DIY joy votive holders by LAURA PARKE, A GIRL WHO MAKES NAME BLOG question answer question answer Materials: glass votive holders, gold fine Step 1: Create artwork on the computer glitter, double sided adhesive paper and print it out to size
Step 2: Cut out each letter. This doesn’t have to be perfect
Step 3: Tape the letter onto the adhesive and using an xacto knife, cut it out carefully
Step 4: Peel the back liner off the letter and firmly stick it to the glass votive holder in the desired spot
Step 5: Next, expose the adhesive by peeling off the front liner
Step 7: Tap off the excess glitter. Using a small paintbrush, dust off the rest of the glitter to reveal a perfect letter shape

Step 6: Sprinkle the exposed adhesive with glitter, making sure to get full coverage of the letter

We come from a very big family with younger siblings still in the mix so Santa is very much still in the works in our house. The little kids wake us up super early and then we all have to sit on the stairs (pictures are always involved) until we can go downstairs together to see what was left for us — something we’ve been doing for as long as we can remember. We absolutely love the welcomed chaos of Christmas morning with everyone. Favorite holiday movie: A definite favorite holiday movie would probably be Miracle on 34th Street. It never seems to get old no matter how many years in a row we’ve watched it.

Best gift you’ve ever received: I know it’s cheesy but the best gift ever was the engagement ring my now-husband proposed to me with. He spent months agonizing over the style (which is so very him), and in the end, he hand-drew the design, gave it a vintage feel, made it extra sparkly and had it set in yellow gold. Favorite holiday memory: Years ago, when my sister’s kids were small, we rented a cabin in big bear for Christmas. At the last minute on Christmas Eve, just before Big Bear’s only grocery store closed, we ended up buying a half-price tree on a whim. Not having any ornaments, we also bought packs of construction paper, glue and scissors, and in front of a roaring fire, we sat around and made paper chains and cut-out snowflakes for decorations while Christmas carols played on the radio. Then after our tree was decked out, at midnight we went sledding. It was magical evening, and my fondest Christmas memory.

Best gift you’ve ever given: The best gift I’ve given was the gift I gave last year to my church in Las Vegas. I bought a cart full of toys for kids whose parents didn’t have much to give them. The fact that those gifts went to children who normally wouldn’t be able to afford those toys, was what made it very special . I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Favorite holiday: Definitely Christmas. It is a time when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. It is also a time when all the store windows are beautifully decorated & most of my family members get time off work. Favorite holiday tradition: My husband and I started this tradition when we moved into our first apartment. Every year we go to the same Christmas tree lot, where we select the perfect North Carolina spruce. Then we come home and decorate it while listening to the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. The first year we got a tree we didn’t have any ornaments, much less a tree topper, so I grabbed this old Godzilla toy that my husband has kept in his possession since he was a little boy and placed it at the top of the tree. I figured eventually we’d get an angel, or a star, or something equally hokey. That was five years ago and the Godzilla still tops our tree. I don’t think we’ll ever replace it. It’s a conversation starter and a perfectly quirky symbol of our relationship. Favorite holiday movie: Love Actually. I turn to mush every time I watch it. For a rom-com, it’s full of such surprisingly honest and subtle moments. Plus it has a fabulous soundtrack. I don’t think people realize it’s a Christmas movie because it’s not about Santa. It’s about love.

Best gift ever received: I can’t really say for certain what my best gift ever was ... but a top contender is my Fuji x-100 camera, I got it for Hanukkah last year, and I LOVE it so much. I usually think of electronics as the lowest on the gift totem pole (like an iPhone UPDATE from my husband for mother’s day made me really angry), but when it’s personal and special like is was, electronics can be a great gift. Favorite holiday memory: Every Christmas Eve, my dad’s side of the family joins us at my parent’s house for a feast. Favorite holiday tradition: My favorite tradition is lighting luminaries up the front walk of my grandmother’s house every Christmas Eve. My grandfather and I used to do it together, and I’ve carried on the tradition in remembrance of him since he passed away 15 years ago. Favorite holiday movie: Meet Me in Saint Louis. Favorite holiday tradition: On Christmas Eve, my mom still wraps up cozy PJs for us (from Santa!), and leaves them on the front porch so she can ring the doorbell and run away before we get there. Favorite holiday memory: When I was seven, my Dad and Grandpa stayed awake all night and built the most amazing swingset in our backyard (even involved digging holes and pouring concrete) AFTER I went to bed on Christmas Eve. This alone led me to believe that Santa was real for at LEAST another 5 years — I couldn’t understand how anything besides magic was how it got there!

Favorite holiday memory: My family is very very Italian and growing up on Christmas Eve my Noni would make fresh fried calamari by hand, including her own batter recipe, and we’d have to wait in line and could only get to eat one at a time as they were made. I’ve still never had better calamari than what she created! Favorite holiday moment: Here in the city, we have fresh Christmas tree vendors on most street corners. So on the day after Thanksgiving, we’ll walk over and pick out the most hilariously massive 6-7 foot fresh tree, then E will sling it over his shoulder and we’ll haul it home.
