WATCH

T

his week as I sit bleary eyed thanks to OSDS (Olympics Sleep Deprivation Syndrome) I’ve been reflecting on why we find watching competitive sport so compelling. Of course, there’s the thrill of seeing who’ll win and marvelling at the finest physical specimens of humankind. But more than that, I reckon elite sport holds up a mirror to society, reflecting the best and worst of us. On the plus side, we’re reminded of just what can be achieved with single-minded effort and dedication. On the minus side, when the stakes are so high, the temptation to bend or break the rules can be irresistible. Hence the drug scandal surrounding the Russian Olympics team and, in our own backyard, the Essendon supplements saga. More than three years since news broke that Essendon players had been administered banned supplements, we still don’t really know what happened and, as Bomber Thompson reveals this week, the saga still haunts those involved. ●

AUGUST 10, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 5

PETER WILMOTH MEETS BOMBER THOMPSON I’m driving through South Melbourne with Mark (Bomber) Thompson & he’s reflecting on some of the amazing names he’s coached over 10 years at Geelong & one at Essendon. As he tells his stories, there’s an obvious love for the football environment that even the pain of the Essendon supplements saga hasn’t killed.

T

he stories reinforce what he’s told me earlier – that you walk out of a footy club and leave so much behind. “You miss the social side of football, you miss people,” he says. “You miss it. And you can’t go back. People don’t just walk into football clubs. You’ve got to be part of it. It’s gone. Your workplace has gone, your social life has gone … Everyone who leaves footy [also] leaves their core friendship group. “I knew it was going to come because I’ve seen it. I’ve seen nearly every player who’s left the game go through some time of …” He pauses. “I’m not completely lost. I’m actually training myself to not want it. The natural instinct is to go back to what you know. Just trying to find other things to do that you really value doing.” What a saga Bomber Thompson’s life has been for the past four years. From his role as assistant coach to James Hird at Essendon, Bomber took over as coach for a year (in 2014) when Hird was suspended. Bomber was fined $30,000 by the AFL for his role in the supplements saga and now finds himself in a strange limbo, hurt by the scandal, devastated for the banned players, and he says he has become “a bit insular”. And even though he’s written a book – which was cathartic – he still can’t find a passion to replace football. “There have been periods of time when I wouldn’t go out,” he says. “I didn’t want people thinking there’s …” He pauses. “The carnage from a people point of view has been massive. It’s not just the players; it’s staff, it’s [former club chairman] David Evans, it’s AFL people.” Bomber, 52, says he has had trouble sleeping. “I [would] wake up and jump on the internet to see what is in the news. It was every day.” Now he’s travelling around Australia talking to football clubs and groups of coaches, and he has dipped into property development. “The building side I thought was going to come into my life hasn’t given me that fulfilment yet. I’m still looking for that one thing. I’m not lost but I haven’t found anything either.” Say what you like about Bomber – different cat, quirky, a little bit out there – today he’s relaxed and generous with his thoughts, candid about the “perfect storm” he found himself in, and able – fortunately

Before the carnage: Mark Thompson and James Hird. May 2011. (THE AGE \ MAL FAIRCLOUGH)

– to let fly with some huge, loud laughs. After all, he was never one to take himself or the job too seriously. “I sort of just do what I want,” he says. “Because you’re an AFL coach, do you have to behave in a certain way? The bloke who coached me [Kevin Sheedy] was quirky too. I like the fact that he did what he wanted to do. We get too serious about who we have to be.” The man universally known as Bomber – only his mother calls him Mark – earned his nickname after Bomba, the Jungle Boy books for his agility in climbing trees while growing up in Airport West (his nickname later acquired the “er”). Now he has charted his journey from apprentice electrician to one of Kevin Sheedy’s “Baby Bombers”, to captaining Essendon for four years, playing in three premierships (1984, ’85 and ’93) and coaching Geelong for 10 seasons, breaking a 44-year drought with a flag in 2007 and steering them to another in 2009. And then, of course, there’s his role in the Essendon supplements saga, a scandal that prompted him to write the book. “I wanted to tell the truth. I think

the truth’s been lost. What’s taken over is winning and losing and saving face. “Four years on, we still haven’t got to the bottom of it. We can’t tell the players what we had, even though we’ve made every attempt to try and find out what happened. “It’s the perfect storm. I wish people would put their personal agendas away and just take the blame and responsibility. I can, I can do it, I don’t see why we can’t do it for the players’ sake.” Was he ever seen as the bad guy? “Yeah, to a point. My name’s there. I’ve been charged by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute.” He wasn’t happy about the incongruity of only some of those involved in the saga being charged, and other inconsistencies. “I don’t see how people I worked with at Essendon, like Dean Robinson for example, was never charged. I don’t see how if I’d left I probably wouldn’t have been charged but if I stayed I was charged. They charged me, but they let me work with the team again. That’s totally contrasting, isn’t it? You’re partly responsible but we’ll let you back near the players.” Taking over the coaching role from James Hird in 2014 – when the team was banned from taking part in the finals – was still a good year, he says. “When I took the job on, the whole focus was on helping the players, which meant I had to stop thinking about all the other stuff and not talk about it. We hardly spoke about it the whole year.” He became a different type of coach. “I opened up. I was private, I had my ways [but] I wanted to put some enjoyment into their footy and even for the fans, to open up our club. The fans had been so good and loyal. I opened up training. I made players talk to [the fans] every session. “It was enlightening. It was refreshing for me to be a little bit more honest and open and tell it the way it is.” Bomber’s memories of building that great premiership-winning Geelong team are precious. “We got them as children, in football speak, trained them up and nurtured them and created these animals who could play the best footy in a spirit and style that was with humility and class. They were just good citizens playing unbelievably good football. Very proud of them.”

He ran out of steam at Geelong after 10 years and two flags. “I’d gone out with a goal and a philosophy, and by god it worked,” he says. “We were the greatest team of all for a period of time. I couldn’t reset my goals and say, ‘I want to win four or five’. And I was tired.” He deals with the supplements scandal eloquently in the book. I ask what perception Essendon has been left with. “I think a poorly run club. A fractured club. And a club that is probably a little bit arrogant. People maybe think we did it on purpose and tried to get away with something. I think that’s what people think. I think a large percentage of them still think that we cheated,” Bomber says. “They must, because the players have been suspended for 12 months.” Does he think they cheated? “I don’t think we ever did anything illegal. I don’t think (sports scientist) Stephen Dank is stupid enough. I don’t think it was ever anyone’s intention. I don’t think they’ve got any proof to say that it was ordered, made, delivered, paid for, given. “It’s bizarre that we still don’t know what the players were injected with. I find it absolutely bizarre that we haven’t tried hard enough. People could have actually spoken to each other. Someone should have been a facilitator. Somehow should have got us together and tried to find the facts out rather than just see who was legally wrong and responsible. That’s what the players wanted. That’s all they want still.”

H

e writes that nobody has been treated worse in footy than the 34 players banned from playing over their involvement. I ask what those players have told him about the nightmare they’ve endured. “It wakes them up at night. It’s taken away their confidence. It’s kept them out of public life because of embarrassment. I don’t think they’re worried what went in their body, but they’re worried that they’ve been linked to this whole sporting disaster.” Has it damaged the players as young men? “It’s had varying effects on [different] individuals. If [former captain] Jobe [Watson] doesn’t come back and play, he’s going to finish his time in football with four disastrous years. It’s almost half of his career. And he hasn’t had the chance to be as good as he’s capable of being and play in that champion team. We’ve taken that away from him,” Bomber says. “I wouldn’t think any less of them if they went after damages. If you think about what you do for a living and you can’t be what you’re capable of being, it’s restrictive.” Should Jobe keep his Brownlow? “Well I think if he’s guilty he probably shouldn’t.

BEEN LOST”

I would still want more proof before they did it. You can’t be guilty and win an award in that year that you are guilty. I don’t think you can, and I don’t think Jobe would want it anyway.” I ask Bomber how the saga has affected him. “It’s varied; 2013 was a really tough year. To try and work in a football club and coach a team … it was hard. It was confronting, it was unsupportive. It was survival.” How has James Hird coped? “He’s gone from football hero to someone people take a different view of. I think he’s really shied away from being in public because his self-worth is probably at an all-time low. He’s probably been treated as badly as the players and he’s been targeted. “I just worry because he’s so used to being vibrant, being up and about, being respected, being loved, and you get used to those feelings in your life. And I don’t think there are too many people who have bothered to ring him or help him.” How are things between the two of them now? “We’re OK. I’ve been trying to ring him, haven’t been able to get him, he’s not taking too many phone calls. He’s probably in a big bunker. Can’t come out.” Are they still mates? “I hope so.” Bomber has regrets, and the way he dealt with Gary Ablett jnr’s year of staying or leaving Geelong is one of them. Bomber confronted Gary, who told him it was none of his business. “And it wasn’t. He was right to say that. I don’t think coaches really should get involved in negotiating contracts. It was such a distraction for us.” How are they now? “It’s OK. It’s never been great; he’s a very private person. I see him occasionally and we talk. I think if I had my time over again I’d probably change the way I did things. I should have stayed right out of it.” Bomber writes about his three children, now in their 20s, that “I missed part of your lives but you have turned out to be wonderful people”. “I think a lot of men have a lot of regrets about that,” he says. “We are busy people. I tried when I was living at home but then when I separated … it was just harder. You don’t see the little things every day that you would see, even if you are in a busy job.” Would he coach again? “I said no but I can’t say what’s going to happen in the future.” I drop Bomber off near his bayside home. As he walks across the busy road, it strikes me that after everything he – and so many at Essendon – have been through, it’s a relief to hear the man laugh. ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

Ask the wine guy I drink my fair share of Q chardonnay and pinot from Tasmania, but what other varieties does the island produce?

A

When the first vineyards in Tasmania were planted, cabernet sauvignon and its Bordeaux buddies (cabernet franc, merlot and petit verdot) and riesling were the vines winemakers chose to plant. It was a similar story in the Yarra Valley in the 1960s. The Bordeaux varietals grow well on the east coast, where weather systems blow down from the mainland, while a spine of alluvial soils through the island is perfect for riesling, shiraz and pinot gris. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Domaine A Petit A 2010 (Tasmania) $45; 14%

Grey Sands Pinot Gris 2013 (Tasmania) $45; 15.3%

The grapes for this come from a single, biodynamically farmed vineyard before they are fermented in Austrian oak. Floral, pretty aromas of bath salts, citrus, blossom and pretty flowers are delightfully perfumed. There’s a nice mid-palate weight to the citrus, quince and stonefruit flavours that works well with the wine’s racy acid and chalky grip. ●

A 60/35/4/1 blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot. The current release is six years old and it’s just a pup. It smells and tastes of blackcurrant wine gums, mulberry, spice, pencil shavings (from oak maturation) and herbs. Structurally, this is loaded with tannins that have softened with time, and with vibrant acid keeping things fresh. ●

The team at Grey Sands tends to hold on to the wines a little before release. This is bursting with tropical fruit salad and citrus aromas. It’s bold and textural in the mouth. This is at the ripe end of the pinot gris spectrum – the high alcohol is a giveaway. In the mouth there’s more tropical fruit characters, plus spice and a perfume character that adds to the wine’s length. ●

THE VERDICT

f you follow the yellow brick road of Swan Street to this Emerald City, you won’t have to look too far to see the wizard … she’s on the pass. Even on a Monday night, when most head chefs treat themselves to a lie down and a chardy, Nicky Riemer’s strawberry blonde afro bounces above the mahogany partition between kitchen and dining room. Mondays are particularly rewarding, offering special “locals’ night” banquets that change monthly, giving Nicky an opportunity to teach the young chefs in her kitchen new techniques and skills. A braised bell pepper with burrata steals my heart with its simplicity – a dish she laboured over as an apprentice at Stephanie’s in the 1990s. Vegetables are especially heroic here. If there was a “side dish of the year” award, her shaved savoy cabbage salad (the best nine bucks you’ll ever spend) would snaffle it – though the roasted Angelica Farm carrots could give it a run for its money. The food is “European provincial”, according to co-owner Adam Cash; relaxed, seasonal and impeccably balanced, according to me. These are the kind of dishes you could happily eat every day, and wish you could click your heels together to re-create at home. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

olin Lane is stepping out of his comfort zone. Best known as a comedian (he was the tall one in long-running double act Lano and Woodley), Colin is adjusting to life as a dramatic actor in Hannie Rayson’s new play Extinction. The hardest part about theatre, he says, is the different relationship with the audience. “It does scare me just a little bit, the fourth wall concept,” he says. “The shtick that Frank and I had didn’t have a fourth wall so when you made a mistake, you said to the audience, ‘I made a mistake!’. “So much of comedy is about what the audience is doing. You’re getting laughs so you have a clear idea of

COLIN LANE & NGAIRE DAWN FAIR

what the audience is thinking. You adjust. In drama, you have to more or less do it the same every night or you freak out the other actors. And the stagehands.”

Colin says he was drawn to the production by the quality of the people involved. A script from Hannie Rayson certainly helped, as did the fact that legendary filmmaker Nadia Tass

was in the director’s chair. Extinction sees Colin’s character Harry Jewell, a mining CEO, become involved in the environmental sector at a low point in his life. “His wife’s told him he’s an idiot, his daughter has said he’s destroying her life and he’s run over a tiger quoll. He wants to prove to himself and the people around him that he’s not a total failure.” When he takes the aforementioned quoll to a rescue shelter, he finds himself offering to donate millions to save the quolls from extinction. He’s surprised when environmentalists aren’t keen on taking money from one of the world’s biggest polluters. “It’s a thought-provoking show,” Colin says, when I push him for a sales pitch. “Look, the TV is always going to be there, OK? Nobody gets to their death bed and says, ‘Gee, I wish I’d watched more TV’. So get out of your house, go to the Arts Centre, have a chardonnay, or a chai latte, I don’t care – come and see some theatre and you’ll have a very entertaining night.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au » Extinction, Arts Centre Melbourne, August 9-13, $40-$55 artscentremelbourne.com.au

STAYING IN

This mind-bending thriller from Sydney writer Nathan Besser, soon to be a Hollywood film, toys with ideas of identity, trust and memory. Our (sort of) hero David collapses from a brain disease, shortly after discovering his wife was briefly a sex worker. While recuperating, he falls in with conman Ben, who entangles him in a complex and perilous scheme of identity theft. ● WIN \ A copy of Man in the Corner thanks to Andrew’s Books Ivanhoe

Baz Luhrmann’s excursion to telly has proved to be Netflix’s most expensive production yet. Hardly surprising, given the director’s tendency towards excess. Here, he revels in the colour and extravagance of New York circa 1977, as hedonistic disco gives way to hip hop. Music has always been important to Baz, but it’s never been as vital as it is to these kids from the Bronx – in need of liberation, or a weapon. ● ONLINE \ Watch the trailer

This British indie band make a break for the mainstream, leaving behind complex rock for urgent and rather sexy dance pop. From the first verse of slinky opener Big Cat, it’s clear the group are in a sleazy, playful mood. And there’s no getting around the title of their recent single Get My Bang Bang.. But Boy King manages to enjoy the trappings of shameless, sex-crazed and Prince-flavoured pop with an ironic grin. ●

Iron Man director Jon Favreau transforms the classic Disney cartoon into an action thriller with this live-action remake. The cast is incredible – Bill Murray was born to be loveable rogue Baloo – and the CGI is impressive, but there’s a disorientating compromise between old and new. For the perfect gift? For my kids, Buckets and Spades has some fantastic clothes from Europe and the variety is spectacular. It’s a bit different to your normal stuff. For a big night out? I play with old teammates from my days at Elwood City Soccer Club. It’s a sport I love and grew up playing. For some time to yourself? I enjoy my daily morning walks down to Brighton Beach. The promise Hi, my name is Claire, and I am an op-shopping addict. Opportunity shops raise money for charity by selling secondhand goods donated by members of the public. Whether it’s clothes, furniture, books, toys or bric-a-brac, op shops are full of bargains and the element of surprise – you never know what gems you might find. I’ve spent many years and dollars rummaging through op shops far and wide. But now I’m about to jump over the counter to volunteer at possibly the best op shop in Melbourne. As well as its work with homeless people, non-profit organisation Sacred Heart Mission has nine opportunity shops including one in South Melbourne.

SHOP G AT T H E O P

As we trawl through, shop co-ordinator Michelle suggests prices for things after comparing them with eBay listings and examining brands, quality and condition. I scribble prices on tags and move the stock onto the floor. A beautiful guitar lasts about one minute before an eager shopper snaps it up. By 11am the shop is bustling with bargain hunters. I can’t believe the pace and energy of the work – it’s really busy! The pain factor versus the pay-off It’s a bit like a job that you don’t get paid for but the feel-good factor of helping out a worthy cause outweighs any drawbacks. Who should do it? Anyone with a bit of time looking for a constructive and social activity.

The reality I arrive as the shop opens at 10am and I’m greeted by a group of friendly volunteers. Donations start arriving thick and fast: boxes and boxes of trash and treasure. I sort through goods: framed pictures, kitchenware, books, brand-new kids’ clothes, hardly worn Manolo Blahnik shoes and gorgeous wooden toys.

The bill? Like all volunteering, it only costs your time and energy.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? If I could find the time, absolutely. ●

“Create the perfect haven at home away from a busy world”

Who’s behind the counter? When Mary Ma moved with her husband and son to Sandringham from Beijing late last year, No Place Like Home was a shop she loved to visit. “There’s a sense in Australia and in China that everyone is so busy and under a lot of pressure, but this shop is the opposite of that. It feels relaxed, it encourages you to slow down,” she says. Mary knows about high-pressure jobs. The telecommunications engineer owns her own company in China. So when the opportunity came along three months ago to buy the shop she loved, it seemed perfect. “It’s not like a job to me, it’s really enjoyable. When people come into our shop I want them to feel the nice atmosphere, to relax and slow down.” What’s in store? A range of affordable and mostly Australian products, including cushions, throws and furniture from Madras Link and Asian Tide, kitchenware from Laguiole, luxuries from Twig Skin + Body, handbags and toys. Who’s buying? Sandringham locals, especially women aged between 40 and 60 who are looking for gifts or just to brighten their homes. ● CLAIRE SLATTERY

I

t was in Bali while sitting by the pool with a vodka tonic and a lime (50 cents for a good-sized bag of limes) that I read Melbourne was so cold that day you might as well be sitting in your fridge. It was a great line and a sobering reminder of why we had come to Bali for a two-week escape. The challenge of Bali these days is trying to do everything you want to do in limited time, so you need to organise carefully, especially booking into the hot restaurants. Or, on the other hand, just arrive and do nothing. Both plans work. ● PETER WILMOTH pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

As anyone who’s visited Bali recently knows, the island has become a food mecca. Our “discovery” on this trip was this superb place in Canggu, about 30 minutes’ drive from Seminyak, which puts a modern spin on Japanese food. Just a couple of hundred metres from Finn’s Beach Club, One Eyed Jack is a cool, stylish diner with an enticing menu including crisp soft-shell crab sliders, pork belly, tuna/salmon tacos, miso black cod and quail egg. We also did what any self-respecting Australian traveller is doing and visited Frank Camorra’s newest Movida in Seminyak (great), Sarong (satisfying as ever), Saigon Street Bali (endlessly good food in a vibey atmosphere), and Mamasan (never fails to turn on a great night). ●

Canggu, a half-hour drive from Seminyak, is Bali’s new hot spot and there are some fun things to do apart from surfing the several breaks along this stretch – much easier surf for beginners to intermediate than the breaks on the Bukit, such as Bingin and Balangan, which are awesome for more experienced surfers. I rented one of the many quality Malibu boards on offer for $10. It’s crowded but fun. Uluwatu, where the world’s best surfers tackle awesome breaks, is an easy day trip from Seminyak. Watch in awe from the warungs that spill down the cliffside. Grab a beanbag on the sand and have a drink or dinner at Finn’s Beach Club, Canggu, while you watch the surfers. It’s cool and laid-back and a DJ pumps out some chilled tunes as you enjoy pre-dinner

SCHOOL’S OUT WITH NICOLE HARDM AN

About Nicole

Nicole Hardman is a prep teacher at Firbank Grammar – Sandringham Campus and is also an alumna of Firbank. She is now teaching some of her former classmates’ children, guiding them through their early years. special promotion

“the first year of school is such an important one ”

(MICHAEL RAYNER)

– nicole hardman

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY OF FIRBANK AS A STUDENT? At the end of year 10, I travelled to Germany. It had only been unified for a couple of years when we visited. We stayed with two families, one in the West and one in the East. Our school was the first school to visit the old East Germany after the wall came down, so we had reporters interviewing us from the local newspaper. Frau Wagner is still teaching German at Firbank Senior School and was one of my favourite teachers.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DAY OF TEACHING LIKE?

I’m always excited but also a little nervous when starting at a new school but it was like coming full circle returning to Firbank in 2014. It felt like home – many parts of the school were familiar but I could also see many wonderful additional learning spaces at the three campuses. Some of the teachers who taught me are still at the school. At Sandringham Campus, the teachers and parents are so kind and welcoming.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF WORKING AT FIRBANK?

The warm, inclusive community feel as you walk through the doors is hard to match.

Students at Sandringham Campus have positive self-images, are socially well-adjusted, and enjoy being challenged to learn and develop together. I enjoy watching the boys and girls play together in the playground. There is no such thing as boy or girl games – they all participate equally in football, soccer, skipping and tiggy.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF WORKING WITH STUDENTS IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF SCHOOL?

Beginning school can be very overwhelming. At Firbank Sandringham, we begin the transition in Term 3 when the ELC 4 students visit the prep classrooms and the playground. They form friendships with the prep students, as they will be together in the playground the following year. The ELC adjoins our playground and we share many facilities. Prep students are very concerned about getting everything “right” so we take a lot of time to encourage them to “have a go” at everything and teach students that making mistakes is part of the learning journey.

ARE YOUNGER STUDENTS MORE TECH SAVVY NOWADAYS?

There has been a huge change with science and technology since I began teaching. At Firbank we have a dedicated S.T.E.A.M.

(Science Technology Engineering Arts Multi-media) Centre to cater specifically for science and technology. In addition, each classroom has a touch screen interactive whiteboard, desktop computers and 1:1 iPads. We have an eLearning coach who supports our technology use. This year the preps have used computational thinking to code Bee-Bots and used iPads to create 3D images that were printed on our 3D printer.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I love being an early years teacher. Each day is different and you never know what’s going to happen, even though you think you have it all planned out. The first year of school is such an important one, you are developing the whole child – social, emotional and academic. Mostly it’s the feeling of body strength and integrity that’s so reassuring. This is a relaxing car in the country and, even if the ride gets a little firm across second-class surfaces and B roads, the distance tends to fall away. In town the X4 is the right size, nicely compact but with surprisingly good interior space that’s usable and practical. At one stage we had three across the back seat and it remained manageable and easy to get to the belts. The cargo room is excellent and it’s easy to park. The interior is beautifully finished and the surfaces are warm and tactile. The audio is pretty good. The electronics remain a mystery; pay attention when they are explained. ●

anything could be narrower than the Range Rover Evoque’s rear view but this X4 takes the cake. Make sure to set your side mirrors up properly because the blind spots are more blind than most. BMW is challenging the Evoque with the X4, and the Evoque HSE is a very good thing indeed and $13,000 cheaper. So is the BMW better? Well the diesel motor is a beauty and the cabin and fittings are typically BMW – luxurious certainly, but ordered and businesslike. The electronic menus are also typically BMW; designed by engineers. If you don’t think like an engineer then you must learn to do so. The handling is brilliant, the cost being ride quality that gets quite sharp. If your heart’s set on a BMW this is a really good one, but look at the top Evoque before signing the papers. ●

LIVING SPACES TRINITY LANE

The selling point Spacious, purpose-built and architect-designed independent retirement apartments in a highly sought-after area close to shops, parks, services and hospitals.

special promotion

(SUPPLIED)

T

rinity Lane is a newly released independent retirement living project just a three-minute walk from the Darebin Creek parklands, which is at the end of the leafy street. The two-storey development comprises 23 spacious one and two-bedroom apartments with communal facilities, set in immaculately landscaped surrounds close to Ivanhoe’s shops, services, parks and hospitals. The site was formerly St Bernadette’s parish tennis courts, but with diminished use the parish decided to give it a new purpose. Trinity Lane is the latest project to be developed by Villa Maria Catholic Homes, which has a long-standing reputation for developing high-quality retirement living. Recent projects include Athelstan in Camberwell, Barnsbury in Deepdene and St Joseph’s Mews in Hawthorn. Villa Maria Catholic Homes property development manager Simon Sloan says Trinity Lane has been designed for beauty, practicality and absolute comfort. “Trinity Lane offers the opportunity to join a new boutique community in Ivanhoe with its tree-lined streets and an abundance of pastimes on offer that are never more than a 10-minute bus ride from your front door. “Villa Maria Catholic Homes has a long and proud reputation for delivering high-quality, independent living retirement communities. At Trinity Lane, our aim is to maximise residents’ independence and opportunities for socialising.”

LIVING AREA

Stoll Long Architects’ design for Trinity Lane appears as a collection of contemporary brick-and-render townhouses set in gardens designed for privacy and outlooks by John Patrick Landscape Architects. The five one-bedroom and 18 two-bedroom apartments have spacious floorplans sized from 69 to 133 square metres and integrated outdoor living within private outdoor spaces that range from nine to 220 square metres. Prices start at $540,000 for a 69-square-metre, one-bedroom apartment with a nine-square-metre balcony and rise to $1.11 million for a 133-square-metre, two-bedroom apartment with a study,

fireplace and 216-square-metre terrace and courtyard. Under the retirement village structure, residents enter lease arrangements with exit fees based on years of residence at a percentage of the original lease cost. At Trinity Lane, deferred management fees and maintenance fund fees will be capped with rates available on application. All have one or two parking spaces and storage in the secure basement. Construction is expected to start in September with completion in February 2018. ● LIZ McLACHLAN lmclachlan@theweeklyreview.com.au

Location, location Trinity Lane is a two-minute drive from Ivanhoe’s cafes, restaurants and shops. On foot it’s 12 minutes to the Darebin Creek trail and 15 minutes to Ivanhoe. The five largest two-bedroom apartments (127-133 square metres) also have a study/ flexi-room and a Jetmaster fireplace in the living area. All but two have an island or peninsula bench in the kitchen and most have a walk-in or walk-through wardrobe off the main bedroom. All two-bedroom apartments have two bathrooms. ●

hen Ben Shewry and his wife, Natalia, were ready to invest in their first home seven years ago, they headed to Ocean Grove. Since then, the owner and chef at internationally renowned restaurant Attica has commuted for more than three hours a day. But the long drive is worth it for Ben, who loves living in the small coastal community. “I love being close to nature, going surfing and raising our three children in a less busy environment,” he says. “I love hearing the sound of the ocean at night. We lived in Melbourne for six years before we bought our home but I feel more comfortable in a smaller place. If I’m painting the fence people stop and chat and everyone says hello when they pass you in the street. That makes a place feel like home.” The kitchen is the hub of the fourbedroom house. The sleep-out is a play room and there’s a lounge filled with natural light. The outdoor dining area has a touch of home for New Zealand-born Ben – a silver fern motif is painted on the fence. “I’ve done the work myself. I’m the son of a builder,” he says. “I prefer to have things in my home that will last a lifetime. I’d love to collect mid-century Danish furniture next. The design is simple, beautiful and practical and 70 years later it still looks amazing. I’d love to create food that would be relevant in 70 years’ time.” ● SARAH MARINOS smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au

SURFBOARD

My dad, Rob Shewry, is an artist. He painted this in 2010 and gave it to me. It’s two pukeko birds in a swamp below his property. With my friend, Ted Lombardo, who is a chocolatier, I created a dish for Attica as a tribute called the Pukeko’s Egg. I don’t go to a gallery and buy art. I have to be somewhere, meet someone, there’s a connection, and then I buy something.

I have a long, classic, single-fin longboard, a Brian Anderson model that I bought in California. I’ve surfed since I was a kid. It’s a form of escape. I can be grumpy or stressed, go for a surf and feel like a million dollars afterwards.

HAND-MADE KNIVES I’ve collected these over 10 years or so. One of them is one of only 21 in the world, made by a famous Japanese bladesmith called Takamura. It was given to me five years ago in Japan. Later I was in a famous high-end knife shop in New York and saw one in a cabinet. The owner said it wasn’t for sale and I told her I already had one. She said that wasn’t possible and I told her I really did have that knife. I like the practicality of knives. They are art you can use.

BASKETBALL COURT

FUN HO! ANTIQUE TOY COLLECTION These toys were made in Inglewood, the town in New Zealand where I went to school. They were made from the late 1920s to the late 1970s and are hard to find now. I used to travel around the North Island looking for them in antique shops, going to swap meets and answering ads in newspapers. I like their simplicity.

I was a fan of basketball when I was younger. I played in teams at high school but hadn’t had anything to do with it for years because I was working an absolute tonne at Attica. Then my son, Kobe, started playing and made a team with his schoolmates – the Red Dragons. I coached them for four years. We built this basketball court five years ago. Kobe plays for the Melbourne Tigers’ first under-14 team and I’m amazed by his focus and determination. AUGUST 10, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 25

THE RECORD BY CORNONERO special promotion

Arkee Creative director Paula Bowen says The Record’s palette of contemporary materials is designed to sit well with the hybrid of the heritage base and the contemporary apartments. Sarah Morrison, director of sales agent Evoke Property, says all buyers to date are owner-occupiers seeking a boutique development in a desirable location. “Buyers love the fact that the market is so close and the CBD is in extremely close proximity yet South Melbourne still has a village feel. “Downsizers are buying the larger apartments and city professionals love the idea of working in the city but being able to call The Record home.” There are 32 to 34 apartments on levels one to six in The Record with four layouts able to combine into two three-bedroom apartments. Internal areas range from 47 to 122 square metres and all apartments have at least one balcony – outdoor areas range from 6.5 to 27.3 square metres. All apartments will have secure groundlevel parking. Construction is underway with completion anticipated in mid-2017. ● LIZ McLACHLAN lmclachlan@theweeklyreview.com.au

T

he Record at 240 Dorcas Street offers a slice of local history in an elite South Melbourne location complemented by the luxury of architect-designed contemporary apartments. Former South Melbourne newspaper The Record (1868-1976) was published at the site and its 1882 heritage-listed building is integrated within the design to accommodate the residents’ entrance, a street-level cafe and a first-level two-bedroom apartment. The newly released development is in the Emerald Hill estate, one of Melbourne’s oldest suburban areas with immaculately preserved Victorian streetscapes, and is a minute’s walk from Clarendon Street and perfectly located between the CBD and the beach. Views from The Record take in its South Melbourne surrounds, including the spires of the South Melbourne Town Hall directly south across Dorcas Street. Prices range from $399,000 to $1.6 million. The design showcases the original building and draws on its newsprint tradition in an elegant monochromatic facade recessed and set back above and around The Record building. Most apartments have a north-east aspect and interior designers Arkee Creative have optimised natural light and outlooks.

Arkee Creative’s focus on creating liveable spaces includes light and dark interior schemes using contemporary materials with matt oak floorboards in the open-plan living areas, plush carpet for bedrooms, porcelain bathroom tiling, stone benchtops and 2pac and oak laminate joinery. The Record’s floorplans offer a range of layouts with highlights including walk-in or walk-through wardrobes for many main bedrooms and a second terrace off the main bedroom for some apartments. Air-conditioning units have been positioned to allow more terrace space.●

An elegant bulkhead defines the kitchen zones in the open plan living areas. Many kitchens have peninsula or island benches and some have an alcove for the European laundry. The reconstituted stone benchtops are grey or white with a marbled porcelain splashback. The joinery is in grey or white 2pac and oak laminate in keeping with the matt oak flooring. Miele appliances include a stainless-steel gas cooktop, rangehood, oven and semi-integrated dishwasher and there’s an integrated Fisher & Paykel fridge/freezer. Detailing includes open display shelving facing living areas. ●

Arkee Creative director Paula Bowen says the bathroom design features an embossed tile evocative of the pressed-metal ceilings that were typical of buildings of The Record’s era. “This is one of the ways in which we have taken heritage elements and used them in a contemporary context.” Like the kitchen, the bathrooms have a marbled porcelain splashback. There’s ample storage in the ceiling-height mirrored vanity cabinet. The walk-in shower has a frameless glass screen and a shower rail. WE LOVE IT

I

t’s a good sign when a house is as handsome from the side and back as it is from the front, especially when it’s on a corner site. Period houses that have been extended up and out don’t always look beautifully cohesive; when they do, they’re an asset to the streetscape. Achieving this also suggests this facade is not just a front, so to speak, but gives a hint that similar quality can be expected inside. First impressions of this 1920s Californian bungalow certainly encourage high expectations. It exudes confidence as a long-term home, where families grow up and put down roots in a safe, friendly neighbourhood. The soundness and charm of the original structure on a corner block, which is walking distance to the beach, railway station, shops and schools, gave the previous owners the assurance to give it a substantial extension and upgrade 12 years ago. Its exterior displays consistent style. The red brickwork and terracotta-tile roofing match. The front gable, with white battens against a smoky render, is repeated in the upper-floor extension on the west side facing Pellew Street. Pretty English-style, double-hung sash windows with white-painted frames and diamond leadlight are replicated all around. There’s also unity in the garden. Landscaping last year by Eckersley Garden Architecture, of a low-maintenance front garden under a mature liquidambar, echoes the rear-garden design. A pool, pergola, built-in barbecue and bluestone/ red-brick paving were added five years ago, and a car space and shed were positioned off the side street. Inside, the diamond-leadlight windows are as evocative as outside. Other period character comes courtesy of timber floors, wide window sills, a fireplace with timber mantel, and reproduction light switches and stained-glass panes. However, this house is no quaint relic. Its neutral palette, high ceilings, nicely proportioned rooms and white plantation shutters make it light and inviting. The living and meals area at the back is open to the white kitchen, which has a granite island bench, stainless-steel workbenches, Ilve stove and walk-in pantry. Two pairs of french doors lead to a rear deck, where the scene is set for summertime dining under a verandah that offers shade from the north sun. The verandah echoes the classic Californian bungalow front porch of charcoal-painted render and timber posts atop brick pillars. Back inside, the formal living (with bay window) and dining rooms are at the front of the house, sharing and divided by a central two-sided fireplace. On one side of the wide central hall and staircase is a bedroom and bathroom, and on the other is a study (or spare bedroom) with a sandblasted brick fireplace. Under the stairs is storage for 27 dozen wine bottles. Timber stairs with a carpet runner lead to three bedrooms with diamond-leadlight windows. The main bedroom has a standing-room-only balcony, a built-in storage bench seat and an en suite. The walk-in wardrobe is in a separate room to one side. There’s a bathroom with a bath and two children’s bedrooms, each of which has a cut-down door to enter a shared play room. Nestled into the angled rooflines, it feels like a hideaway attic straight out of a storybook. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Sun-lovers will be pleased to know that, even on a winter’s afternoon, the three north-facing living areas of this expansive, luxuriously renovated Californian bungalow are bright and warm. Walls of windows and french doors bring in plenty of light and open to a wraparound deck with timber fretwork that unites the living areas. Engineered European oak floors reflect downlights. The central living area has a pale stone kitchen with a wide island bench and breakfast bar. It has sleek cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. There’s a separate laundry. Double doors lead to a formal lounge off the entrance hall. The split-level family room to the rear has a large fireplace. There’s a bathroom for freshening up after a dip in the heated pool out back. Three downstairs bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and one has an en suite. Two more upstairs share a bathroom with a freestanding tub in front of a beautiful stained-glass window. The property has a lock-up shed, a tandem garage and is close to Allnutt Park. ● STEPHEN A. Glass doors in all rooms except the wet areas of this house ensure great natural light throughout. A front courtyard and backyard deck provide outdoor options for different times of day. The front gate and door are painted bright blue, and there are three Juliet balconies (one for each bedroom) on the second storey of the brick facade. Ground level comprises a laundry, powder room and open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas. With pale timber floors and access to the courtyard and deck, the family hub exudes an airy, beachy vibe. The kitchen has Miele appliances, white stone benchtops and self-close cabinetry. Paving, built-in seating and tropical landscaping make the courtyard inviting but the deck looks just the spot for summer-evening socialising. Along with their balconies, all bedrooms have mirrored, built-in wardrobes and soft carpet. The main bedroom has a compact en suite with shower, and there’s a separate toilet next to the main bathroom. ● KAY KEIGHERY

This little cottage in Albert Park represents a significant opportunity to live in or rent out. Just around the corner from one of Melbourne’s prettiest and most treasured streetscapes, St Vincent Place, the classic weatherboard beauty has a white picket fence and a paved front yard. Inside, there are bedrooms on either side of the central hall. They have built-in wardrobes and outlooks to the street. One also has access to attic storage. The hall ends at a living room with built-in bookcase and heater. Sliding glass doors reveal a sunroom that leads to the bathroom. At the back of the house is the kitchen, which has a Miele dishwasher and ample storage. An aqua-green tile splashback adds a punch of colour to an otherwise neutral palette. Out the back, there’s a courtyard with a rear right-of-way. This house is full of potential as is but the property also comes with recently approved plans and permits for a three-bedroom, triple-storey house designed by Brayshaw Architects. ● FRANCESCA CARTER

Held in one family for 37 years, this expansive house on 817 square metres was designed by John Malina of Fredman Malina Architecture. A vast cathedral roof soars over the gleaming parquetry floors of split-level formal living and dining areas. Double doors connect to a large granite kitchen with dual wall-mounted ovens and a spacious meals area. There is a separate laundry and bathroom. Two more sets of double doors lead to a rumpus room and then a library. Each of these spaces has patio doors to the palm-tree-lined backyard with solar-heated pool and spa. There’s also a study downstairs with a custom-built curved desk. A timber staircase to the second storey shows off the spectacular ceiling. The main bedroom has an en suite and a walk-in wardrobe with skylight. The three kids’ bedrooms are at the other end of the floor. They have built-in wardrobes and share a blue-tiled bathroom and a separate shower with another skylight. There’s a palm-lined courtyard at the front, and a double garage. The house is close to Caulfield Park. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

32 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ AUGUST 10, 2016

BENTLEIGH \ 11 WILSON STREET This house is easily the best dwelling in its street, and possibly Bentleigh’s best new build in recent years. While the French provincial exterior offers a stately street presence, it’s the attention to detail inside that sets the house apart from its contemporaries. From the European oak floorboards to the zoned air-conditioning and everything in between, this elegant house is a showcase for all things custom-built, designer-style and top-of-the-range. Starting with the basics, it’s a three-bedroom, four-bathroom house with an open-plan living/kitchen/dining area – so far, so standard. Then add to that floor plan a sound-proof theatre room, walk-in pantry, second upstairs living area, fitted study, cedar-lined sauna and gym. But perhaps it’s the extras that make this house so desirable. There are too many to list here but they include a wine fridge, Sonos sound system, custom-built wrought-iron doors, gates and staircase, home security, double-glazed windows, hydronic heating and imported timber-veneer surfaces. Outside, the yard is dominated by a swanky pool and spa. It’s gas- and solar-heated and kept topped up by a 22,000-litre underground water tank, which also services a fully automated irrigation system. A paved area and undercover deck provide plenty of options for outdoor entertaining. ● JAN FISHER
