f all the waves of immigration that have O shaped our most multicultural of cities, none has permeated Melbourne’s DNA quite

like the Italians. When you think about the things we love about our city: moody wood-panelled bars, gelati on a balmy night, excellent cafe lattes on just about every street corner, thin-crust pizzas, sitting at the bar at Pellegrini’s with a bowl of spag bol – so many of them we owe to the Italians. The first wave of Italians arrived here postwar, colonising Carlton and enthralling the locals with cheap and cheerful pasta joints and exotic delis. Seven decades later the Italians are still coming and still showing us a thing or two about living la dolce vita. One of this new crop is the delightful Silvia Colloca, aka Mrs Richard Roxburgh, who moved to Australia for love and is now charming us with her new food show on ABC TV and a new cookbook. Read her story inside and enjoy this week’s special edition celebrating our enduring love affair with all things Italian. ●

PETER WILMOTH meets the multi-talented silvia colloca

S

ilvia Colloca met her husband, Australian actor Richard Roxburgh, while making a film that probably doesn’t sit atop their respective acting CVs. The 2004 film was called Van Helsing. Roxburgh played Dracula and Silvia Helsing played one of his three brides. “Oh, hilarious,” she says. “The film was such a fun time for all of us. We worked together for six or seven months and we all got along so famously. “We were having the time of our lives and on top of that we fell in love. When we think of it as a career move we think, ‘Oh well, it’s OK, leave it or take it, doesn’t matter’ but without it we wouldn’t have this family. The director made an appearance in our wedding speech.” We’re in a Sydney cafe and Silvia, 40, is as vivacious and warm as she is in her new ABC television series Silvia’s Italian Table in which she cooks with, and shares stories with, three celebrities each week. She has an accent that is perhaps more Australian than you might expect (even though she’s been living here for eight years) and, with her striking Italian looks mixed with a healthy serve of Aussie self-effacement, Silvia has become Australian television’s newest food superstar. Right now she’s everywhere. Coinciding with the TV show is the release of her new cookbook La Dolce Vita, written to celebrate the Italian way of eating. “I am constantly asked by friends, ‘How can you eat Italian food and not be fat or unhealthy?’ There’s this misconception that Italian food is not good for you … and I say, ‘Guys, you’ve got the wrong picture, I’ve got to help you out here’.” I ask Silvia to explain Australians’ love of the idea of Italy. “I think it’s easy to romanticise because Italy is geographically blessed,” she says. “You venture around those hills and villages, and you’re confronted with incredible history … People are fascinated by a church that’s been there [hundreds] of years, frescoes that have been kept beautiful for time immemorial, and the vibrant artistic culture that produced such masterpieces.” Growing up in Milan, food was a central part of family life. Silvia’s parents were determined to raise their children with a discerning palate. “Everything happens around the kitchen,” Silvia says of her upbringing. “I was always sitting down with mum watching her cook, or with nonna. My brother became a chef. So obviously there’s something that runs in the family. “We’ve all been exposed to a really unassuming and authentic love of food where the love is giving nourishment and it’s nothing to do with the chef’s ego, which is something I struggle with when I go into restaurants and I see a lot of effort put into the food. It feels to me that sometimes that’s taken

PICTURE \ STEVEN SIEWERT It was tough leaving her career in Italy in opera, musical theatre and TV. “When I moved back here permanently in 2009 … I was a bit worried about my own fulfilment,” Silvia says. “I had a good career in Europe. Here I had to start from zero. It wasn’t very easy. I had to get an agent, I had to get people to meet me, to know I was here, because they didn’t really know my work. “What you’ve done internationally doesn’t quite translate until you’ve done Packed to the Rafters, which I did, because my agent said, ‘I think you need to do things like that because you’ll connect with people’.” Silvia has been described as Australia’s answer to Nigella Lawson. She laughs at the temptation people have to make comparisons. “Oh they love doing that, don’t they? It’s great, obviously she’s fabulous. People need to put you in a box. With me they’re already very confused because there’s the cooking thing and the acting and the singing and they’re like, ‘What are you?’ And I say, ‘Sorry that’s your problem, I’m all three and I’m a mother’.

“People are very confused because there's the cooking thing & the acting & the singing … I say, I'm all three & I'm a mother" start a food blog. “My Mum said, ‘Do a food blog, everybody’s got blogs’. Her blog, Silvia’s Cucina, took off in a way she couldn’t have anticipated. “I started having these conversations with people I’d never met who I was so in tune with. We were so like-minded. They started asking for recipes or suggesting recipes. I realised there was a conversation I could have about food with people who were interested in simple Italian home cooking. “We know restaurant Italian food … but there’s also Italian home-cooking. It’s a lot healthier and a lot more varied and it’s exciting for that reason. And very frugal as well. If you’re on a budget it’s a great cuisine.” She pitched a TV show. “I thought, ‘There is no way in the world that this will go through, it’s too good’ … It was an instant ‘yes’. “Australians responded so well to the show because it’s a country of immigrants, whether they’re Italian or Lebanese or wherever. No matter what part of the world they come from they can relate to my story as an immigrant.” » La Dolce Vita by Silvia Colloca (Penguin Random House) $49.99 » Silvia’s Italian Table, ABC1, Thursdays at 8pm.

“I suppose the parallel with Nigella is that we’re both good writers and we both do TV shows and we have dark hair. “Having said that, she’s going a lot more Italian in the cooking. I really enjoy her work. Look, I think a lot of us now have a career in food because of her. She started making it accessible to people.” Silvia says she and Richard take turns minding the children, Raffy, 9 and Miro, six. “Sometimes there are clashes,” she says. “A couple of years ago I was doing a play in Melbourne for a few months. Raffy had just started kindy and Miro was still a baby, 18 months, so we decided Raffy should stay in Sydney [with Richard] so he could go to school and I took the baby to Melbourne because he had to be with his mother. “They’d come and visit. It was a bit strange to have the family like that. But, as much as I missed Raffy and Richard, it was a nice opportunity for me and Miro to have that time alone – he really appreciated that I think. And for Raffy and Richard to have adventures, big boy time.”

S

ilvia says she juggles the singing and the cooking and the kids “because I have a whole lot of energy and I just have to make it work”. She says she's a better person when she can do it all. A couple of years ago she took a break from theatre work. "I’ve got an itch for it now. I kind of have to. If I don’t I get a bit anxious. I think I’m a better friend, a better wife, a better mother and a better daughter if I fulfil all my creative outlets.” She has recently returned from a seven-week stint in an opera in Brisbane. “So the last two months have been about

(COLE BENNETTS)

so far that it’s just to please the chef [so he/ she can hear] ‘Oh that looks amazing’. It’s not appealing to my other senses apart from vision – yes, it looks great, but that’s pretty much it. “I’m not a chef and everybody knows that … I never went to chef school, I’m just Italian and I have a story to tell, so my recipes often are a way to offer a deeper exploration about what it is to be Italian and eat like an Italian.” In Milan Silvia studied teaching, music and acting and she is grateful for the opportunities the city afforded her. “It was only since meeting my Australian husband that going back to Milan and taking trips I was appreciating the landscape. Yeah – Lake Como. It’s nice. I see what the fuss is about.” She lived in Milan until she was 28 and then moved with Richard to London for a few years. Their son Raphael was born in Australia because Richard was directing Romulus My Father (starring Eric Bana) in country Victoria that year. They moved to Australia permanently in 2009. When Raphael was a baby Silvia decided to

opera and performing. Now I’m putting my writer’s hat back on and writing another book. I have deadlines and the show’s coming out and the [new] book’s coming out. It all comes from the same creative spark.” I ask whether it is any easier that she and Richard are both in the creative industries. “I see a lot of my friends and colleagues who are married to people in completely different areas and businesses and they struggle to find that kind of support. “If you have to disappear for three days you just have to. They say that filming will end at 7.30 and it ends at 10.30 at night. That’s fine. Or you have to kiss someone. That’s fine. The fact we’re in the same boat allows us to receive that support, and that understanding. “It’s all up in the air. We never plan because everything changes. We understand each other. It’s a job that can give you so much but can take away so much as well, because there are no sick days, there’s no time off when you’re doing it. You get a lot of time off when you’re unemployed. “You have to keep these things in mind when you’re a family – are we going to make it this year? And how much do we want to work so we can have a good life without sacrificing too much time with the kids?” Silvia’s life has changed so much in three years. “I couldn’t anticipate that things would escalate in the way they did,” she says. “It’s been joyous. It’s not a career I thought I’d ever have. There are better cooks and there are better writers, to be honest. For some reason people seem to be interested in my story. “It’s been my lottery ticket to be able to tell my story in a way that had engaged people in such a profound way.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au OCTOBER 19, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 9

What’s the buzz? Street food is so hot right now and cucina Italiano will always be di moda, so combining the two is sure to make a splash. Following a string of sold-out cooking workshops in Melbourne and at the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School in Sicily, Paola’s first book, Italian Street Food, hits bookshops this month. In the beginning … Paola describes her upbringing, which involved lots of time in mamma’s kitchen, as the best kind of apprenticeship. While her migrant parents instilled in her a passion for food and cooking, they also insisted she follow an academic path, so she studied dentistry. The big break … After withdrawing from MasterChef Australia in 2012 (when her father was admitted into palliative care), Paola realised what she wanted to do. Inspired by Venetian cooking teacher Enrica Rocca, she started a food blog called

Italy on my Mind, featuring recipes, photos and memories of family meals. It quickly gained traction and was shortlisted for Best Food Blog by ITALY magazine within a year. Invitations to teach and write followed. Where to now? Paola divides her time between her home in Fitzroy North and her favourite parts of Italy, such as Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the north-east. “This region and its food is less well-known than other parts – I would like to bring this food to the world and become an ambassador”. The best part about success? Paola’s father died just before she embarked on fulfilling her food dream but he is always on her mind. “I think about how proud he would be, having fled Italy after the war, starting again in a new country, to see his daughter bringing his culture to the world. He’d probably also wonder why he bothered spending all that money putting me through dentistry!” ● ALICE ZASLAVSKY aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

t takes 24 hours to fly from here to Naples – the same amount of time it takes to prove the dough for a classic pizza Napoletana. Some may put this down to coincidence but, considering Melbourne’s recent winning streak in the global pizza stakes, you could be forgiven for wondering if there’s something in our water or if it’s something less tangible – a deep desire to prove ourselves, perhaps. Johnny Di Francesco of 400 Gradi stamped Melbourne’s status as a global pizza force when his margherita took out top honours at the World Pizza Championships (Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza) in Parma, Italy in 2014. Then, early this year, Silvio Serpa of Preston’s Pizzaly was named Australia’s best pizza maker at the same championships. And just last month, Andrea Cozzolino from Zero 95 in Doncaster East took out the coveted Caputo Cup in the birthplace of pizza, Naples, after pitting his margherita against hundreds of the world’s best. There’s no doubt that when it comes to pizza, we punch well above our weight – perhaps not so surprising in a state where Italian is the second most commonly spoken language and where the bonds to Italian food and culture run deep. By the time Johnny Di Francesco started making margheritas at 400 Gradi in Brunswick East in 2008, Melbourne was in the throes of “Il Ritorno” – The Return – to the pizzas of the ’60s and ’70s, which were seemingly delivered fresh off the boat by Italian emigres. Back then, they had been “all Italian and pretty good” recalls Rita Erlich, food writer and former editor of The Age Good Food Guide. “The heavy gloopy stuff came later on”, she says. It was only with the rise of fast food and home deliveries, that our pizza expectations mutated into the kind of cartoonish over-sized crackers you’d see

MELBOURNE’S PIZZA MAKERS ARE TAKING ON THE WORLD, WRITES ALICE ZASLAVSKY in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – American-style, big as the moon, and awash with packet cheese and every topping you could imagine. It seemed like we were doomed to suffer the Supreme injustice forever, “And then the wheel was rediscovered,” says Rita. Ladro, Gertrude Street’s first “serious” restaurant, became the first pizza place to garner a hat in the Good Food Guide, which named it Best New Restaurant in the 2005 edition. “It certainly raised a few eyebrows, but they took pizza to a whole new level,” says John Lethlean, the guide’s editor at the time. “I can still remember how good it was. They didn’t worry about making pizza round. It was all wonky shapes and wood-fired flavour”. The plaudits proved controversial but diners paid no heed to the critics. Soon a new breed of high quality, authentic pizza joints such as Pizza Meine Liebe, Mr Wolf and I Carusi started sprouting all over town, offering simpler toppings, classic flavour combinations and sides of salad. They trained us to expect pizza to be thin-based, slightly chewy and cooked through.

The master: Silvio Serpa of Pizzaly. New hero: Andrea Cozzolino from Zero 95 won the coveted Caputo Cup in Naples for his top margherita.

What we came to know as “proper pizza” turned out to be but one interpretation. As with all Italian food, differences of opinion abound – and each region is fiercely loyal to their own interpretation. Comparing Neapolitan to Roman is like chalk to cheese. Unlike classic Roman-style pizzas that are flat and firm, the Neapolitan pizza is soft and elastic so you have to fold it over itself to eat, or slice it with a knife and fork. For Johnny Di Francesco, this posed a problem. “Customers found the Neapolitan style challenging at first,” he says. “They’d send it back because they didn’t think it was cooked.” Thus began Johnny’s mission to retrain the habits of punters and pizzaiolos, and encourage us to come around to the softer, soupier Pizza Napoletana. sourdough starter from his nonna Rachele and the dough has taken on a life of its own, growing and changing with time and dedication. Across town in Preston, Silvio Serpa is happily getting ready for another night of service at Pizzaly. “He’s 74, he should be at home wearing ugg boots with his feet up,” says his wife and business partner, Anna. “He came out of retirement to make pizza because he just loves it.” It’s no surprise these pizzaiolos are so passionate about what they do. Perhaps with so much distance between our shores and the pebbled beaches of Naples, absence has made the heart grow fonder. Away from the ease of wandering down the street for a bag of Caputo flour, our pizzaiolos are pushing themselves harder, turning the wheels of revolution here and abroad. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

Take one step into this bustling pizzeria and you know you’ve come to the right place for a fine family feed. This place is packed so prepare to sit elbow to elbow, warmed by the glow of the double pizza ovens. For kinfolk not in the mood for dough in the round, there’s plenty of pasta on the menu. But I would strongly recommend at least ordering the Paesana: taleggio and buffalo mozzarella cheese, potato and leek on a classic Neapolitan base. It’s soft, flavourful, carb on cheese on carb … phenomenal. ● ● 450 Hampton Street, Hampton ● lasvolta.com.au

role as Australasian Principal of the Verace Pizza Napoletana association (basically Italian for, “too legit to quit”) he has coached some of Melbourne’s best pizza makers, many of whom I visit while trawling around town on my search for the city’s finest. Although they still get the odd pizza sent back to the kitchen, the pizzaiolo community are spearheading an international pizza revolution. For Melbourne’s newest Neapolitan champion, Andrea Cozzolino, it all comes down to passion. “For me, cooking pizza is not a job. It is a style of life. You do not stand 10, 12 hours a day in front of a pizza oven unless you love it.” But it’s not just his love for the craft that gave him the win over 700 entrants from around the world at this year’s Caputo Cup. Ahead of the contest, the 25-year-old travelled the breadth of Naples, looking for the best fior di latte mozzarella and freshest San Marzano tomatoes (here’s a tip – if your pizza place uses S. Marzano tomatoes, they probably know what they’re doing). “The ingredients for a margherita are simple so you cannot hide behind them but you can also use this to advantage,” says Andrea. “In Australia, we use the same ingredients, we cook it in the traditional style and for some people they think it is too soft, not cooked. But this way you can taste all of the ingredients and if you cook it any further you lose the flavour.” Micheluccio “Mick” Carrafa of Pizzaiolo Micheluccio in Camberwell says making the perfect pizza is not just about sourcing the right ingredients – it’s knowing what to do with them. “You can’t blitz the tomatoes, you have to squeeze them by hand,” he says. “The mozzarella, the dough, it’s all done by hand.” He says authentic Neapolitan pizza relies on a sourdough base. “You have to feed it and look after it – that’s what gives pizza Napoletana its flavour and texture,” he says. Walking into this unassuming strip-mall pizza place, all exposed bricks and tomato-tin-laden shelves, you could be excused for assuming it’s going to be more of the same old suburban hits – “I’ll have a Hawaiian with mushrooms”. But one look at the pizzas and you know this is serious. The margherita does not disappoint – with generous bubbles of fior di latte from local maestro Giorgio at That’s Amore Cheese, on an equally bubbly base. There are “special” pizzas too, with additions such as walnuts and balsamic reflecting the young pizzaiolo’s creative flair. ● ● 904 Doncaster Road, Doncaster East

Another family-friendly favourite that’s also family-owned, this place is made for big groups, with a larger, slightly more private area at the back to fit the entire familia. You can also pre-order metre-long pizzas with the same squishy, wood-fired base. Their walls and pizza oven are adorned with frescoes of Naples, encapsulating their pride for the birthplace of the pizza we know today. I’m a fan of quattro anything, and here it’s the quattro salumi – champagne ham, sopressa salami, pancetta, and pork and fennel sausage – sublime. ●

All exposed bricks, wood and concrete, this Thornbury treasure is built for after-school outings. When I visit, the ratio is about two-to-one kid-to-adult, and the level of juvenile joviality reverberates off the walls. If you have a noisy brood to feed, they’ll fit right in. Their pizza is made to exacting Verace Pizza Napoletana standards and has a satisfying level of smokiness that’s not easy to achieve from only 90 seconds in the wood-fired oven. Plan ahead for the Nutella calzone. ●

This new kid on the block is taking the CBD by storm, combining Neapolitan precision with New York convenience. You can buy pizza by the slice from the front counter (perfect for lunch-break cravings), or commit to the whole wheel. Complete with DJ decks playing old vinyl and an uber-cool beer and wine list, this is old school meets new school in a very Melbourne sort of way, which is only to be expected from David Mackintosh, the man who helped shape laneway hits such as MoVida, Rosa’s Canteen and Lee Ho Fook. ●

Referring to the quality-assuring Denominazione di Origine Controllata, this place prides itself on the best ingredients from Australia and the mother country. The offering goes beyond pizza and pasta into salumi and a cheese-tastic mozzarella degustation, served with such delicacies as white Sardinian anchovies and shaved fennel. The space is bright and fresh, perfect for warmer weather. The calzone (folded pizza) is my pick here. It’s moreish – moist, stuffed full of ricotta, ham, and spinach and, most importantly, flavour! ●

Founded by Melbourne’s self-styled Mr Pizza, Johnny Di Francesco, the original location at Brunswick East is all black, dark wood grain and concrete floors – with buzzwords on the wall (including the big G) and copper wood ovens breathing fire that’s visible from the front door. There’s plenty of al fresco seating here to take advantage of the corner location, so you can sit out the front and shout expressively at passers-by in your best Italian, folded pizza slice in hand. A Melbourne icon to bring visiting guests to for some pizza e bira. ●

This is the one that blew me away with the most flavoursome, impeccably balanced margherita. After having eaten seven other margheritas on the same day, I knew what I was looking for. As we sat beneath the glow of the shiny disco ball, ’90s techno pumping through the speakers, my mouth was treated to tangy San Marzano tomato passata, herbaceous torn basil, stretchy mozzarella di bufala and lashings of olive oil – every element singing along to the doof-doof (of my heart). ●

Ask the wine guy the party season, is prosecco a Q For suitable substitute for champagne? It makes a great substitute – and A one that’s easier on the budget, too. Prosecco’s a fairly neutral-flavoured grape that’s at its floral best when fresh. To capture the purity of its pear, citrus and blossom flavours, most prosecco is made like a still wine before being gassed up in a similar way to a Sodastream. It’s a much simpler – and cheaper – process than champagne, which is reflected in the price. But beware, there are cheap Italian examples that are sweet and one-dimensional (you can add peach puree to these for a delicious Bellini). ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Dal Zotto Pucino Col Fondo 2014 (King Valley) $27; 12%

Range Life Prosecco NV (King Valley) $22; 12%

This can be hard to track down – I’ve had it at Dal Zotto’s cellar door and at Marion in Fitzroy – but it’s worth the search. Cloudy and unfined, col fondo is the equivalent to Coopers beer in the prosecco world. It’s full of fresh green apples, biscuit dough, spice and complexity. This is creamy and energetic, with minerality, lemon and a delightful grip. ●

Here’s a prosecco with a little more complexity than most. Pear, peach and lemon aromas have a moreish zesty note. Its gentle mousse leads to ripe stonefruit and citrus flavours that are given life by a line of energetic, refreshing mineral-laced acidity. ● Enjoy with \ Sushi

Enjoy with \ Freshly-shucked oysters

Imported direct by Dan Murphy’s, this ticks all the prosecco boxes – and at a good price. Floral apples, pears and green melon aromas are given a lively kick by zesty lemon, while its luscious, creamy mousse – a real highlight – gives way to a neat balance of rich orchard fruits and zippy grapefruit. ● Enjoy with \ Yum cha

BARGAIN BUY Enoteca AD Vino Bianco Frizzante NV (Veneto, Italy) $12; 11% With its low alcohol and breezy character this is just perfect for sunny afternoons with friends. There’s the lightest tingle of bubbles, before sweet apple, pear and pithy grapefruit flavours wash over the tongue. Here’s a wine that’s not trying to hard – it’s just cool. ● Enjoy with \ Parma ham

o matter the language, countries and cities are often referred to in the feminine; the mother country, your mother tongue. It makes sense then, that Bar Idda – “Her Bar” – should be such a homage to Sicily and all that she has given Italian cuisine. Upstairs, surrounded by glowing light and wood panelling, our lace tablecloth is swiftly hidden under a plethora of plates. Sicilian food was “designed to share” before it was cool. Dictated by a bountiful coastline and rocky terrain, the cuisine is seafood-heavy and made for warmer weather. Deep-fried school prawns are sprinkled with pistachio (Sicily’s nut of choice), chargrilled tuna steak “u fucularu” is served with a grape-laden broth, accenting the fish’s meatiness. We eat the ricotta gnochetti in silence (it’s that good); creamy, al dente, with shaved sprouts, broccoli and chilli. Luckily it comes with a spoon, because I’m about ready to lick the bowl. Sicily isn’t huge on meat, so there are plenty of veggies on the menu and it’s all so fresh and light you’ll want one of everything – from the eggplanty capunata to the lemony finocchio (fennel). Leave some space, take the cannolo. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

EATING \ BURRATA may look like an innocent mozzarella ball, but cut into it and you’ll be rewarded with oozy stracciatella – a mixture of cheesy strips and fresh cream. Traditionally eaten within 24 hours, drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, I add rocket and crostini for a substantial share plate. ●

an album, Bonnie is instead making her theatrical debut alongside Mark Dickinson in the revival of 1970s musical Godspell Godspell. “I’m always trying to do different things,” Bonnie says. “I thought I’d give it a shot. It’s a pretty wild experience learning the script. I’ve done a bit of acting before, but doing it for a stage musical is a whole other thing.” Drawing on the New Testament, Godspell was a big hit in Melbourne 40 years ago in a production starring Colleen Hewett (who also appears in the new version). Bonnie’s approach to preparing for her first stage role has been thoroughly 21st-century, however. “All I could do at the start was look up as much as I could on YouTube. It’s cool looking at how the songs have changed and evolved.” She isn’t worried that the Bible connection might put some people off. “It’s rock, you know. It’s going to be fun. It’s not so innocent and it’s not throwing religion in your face. The show is cheeky, innocent and playful.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au

Irish singer Glen Hansard first rose to fame as one of the band in The Commitments and went on to build a career as frontman for indie group The Frames. His breakthrough moment was as a broken-hearted singer-songwriter in hit film Once, which scooped him an Academy Award for Best Original Song. He’s touring his second solo LP of soulful, folky rock with a nine-piece band.

Set in the 1960s, when a separatist group was trying to overthrow the government, 887 makes striking use of film, projected images, puppetry and miniature models. It’s the director-performer’s first time on a Melbourne stage. ■ Arts Centre, October 19-22, $25-$129, festival.melbourne (SUPPLIED)

Set in Jazz Age Hollywood (and loaded with all the romance and nostalgia that suggests), it looks set to be a companion piece to his much-feted Midnight In Paris. He plays Bobby, son of a Bronx jeweller, who goes to Hollywood in search of stardom and instead falls for glamorous secretary Vonnie (Kristen Stewart). ■ Opens October 20, rated M, 97 minutes, cafesocietymovie.com

After seeing an ad for Australia on TV in Italy, Gaetana “Nina” Nicoletti came to Melbourne with her husband and three children in 1969. Now retired from her job at St Vincent’s hospital, the Templestowe Lower resident has received multiple council and state awards for her community contributions such as teaching cooking for the Salvos. She began broadcasting in Italian on local radio station 3WBC 16 years ago and continues to bring news, chat and nostalgic tunes to the airwaves every Sunday morning.

I love Templestowe Lower

O V E R H E A R D … 3pm, Tuesday @ outside Vermont South library

Where do you go for a special family meal? La Porchetta Doncaster is really convenient for families and they have great pizza and spaghetti marinara. My family also love Templestowe Hotel; they have a lot of Italian food and everything there is good. I like trying a little of all the things from the smorgasbord like meats, pastas and desserts. Where do you go to catch up with friends? My husband and I don’t get out as much as we

used to because he has Parkinson’s, but we go to the Veneto Club in Bulleen once a month with our friends for the special three-course lunch and dance. Sometimes we go to the Sunday night bistro or Saturday night dinner dance too – you don’t have to be a member to go. For a quick coffee? To my friend’s place, she lives nearby and I like going there instead of to a cafe. Where do you go to buy a gift? We’re simple people! I like to shop at Target at The Pines. To enjoy nature? Birrarung Park off Templestowe Road is really beautiful. When the children were young we often had family picnics there. To buy a new outfit? The reality Having ascertained my motivation for learning Italian (a summer on the Cinque Terre that is still a dream) and confirmed my self-assessment that I’m a beginner, Giulia meets me in a cafe. Over coffee, she takes me through some basic greetings and pronunciation exercises, using gestures as visual hints. By the end of the hour I’m able to introduce myself and make basic small talk as well as read and pronounce a list of Italian vocabulary.

The promise Originally from Italy’s Abruzzo region, Giulia Campomizzi has been bringing Italian lessons to Melbourne learners for four years. “I can travel to wherever is convenient to the student – a cafe, library or their house,” she says. Giulia draws on her acting skills and communication studies to supplement a workbook, creating lessons that are effective, interesting and fun for all ages and abilities.

Who’s behind the counter? Enza Sirianni learned to cook traditional Italian meals while growing up in Italy with her Genovese dad and Sicilian mum, honing her skills further when she opened a restaurant in Milan “many years ago”. Back in Melbourne, she and her husband Sam took over Frank’s Deli in about 2008, renaming it and expanding the range of imported goods and ready-made meals. What’s in store? Just about everything for the making of Italian meals is here, including dried and fresh pasta; preserved meats and antipasti; mozzarella and pecorino cheeses; and an assortment of coffee and its various accoutrements. Lasagne, dips and pasta sauces made fresh by Enza are also available for those who don’t have time to make their own, and she has also started making a range of FODMAP and gluten-free meals. Who’s buying? There’s a cafe in-store, so along with people shopping for Italian ingredients, mums and kids come in for milkshakes, tradies visit to pick up hearty ciabatta rolls and home-made hamburgers for lunch, and retirees come

Eltham College

Beginnings are exciting and challenging. They are best shared with others who share the same ethos and respect for one another. Whitefriars educates boys knowing that the family as a whole is our greatest asset. Whitefriars College is a Catholic school in the Carmelite tradition. Those who have gone before us have left heritage and wisdom. The college motto is a beautiful example of such wisdom; In the Care of a Loving Mother (Almae In Fide Parentis) sets a tone of strength through humility and steadfastness. It forms a view that boys can be gentlemen and yet influence and make their mark in the world. At Whitefriars, boys achieve strong success, not only academically, but in the many necessary forms that lead to a meaningful life. Every boy who comes to Whitefriars should feel he can be his own person with his own personality. Our boys understand that each person has the right to learn, grow and be fostered in all aspects of pedagogy, which includes a diverse and broad curriculum. When you are looking for a school that will best suit your son and your family, I encourage you to share our story. ● JOHN FINN \ Principal

How does one define success in education? Universities and other post-secondary providers are reviewing their selection criteria to address the requirements of an ever-changing world. Earlier this year the Harvard Graduate School of Education released a report calling for a change in selection criteria. In part it includes “concrete recommendations to reshape the college admissions process and promote greater ethical engagement among aspiring students, reduce excessive achievement pressure, and level the playing field for economically disadvantaged students”. In Victoria, La Trobe University’s Aspire program selects students who “must be able to demonstrate the impact of [their] volunteer contributions to the community”. Eltham College is responding to these needs with its commitment to growing the heart and mind of each child. At the same time, the Foundation for Young Australians has recently articulated the skills that our young people will need to be successful. Highlighted are abilities that require them to be exceptionally creative, innovative, critical thinkers and problem solvers who live their lives with confidence, resilience and agency. Our desire at Eltham is to provide an

Catholic Ladies’ College is an inclusive learning community that offers a holistic educational experience where each young woman is challenged to thrive and flourish in contemporary society. The college’s Catholic culture is grounded in the tradition and heritage of the Sisters of Charity and our values of justice, compassion, love and hope are ever-present in daily life. Our beautiful and spacious eight-hectare campus provides a safe and supportive environment and offers students a variety of exceptional learning experiences. Our learning community celebrates diversity and our student well-being programs are designed to support the needs of the contemporary adolescent and to develop life-long skills. We pride ourselves on knowing and valuing each student and working closely in partnership with parents in educating their daughters. Our learning programs provide breadth and depth, offering students choice and opportunities to study non-traditional subjects for girls. With a strong culture of

Yarra Valley Grammar celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and we have a great story to tell. From humble beginnings the school has flourished to become a leading school in Melbourne’s east. The 50th anniversary has given us the opportunity to honour the past and recognise the contributions of so many, and to celebrate the present and the great place the school has become. I foresee that Yarra Valley Grammar will contribute to the community by continuing to provide great educational opportunities well into the future. Yarra has been a great school for its students and their families and has a strong sense of community that we call the Yarra Spirit. Our students are encouraged to contribute to the wider community to ensure a well-balanced education. We are undertaking an ambitious rebuilding and refurbishment program to continue to provide world-class facilities for our students, from early learning to year 12. The most important components of a school, however, are great teachers and great teaching, and the new facilities provide the environment for this to happen. The school can look forward to the next 50 years with great optimism and I feel very privileged to play a part in that journey. ● DR MARK MERRY RRY \ Principal

into a small space. But if you’re carting seven people there are few more comfortable ways to do it. The rearmost seating for passengers six and seven is comfortable and generous enough for adults and there’s even room behind for luggage, although getting to it is not exactly dignified. This is a city SUV with low-profile tyres and hard suspension. It’s quick away from the lights and has enough power to dive into holes in the traffic. At the same time the steering is light and supple and the view of the road is commanding. I love the huge centre screen, as big as an iPad and clearly based on one. It has three separate menu screens (toggle between them by swiping) and they control almost everything in the car, from the engine start/stop to the seat heaters – which are among the best in the business. But I’m not convinced this is worth the extra over the base XC90. ●

love Volvo’s lane-keeping technology. Say you have your head down trying to find a radio station and the car starts wandering across the road. As you drift towards the white line the lane-keeper tugs gently on the wheel to keep you within your own lane, while also reminding you that a radio program is not worth panel damage. You can have fun letting the car skip along the line by itself, and should it start following an errant white line overriding it is as easy as steering where you want to go. I’m a big fan of the XC90 and the R-Design Polestar is the sportiest number with low-profile tyres and a unique grille. The ride is sharp but it handles like a hot hatch and feels light and agile. The two-litre turbo-diesel is extremely economical as well as having remarkable punch. It’s very quick and nicely responsive. Okay, the engine is a tad noisier than most but the 71-litre tank goes a long way. ●

urniture kingpin Franco Cozzo was just 19 when he packed his bags and left Sicily, saying to his father, “I’m going to Australia, c’est la vie.” After 32 days on a boat he arrived in Melbourne on Australia Day 1956. “It was a beautiful day in summer and I fell in love from the first day. I thought, ‘This is a country with a big future’.” Franco started out selling white goods door to door. “I didn’t speak English, only Italian. I didn’t even know where I was, the company just picked me up and took me home each day.” It was this determination that led him to create his own company. “Anything I do, I do with passion, with love and with my heart,” he says. “In sales you have to sell the truth. If you tell lies, you forget them.” Now 81, Franco lives in leafy Templestowe with four of his 10 children. The opulent home is welcoming, with a stunning indoor pool. A mixture of modern and baroque furniture fills the space but it’s clear the real heart and soul of this home is the family who inhabit it. “My family is everything. Life has been so good in Australia, beautiful, and it will be until I leave.” ● JANUARY JONES jjones@theweeklyreview.com.au

I’d always wanted to have a car like that. I was about 45 and just finished the Footscray building. I thought I’ve got to make a present for Franco Cozzo. Driving it reminds me of when I was a younger man.

My sister passed away when she was 12 and I will always remember her when I see the ring. When my mother left it to me she said, “This is the ring of your sister, wear it and you will have her with you always”.

TEMPLESTOWE \ 9 BRONTE RISE

W

arner Court is a road with genuine “street presence”. It is wide, long and flanked by nature strips that are almost as wide as the street. In places, nature strips and lawns merge to form green borders that are wider than the bitumen, making for a truly open feel. The 22 houses along Warner Court are well set back. All have neat front gardens and manicured nature strips. The house at No.11, at the top of the court, has one of the front lawns that flow into the nature strip – a stretch of green touching the edge of the road. With the footpath to the front door concealed by low hedges and shrubbery, the house capitalises on its pastoral setting. It has a striking presence in a green wedge. Internally this presence is matched by a bright persona created by the generous use of glass, high tray ceilings and a layout that thoughtfully combines zoned and open spaces. In the entry is a two-storey void framed by a huge picture window above the porch and topped by a gabled section that acts as a giant fanlight. An upstairs gallery straddles the void like a viewing platform that captures outside views through the picture window and fanlight. It also straddles the stairwell and is common space shared by the upstairs bedrooms. The juxtaposition of void, gallery and stairwell would make this a busy entry if the house were any smaller. But at this address, this zone – with light filtering through the dramatic upper level – is just the lead-in to the style elements in a house take has about 600 square metres of space. A frameless bay window in the meals area adjoining the family room makes a similar, light-fantastic statement, letting in uncluttered views of the trees and trimmed hedges in the backyard. These full-height windows, dressed with soft pelmets and lush drapes, make up the external walls of the family and meals area and the rumpus wing. Together they wrap around two sides of the swimming pool, making a picturesque connection between outdoors and in. The pool is the main recent addition to the house; the vendor says: “There was no need to make more changes.” There is, however, provision for a full-sized tennis court in the back garden of this 4014-square-metre allotment. With four bedrooms upstairs and a self-contained flat downstairs, the house is too big for the two people who now occupy it, the vendor says. Extended families would find it a pretty nifty place to call home. The main bedroom comes with a huge retreat, walk-in wardrobe, en suite and private balcony with rural views. All the bedrooms have attached bathrooms and built-in wardrobes. The kitchen, with granite benchtops, a walk-in pantry and Miele appliances, is well equipped for big-time home catering. The rumpus room has a Coonara wood-combustion heater for additional warmth. And it has a plumbed wet bar. This property is in a part of Donvale that is quite close to Mitcham and Ringwood, bringing it within easy reach of the government schools, shopping centres and train stations in those two suburbs. ● SIEW-CHING GOH property@theweeklyreview.com

Space for family members to spread out and a warm ambience commend this property. Owned by one family for 30 years and peacefully situated in the bowl of a small court, the two-storey brick house starts with a foyer on the split-level ground floor. Steps to the left lead up to the parents’ wing comprising a study or fourth bedroom and the main bedroom with walk-in wardrobe, en suite and access to the front balcony. Take the steps down to the lounge, which has big windows with a view across the front garden. The rumpus or fully equipped theatre room at the rear of this level is perfect for family gatherings and all-in movie sessions. A covered terrace reached through the kitchen and meals area bodes well for entertaining, while a gazebo with a built-in barbecue on the top level of the backyard affords another spot for fresh-air enjoyment. Sloping timber-panelled ceilings, exposed brick walls and an open fireplace boost the earthy draw. ● KAY KEIGHERY

Architect Harry Pels built this house in 1967, joyfully parking himself on the edge of the Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve for many hearty hikes. The two-storey house makes the most of the beautiful outlook with a big living room opening to a decked balcony from which the garden appears to roll down through towering gum trees to a sparkling lake. There’s a discreet fence with a park gate. The floor plan works well, with three ground-floor bedrooms with wardrobes plus a bedroom, study and lounge on the lower ground floor. The white laminate kitchen is small but well-organised and has its original St George oven and cooktop and a cork-tiled meals area. The main bedroom opens to the balcony. The renovated bathroom has a circular shower and glass basin. Downstairs, the beamed, carpeted lounge opens to the covered barbecue patio. There are many seriously cool features, notably the parquet-floored hall and its lightbox centrepiece. A double carport is supplemented by caravan parking. ● ALISON BARCLAY

BLACKBURN \ 1 OTTAWA AVENUE It looks lavishly Edwardian but this house is just 15 years old. Bedrooms are ample and the enormous living area is light, airy and fuss-free with french doors to a luxuriant, north-facing garden and a self-cleaning pool. Its owner-builders certainly understand the soul of Blackburn, however. Their weatherboard house was carefully inserted among native trees with the black-barked gum in the driveway allowed to divide the double carport into his’n’hers, as befits this quiet street a minute’s walk from Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. The two-storey house mixes heritage-style bevelled cornices and jarrah flooring with the breezy floor plan and excellent storage that families love. The living and dining area, 12.2 metres long, has surround-sound speakers and five pairs of doors to the decked return verandah. The white kitchen has LG, Siemens and Fisher & Paykel appliances and a backyard view. Next door, the blue and white bathroom has an enamel tub and glass shower. Bedrooms are two up, two down. The ground-floor main has a walk-in wardrobe and tiled en suite with shower, the second a walk-in wardrobe. Two attic-style bedrooms have dormer windows and wardrobes and share a landing study and a bathroom. The house has security, ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, three water tanks and a laundry. ● ALISON BARCLAY

NUNAWADING \ 9 EFRON STREET This property has so many outstanding features it’s challenging to choose just one. Built in the 1950s, the house has been made over with a keen contemporary eye, while the backyard is now an entertainers’ haven completed by a state-of-the-art pool. Renovations focused on maximising internal light, with internal walls cut away and glazing extended in most spaces. Hardwood floors have been custom-stained and white paintwork replaced coloured walls as a neutral backdrop for artworks. The house is on the high side of the street and is fronted by terraced gardens. Slate steps rise to a choice of entrance doors and a big balcony with aspects over the street. The front lounge sets the scene for the rest of the interior. Further back, a central hub blends the kitchen, dining and living areas. The kitchen zone has pizzazz, with quality appliances including a 900-millimetre oven and an integrated Liebherr fridge and freezers. A marble ledge attached to the island bench makes for a stylish breakfast bar. French doors in the adjoining meals area open to the terrace. With covered and open-air sections, this deep and paved zone faces artificial lawn with built-in seating. Central steps rise to the north-facing, glass-fenced pool enclosure, where the pool and spa abut a covered deck. ● KAY KEIGHERY

High offers often come early during the selling process, however owners will often hold out in the hope of a better deal coming along. Sellers can be lulled into a false sense of security making the assumption that a good offer in the early stages of selling can mean an even better offer will come once more people have viewed their property. Unfortunately, holding out for a better price generally leads to price discounts and lower eventual sale price.

It is crucial to understand that ‘heart buyers’ are highly motivated. They recognise the value your property can provide them and they move quickly to secure their dream home. Therefore, when such offers arise, it is important not to automatically dismiss the offer on the hope that an even better one will come along. Remember, buyers that are motivated enough to offer a good price from the very beginning are rare, yet there are plenty more buyers who are happy to sit around and wait for the price to drop.

To understand why good offers often come early during the selling process, it’s important to place yourself in the position of the buyer and consider the journey that they have been on. Reasonable or above market offers often come from a ‘heart buyer’. A ‘heart buyer’ will fall into one of two categories – either they have been searching for their dream property for months on end or they have stumbled across your property and have impulsively decided they need it. In both situations, the buyer has fallen in love with your property and their emotions have paved the way for providing a reasonable offer.

Give careful consideration before accepting or rejecting early offers. This is when having a trusted agent can come in handy – they will be able to provide advice on whether they think this is the highest the buyer is willing to pay and whether the offer is comparative to the price that similar properties have sold for in your area.
