My favorite Christmas tradition is one we’ve incorporated as a family since marrying my husband and having kids. My husband is Polish and as such comes with a whole slew of national traditions. The best thing is that we celebrate on Christmas Eve by cooking all day, handing out gifts to the neighbors, and preparing for a fancy dinner. At the sight of the first star, which our two kids compete to find in the sky, we start dinner. We eat Polish barszcz with uszka we’ve made ourselves as a family. It’s a great way to hang out and connect as a family without any media. I love it. 22

My favorite gift ever is a ring I received from my husband when I was pregnant six years ago. It’s a massive oval of turquoise in a gold setting by Alexis Bittar. He told me he picked it because it looked like an egg. I became superstitious about this ring, that it represented our baby, so when I hit it against a wall and it cracked a few months later I was very upset. He told me not to worry, it just meant our daughter was ready to hatch. A few days later she was born, and she was perfect. Now whenever I travel or am away from my daughter I wear the ring, it’s a superstition and it also makes me feel close to my family when I am far away. 24

As cliche as it may sound...my favorite holiday tradition has always been decorating the Christmas tree. When I was a kid, I had mentally cataloged each ornament, knowing which were my favorites, which should be placed towards the bottom or top of the tree. We have a lot of ornaments from my parents’ childhood mixed in with ornaments my brothers and I made over the years...so the result is this funny, adorable mix of 1950’s vintage meets 1990’s kids art. 48

As a child I grew up celebrating a lot of my mother’s German traditions and I feel it important to pass them down to my children. One of our favorites is St. Nicholas Day. On the night of the 5th of December children set out one of their shoes in front of their bedroom door. The hope is that St. Nicholas will come that night and reward you. If you’ve been a good child you will get treats and small toys, if you’ve been naughty you get a switch or lump of coal. The morning of the 6th you open your bedroom door in anticipation to see what awaits you in your shoe. My son Henrik is finally at the age where he understands the traditions we do and gets excited for them. Last year it was so fun to see the look of excitement on his face when he opened his door and found that St. Nicholas had brought him some fun toys and chocolate. Hooray for being a good boy! 76

Growing up, my family had a tradition of going down to the local firehouse and picking out a live Christmas tree each year.
