More to love Must Eats Awards

T he editor’s desk I blame Don Burke. There was a time when it was enough to have a comfy sofa, a TV and a few family photos on the mantelpiece. Then came a little show called Burke’s Backyard, spawning a flotilla of home renovation series from Backyard Blitz through The Block to the new kid Reno Rumble. Now it seems everyone’s a home stylist, wielding throw rugs and scatter cushions with abandon, dropping names like Charles and Ray Eames into conversation and drooling over egg-shaped baths. Home improvement has become a national obsession. This week we get with the zeitgeist with a special edition devoted to the best and latest trends and products for the home. We also sit down with Australia’s king of home improvement Scott Cam for a revealing interview with the man behind the tool-belt. I’ve joined in the fun, too, inviting two of Melbourne’s leading stylists into my home to update my own drab living room. Check out the video online. ●

f you had to describe an Australian archetype, Scott Cam would be a perfect fit. Carpenter, farm rouseabout, shipwright – building ocean-going prawn trawlers in Western Australia – sheep and cattle musterer, hay cutter and baler, cattle station hand and experienced in “50 smaller jobs”, all of them outside and manual. “We used to work 20 hours a day cutting hay,” he says. “I loved it; cold weather at night, open fires, hard work, hot, dusty (in the day), sitting on an open tractor for 20 hours.” There’s nothing Scott can’t make, build or fix. He built a house for his family with his own hands. “It is a good thing to say to your wife: ‘What would you like and I‘ll build it for you’.” It’s a sentence that would not come out of the mouths of too many Australians. “I was never allowed to touch my wife’s stockings because my hands were so rough I would ladder them,” he says. We’re talking while Scott changes into a dinner suit for our cover photograph. He talks as he climbs into the strides; no problem, he says, let’s get on with it. It’s fair to say that after 16 years of television fame, including a six-year Gold Logie-winning stint hosting The Block, Scott has kept his feet on the ground. “I don’t think I’ve changed that much,” he says. “I’m driving a better ute and I’m living in a better house; that’s about it.” And if part of the Australian male archetype is submerging emotions, as is often suggested, maybe Scott ticks that box too. His beloved father died aged 53, of cancer. Scott was just 22. When I ask how that has shaped him, he says, “I suppose it’s been pushed aside and you get on with it, don’t you? You had to get on with it. That’s life.” Does he reflect on it? “I have, but I try not to reflect too much. It’s one of those things you put at the back of your mind. If I did open up about those sorts of things it would be too traumatic for me. So I just try not to think about it, my whole life really. And that’s probably not very good, but that’s the Australian way, isn’t it?” He pauses. “I’ve never thought about it until you asked that question. I do find myself talking to my father every now and then when I’m driving.” It’s a poignant moment; it was his father who charted Scott’s course in life. His brother was a carpenter and Scott’s father “chose” carpentry for Scott too. “My father was a big strong man who was a fisherman like his father and his father,” Scott says. “I said, ‘I’m going up to Queensland, I’m going to work in the mines and make some money’. He said, ‘You start work with your brother on Monday; don’t be late’. That’s how I became a carpenter.” Scott worked in the trade for 30 years. “Carpentry sounds a bit glamorous but it’s bloody hard work in the heat and everything. Hard work is what I thrive on.” Scott has been a staple on Australian

television since appearing first on Burke’s Backyard in the ’90s and then Backyard Blitz. His timing was superb: he became a star in an era when people were fascinated by renovating. “We were the first building show and I was very lucky to be there on the ground floor,” he says. He remembers his screen test for Burke’s Backyard. “I used to have a beer every night on the way home, which I still do. We all worked really hard in those days and then we’d go to the pub every afternoon on the way home.” One day he was in the pub, his black and tan kelpie Lizzie waiting outside. “A producer came in and said, ‘Do you want to do a screen test for a TV show?’ He was just there having a drink with his girlfriend. His role with Don Burke was to go and find carpenters or builders to screen test for this new show … I said, ‘No, mate, it’s not my go, I don’t know anything about that’.” The producer copied down his phone number from Scott’s ute and later called again. Scott did the screen test. “A month later he rang and said, ‘You’ve got the job’. I thought, ‘That’ll be a bit of fun for a couple of days’.” He was 37 and his life was about to change.

A

t the dawn of the renovation revolution, Scott was the complete package: straight-talking, no-frills, no fuss, a highly-competent tradesman who was comfortable in front of a camera. And with his broad Aussie twang and wink-of-the-eye blokiness he was what marketers would, a decade or so later, come to call “relatable”. Even his dog Lizzie became a star, appearing on TV with him described as “site manager”. Sixteen years later, and now the lynchpin of two of Channel Nine’s most popular shows – The Block and Reno Rumble – he knows that transferring the discipline of a tradie to TV was a winner. “I’ve created some longevity because people might be putting a show together and thinking,

‘Who can we get to host that? Maybe we’ll get Scott Cam, because he’s easy, he turns up on time, he’s always there, it doesn’t matter what conditions, he’ll always work’. That comes from my trade background over 30 years. We got up at 6 o’clock every morning and got home at 6 at night.” After years of travelling around Australia in his 20s, working myriad jobs, he met his wife Ann in Sydney and stayed there. They have been married 21 years and Ann now works full-time as his PA. They have three children: Charlie, 19, and twins Bill and Sarah, 16. “Everything you do is for your family, to create a better lifestyle for them, for your kids to grow up in a nice environment. “We’re a very tight family. We holiday together. We go away together. Even at 19 Charlie still comes away with us on holidays and he’s a big, strong, good-looking boy. He’s got the world at his feet but he still comes away with us because he wants to.” And dad being famous? “The telly thing has been very underplayed at our house. When I started in television 16 years ago the twins were three weeks old and Charlie was two. So their whole lives it’s been me on the telly. It’s just my job. I just say, ‘I’m going to work’. They don’t even watch me on the telly much these days.” When shooting The Block and Reno Rumble, Scott spends a three-month block in Melbourne. “I love Melbourne. I’m a big swimmer – Port Phillip Bay. Probably a little bit cold in the winter down here. I’ll still go for a swim, jump in, jump out. It’s as good as exercise [for] getting the heart racing.” Back home, Scott runs his own working cattle station in Mudgee, with 200 head of black Angus. “It’s my dream come true. The concept of primary production is what I like.” I ask how wealth has changed him. “I still get round in the same gear and I still drive a ute. I’ve bought and renovated five houses to

Not planning out the whole job. To fix that … you plan out the whole job.

2

Going over budget. To fix that, don’t change your plans halfway through. Stick to your original plan, then you’ll stick to the budget.

3

Put safety first at all times. Look out for eyes, ears, wear your boots and your gloves. If you injure yourself, you’re never going to finish.

4

Don’t get ahead of yourself. Don’t be over-confident with what you can or can’t do. Be realistic and that comes back to the planning stages. Like don’t put a second storey on a house without professional help.

5

Never take on jobs that should be taken on by specialised trades, such as sparkies, plumbers and even plasterers sometimes. If you do put a second storey on a house, leave it to the professionals. step up the mark slowly, slowly … It’s taken me a long time to get to a nice joint.” He’s comfortable with his level of fame – “unless there’s paparazzi taking photos of me coming out of the water with my shirt off. That annoys me a bit because I’m getting fatter as I’m getting older. So my wife won’t swim with me because she doesn’t want her photo taken.” At 53 he’s keen to stay on TV. “I’m getting on. There’s got to be a young bloke coming through at some point. I enjoy the job. It gets me off the roof. I had a nail bag on for 30 years.” Scott enjoys his television career but would be just as happy wearing the nail bag up on a roof again, then after a day’s slog on the tools meeting the guys in the pub on the way home. “In the years to come I’d like to get back on the tools and maybe buy a little semi and do it up by myself … I’d love to do that again, get dirty, go to the pub on the way home. I used to love that whole culture, that culture of being dirty and having dirty hands and coming in and having a nice shower and a cold beer when you walk in the door. I grew up doing that. I’d like to do that next year but I have other commitments. “I’m very happy to be doing The Block and I’ll do it for as long as it’s available but one day, if something stops, that’s probably what I’ll do during the day. I’ve got all the gear, all the trucks, ready to go.” Still, the showbiz thing has been fun. “I’ve got a very privileged job where people actually come up to me on the street and say ‘hello’. I find that really great. What other job in the world would that happen, where a complete stranger comes up and says, ‘G’day Scottie, howya going?’” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au » Season two of Reno Rumble begins on Monday, March 21 at 7.30pm on Channel Nine and screens on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm. COUNTRY Warm and timeless, the country-style kitchen is a perfect match for Melbourne’s period houses, says John Lorych, director of Smith & Smith, a family company that has created kitchens in the eastern suburbs for 35 years. “The appeal, for a lot of people, is that the kitchen will still look good in 20 years’ time,” says John. “Small bumps and knocks just add to the patina.” How to put the style together \ There are two broad styles: a cottage look, with tongue and groove panelling and cupboards, and a grander look that evokes a large rural homestead. Warehouses and factories allow for fabulous creativity in design. There are no rules, except perhaps to use robust, honest materials in proportions consistent with the building. Home owners are often wary of colour in kitchens, opting for enduring neutral schemes. But interest can be added via textured tiles, subtle stone or marble benchtops – and colour. Our palette these days is more considered, after the shock of the eye-popping mid-century orange and avocado kitchens so popular some years back. Jenefer Macleod of Eat Bathe Live used tiles in blues and rust shades to add interest to this kitchen in a Federation house. Against black accents, concrete and timber, the muted colours were “a way to inject character and worked with the elements of the period.”

obody wants to be left on their lonesome in the kitchen, slaving over dinner with their back to family or friends. Often the solution is to move cooktop and range to an island bench. Rex Hirst, owner and principal designer of Canterbury’s Let’s Talk Kitchens, took this approach when designing his daughter Prue’s kitchen. But the plan was complicated by his dislike of hanging rangehood canopies. “They’re an imposition visually, they’re not terribly strong … and if you’re tall, you’re always bobbing down to see what people are saying,” he says.

In his 2015 HIA Victorian Kitchen & Bathroom award-winning design, Rex used a Schweigen cassette-style silent rangehood over a Siemens flex-induction cooktop. It fits seamlessly into the ceiling, is extremely efficient and looks good. “They’re run by remote control with very good LED lights and they are utterly silent, because the motor is remote,” he says. Rex predicts gas stoves will increasingly give way to induction. “They’re a revolutionary way of cooking – quicker, more hygienic and they don’t project above the benchtop, giving a cleaner look,” he says. If you love to check out recipes on your tablet while cooking, Rex recommends the DuPont Corian benchtop with integrated wireless charging point. Smeg national marketing manager Jim Kalotheos knows many of us are time-poor, so recommends the new Speed Oven. It combines circulating microwave power with traditional convection to vastly reduce cooking time. “It only takes 30 minutes to cook a whole chicken to golden perfection,” he says. ● STEPHEN A. WHAT’S BREWING? Breville has a solution for folks who love a barista-style coffee at home. The Oracle makes it easy, with automatic dosing, grinding and tamping, letting you craft the perfect espresso every time. It also handles milk frothing and temperature, leaving you to focus on the latte art. “I used to think it was just really nice looking, but it’s actually an indication all the other processes have been done properly,” Breville designer and innovation director Richard Hoare says. “You can’t really do latte art without a good espresso pour with a quality, thick crema, and milk that’s been frothed to the right consistency.” ●

Interior designer Antra Lanskis of Taupeology created this moody jewel-box of a bathroom in her Carlton home in the “smudgy” colours she loves, presided over by a 16th century Duchess of Milan. “She glares at the blokes,” Antra says. “I always start a concept with something that takes your breath away.” The floor is tiled with glass mosaics and the walls are treated to a marmorino finish, which is a shimmery render of marble dust and lime. “I needed to pare back any potential sense of over-ostentation and bring down the ‘decadence’ barometer. The walls have a more organic feel about them.” She had a mirror placed along the bath, so the glowing floor, softly lit by LEDs beneath the deep green vanity unit, seems to go on forever. TREND REPORT

INTERNATIONAL This living room by Massimo Interiors in a Malvern house speaks of easygoing glamour. Massimo Speroni says he tends to layer whimsy and tradition. “I have an eye for sophisticated symmetry, combining order with bursts of colour and optimism. Consistent throughout my work is a sense of glamour drawing on classical and contemporary references.” Massimo grew up in Milan and says he has unconsciously acquired the grandeur of his hometown and his work shows the influence of the Italian masters in either subtle or bold strokes. The family room (inset) is relaxed while retaining an element of tailored style and elegance. Andy Warhol’s Marilyn prints were the starting point for the colours. SCANDINAVIAN The Scandinavian style of interior decor is very much at home in Australia. Our love of light, fresh colours and uncluttered design is a unifying element. Emilio Fuscaldo of Nest Architects overcame the visual and practical restrictions of working with small spaces in this Albert Park cottage by practical and visual means, and designed joinery to maximise the use of space. “Everything is light, hardly touching the ground, so it doesn’t feel as if the furniture is filling the room.” Evolution \ Scandinavian ideas have influenced

SPECIAL PROMOTION

bay’s new look New apartments have transformed Sandringham’s bay road

APARTMENT LIVING

A

partment living is on the rise across Melbourne and residents flocking to live in Bay Road, Sandringham, are following this trend with relish. The change has become even more apparent since the area surrounding 228 Bay Road was given a facelift, transforming it from a commercial and industrial zone to the site of stylish apartments perfect for bayside living. The area’s new look is courtesy of a three-stage development known as Sandy Hill. The precinct includes Sandy Hill (stage one), comprising 190 luxury apartments and completed in 2014. Gardenside (stage two), with 141 apartments, is due for completion in July. The Reserve in Sandringham is the third stage of this redevelopment and is being launched this month. The development offers hotel-style living by the beach, with 121 apartments to be built. It’s due for completion next year. These three buildings (Sandy Hill, Gardenside and The Reserve), surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, lush green trees and contemporary apartment buildings, will replace the grey, drab old buildings that once occupied this part of Bay Road. The new look has also led to more people taking up the opportunity for bayside apartment living. Tony Quinert, a director of the Sandy Hill precinct’s developers, Blueprint Projects, says the state government rezoned the land almost 10 years ago, allowing the facelift to go ahead. “The land formed part of about three lots (approximately 24,000 square metres), which were all in a light industrial zone,” Tony says. “The site boundaries included a school, sporting fields and the Bay Road Reserve [Heathland Sanctuary].” The state government recommended rezoning the area. Bayside Council agreed because the industrial area didn’t fit in with its wider surrounds. The change allowed mixed-use developments to go ahead. Developments in Sandringham, and even along Bay Road, were nothing new. But, Tony says, previous developments had been smaller in scale – blocks of just five to 15 apartments. The precinct development has not been without controversy. More than 1000 local residents objected to the plans, which were eventually the subject of a hearing at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. But the new-look Bay Road has since been embraced by locals, attracting them and other people who have previously lived further along the bay to buy in the area. The developments have sold quickly. Buyers are drawn to the opportunity to stay in their local area, and especially to stay close to the bay. Tony says the apartments are popular with owner-occupiers.

In the Gardenside building, almost 70 per cent of apartments have been bought by owner-occupiers lured by the new-look Bay Road. The first two stages of the Sandy Hill precinct featured a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. But there is a strong demand for more three-bedroom apartments at The Reserve. “We’re getting a lot of people who had previously lived in Sandringham and want to stay in the area, people who are downsizing and young people who have grown up in the area and can’t afford to buy a house in Sandringham,” Tony says. “We’re also getting young couples with families who are buying in. It’s the affordability and good value for money compared to St Kilda or Elwood that’s the reason for this, I think. “It’s the convenience factor too, because we have a gym and swimming pool as part of the development.” The swimming pool is an infinity lap pool with a spacious sun deck. There’s also a spa and sauna, along with a gym and a conference room for meetings close to home. The Reserve apartments share the Sandy Hill precinct’s shops, including a cafe, supermarket, bottle shop and medical centre. “I think there’s not a better product out there at the moment,” Tony says. ● MELISSA HEAGNEY melissa.heagney@theweeklyreview.com.au

rnest Fooks was living nearby in Howitt Road in the mid-1960s when his collaborator and fellow architect Michael Feldhagen designed and built this house. Those familiar with Fooks’ work will find it has been paid due homage in this immaculate one-owner house. Showcasing the innovative open-plan approach that liberated houses from the boxed-in style of the 1950s, this house spans time to provide gallantly for a modern family lifestyle. That said, if beige minimalism is your thing, you won’t find it here. While the overall form is simple, fixtures and finishes are bold, bright and multifaceted. Some (such as the carved timber doors to the principal living area) are retro works of art. Clean geometric lines dictate the facade. A full-width balcony under a timber-panelled canopy provides three-dimensional relief. Inside, the foyer has terrazzo-marble floor tiles that make repeat appearances to marvellous effect. Off the foyer is a two-chambered powder room, a laundry, and the rumpus or fourth bedroom with herringbone parquetry floors and a groovy timber bar.

MELBOURNE’S BEST

PROPERTIES

Dining, lounge and family areas flow in sweeping, L-shaped fashion. The dining area has a wall of teak joinery marrying glass-fronted cabinetry, and a buffet under a timber pelmet. A similarly splendid storage unit divides the lounge and family areas. Morning repasts should be stimulating in the kitchen and meals room, with its white and yellow cupboards and busy, tiled splashback. Appliances are original except for the dishwasher, but they’re in great condition. Take the terrazzo staircase up to the second storey. All three bedrooms open to the front balcony, and all celebrate individual colour thanks to designer wallpaper. Two have built-in wardrobes, while the main gets a walk-in. Two bathrooms serve this level; the one next to the main bedroom is effectively an en suite. Back on ground level, a couple of sliding glass doors open the interior to a rear terrace. To balance the front balcony, the terrace is also wide and crowned by a timber ceiling. Terrazzo steps descend to the lawn, where kids can revel in safe and secluded play. ● KAY KEIGHERY property@theweeklyreview.com.au

On a 674-square-metre block, this fantastic time capsule takes you back to the bright, open spaces of ’70s architecture. Climb up the steps to a porch under broad timber beams, and step into a wide entrance hall with timber-panelled walls and greenish-yellow carpet. A sliding bubbled-glass door leads through to the L-shaped living/dining area with textural, wheat-coloured wallpaper and the almost floor-to-ceiling windows so redolent of the period. The kitchen and meals area beyond has a Eurolec oven with five-burner stovetop and a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher. The main bedroom at the front of the house has those huge windows again, as well as a wall of built-in wardrobes and a shower en suite. Two additional bedrooms either side of the main bathroom and laundry have built-in wardrobes. The house has ducted heating and air-conditioning. A patio door from the meals area leads out to the huge backyard with paved section and wraparound lawn, leaving plenty of scope for extending. There’s also a two-car garage. Centre Road’s shops are moments away. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL
