All articles, trip reports and other contributions are welcome for inclusion in the magazine. They must be in the hands of the Editor by the first of the month. Please send them to: The Editor, Overland Cruisering, PO Box 1778, Geelong 3220
• Please submit articles as Word documents with no formatting. (No fancy formats as it will only have to be removed in preparing for publication). In particular DO NOT embed pictures in your documents • Images (photos) should be supplied as seperate JPEG files. The higher resolution the better. As a guide images should be of 300 pixel per inch with image files around 1-5MB fine. • If you have multiple images, please burn to a CD and post to Editor rather than trying to email numerous images. • Articles can be posted with normal photos. They will be scanned and returned to the author if a self-addressed envelope is provided.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
t’s great to be back home after a fantastic 6 week trip through Queensland. The rain certainly changed our itinerary a few times, but we still enjoyed every minute seeing more of our wonderful country. The Boots ‘n Bonnets day at Terrain Tamer was a big success. More than 50 TLCCV members attended the day with some putting their 4WDs through the Terrain Tamer test track .I do believe one of our members managed to get his 4WD stuck in the mud. With much embarrassment, they slowly radioed through that they did not have their snatch strap! Luckily some of our DA team was on hand to assist, plus a few words of advice. Thanks to Sandra Tanner for organizing the day. I think everyone enjoyed the factory tour and the free sausage sizzle and a glass of wine or soft drink. Leisurefest has just been run. I would like

to thank those members who offered their time to assist on the stand over the 5 days. I also want to acknowledge the hard work done by Judy Spence. Her previous marketing experience with organizing shows was extremely helpful. Judy put in many hours of hard work before, during and after the show to make our stand look very professional. I hear she is still massaging her tired feet. Angela is always busy organizing our social events. She would love to see more members at our final pub night at the Eltham hotel on Saturday 26th November. This is the same weekend as the Geelong Christmas weekend at Lake Fyans on the edge of the Grampians. All members are welcome to both events, so if you can make either, it would be great to see you. November is fast approaching, so our Monster Maintenance & Construction weekend will occur on 19th & 20th
November. Everyone is most welcome to join in over weekend. It is good to see a few new trips this month. We are always looking for new trip leaders to assist with organizing exciting club trips. If you are not sure what is happening around the club, then don’t forget to check in the latest magazine or log on to the TLCCV website and then click on the Members Info tab. The top item in the drop down box takes you directly to the TLCCV calendar. If you want to see other months, then click on the arrows on the either side of ‘Today’. VALE Sylvia Wentworth A Tribute to Sylvia by Judy Whitelaw (399)
John and I were privileged to know Sylvia (through the Club) for 30 years. We have been on many trips and social functions with Sylvia, Norm and son Scott. Some of our recollections are: The very first CruiserKhana where the roast meat was cooked on Weber BBQs, which then on Sunday morning were all lined up for cleaning. There would be Sylvia, pinney on, bent over up to her elbows in grime. The Mountains Appreciation dinner; at the lunch stop there was Sylvia with Norm and Scott dressed in black tie, to serve up the various salads and rolls. Sylvia was the Mother of the Bride in the function “Wedding in a Woolshed.”
Early working bees were getting too blokey so Sylvia and Robyn Stewart got together and decided to organize craft days up at Yarck for the girls. We had lots of fun including making paper and printing this with designs of leaves. Sylvia and Norm were there for the first Dinner in the Tunnel; they always put their hands up to help. Sylvia was the Secretary of the Club for a few years when Roger Morgan was President. We covered a lot of Australia on trips including the High Country, Desert trips – Victorian and Central Australian, Flinders
Ranges, Troubridge Island. Sylvia was always interested in other people and ready for a laugh and a chat. She was a wonderful, generous lady who we will very sadly miss. John and I send our condolences to son Scott and Louise, grandchildren Olivia and Luke. A thorough lady, always in for a good time and a very willing hand to assist, Sylvia was a good friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. The new establishment will have displays of the many interesting products that Battery World supplies. We need as many members as possible to come for the weekend, or even for a day. There is a host of tasks that require our attention for the safety of our members and the property. GEELONG BRANCH CHRISTMAS BREAKUP AT LAKE FYANS IN THE GRAMPIANS 25th, 26th & 27th November, 2016 Melbourne members are invited to join the Geelong Branch members for a weekend full of fun, friendship some four wheel driving and touring the beautiful surrounds of the Grampians. Alternatively there are plenty of wildflowers, photography, Abroiginal rock art, waterfalls, wineries, and the Halls Gap Zoo to name a few sights. Saturday night a BBQ meal will be provided. TOYOTA 86 VEHICLE TO BE RECALLED Toyota Australia has announced that it will recall almost 15,000 Toyota 86 vehicles built between April 2012 and March 2015 due to a potential loss of power steering assist. The recall impacts right-hand drive vehicles that are equipped with driver's knee airbags. Due to an improper wire harness layout, there is a possibility that the electric power steering harness may interfere with the instrumental panel lower cover which contains the driver's knee airbag on Australian specification vehicles. If this happens, there could be an electrical contact failure which may result in the loss of power steering assist. A warning light would then illuminate on the dashboard along with a short audible warning whilst manual steering would be maintained. To rectify this condition, the power steering electronic control unit and wire harness will be replaced in all impacted vehicles. Toyota Australia expects that parts will arrive at dealerships from September. A letter will then be sent by registered mail to all impacted owners to request that they make an appointment at their preferred Toyota dealer. The repair work will take just over an hour and will be carried out free of charge. There have been 62 reports in Australia with no accidents or injuries reported as a result of this condition. Toyota 86 Electric Power Steering (EPS) Assistance Q&A Q1: What is the condition? A1: The subject vehicles are equipped with electric power steering (EPS). During normal driving operation, the EPS rotation angle sensor terminals may wear over time. This wear of the connector terminal plating accumulates debris which may oxidise and become non-conductive. Under this condition if the driver's knee contacts the knee airbag lower cover, the EPS wire harness routed behind the cover also moves significantly which allows the terminal to contact the debris resulting in electrical contact failure. In this condition, the EPS ECU turns on the warning light and the steering assist is interrupted whilst manual steering is maintained. The loss of power steering assist will increase the steering effort at low speeds

which may increase the risk of an accident. Q2: What is the function of the Electronic Power Steering? A2: The electric power steering system generates torque to assist steering effort through operation of the motor and reduction gear installed on the steering column shaft. The power steering electronic control unit (ECU) determines direction and the amount of assistance required in accordance with vehicle speed and signals from sensors built into the steering column assembly. Q3: Which and how many vehicles are involved? A3: There are 14,906 Toyota 86 vehicles involved in the Australian market. Please refer to below VIN table for production period details. The group of 6 vehicles were briefed by our lovely trip leaders, Baz and Viv on the plan for the day. This time our day trip would be a more scenic drive than a low range adventurous one. As the early morning sun rose over a chilly Sunday morning, we headed off on our adventure. From the start, Baz and Viv made sure we kept our vehicle order and followed correct convoy procedure. Departing Yarra Glen, we headed to the Toolangi Forest taking the HealesvilleKinglake road. It was here that we relieved our tyre pressures and headed off the black top onto the dirt tracks of the Toolangi Forest. The tall, towering green trees were striking and swayed in the fresh, calming

After a quick radio communication, we thankfully retreated to the main track before our vehicles succumbed to the narrowing track. After we had regained our order, we drove to the Kalatha Giant tree. Here we walked amongst the most beautiful trees. It felt like we were in the land of the giants. We were all dwarfed by the massive Kalatha Giant tree. The tree is believed to be between 300-400 years old. Everyone looked fascinated by the surrounding beauty of this natural towering tree. After our stroll, we took a short drive to our morning tea location. We all took the opportunity to have a coffee break. Most members were well prepared with coffee

cups in hand; us newbies had muesli bars but no coffee. It was so nice when Chris and Greg Burr offered us some really hot black coffee as we all chatted about our varying 4WD experience. Our next stop was the Snob Creek falls. WOW! We were all mesmerized. At the bottom of a few steps lay a river that turned into a gushing waterfall. The waterfall was hypnotic as the torrent effortlessly spilled over the falls. There was a fantastic viewing platform and everyone had an opportunity to take a photo against the spectacular backdrop. Eildon pondage was just the spot to stop for a bite to eat. The playground was a delight for the kids that were along for the ride. We all gathered at the tables for our lunch, and a bit of a chat about 4WD adventures, camping spots and Australian

to test the chainsaw. The last stop on our way back was the glorious Cathedral Ranges. The stunning razor-back mountain range looked so close from where we stood. We walked out and took some family photos in this breathtaking area. I felt a bit jealous of the home owners at the bottom of the majestic range; it would be amazing waking to that backdrop every day. The trip was an excellent opportunity to share a wonderful afternoon negotiating some peaceful bush tracks, winding black top and spectacular views with like-minded individuals. As we parted ways in Yarra Glen, Baz gave a quick speech thanking the group for making the trip a successful one. What a great adventure with great company. Anouchka Sank (2772)
MAINTENANCE & CONSTRUCTION WEEKEND
Maintenance & Construction weekend – 24th & 25th September, 2016 There was a good turnout with the following 16 members present: Jan Chivers and Ken Hildebrand – Bret Walker – Chris Treble – Eamonn King – Barry & Viv Gardener – Neil Chambers – Garry Cooper – Forge Villella – Paul Langenberg – Heather Cale – Colin Low – Bill Motschall – Trajco Vilarov – Brian Stewart. Big effort with firewood mainly collected from Rennies Lane as road works are under way and a number of trees had been cut down, the bins are full again. Other items done were: burning a pile of scrub, gravel to low spots on entry track

touring culture. Baz mentioned that we were next heading to the Skyline road through to Alexandra. This was an epic drive, picturesque with sweeping bends and spectacular views with Eildon lake framed in the background. Alexandra itself is a quaint little village with architecture dating back to the late 1800s. The group was fascinated by this beautiful place from a bygone era. We continued to meander our way through the Rubicon on our return to Yarra Glen when Baz alerted us to a wombat crossing the road into the bushland. We managed to get a fleeting glimpse as it scurried back into the bush. The dirt track was mostly dry, however there were times when we all had to negotiate some decent potholes and fallen debris. We negotiated a few fallen gums, but thankfully we did not need
between 1st & 2nd gates and clearing drains. A cage built on the rear of the water tanker to hold the hoses. Wheels repaired and replaced on barrows and the concrete mixer. Solar panel installed on tractor shed to trickle feed the tractor battery. A second LED light over the fireplace, a soft one so we can compare the two. Fire alarm checked, water pumped and a general tidy up around the hut area. Once again a good team effort for another great weekend with lots of discussion around the fire. A very disappointing and frustrating occurrence has been the removal of logs closing access to the lush green area above the Garvey’s Gully camping area and driving
through and chopping it all up. The log with the NO ENTRY sign on it was pushed aside. At least 2 vehicles went through. Three dead trees have been dropped to close that area again and hopefully those responsible (or should I say irresponsible) will not remove barriers again. There is no reason to go that way as there are 4 ways out of the gully that are drivable tracks. It has been noted all members that signed in since the DA weekend in August. I woke to rain and inclement weather in Heathmont, but no worries it was a Geelong social day and somehow Alison (our Social Secretary) had a fine day with sun shining. I travelled to Geelong, picked up Kelvin and his mother, and we headed off to the “One Day Estate,” a winery with a great fire. No need for the fire as it was only a tad chilly. Being inquisitive, I asked: “Why One Day?” The reply: “Because it’s open on One Day in the week – Sunday!” We had a good turnup, eighteen people who enjoyed the selection of foods; curry,
risotto and paella – all cooked in large cauldrons. The choice is a selection of each or one only. Having had the selection, I can attest it is all yummy. The wine is not bad either. For the Melbourne folk asking why a winery? I can answer it is not always a winery, sometimes it’s a cidery, or a restaurant, but it’s all about getting together, enjoying each other’s company and having fun on days/months when many a good track, or a bad one, is closed in the Otways and the High Country. Come the warmer weather, we have
barbecues and trips or just outings. Think about joining us for our Christmas breakup at Lake Fyans Caravan Park in the Grampians. There are plenty of camper/caravan/tent sites and even cabins. No doubt there will be more information in the magazine, weekend wrap, Facebook, etc. If you do intend joining us, please notify Alison (contact details in the magazine) so there will be enough meat for you. he group drove up Friday night and camped at the Wonky Stables just outside the Wonky Donkey (Forrest). It was much better here as Gellibrand campgrounds were under water given all the rain we have had. The group comprised all age groups, but we all got along even the kids got on well.

The first day we had a meeting early in the morning with our leader Graeme Innis. We had a total of eight cars this time and in each were: the Innis family, the Lilley family (Danny, Abby, Rhys and Hayden), Lilley family (Matt and Sara), Emmerson family, the Burr family, the Connors family, the Vanderbronk family and the Villella family.

Saturday morning we started with a nice sunny day. Although it was muddy and wet, the rain held off and the sun came through. In the convoy we were tail end Charlie as we set off from the Wonky Donkey and headed towards our first 4WD track for the morning. Roadknight Creek road was a pretty easy going track, although it was a bit slippery and a little muddy. Dad tells me we were in high range most of the way. We drove on a number of tracks that morning such as: Roadknight Creek Rd, Ridge Rd, Bridge Track, Old Lardner’s Track, Rifle Range Rd, Cricket Pitch Rd, Tuckers Orchard Rd, Wait a while Rd and Youngs Creek Track. They were all pretty much the same and I didn’t need to hold on to the Jesus bar….for long. Somewhere in here we stopped at the local football oval (I think it was called Carlisle River Recreational Reserve) and we had morning tea. Mum and dad had coffees and I had a hot chocolate – yum! We all had a bit of a chat and a catch up, and then headed off to Triplet Falls. Triplet Falls was a nice small break with a beautiful walk and view and LOTS and LOTS of steps. I think that it was definitely worth all those steps personally.

Gellibrand River
The falls were gushing and fantasmagoracle (that means it was grouse) and later we found out that our leader, Graeme purposely made the tour at this time for that reason, so we could see all the falls at their best. Once we did the 1,000,000 step walk we treated ourselves to lunch. Once we packed ourselves up ready to go, we made our way to Stevenson’s Falls via Upper Gellibrand Rd. Once we arrived at Stevenson’s Falls, we all went for a walk to stretch our legs and to see the spectacular water works.

This time we were pretty much on flat ground so it was easy but yet again I still think it was amazing and worth the walk any day. Once we were back at the cars we set off for the Wonky stables for a nice time around the campfire, and later on to the Wonky Donkey (pub) for dinner and to say farewell to the Lilleys. That was day one of the Otways adventure. Day 2: We all slept in as it was Father’s day. After brekky, the Emerson and Vanderebronk family left the tour and headed home. After wishing them all well, the remaining members of the
group prepared to head towards Erskine Falls. Iven all the rain in the last few weeks, Graeme took a different track; we all took a right hand turn onto Love’s Rd and headed towards the falls. Erskine falls were absolutely spectacular and some of us even ot to cross at a shallow area of the river/falls and explored further. Sadly after this we all had to say our goodbyes after this and make our own way home. The Otways were a beautiful place to go off road. OW!! What more can one say, a great day with enthusiastic people. Simon, you promised challenging and difficult, and you delivered. Our day started in Avoca with sunshine – no rain – and all of us keen to get started. After Simon’s short debrief, we all headed off towards the day’s challenges. Bring it on!. We left the black top onto the dirt and took a little detour to the left through mud and puddles, where we could see the after effects of the Avoca river’s flooding with debris lying everywhere, only to hit the black top again. (Matt Lilley thanked everyone for coming and hoped we had all enjoyed the trip). Simon gave a little chuckle as we turned left and headed for the quarry. We aired down at the quarry whilst also checking out the area. All done, Simon set off up the first climb not getting very far on his first attempt, only to come back down and try again, giving the pedal a few

more berries this time. Simon suggested some track building to assist some vehicles to get through the very large holes and ruts. Must say it was exhilarating to get to the top. Everyone enjoyed the thrill of the climb and supporting each other. We stopped on the side of the track for morning tea with everyone talking about the morning’s first climb. Simon called
time to go and to get ready for the next climb. Tongue in cheek, Simon states the next track is waiting and is a little more difficult, but the view is worth the climb. He was right. Slowly we all made our way up to the summit where we had lunch. What a view, beautiful, no wind, sun shining and the blue sky mixed with soft fluffy clouds with visions going on and on. Awesome. Lunch over, we headed off towards Old Bluff track. Mmmmm, well that’s what Simon had intended, but he took a wrong turn. Left instead of right, but was quick to pick up that he should’ve turned right. Mr Hook did get a mention a couple of times through the day I must admit. There was quite a bit of banter over the radios and a lot of laughter. We all successfully made our way up and down tracks that I never personally thought I would ever be able to do, but with the guidance of an experienced leader on these tracks, we all did it without a problem – well, a couple of us did have a couple of goes, but still got there. Two tracks from memory we drove were “Donkey Track” and “Mount Warrenmang.” Old Bluff Track was to be the challenge of the day. WOW! Impressive. Three tracks to choose from. I chose mine very quickly while

others started to climb up Old Bluff checking out the ruts and doing some track building to assist their climb. Simon got himself into position and we all stood and watched in awe as he slowly climbed to the top with precise wheel placement on the first part of the climb. Next up, Damian decided he was going to climb. After a shaky start Damian backed up and tried again with a bit of scraping and slipping sideways. Almost halfway Damian was caught up on a rock under his diff. Trying to get himself free and start moving again, then bang. The front RH CV snapped. Oh no!! This mishap swung the DA boys into action. It was very impressive to see our DA boys in an actual situation. Damian driving backwards under winch conditions with instructions from Simon. Great work to Simon, Matt and Darren as they winched Damian’s vehicle back-
wards down Old Bluff Track safely with no further damage. Glad we have these guys teaching us our DA. Once we had all turned around, we headed back towards Avoca stopping at the car park where Greg and Damian tried to take off the CV but unfortunately it wouldn’t budge. After a quick cleanup we headed back into Avoca where we finished the trip. Everyone said their goodbyes and headed off for home. T E R R A I N T AI M P ER FACTORY VISIT

ore than fifty TLCCV members attended a very pleasant and informative day at Terrain Tamer’s Australian headquarters in Sunshine on 24th September. The large TLCCV contingent was joined by some members from LROC and the FJ Cruiser Clubs. Terrain Tamer rarely open their doors to Clubs, with this special event providing full access to the entire plant for those lucky enough to attend. The day was judged to be very successful by Terrain Tamer who said they may consider further visits in the future. If so, I would encourage as many members as possible to avail themselves of the opportunity. Along with the various activities that Terrain Tamer put on, the day was a combination “Boots ‘n Bonnets”, where members had the opportunity to display their vehicles, show others how they had set them up for touring, along with the chance to sell excess 4WD and camping gear. The vehicles started arriving before 9:00 am, and like all the days activities, Terrain Tamer had staff efficiently directing 4WD parking. One of the aspects of the day, which could not be faulted was the full on commitment that Terrain Tamer put into ensuring the success of the event. There was plenty of staff on hand that couldn’t do enough to make us all welcome, and assist with any enquiries. Everyone registered on arrival with Skye and Jess ticking off names and providing all with a hefty showbag of goodies. Frank kicked off proceedings by welcoming all those present, followed by everyone being split into three groups, with three different activities concurrently staged. Our group commenced with a tour of the warehouse, with Brent providing a very informative dialogue on the products that Terrain Tamer manufacture, how they provide similar products to genuine parts, but built to much higher and load bearing capacity. The many lanes of products reached to the roof of the large

warehouses, with Terrain Tamer stocking an amazing array of products. I would encourage members to visit their website and check out the comprehensive online catalogue. We visited the packing area for product kits, the research and development area, where a couple of Toyotas were on the hoist, and on to where a staff member was fully rebuilding a transmission. Even the distribution and packing area was very interesting. Along with the various vehicle parts, Terrain Tamer also manufacture a range of quality Flashlube engine additives, with their own production line capable of filling and labelling the various bottles. From the warehouse and factory our group moved to the fun area, with Terrain Tamer’s very own 4WD track, plus a couple of Tom Cars beckoning. The 4WD test track sees a number of shipping containers buried to create numerous sharp inclines. Not unlike parts of our CruiserKhana course, there was a tyre bed, off camber driving areas and various mud and slippery challenges. The Tom Car rocketed off down the track, with both Walter and Maria enjoying a fast lap of the course. Members were invited to bring their own vehicles up and drive the course. Several of the FJ Cruiser boys quickly fronted up, and very quickly their lack of a driver awareness course became obvious. A grey FJ Cruiser promptly sank on the tyre bed, another Cruiser struggled on an incline and also needed to be recovered. The same vehicle failed on a slippery incline. Meanwhile Greg West slipped around the course without any dramas, as did Matt and Simon. Whether completing the course as a passenger in a Terrain Tamer vehicle, in your own 4WD or in one of the Tom Cars, this was a fun activity that everyone enjoyed. From the track we ventured into the well stocked Terrain Tamer showroom, where we were given a briefing on various products. There were special prices
for club members and many of us took advantage of the generous discounts. The weather was glorious, as was the comprehensive BBQ lunch that was provided. With a choice of 4 types of sausage, the freshest bread rolls and buttered bread, along with onions and condiments, and the hungry masses were soon content. To wash them down there was a choice of bottled water, soft drinks to beer and wine. Alan Gray was on hand all day answering technical questions as were company owner Frank and marketing manager Brent. Many stayed on to shop, to have their vehicle technical issues addressed or just to socialise with fellow members and Terrain Tamer staff. This was an outstanding day, and our thanks are extended to the Terrain Tamer team for their hospitality, planning for the day, handling of the crowd, access to their 4WD course and the generous product discounts. An outstanding success. This is a great Australian company and I would encourage members to check out their many products that will enhance and improve your 4WD.
