grub
The Coweta County Board of Commissioners approved changes to the county’s alcohol ordinances, reducing the required distances between businesses with alcohol licenses and churches, schools, and residences. The distance requirements for both package and on-premise consumption alcohol licenses were eliminated for private residences and publicly-owned recreation facilities. Previously, no alcohol license could be issued for business within 200 feet of publicly-owned recreation facilities and 150 feet of residences. The distance requirement for schools and colleges was reduced from 200 yards to 100 yards. Additionally, the ordinance changed the way the required distances are measured. Previously, the distance was measured in the shortest straight line, from the building seeking the alcohol license to the property line of the home, school, church or park. The new method of measuring is main entrance to main
entrance, measured along the “paved travel way” between the two properties. The distance requirements do not apply for consumption license if a church, school, college or alcoholic treatment center are located in a commercial zoning district. The new distance requirement between schools and stores selling alcohol mirrors state law. There are no state distance requirements for residences and parks. The commissioners also approved a new ordinance that allows current holders of alcohol licenses for on-premise consumption to get a temporary permit for special events, allowing alcohol to be served in the business’s parking lot during the special event. “We spend a lot of time legislating people and their alcohol,” said Commissioner Al Smith. “It’s baffling to me why we spend so much time with alcohol use when it’s such a detriment to society and the public at large.” The ordinance allowing special events permits was approved by a 4 to 1 vote, with Smith opposed.
FAMILY FEATURES
W
hen game day arrives and friends and family are gathered around the big screen to cheer your team to victory, the only thing missing is some great grub to make the celebration complete. Putting together an all-star spread is actually easier than you may think. Simple recipes featuring high-quality ingredients make it possible to serve up big flavor without a lot of fuss. Follow these tips to score a game day menu that will let your guests enjoy themselves to the fullest.
Barbecue Chicken Nachos
Create a DIY pizza station. Prepare dough ahead of time or purchase individual serving size crusts and invite guests to make their own personal pizzas. Provide an array of fresh veggies, meats and herbs for endless combinations. Don’t forget plenty of quality cheese, and for a special twist, add some unexpected flavors, such as Jarlsberg Brand Cheese. Best known as a classic wedge, this nutty, mild cheese is also wonderful shredded for a uniquely delicious pizza flavor. Get guests started with this Sausage, Mushroom and Herb Pizza and then invite them to get creative on their own.
Top it off right. No game day party is complete without chips and dip. Take your nachos to another level with premium toppings such as these Barbecue Chicken Nachos. Other upgraded topping options: grilled steak or chicken, grilled corn and onions, a variety of flavorful cheeses, homemade guacamole, diced fresh veggies, seasoned olives and spices, such as Cajun or Caribbean jerk.
Bring the heat. Spice things up with peppers as an added ingredient to other treats like pizza and nachos, or make the pepper the star, as with these Jalapeno Poppers, which blend the heat of a whole jalapeno balanced

Not everyone is fortunate enough to turn a life-long passion into a career. However, Newnan native Chris Haack is one man who has been able to successfully follow his dreams. Haack has spent the last two decades coaching golf at the University of Georgia, and in the process, he has turned the Bulldogs into one of the nation’s best college teams. Haack cut his teeth on the
sport as a teenager in the 1970s while his family was a member of the Newnan Country Club. “I still have very fond memories of my days in Newnan and at Newnan Country Club,” Haack said by phone from Athens. “It’s where I first played the game.” After graduating from Newnan High School, Haack attended West Georgia College in Carrollton where he was a member of the Braves golf team. A Quest-ionable Idea ALEX MCRAE
H
umans can’t help it. If there’s a question, we want the answer. If there’s a problem, we want the solution. If something is just out of reach, we want longer arms. And when we really, really, really want something, we don’t cross our fingers or click our heels. We start a quest. Webster’s Dictionary defines “quest” as “a long or arduous search for something.” Among literature's most entertaining adventures is Frodo Baggins’ quest to destroy the troublesome gold band in The Lord of the Rings. King Arthur sent some of his most famous knights off on fruitless quests for the Holy Grail. Over one thousand years later, Indiana Jones was hunting the same thing on the big screen. One of history’s most
famous quests was undertaken by Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon, who wandered through Florida for years seeking the Fountain of Youth. De Leon's quest for eternal life ended in 1521 when a Florida native shot him with an arrow. He could have saved himself some time and trouble by reading the Bible, which clearly states that every man’s days are numbered. That settles it for me. But a group of scientists have decided they can improve on God’s formula. This bunch just announced they were on a “quest to cure aging.” Let that sink in. These dudes intend to “cure aging.” A few observations here. First, the term “cure aging” implies that aging is not a natural part of life but a pesky medical condition, like chicken pox, whooping cough and toenail fungus, all of which can now be “cured” or prevented. Maybe the term “cure” is intended to raise interest. It has definitely gotten the interest of researchers hoping to win the just-announced $1
million Palo Alto Longevity Prize. The prize is being offered by Palo Alto Investors, headed by radiologist Dr. Joon Yun, who says the prize money will set researchers on a quest to "hack the code" of aging. It’s interesting that the prize sponsor is an investment firm. You don’t suppose investors hope to cash in on a “cure” for aging, do you? Not at all. At least according to program partner David Sinclair, Ph.D., a professor of genetics and codirector of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at the Harvard Medical School. Sinclair said, “The goal is similar to all medical research, which is to make people healthier and keep people alive longer so we can have more productive lives and not be such a burden to society." Question: If Sinclair's crowd believes that aging people are a “burden to society,” why do they want these “burdens” to hang around longer? Replace the
word “burden” with “human guinea pig” and you may have the answer. The work is already underway, and Sinclair is excited. He said, “We are finding genes and molecules that we can take as a pill that would slow down every disease from Alzheimer’s to diabetes to cancer, plus give us more energy during our whole lives." Sinclair admits that any medication can have adverse effects, and this one is no exception. The big one? Sinclair says, “Side effects would include living longer…” So longevity is a “side effect” of the medication? Can’t wait to hear the warnings on the TV ads… “Call your doctor if you have a heartbeat lasting longer than 100 years.” Living a healthy lifestyle is a good thing. Tinkering with God’s time clock is not. If we’re approaching the point where “living longer” is considered a “side effect” instead of a blessing, I’m ready to move on. And not to a nicer retirement home.

Earns Esteemed 2015 Angie’s List Super Service Award Award ref lects company’s consistently high level of customer service HIS Plumber has earned the service industry’s coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award, reflecting an exemplary year of service provided to members of the local services marketplace and consumer review site in 2015. “We are very honored to accept the Angie’s List Super Service Award. As a Christian owned and operated company, we believe that everything we do should be done as if to God. Since the start of our company in 1997, we have committed ourselves to providing excellent service at a fair price. I believe winning this award is an indicator that we are indeed succeeding in doing just that. Additionally, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our many customers that have blessed us with your positive feedback. Without you we would not have been able to achieve this award,” said Peter of HIS Plumber. “Only about 5 percent of the plumbing companies in the Greater Atlanta area have performed so consistently well enough to earn our Super Service Award,” said Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks. “It’s a really high standard.” Angie’s List Super Service Award 2015 winners have met strict eligibility requirements, which include an “A” rating in overall grade, recent grade, and review period grade; the company must be in good standing with Angie’s List, pass a background check and abide by Angie’s List operational guidelines. Service company ratings are updated daily on Angie’s List. Companies are graded on an A through F scale in areas ranging from price to professionalism to punctuality.
Throw a Sensational Super Bowl Party
A
s the opening kickoff draws closer, here are some keys to Super Bowl party success.
Know your playing field.
Take inventory of how many you can seat comfortably. You may need to move out larger furniture and move in folding chairs if you plan to accommodate more guests.
Size up your competition. There will be thousands of like-minded individuals planning their own parties and utilizing the same

services in your local area. Those who need to rent tables and chairs and rely on a caterer (or the services of the nearest pizza joint) should plan early.
Establish your play book.
Will this be a chips-and-dips type of party or will you be offering more substantial fare? Is it adults-only or are guests able to bring their kids along? Make a list of questions that need to be answered and set up the party parameters.
Hardcore fans will not want to miss any of the action. Therefore, refreshments and other components of the party will have to coordinate to the timing of the game. Do the bulk of food preparation before kickoff and allow guests to mingle and fuel up before the game starts. Save finger foods and other snacks that are easily accessible for when the game starts. Guests can take a break at halftime and grab food and beverages that are
set up buffet-style in another room.
Don’t run interference.
Ensure that the television is situated so nobody’s view is obstructed and that people moving in and out of the room need not cross in front of the TV to get food or use the restroom. To make things comfortable for the largest number of people, consider having two TVs tuned into the game running in separate rooms. This way, guests can mingle and not be tied to one area.

LaGrange-Macon highway still possibility By W. Winston Skinner winston@newnan.com The Georgia Department of Transportation drew up plans for a highway connecting Macon and LaGrange almost three years ago, and some regional officials would like to see that project move forward. Ed Bledsoe, a former mayor of Moreland who now serves on the
Three Rivers Regional Commission, asked about the road project at the most recent regional commission meeting. The current plan calls for the road to pass through Meriwether County – north of the county seat of Greenville. “Discussion has been underway for several years,” noted Carolyn McKinley, president of the

By W. WINSTON SKINNER winston@newnan.com Turin is one of Coweta’s smaller towns, but the city has attracted the attention of a professional filmmaker. Barbie Beach – the quirky roadside attraction in town that features plastic dolls in various tableaux – may have attracted Daniel Espeut to Turin. The city’s 125th anniversary, however, provided some other authentic, small town Southern moments that led Espeut to collaborate with the town’s leaders in capturing some stories. The highway could have major economic impact for Meriwether County. “Since the proposed route is

Blacksmith has vision for local craft school By Sarah Fay Campbell sarah@newnan.com In this technology-driven, fast-paced, online world, there’s something to be said for the old ways. But some of those old ways, and old skills, are fading away. Cowetan Michael Sebacher wants to help preserve that knowledge before it is lost. The local blacksmith has a vision for a school where local artisans and craftspeople can share their skills with others. It could also be a place where those who don’t want to teach could still work on their crafts and display them. First, he needs the teachers. He’d like to talk to anyone local who does folk art and crafts who would be interested in being a part of the school. He’s also working on a location. It’s not necessarily limited to arts and crafts. Things like pickling and food preserving, and even beer and wine making might fit in, too. However, “we’re trying to avoid the tech slant,” he said. “The urge to make by hand, to create, is like the same level as the urge to reproduce or eat,” Sebacher said. Thousands of years ago, “you had to build your

HAACK
Continued from page 1
later turned into a successful coaching career. Just a year ago, the Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Final Four, but that is just one small chapter in Haack’s impressive career since moving to Athens two decades ago. Since taking the reigns of the University of Georgia golf program in 1996, Haack has led the Bulldogs to two national titles, the first in 1999, and the second in 2005. The Bulldogs’ success under Haack’s watchful eye, hasn’t stopped there. Georgia has tuned up for its strong showings on the national collegiate golf stage with seven SEC titles. The Bulldogs have also won an impressive 51 team events during Haack’s coaching career. When the Bulldogs didn’t bring home the national title, the squad has often been in contention. Georgia has nine top-10 performances and 15 top-20 efforts at the NCAA tournament with Haack at the helm, and the Bulldogs’ coach hopes to add to those totals for the
next several years. “I am very grateful the search committee at Georgia thought I was the right man for the job when they named me the school’s head coach,” he said.” Haack prepared for his career at Georgia in the early 1990s by serving as the nonplaying team captain with the American Junior Golf Association, a Ryder-Cup style team format. He helped coach a young Tiger Woods, and found his coaching calling along the way. “It made me realize coaching and working with young players is something I might like to do,” he said. It was a good career move for the Newnan native who has coached 56 All-Americans and at least one in 17 of his 18 seasons at Georgia, keeping the Bulldogs among the nation’s elite college golf programs. Haack had big dreams from his first season with the Bulldogs. “That was the goal from the get-go,” Haack said. “We
wanted to contend for titles every year.” Georgia has been a springboard to the PGA tour for its most successful golfers. The University of Georgia’s most famous golfer, Bubba Watson, had traded Bulldog red and black for two green jackets with victories at the Masters in 2012 and 2014. “You could tell from the beginning that Bubba was a special player,” Haack said. “Sometimes, however, I think Bubba would tell you he is his own worst enemy. He has been very successful, but I think he could have maybe won even more.” Watson isn’t the only player on the PGA tour with ties to Georgia. At last year’s Masters, six of Haack’s former pupils teed-off in Augusta. All are making nice livings on tour, including Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Chris Kirk, Patrick Reed and Brendon Todd. In 2014, former Georgia players combined for eight victories on the PGA tour.
The success of his former players on tour can be a double-edged recruiting sword. Haack is the first to say coming to Georgia to play golf isn’t an automatic guarantee to future PGA stardom and riches. “I think there are a lot of golfers who think about playing on tour,” Haack said. “However, it takes a very special player to make it. The dedication it takes is unbelieveable. Many really good golfers come to the realization that they just won’t make it and aren’t willing to sacrifice things in order to make it. They get really serious about their school work and they are successful in other ways once they leave school.” Most golfers who play the sport at the major college level have grown up around the game with parents who have spent time and money helping their sons achieve an elite level of success. Haack has developed a
keen eye for recruiting those type players over the years, and they don’t have to have a picture-perfect golf swing to be successful at Georgia or at the college level. “It’s okay if a player has an unorthodox swing and might have raw talent, if he can play. The player with the best swing might not be the best player out there.” Whatever the formula Haack uses to find the world’s best players has worked, and the Bulldogs don’t appear to be going anywhere for years to come. Georgia should again be
one of the teams to beat this spring, and could easily be back at the Final Four. “I like this team,” Haack said. “Four of our guys coming back were on the Final Four squad last year. I think we should be pretty good.” For Haack, all the hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Newnan native was recently inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame. “That was a huge honor,” he said. “To realize how many people have been honored before me and to now be a part of it is really special.”
