driving a little runabout so nondescript I have trouble recognising it in a car park, roaring around in a growling, gleaming red muscle car was quite a change of pace. But it wasn’t just my wheels that changed. Every time I got into that look-at-me car, it was as if I became a different person. I felt bolder, more self-assured – and a good 10 years younger. It got me thinking about how our personalities tend to shape-shift depending on what we’re doing, who we’re with and, it seems, what we’re driving. It’s a phenomenon our cover star, Mick Malthouse, says has given us all the wrong impression about him. After decades of being known as the unsmiling, hard man of the AFL, he insists it was all just a mask he had to put on to do his job. Underneath, he says, he’s really a softie. Learn more about the man behind the mask in our interview inside. ●

T

he misconceptions about Michael Malthouse are many. He’s abrupt … abrasive … demanding … But the neatly dressed man who arrives at The Weekly Review studio for our photo shoot and interview is anything but. Michael (as he prefers to be called) has just walked from his home near the MCG to Southbank – walking is his preferred mode of transport – and he apologises for being a few minutes late. Friendly and relaxed, his face breaks into a warm smile when he chats about his family – especially the six grandchildren who obviously have “Pa” wrapped around their tiny fingers. “I guess most people saw me at the office and my office was a coach’s box or a press conference. It was an intense job because most of the time a football environment is very intense,” he says. “In that environment I always go to another level. I cross that line and become someone else – I know that. Players call it white line fever. People see you like that and judge you like that. I am very focused when I’m on the job. I wasn’t a great player, but I played 12 years of football because I had that intensity. I coached for 30 years because people trusted me with their teams and players and because I still had that intensity. “But when I am home I’m just dad or pa and I’m scared stiff of my daughter, Dani, and her daughter, Holly – and she’s only six! She’s telling me what to do right now and has been since she was four!” he says, laughing. Last school holidays, he arranged a series of get-togethers for his four children and his grandchildren – aged from one to seven. There’s no doubt family comes first for the coaching stalwart and his wife of 40-plus years, Nanette. “We took the oldest two granddaughters for brunch and to the matinee of The Sound of Music recently. They knew all the songs and they were singing along in the theatre. They were right into it – oh God,” he laughs, shaking his head. “I am loving this stage of my life. I am not here to work eight days a week now. I want to travel more and enjoy my time with my kids and their kids. Nanette and I are going to Europe on a river cruise later in the year because it was one thing she always wanted to do when I retired. We’re both looking forward to that.” Michael’s coaching career spanned three decades, during which he coached more VFL and AFL games than anyone else. But retirement came under controversial circumstances in May last year when he was called into the office of Carlton chief executive Steven Triggs and told his contract was being terminated. His severance came after weeks of speculation that left his wife in tears and his children feeling hurt and frustrated. “My family feels a little cheated in some respects because my career finished the way it did,” he says frankly. “They know how much time and effort you put in – your heart and soul – and to have it finish like that, to be told you’re a failure in the media, of course that affected them. “But I’ve tried to look at the entirety of my

career rather than just May last year. And you get reminders of that from time to time. I went to the football a few weeks ago and a Collingwood fan came up to me and said, ‘Thanks for 2010 – it was one of the most magical moments of my life’. And to think you were part of that, well, that’s fantastic. “And recently, when someone commented that I must be disappointed with the way things ended, a young girl in her 20s who overheard the conversation said, ‘You can’t take the legend away from what you’ve done’. “I did the best job I possibly could but, to be honest, I have failed dismally to arrive at any point in time that has satisfied me. I never got to the top of the mountain. I was satisfied the journey had finished for me as a player, but as a coach I never sat and looked over the meadow and thought, now I can smell the roses. But I don’t think I would have ever felt I’d achieved what I wanted to achieve, even if I’d won a premiership every year.”

H

e has strong views on Australia’s ageist attitudes. A fit and energetic figure in his early 60s, he believes as a youth-obsessed society we fail to appreciate life experience and skills accrued over decades. “I’ve never felt old but we have a shocking habit of thinking people are old and, as a consequence, they are dismissed,” he says. “I see it now first-hand. You run in to a younger person somewhere and talk and they’re looking over your shoulder. You walk off – I’ve done that – and they don’t even notice you are missing. We have the mindset that if you are old, you are past it. That’s just crazy.”

Dream makers: Leigh Russell, Michael Malthouse, Ben Dixon & Darren Burgess, cast of The Recruit. (MARTIN PHILBEY)

for a couple of days. “For me the up-side was dealing with young blokes who are not in any of the major football systems at all and there was an opportunity to do something for those on the cusp.” As filming took him across the country, testing the mettle of the footballing hopefuls, he relished time on the road – particularly the episodes that took him to more remote parts of the country. “I loved Tasmania. I love the isolation and its bare nature – I should be a tourism ambassador for Tassie because I’ve pumped it up to everyone for the past 20 years.”

“At home I’m just Dad or Pa. I’m scared stiff of my granddaughter – & she’s only six!” But he remains pragmatic, always looking forward. His experience and professionalism ensured that, post-Carlton, the opportunities soon came knocking. He has dabbled in media presenting with Channel Seven and 3AW, set up a fledgling leadership business, Keen Edge, with Collingwood’s former sports science director David Buttifant, and he is a key figure in the second series of FOX8’s The Recruit, which goes to air later this month. The reality football show follows 15 as-yet-undiscovered players from around the country as they live and play together to win the life-changing prize of a guaranteed place on an AFL list. Michael is the head coach who motivates and mentors the young contestants. Each week he also has to decide who will pack their bags and go home. It’s not always easy. “It’s brutal,” he says. “For any coach, the end of the year when you have to cut players from the list is the worst time and it never gets any easier. You’re the dream maker and the dream breaker. But I reminded myself that these young blokes were being given a chance and they all know there can only be one winner.” He says when the call came “out of the blue” to be part of the show he mulled it over

It was easy for him to empathise with the contestants who live and breathe football and are eager for their lucky break. He grew up in the working class Ballarat suburb of Wendouree in a family that had plenty of love but not many material comforts.

A

t eight he discovered footy and joined Wendouree West and then North Ballarat clubs. In 1972 he joined St Kilda, playing 53 games before signing with Richmond mid-way through the 1976 season. He played six finals for the Tigers before hanging up his boots in 1983. The following year he was appointed senior coach of Footscray – the beginning of an impressive coaching career that took him to Perth with the West Coast Eagles in 1990, to Collingwood in 2000 and to Carlton in 2013. Along the way he took the Eagles to the finals every season, winning Premierships in 1992 and 1994, and in 2010 he led Collingwood to win the flag. When asked what it takes to be a top performer in footy, he doesn’t hesitate. “I believe strongly in three things. Firstly, ambition or want – are players ambitious enough to succeed? Secondly I look at

determination; it’s OK to have a goal but are you determined enough to pursue it? And then there’s resilience because you will get knocked on your backside more often than not. Are you ready to fail and to get up again?” He says he has always been brutally honest to players and their families about the high price of playing football. “I always promised parents that their boys would leave better than when they walked in to a club because we rob those kids of their lives,” he says bluntly. “We demand excellence – dietary and physical excellence and mental excellence and their time. I’ve seen players come in at 18 and they don’t know much about life or the game. By 20 or 21 they are dead-set smart arses! They know everything. At 26 or 27 they marry and at 28 or 29 they have children. They’ve got their house, their life is in order and by 30 they retire and wonder what they are going to do because not everyone will end up working for Channel Seven or coaching. “That is the fearful time for me because I’ve seen so many people with their lifestyle, and suddenly the private school fees can’t be paid, there are pressures on the marriage, they’re not part of a football club anymore and I see players who can’t come to grips with normal, standard life – not all of them, but far too many.” It’s family that has helped keep Michael’s feet firmly on the ground. He credits Nanette with many of his achievements and says his children were also extremely supportive of his football career and the demands it placed on their lives. “They were always very patient and it helped that they also loved the game.” He recalls the shock of learning, on reading his daughter Christi’s book, Malthouse: A Football Life, that she had been bullied because of her father’s job and high public profile. “She hid that from me. They absorbed a lot of stress and kept it to themselves so I could continue to do what I do,” he says quietly. This year, he has in turn supported Nanette as she has undergone treatment for breast cancer. “Nanette was diagnosed in February and waited to start radiation until our youngest son, Troy, married in April this year. She’s finished now and she’s very positive and making good progress. We’re looking forward to that cruise in Europe together,” he says. There are many more family times planned as he takes a break after filming on The Recruit. There’s a family holiday this summer – with 16 of the Malthouse clan – and he’s looking forward to catching up on some reading. He’s a history buff, currently ensconced in the Roman Empire, but he also loves books on Egyptology, the first and second World Wars and the Middle Ages. So, finally, after so many years in the spotlight, is there anything we don’t know about Michael Malthouse? He laughs loudly: “Oh God. Is there really anything people don’t know? Probably not. I’ve been pretty open … I learnt that if you can’t say anything good about someone then don’t say anything at all. I don’t like bagging people … and I don’t play golf …” ● smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au » The Recruit begins on July 20 on FOX8 JULY 20, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 7

Ask the wine guy I travel a lot for work and often slip Q a nice bottle in my bag, but always feel let down by hotel glasses. Do you have any tips?

A

Oh, snap! I’ve been travelling a lot lately and find that the glasses in hotel rooms are abysmal. Nothing ruins that nice bottle of pinot you’ve carried in hand luggage on to the plane and finally to the hotel than a small, chunky wine glass. If the hotel has a bar, ask for a wine glass – they’re invariably much better than those sitting on top of the mini bar. It may sound a little snobbish, but I’ve been known to travel with a plastic decanter and wine glass to match. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Logan Ridge of Tears Shiraz 2014 (Orange) $45; 14% My wife loved this. This is cool-climate shiraz filled with dark fruit flavours: blackberry, blueberry and blood. There’s oak, too, which in time will be absorbed into the wine. Rich and balanced, its furry tannins and bright acid are wonderfully structural and seamlessly integrated with its flavour. Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz 2013 (Victoria) $18; 14.4%

From the Gippsland lakes district, this wine blew me away. Firstly, it smells great. Peaches, green melon, white flower petals and struck match minerality are layered, complex and seamless. Smooth and tasty, there’s a mineral-laced line of acid that adds elegance and focus to the weight and intensity of the flavours. ●

Billi Billi’s a perennial bargain. It smells of oak, spice, cherries and plums, plus a little of a wet stone character known as petrichor. It’s composed and energetic, with a nice blend between juicy cherries and blackberries and rich, ripe plum flavours. Bright and fresh, there’s just the right amount of tannic grip to go with the wine’s easy flow. ●

It smells a little meaty, with cassis, blackberry, eucalypt and vanilla aromas – and tastes the same. It’s a juicy, fruity wine that’s made to be drunk now. There’s a nice grip of tannins on the finish. ● Enjoy with \ Pizza

Mythological birthplace of the Minotaur (also Zeus), Crete is Greece’s biggest island, known for its olive oil, wild fennel-sprinkled mountains and countless sheep and goat cheeses. Cheese is a good place to start at Elyros, enveloped into kalitsounia – traditional parcels based on the recipes of Disa, one of the owners’ mums. Their taramasalata and fava bean dip are must-haves, served with koulouria – Greek bagels – warm from the oven. You’ll have to order dessert, the bougatsa, in advance – a sweet pie dished up at the table, oozing with rich lemony custard. As for the main menu, dishes morph and new ones appear between visits. Constants are lots of wild greens and golden roasted vegetables, sustainably sourced meats (from producers such as Greenvale Farm) and finessed fish dishes such as dory with silky cauliflower puree. For some book fans, the monthly gathering is more about gossip, good company and booze. Enter veteran performer Amanda Muggleton with her one-woman comedy called, you guessed it, The Book Club. “This is not an intellectual romp,” Amanda insists. “You know what I’d like to call it? This new production, directed by Amanda’s longtime buddy Nadia Tass, has an updated booklist and has shed an hour from the running time. But Amanda’s intimate approach means each performance has always been unique. “People don’t believe I’ve got a script. They think I’m

I love Elsternwick

For some me-time? I’m still hooked on Il Fornaio. I used to live just up the road as a bachelor, in between marriages. The coffee and food are great, and it’s a chilled vibe. When friends come from out of town? We probably take them to Uncle. It’s modern Vietnamese with super-attentive staff. For some pampering? It’s a cross between pampering and torture – twice a week with my personal trainer Rob Grey up Carnegie way.

For the perfect gift? Hey, I’m a bloke, we’re not much good at that, but probably Adore Homewares or Unreal Flowers for that kind of stuff.

For a pick-me-up? When I want to lose myself I get on the train to the city – it’s only 12 minutes away. I wander around taking in all the changes. ● CLAIRE SLATTERY

The reality I fill out a questionnaire about my skin regime, concerns and general health. I’ll be honest: my skincare involves little more than a bit of water and moisturiser. But two years of parenting has taken its toll and I confess to being concerned about ageing and wrinkles. I lie on a bed as my therapist Sally examines my face under Ella Bache’s signature Truview diagnostic lamp. She then designs a custom facial around my needs, addressing some dead skin build-up and using anti-ageing cremes. The next hour is sheer bliss as Sally applies a series of cremes and exfoliants using gentle massage on my face, neck and shoulders. Sally is a therapist with 13 years’ experience and it shows: not just in her expertise but also in her lovely manner. When we’re done I enjoy a cup of herbal tea and Sally recommends a new skin regime for

me, talking through some products that could help treat my problems. I leave feeling like one does after a massage but better, because I have a fresh new face to go with it. The pay-off Fabulous glowing skin and a general feeling of relaxation and peace. The pain factor Sometimes the truth is hard to hear – but sometimes, such as when you are told that you don’t look as old as you feel, it can be pleasantly surprising. Who should try it? elicity Albrecht is a Latin teacher who loves to pass on her knowledge of the ancient classics. She also loves to play the ukulele and learn hula dances – some of which she performs for her devoted students while chanting Latin verbs. Felicity mentors students at Sacré Cœur including Emma Walling in year 10, who shares a passion for ancient languages and hopes one day to use her knowledge of Latin to help her become a human rights lawyer. ● melissa.heagney@theweeklyreview.com.au

I

chose to study Latin for a few reasons. In years 7 and 8 you study Japanese and French and they’re both compulsory, and then in year 9 you have the option of picking up Latin. I really enjoyed studying Japanese but French wasn’t for me. I’m not really an art or drama kind of girl so, in a way, this is a very utilitarian way of looking at it, but I’d rather do a language than an arts subject. In year 8 I studied Latin Alive, which was once a fortnight and was part of our enrichment program at Sacré Cœur. We learned the Greek alphabet and you could see very clearly it was a history class as well as being a language. I love the way when you’re translating Latin it’s not something that’s really immediate like other languages. It requires a lot of hard work and you can put your own personal flair on it. It’s amazing that something that was written thousands of years ago can be so relevant today. I’m class captain for my year 10 home room and our focus is sustainability as well as general home-room activities like running a birthday roster. We also work on the recycling program, which is a student-run initiative.

We’ve all got a box in our home room for recycling and once every two weeks we rotate through every year level to put the bins out and bring them in again. I think one of the things that I really love about Ms Albrecht is the way she approaches our subject because it is a very academic subject but sometimes she’ll come in hula dancing and decide we’re going to do a 15-minute meditation and she’ll take us to a log cabin [through meditation]. It’s probably one of my most difficult subjects but it’s the one I enjoy the most as well because I think Ms Albrecht ensures we’re still enjoying the challenge of it. She’s really clever because she works very hard at teaching us to motivate ourselves. She lets us work in groups a lot so the temptation is always there for us to sit back and talk – which occasionally we might do – but we know if we do that we’ll fall behind, so we just have to keep motivating ourselves. When I finish school I’d like to be a human rights lawyer and then I’d like to move into politics a bit later on. There’s a course in Canberra that I’d like to do when I finish school called Law PPE – Politics, Philosophy and Economics. ●

I

started here in 2008 teaching Latin and Creative Art Therapy as well as being on the well-being team for four years as a counsellor. It’s a very special place at Sacré Cœur. There is just something special about going to a staff briefing where it isn’t all about pressure and striving – it’s about cherishing individual students. Latin is a magic kind of subject because it’s intellectual and academic and it allows you to time travel. It’s got three parts to it. It’s got the language side, the vocab and the grammar and then you’ve got the history

side – the historical context – and then it’s the literature side with the analysis and interpretation of texts. Latin in the school curriculum focuses on the classical texts so Latin from the classical period of Rome – you’re translating text from Caesar, Cicero, Horace, Livy, Ovid, Virgil – so there’s all these texts; you could spend a lifetime and never have time to read them all. They’re so rich and so fascinating and it’s wonderful to connect to something written more than 2000 years ago. We have a lot in common with the past. I met Emma in year 8 through Latin

(MICHAEL RAYNE A AYNE R)

Alive. It’s an extension subject offered to those who are interested. It’s offered to a select group of girls. In year 9 she was enrolled in the year 11 Latin class because of scheduling clashes. Thus it was a more intense beginning to learning the language than through class, so we did a little bit of extra work together. She was learning verbs while the other students were doing assessments for the VCE. I’ve learned so much from Emma. First of all there’s what I admire about her, which is her steely resolve. That combined with her unwavering confidence in herself, which

is not a fashionable characteristic that we usually celebrate in young women. Having seen girls who excel academically and achieve their personal goals – I know that they’re women that are self-actualised. I really admire this in Emma and I want to foster and nurture this in her. She has lovely attributes as well, like kindness and warmth and generosity – they’re all there too and they’re important but this confidence is important because if students like Emma believe they can, then they can. If they think they can’t then they just don’t. I love watching her push herself in class to learn. ● JULY 20, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 17

t was while he was a student at a Catholic school in NSW that the principal of Xavier College, Chris Hayes, decided to become a teacher. He says it was their care of individual students, their focus on excellence and the importance of making a difference in the wider community that was his inspiration. “I was inspired because of the wonderful teachers I had at school; it was from their example that I wanted to be a teacher … because they really cared about me succeeding,” Chris says. “I [also] just wanted to help young people, to make a difference in their lives, and that hasn’t changed in all these years.” The decision has led to a career that has so far spanned 36 years, 29 of them teaching and leading in Jesuit schools. He has also been head of an Edmund Rice Education Australia school, St Edmund’s College in Canberra. Chris has spent many years in Jesuit Catholic schools where the philosophy and works of St Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the order nearly 500 years ago, continues to inspire students and teachers in their learning and in their lives. It is St Ignatius’ last words, reportedly to St Francis Xavier (for whom Xavier College is named), that have inspired Chris in his role. St Ignatius told his friend to “go forth and set hearts on fire”, to encourage people to learn at depth and give back to the community where needs are apparent. Serving as an inspiration, this phrase has led to “setting hearts on fire” becoming a vision statement for Xavier College and a new tenet for the school, officially launched this month. It also led Chris to undertake a project with academics from Harvard University’s graduate school of education and Independent Schools Victoria. Chris is one of nine principals from Victorian schools invited to work on a project that falls under the umbrella of “leading learning that matters”. As his part of the project, Chris is focused on how Xavier is setting hearts on fire, and on improving how staff inspire their students to learn. “Whether it’s a government, independent or a Catholic school, we’re all trying to inspire our students to have a thirst for learning,” he says.

to park, this is a mid-sized wagon that’s all about satisfying families wanting a stylish, practical car. The rear hatch – oh-so-easy to open and close by remote – has adequate boot space for everyday family needs but might struggle to fit winter-holiday luggage for all the troops. Passenger space is excellent, with a wide interior. The Sportage delivers nicely on interior fittings. There is a hint of designer luxury in the choice of two-tone grey perforated leather seats and a hint of bling in the dashboard’s simple-to-decipher controls. The diesel engine is a bit grumbly at start-up, and the only other quibble concerns the doors. They’re clunky and heavy to open and the back doors have an awkward shape … but these things we can get used to. ●

A glance around the cabin of the Kia Sportage Platinum reinforces this impression of top-notch design and materials in a package that is stylish, practical and beautifully finished. As the all-wheel-drive flagship of the Sportage range, our test car was well-equipped, even boasting two-tone leather heated and ventilated seats. Rolling on suspension tweaked by Australian engineers for a pleasant ride/handling balance, the latest Sportage is a nippy, satisfying entrant in the crowded mid-sized urban SUV market. One gripe concerns the diesel engine, which could do with better engine mounts to isolate cabin vibration. The 2.4-litre petrol engine is smoother but less powerful and thirstier. No gripes about the warranty: an industry-leading seven years. ●

he’s been a fixture of so many Australian lounge rooms over her long career, but Jennifer Keyte has a simple ambition for her own space. “I think in my past life I was a cat,” the Channel Seven weekend news presenter says with a laugh and a stretch. “Comfort and warmth are the two things I crave.” Certainly today the sunlight is streaming through the huge bay window of the rented Brighton home she shares with sons James, 16, and Zander, 13. After years in Stonnington, Jennifer and the boys moved bayside 18 months ago at the urging of family members. “We decided to rent first to see if we liked it and we love it,” Jennifer says. “So much so I have just bought a much smaller, modern townhouse with a sunny courtyard a few streets from here. “I want to downsize a bit and simplify, but a few favourite pieces will always travel with me wherever I go.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

BOOKS I love books. I grew up with Dr Seuss books. I remember as a kid they made me laugh, they made me happy. As soon as the boys were born it was Dr Seuss … and they still get read sometimes. I have the wonderful Elena Ferrante series on the go at the moment.

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

There are some favourite photos of me with my dad John, who is 91, and my beautiful late mum Dorothy. People ask “who is your role model?” It has always been mum and dad – the people I go to for advice – who are my mentors.

My boys know one of my favourite things in the world is a cup of tea. I could give up anything except tea. I have a collection of cups bought for me over the years for Mother’s Day. There is one funny one with a duck because they call me Mother Duck.

AFRICAN QUEEN I bought this bronze of a queen from Benin in an antique store in Nairobi when I went to Africa with World Vision. She put me way, way over the luggage limit. Going to Africa was one of the most special experiences of my life and I got to meet my sponsor child Hannah. JULY 20, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 23

on Chapel Street and Toorak Road from an apartment in LK Tower in the Capitol Grand development. The view, spanning from the city to Port Phillip Bay to the Dandenongs, would never get old nor would I tire of the apartment’s refined interior design by Bates Smart. Still, living so close to the Royal Botanic Gardens, it would be tempting to lace up the sneakers and leave my luxurious cocoon for some exercise. CHAPEL STREET \ SHOPPING

Living in LK Tower, every Saturday AM would begin with a lap of the Tan, maybe two if I was feeling particularly energetic. Let me just say, though – the Anderson Street hill never gets any easier regardless of where you live! I’d never get sick of the trail because I could also try jogging along the Yarra towards the city or around Como Park. Or I could stay indoors and make use of Capitol Grand’s state-of-the-art gym facilities.

cafe connoisseur since moving to Melbourne and my current favourite is SMAK Food House. This Scandinavian-style health-food cafe recently opened on Daly Street, just a stone’s throw from Capitol Grand, so it would be my go-to spot for a healthy and delicious brunch. Most options are glutenfree, nut-free, vegan or vegetarian – and the portion-controlled servings are the perfect follow-up to a morning run or gym session. South Yarra has so many quality coffee and brunch options, you would be hard-pressed to try them all.

No need to baulk at the price tags; there is something for everyone – from Scanlan & Theodore and Dinosaur Designs to Country Road and Windsor Smith. No shopper will walk away empty handed. Living at LK Tower, I could drop off my work blazers for dry cleaning with the concierge on my way out of the lobby and have a chat. Imagine the sheer luxury of living with a 24-hour concierge service at your convenience.

1PM perhaps something on the healthy By 1pm, thoughts turn to lunch,

side to continue the morning’s efforts and to counteract the Saturday-night cocktails that are inevitably coming. For something a bit different but oh-so-Melbourne, there’s the raw high tea at Yardmill Kitchen & Grocery on Toorak Road. This has been super popular since it was introduced last year and it’s something I’ve been dying to try. The sweet and savoury delicacies are typical of a traditional high tea but are made entirely from raw foods and contain no refined sugars, dairy or gluten. Make sure you book a day in advance. As it’s a Saturday, I’d treat myself PM to a blow-wave. There are so many reputable salons nearby, I’d be spoilt for choice. Should I get a movie-star blow-wave at Joey Scandizzo’s salon or a raw cut and colour at Shibui?

3

On the way home, I might pop into PM Gum Tree Good Food to collect a few bits and pieces. I’m a self-titled expert when it comes to cheese platters and this gorgeous specialty store always has what I’m after. It displays its wares like a market; there’s a deli, fresh bread, gourmet chocolates, an extensive selection of wine and even flowers. Countless artisan products will make your grocery shop that extra bit special. Of course, South Yarra has the supermarket giants for your everyday essentials, too.

4

Living in South Yarra, I’d

5.45PM rarely have to venture far –

my friends would all want to meet near home. I’d greet them at South Yarra station, then we could head back to my apartment for a quiet wine and a cheese board in front of the gas log fireplace, or venture out for cocktails and dinner on Chapel Street. After that, who knows where the local nightlife could take us? Forget ordering Uber – Prahran and Windsor are also within easy walking distance, giving us even more options to choose from. Ultra-hip restaurant and

6.30PM cocktail bar Two Wrongs

has been on my bucket list for a while. I won’t have to twist my friends’ arms too hard to convince them to join me for a pre-dinner drink or two here. I’d ask my building concierge

7.30PM to book dinner for 7.30pm

at South Yarra institution Caffe e Cucina. The food, the wine, the atmosphere – everything in this intimate Italian restaurant is amazing. That said, it’s hard to imagine being disappointed by any restaurant in South Yarra because the calibre is so high. Chapel Street and Toorak Road are a treasure trove of quality eateries, from casual dude food at Brother Burger to fine dining at A La Bouffe. For something in between, a hidden gem is Thirty Eight Chairs and the squid ink and matcha pizza bases at A25 are a real treat. ● bziegeler@theweeklyreview.com.au JULY 20, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 25

utdoor living can be an all-year lifestyle, even in the chilly depths of winter. Modern heating solutions such as Thermofilm’s Heatstrip have extended al fresco entertaining in the courtyard or on the balcony – and you don’t need to compromise your design aesthetic with bulky, free-standing heaters. Here are our top five tips for staying toasty outdoors:

OUTDOOR HEAT

HOT DRINK

Raise your body temperature with a hot beverage but ensure you bundle up to keep the warmth. If that sweat evaporates, you’ll actually feel colder.

DR AFT PROOF

Keep the drafts at bay and trap your body heat by positioning your outdoor setting under a canopy or pergola – and protected against the wind.

H O T WAT E R B O T T L E

A low-tech way to keep your body warm and the electricity bill down, and modern designs are funky.

RUG UP

With all the options around, from electric to wool to cashmere, you’d be mad not to have invested in a good throw by now.

he dearth of good bayside properties for sale makes a residential double-deal being offered on a corner site at least twice as interesting. The owners of 122 Cole Street, a conspicuous two-storey house facing west over Hamilton Street, bought next door at 124 Cole Street six years ago, planning to demolish its creaky weatherboard and build a townhouse for each of their children. Their change of mind has created a rare opportunity for buyers seeking an oversized site with potential in the quiet top pocket of blue-chip Brighton. Expressions of interest over $2.7 million are sought for the 675-square-metre corner site. The buyer also wins first option on the adjoining 615 square metres, a tenanted property that has a concurrent expressions-of-interest campaign seeking more than $1.5 million. Kay & Burton co-agent Nathan Berrill says the two titles offer possibilities, including development or renovation of either or both houses, or taking the lifestyle-upgrade path by adding a pool, tennis court and other indulgences. “This screams family to me,” Nathan says. “There are young families in South Melbourne and Port Melbourne who grew up in Brighton and now want to come back to their roots.” The property is walking distance from the bay – think summer leisure, the Bay Trail, gelato vans and sunsets from its upper terrace – but that’s only the start. The family-friendly neighbourhood bridges the chasm between Elwood’s eclectic urban chic and the Golden Mile’s ostentatious luxury. The house at 122 Cole Street, built in 1982 by an Austrian gentleman for his family, shows European influences in its walled balcony and covered terrace, half-pipe terracotta roof tiles, multipaned cedar windows, brown exterior shutters and textured scratch-finish render in an oatmeal shade. A couple of tall palm trees add an exotic touch. At the south end is an integrated double garage, at the north end is the garden – a plain, private lawn rimmed by hedges – and towards the centre, a pedestrian gate and covered porch draw you into the foyer. While the house defies contemporary styling, and could have natural light and garden access improved, it has generous entertainment spaces and a practical floor plan, and was upgraded five years ago. Living areas and halls upstairs and down have wide matte-finish, French oak parquetry. The French provincial-style kitchen has ivory-panelled joinery and display cabinets. The new bathrooms are travertine tiled. To the right of the foyer, the ground floor comprises a study, bedroom (ideal guest accommodation) and bathroom. To the left are the living room, laundry and kitchen, followed by casual and formal dining areas facing a narrow verandah and the lawn. The upstairs rumpus room has sliding doors to the balcony and acts as a divider between the en-suited main bedroom and two children’s bedrooms, each of which has a sliding door to a newly roofed terrace. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@theweeklyreview.com.au

A cul-de-sac location backing on to Merindah Park means there are verdant views from almost every room in this family house. Magnolias along the boundary fences lend elegance to entry, and the neo-Georgian facade looks timeless in stucco render. Apart from a study, powder room and laundry, ground level is given over to open-plan kitchen, dining, living and family areas. Oak floors, recessed lighting, stainless-steel Miele and Smeg appliances and a glass splashback work to create a modern feel in this roomy hub. Glass doors in the living area open to a full-width and covered deck. The backyard has artificial lawn and transparent fencing with a view of the park. This Victorian charmer sits halfway between Albert Park Lake and the South Melbourne foreshore. Behind a picket fence and iron-roofed verandah edged with lacework, the front door opens to a long hallway of polished floorboards. The first room to the left is a bright bedroom with built-in wardrobes and a cast-iron fireplace with marble base and timber mantel. Next door, the second bedroom has built-in wardrobes along one wall and a window with a view of the decked side yard. The central lounge is next, with a wall of shelving and two sets of french doors to the deck. The polished floorboards give way to tiles in the rear of the house. There’s a horseshoe-shaped kitchen with gleaming white cabinetry, stone benchtops and a stainless-steel Ilve oven. A European laundry is tucked into a short hall leading to the bathroom. Outside, the decking drops down to paving space and a vegie patch. A gate in the rear fence leads to a laneway. The house also has ducted heating and cooling. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

BRIGHTON \ 58 CHAMPION STREET With its proximity to the beach, foreshore and plentiful schools, shopping villages and parklands, it’s easy to see why some people never leave Brighton. Just a couple of blocks from Dendy Park and Church Street village, this 1970s house represents a significant opportunity for homeowners and developers. On 848-square-metre block, the house has a commanding street presence, with huge arched windows and a grand central front door creating a symmetrical facade. Downstairs offers a flexible floor plan of open living and dining areas, as well as a study and spacious laundry. The living rooms have dark carpet and white-painted walls. In the formal lounge, cupboards flank a grey-rendered gas log fireplace and television unit. The kitchen is at the rear. It has white cabinetry, timber benchtops and a walk-in pantry. A column decked out in blackboard paint is both a novel and practical idea for a busy family. Outside, the pool, which runs east-west, is surrounded by a glass fence and wide concrete pavers. There’s a self-contained studio that could suit a host of purposes, from hobby space to a teenage retreat. Back inside and upstairs, the four bedrooms all have views across the neighbourhood. This Ebden Street house offers an excellent opportunity to get a foothold in Brighton. It’s a charming Edwardian in a family-friendly location – close to Elsternwick Park and Elwood College and Primary School – and while it’s perfectly liveable as is, it would easily become a polished gem with a renovation.

The house has an excellent artistic pedigree; it’s owned by the former Melbourne International Film Festival director Richard Moore. The floor plan is laid out in classic Edwardian style, with bedrooms off a hallway that terminates in the living areas. Original features include Baltic pine floorboards, ceiling roses, fretwork and

feature leadlight. There are three bedrooms. The minor bedrooms are comfortable doubles, and the main has an en suite and fireplace under a timber mantel. A sunny study with a wall of bookcases could easily be reconfigured as a fourth bedroom. The open-plan living area is a welcome modern addition. It’s bright and light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows.

The low-key kitchen is tucked away to the side. Established gardens border the fenceline, while a raised deck and paved area capture plenty of northern sun, making it ideal for outdoor dining. Other attractions include ducted heating, air-conditioning and a brick-paved off-street parking spot. ● JAN FISHER
