Local track teams enjoy banner year in first season Eight runners headed to AAU Junior Olympics

Members of the Quinnessentials track and field team pose with their medals right before practice at Northgate High School. The team is in its first year of existance and is getting ready to head to the AAU Junior Olympics at Eastern Michigan University. Pictured, back row, are coach Scott Quinn, Jonathan Casey, Ryan Quinn, Peyton Laney and Josiah Quinn. First row, Aaron Fenimore, Dante Robinson, Abby Quinn and Samuel Quinn.

hen Scott Quinn formed the Quinnessentials track and field team earlier this year, he wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. What he got was a championship-caliber squad with plenty of experience already under its belt. Most of the team had already run for other programs, but in its inaugural season, the Quinnessentials team established itself as a squad ready to bring home medals. Recently, in a Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex, Quinn’s team earned three golds, three silvers, 11 bronze medals and seven coppers. Now the team that excels in both running and field events will try and garner more national recognition when it heads to Eastern Michigan for the AAU Junior Olympics. All nine members qualified for the Junior Olympics and eight will make the trek up Interstate 75 to participate in this year’s event. “We are really excited for the kids,” he said. “They do all the work, they get all the credit. We try and get them in shape and

Alan Jackson to release bluegrass album By Bradley Hartsell bradley@newnan.com

Newnan hero Alan Jackson will step away from the demands of commercial country radio to release the aptly titled “Bluegrass Album” on Sept. 23. According to Jackson’s website, Sammy Shelor, who plays banjo on the new album, says the idea was to produce a back-to-roots bluegrass album that didn’t, in the words of Jackson himself, “sound like all the other bluegrass albums country artists cut in this town.” Jackson’s debut album, “Here in the Real World,” was released in 1989 and he’s never gone longer than two years in between albums. “The Bluegrass Album” will be released on his own label, Alan’s Country Records, and is the followup to the 2012 release “Thirty Miles West.” For the majority of his 14 albums thus far, Jackson has kept the same classic sound that made him a country music star back in ‘89. His gift for stompin’ honky tonks and thoughtful ballads made him a megastar in the ‘90s and has given him status as country’s elder statesman in a time when honky-tonk is being marginalized into nostalgia. And as mainstream country music continues to blur into pop, rap, and rock ‘n roll, Jackson is staying true to himself and finally giving himself over to a project he has been hinting at for years. Shelor indicates that Ronnie Bowman and Marty Raybon are touchstones Jackson hopes to evoke on the new album, both legendary bluegrass figures many fans may have never even heard of. Despite the enormous success of Jackson simply putting his rhythm and charm to record, the left turn on “The Bluegrass Album” does come with precedence. 2006’s “Red on a Rose” was produced by Alison Krauss and traded

i n Ja c k s on’s classic honkytonk shuffle for subdued backroom ba l l ad s compr i sed of almost entirely cover songs . While lacking the pizzazz and countr y boy Alan Jackson f u n of ot her a lbu ms, “Red on a Rose” peaked at No. 1 on the country Billboard charts and even earned distinction as the best Jackson album to date by some critics. After returning to his familiar sound, Jackson is again subverting the trends of his peers by exploring bluegrass in a time it seems a forgotten commodity. The new album, unlike “Red on a Rose,” is made up of mostly original material, and the remaining tracks will include the likes of The Dillards’ “There is a Time,” John Anderson’s “Wild and Blue,” and a ¾-time version of “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” Shelor says that the songs are to vary between a healthy mix of “punchy, drivey” songs and ballads, which is sure to come as good news to Jackson fans who still like to dosey doe. Though country music’s popularity is arguably at an all-time high, thanks to crossover successes like Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton, and newcomer duo Florida Georgia Line, there are many fans who prefer their country music without all the new-age bells and whistles. Alan Jackson has always been a pillar for such fans, and with an old-fashioned bluegrass album on the way, Jackson will once again prove to be a timeless treasure. Jackson grew up in Newnan. Much of his family still lives here.

Abundant plates of fresh vegetables, delicate fish from the nearby sea and splashes of olive oil are all hallmarks of traditional meals found in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean diet has been embraced for thousands of years by those living along the Mediterranean Sea, and is now followed around the world as consumers discover its delicious flavor components and researchers uncover its countless health benefits, including helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes according to a study conducted by The New England Journal of Medicine. It’s easy to embrace this healthy lifestyle during grilling season by giving your grill a Mediterranean diet makeover with oils and vinegars. You can enjoy the benefits of the diet with out leaving home by making simple changes, such as swapping butter and

vegetable oil for Grapeseed Oil or Mediterranean Blend Olive Oil, and making homemade dressings and vinaigrettes by combining oils and vinegars in place of bottled versions. Grapeseed Oil, which has one of the highest smoke points of all oils and is a rich source of Vitamin E,

has a light taste that will not disrupt the flavors of food while cooking. This versatile, all natural oil is great to line your grill or pan with before cooking to prevent food from sticking. Ready to adopt a Mediterranean lifestyle at home? Check out the easy grilling recipes listed on page 6.

Dumb bunnies

ALEX mcrae

My feelings had been hurt a time or two. I’d even felt embarrassed, uncomfortable, and inadequate. Until I hit 7 years old, though, I had never been humiliated … totally, horribly, soul-scarring, ego-shattering humiliated. The worst part was having to tell my mother. How do you tell the woman who birthed you and fed you and loved you that you had been kicked out of accordion lessons? I’d have understood if the teacher had dumped me for lack of talent. Instead, I got booted because my ha nds were too small. He told me to tell mother my fingers were too short to even play “On Top of Old Smokey.” Forget about “Beer Barrel Polka.” Mother consoled me as well as she could. Then she started looking for other “activities” to keep me from driving her crazy. I was too young to join a gang or become a fireman, but I loved a magician I saw on the “Howdy Doody Show.” I conned the folks into buying me a magician starter kit and spent hours honing the basic skills. I never sawed people in half or made buildings disappear, but soon, I became passable at basic card and coin tricks and had a special f lair with my magic wand. After I performed at Ray Bloch’s birthday party and didn’t get booed, I dreamed about one day pulling a rabbit from a hat, which I considered the coolest magic trick of all. When it became clear that keeping a bunny in our small apartment wasn’t an option, my fondness for magic went "Poof." Now I’m glad. Otherwise, I might have wound up like Missouri performer Marty Hahne, who promotes himself as “The Reading Magician.” Hahne performs in public libraries. Young readers absolutely love his act. Hahne’s publicity material says “we guarantee you'll see a big crowd of happy kids and parents, get favorable publicity, and see books fly off the shelves … like magic!”

Since he’s a pro, Hahne uses a rabbit in his act. He didn’t know this was a problem until a local newspaper showed up at one of his appearances and published photos of the bunny act. United States Department of Agriculture officials saw the pictures, and faster than you can say “abracadabra,” tracked Hahne down and demanded to see his federal rabbit permit. Really. Ha h ne followed loca l requirements wherever he performed, but had no idea he needed a federal permit to use a rabbit in his act. He learned otherwise while federal rabbit police inspected his house for signs of abuse or neglect. It was obvious Hahne treated his rabbit like royalty, but an eagle-eyed inspector spotted the crate Marty’s rabbits traveled in. It was clean and fresh ... and totally illegal. Why? Because the travel cage wasn’t plastered with “ L i ve A n i m a l s ” s t i c k e r s , nor did it have arrow stickers pointing “Up” to prevent highly-trained rabbit rescue workers from turning the rescued rabbit upside down. Hahne finally got his USDAapproved stickers and thought he was good to go. Then, he received a letter demanding he file a multi-page written disaster plan spelling out specific actions he would take to help his bunny survive horrors like fires, f loods and deadly sharknados. T he pl a n a l so requ i red Marty to show how he would care for the rabbits after the danger had passed. If he wasn’t able to file a written disaster plan he could be fined or sent to rabbit jail. Of course, if Marty gets tired of dealing with government regulators that harm his reputation and threaten his income, he can always kill, skin, gut and eat his rabbit. That’s still perfectly legal. God Bless America.

68 feet in the javelin. Josiah Quinn also took a gold medal in the shot put. Peyton Laney also showed he could throw the javelin en route to a gold medal, too. Quinn is not putting too much pressure on his team. “The true measure for success is to set a personal best at every meet. If they do that, it is a successful week,” he said. “If you keep focusing on getting better, then the next thing you know, you are getting that medal.” At the state meet, the team participated in 31 events and set 25 personal best. At the regional meet, they set 15 personal best.

They will all be joined at this year’s event by Jonathan Casey, Peyton Laney, Aaron Fenimore and Dante Robinson in various events. Among the accolades during the first season were Samuel Quinn’s national record of

Several new stores opening in Newnan Pavilion By Clay Neely clay@newnan.com

In addition to Academy Sports and Outdoors, there is another new addition to Newnan Pavilion. Five Below bills itself as an extreme-value retailer with prices ranging between $1 and $5, and caters to teens and preteens with a wide assortment of trends and products, such as iPad and iPhone accessories, room décor and storage, sports and fitness equipment, fashion accessories and cosmetics, toys and games along with seasonal merchandise such as back-toschool items. “There is no other store quite like it,” states David Schlessinger, co-founder and executive chairman. “It provides name-brand, high-quality products in a comfortable,

upbeat and dynamic environment with friendly and attentive service.” The company has been growing quickly, with upwards of 250 stores across 18 states and more than 30 more stores set to open this year. Five Below has a dozen locations across Metro Atlanta since its first stores opened in the region in June 2012. The brand new location in the Pavilion off Highway 34 East at Interstate 85 was based upon a desire to capture the Newnan/Peachtree City demographic and company officials believed the Pavilion to be a perfect fit in terms of location and accessibility. Along with Academy Sports and Outdoors and Five Below, Jo-Ann Fabrics and

Crafts is also announcing the upcoming opening of a new store on Aug. 30 in the Newnan Pavilion with grand opening celebrations scheduled to take place Sept. 12 through 14. Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts will serve as a one-stop creative destination for sewing and crafting enthusiasts in the community.
