the nation gathered to learn and share the latest in the education industry. Highlights included the launch of the TONI&GUY 2.0 App for iPhone and iPad created for TONI&GUY Academy students and a model presentation by Zak Mascolo and the TONI&GUY Artistic Team. The model presentation celebrated the anniversary through a collection of iconic looks from TONI&GUY’s history including Anthony Mascolo’s legendary veil recreated by Darian Bishop (TONI&GUY Academy Director, Atlanta) and Rachel Brumbaugh (TONI&GUY Academy Director, Costa Mesa). The audience was captivated by the looks throughout history and how TONI&GUY has, and continues, to form global trends in hairdressing.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

2013 marks the 50 Year Anniversary of TONI&GUY and as a founding brother it puts new meaning to the phrase: time flies! Founded in 1963 at a single salon in London, our journey has produced a global brand synonymous with quality that includes salons, academies, advanced education, and at one time a leading hair products line. Complete with its own highs and lows, the company’s story is my personal story. My father was a hairdresser and his move from Italy to England provided my brothers and me with the opportunity to create our own business. Our history is rich with taking chances, working hard and depending on one another. It is a family business that has extended to include members beyond the Mascolo family who I am united with through ideas and experiences. TONI&GUY is a collective victory and a vision that has been carried out by many. I am grateful and humbled by these professionals. For those who know me personally, you know how important it is for me to document milestones and events. By doing so, the event becomes timeless and is easily accessible for reflection. As I look back on the last 50 years and the journey of a business, I can honestly say that life’s sweetest victories come from hard work and are shared with others. Celebrate your journey; learn from your path; keep going and remember your victories when faced with challenges. Here’s to another 50 years of TONI&GUY and all the individuals who will be a part of its continued legacy.
