Speaking of our fearless leader, happy birthday goes out to Christina FuocoKarasinski. Terry Benelli has been appointed to service as interim District 2 Councilmember, filling the spot created by the ascension of Vice Mayor/District 2 Councilman Alex Finter to mayor. A 28-year Mesa resident, Benelli is the owner of a home owners association management company. She also spent seven years as the Executive Director of the Neighborhood Economic Development Corporation (NEDCO) in downtown Mesa.

Tribe Multisport cycled, swam and ran its way into 6655 E. McDowell Rd., Suite 101, Mesa. The City of Mesa has been bestowed with more honors. It received the prestigious J. Robert Havlick Award for Innovation in Local Government. The Alliance for Innovation presented Mesa with the award for the City’s higher education recruitment initiative called “How Mesa Became a College Town.” The initiative was selected

and recognized at the Transforming Local Government Conference awards luncheon April 23 in Denver and was presented to Mesa City Council at their May 19 meeting. The “Sky’s” the limit for two performers from Mountain View High School. Sky and Talon Duncan—members of the family Yellow Bird Indian Dancers—will represent their school, state and nation in June at an international festival in Bergamo, Italy. The boys will perform in Europe in June at the Spirit of the Planet Festival in Bergamo, Italy. The international festival will feature performances and presentations by tribal groups from around the world May 30-June 15.

Hermosa Vista Elementary (Samantha Johnson, coordinator); and Third place, Whitman Elementary (Sandy Peterson, coordinator). These three teams competed in the Regional Battle of the Books in Gilbert. Mesa’s top teams went up against teams from Chandler, Gilbert, Higley, Queen Creek/Combs and the newly added Deer Valley School District. Five teams finished the battle with perfect scores. A tiebreaker resulted in Gilbert’s Patterson capturing first, Chandler’s Weinberg taking second and Mesa’s Franklin East team of Ethan Fuller and Riley Duemler placing third.

Mesa students just finished the 18th year of Battle of the Books districtwide competition. With 47 elementary schools participating, it took three nights and five battles to determine the top three teams: First place, Franklin East Elementary (Denise Lee, coordinator); Second place,
