Coweta Count y Sheri ff Mike Yeager was surprised to find his own face in a magazine last month. In the March/April issue of “Sheriff Magazine,” Yeager was the featured sheriff in the “Meet the Sheriff” section. Yeager said whenever he gets the magazine, he always flips to the back page to see if he knows the issue’s featured sheriff. “And lo and behold, there I was,” Yeager said. “Yeah, I know this person.” Yeager said there are more than 3,000 sheriffs nationwide, and in his 23 years serving as sheriff of Coweta County, he can’t remember seeing another Georgia sheriff featured in the magazine. “Sheriff Magazine” is published only six times a year, so a very small percentage of the nation’s sheriffs have been featured. The feature discusses Yea-

ger’s law enforcement career from a patrol officer with the Newnan Police Department to become the county’s sheriff, education path, involvement in many boards and associations and his service in the community. It also mentions some of his awards, including the 2006 Georgia Sheriff of the Year and the Governor’s Public Safety Award for Outstanding Contribution. The feature also gives some insight into Coweta County and the sheriff ’s off ice – which has around 240 personnel policing a 443-squaremile county with more than 130,000 residents. Many of the Coweta Sheriff’s Office community programs were also listed, such as t he Citizens Firea rms Safety training, the Jr. Law Enforcement Academy, Project SAFE, Project Lifesaver and the annual Mantracker Conference organized by the department.

Raleigh Studios in Senoia plans expansion Raleigh Studios Atlanta in Senoia is looking to expand. Scott Tigchelaar of Raleigh Studios and Kudzu Productions appeared before the Coweta County Board of Commissioners. The film production tax incentives passed several years ago have had a tremendous impact on the state, Coweta County and the studio. “We’re looking to accommodate our current tenant with expanded facilities,”

said Tigchelaar. “We’re looking forward to this and building out the rest of the site as quickly as possible.” Several years ago, Kudzu Productions obtained a rezoning for 8.48 acres on Chestlehurst Road, adjacent to the studio. At the time of that original submission, the plans showed brick structures, said Coweta Zoning Administrator Angela White. Since brick was offered, the

rezoning conditions ended up requiring brick. The applicants are willing to make the office building brick, but are asking for relief on the warehouses and sound stages. The commissioners voted unanimously to remove the brick requirement for the other buildings. “We thank you for what you do for Coweta,” said Chairman Bob Blackburn.

Raise money for your child’s school. As a newspaper, The Newnan Times-Herald strongly believes in literacy and ensuring your children - our future community leaders are well-educated about events in Coweta County. To that end, we are conducting a subscription drive contest with a portion of the proceeds of each new subscription sold going back to that student’s school. The proceeds are up to the discretion of each school and we only ask that they be earmarked for literacy, media and/or technology programs.
