Wanaka Rowing Club Wanaka Rowing Club started in 2007. Four years on the club has over 100 members and has gained 12 National Schools titles and 10 South Island masters titles.

Run on a voluntary basis, a number of people and local business have been crucial to the club. All have contributed mightily and we wel­come anybody who may wish to help out either at the front end or behind the scenes.

Our next big challenge is

to confirm our new club house location alongside the lake. This is not so simple in Wanaka but if we are to grow a lakeside base is essential.

It’s difficult to carry boats 400 metres and cross a main road to the lake, especially for our smaller juniors carrying boats back after a hard training session can be soul destroying!

Although we love our temporary home in the A & P woolshed, it is now too small to accommodate

We are expanding and need more space. Now we are faced with the dilemma that unless we are able to secure a club house closer to the lake, what will be the future be for rowing in Wanaka?

We have had very few arrests this week which is great from our point of view as it frees staff up to get stuck into enquiry work and crime prevention.

Police continue to patrol the CBD area and enforce the local liquor ban. Staff dealt with a 17 year old female, an 18 year old male was arrested on Ardmore Street, and a 23 year old male was also arrested for drinking on Brownston Street.

In a separate incident Police moved a group on from Ardmore Street who had been warned twice that night for breaching the peace. An 18 year old who had had several warnings and chances to move on, returned and continued to argue with Police and he was subsequently arrested.

A business reported that a group of locals continue to cut through their premises late at night to get home. When asked not to because they were disturbing guests, they were generally unhelpful. If these people continue to trespass ultimately it could lead to their arrest.

It's been a busy week for responding to driving complaints; a driver and the passengers were dealt with in response to doing burn outs on a residential street. In a separate incident two car loads were dealt with for speeding, tail gating and hanging out the windows / sun roof. Police also followed up several historic complaints that dealt with poor driving on the open road. Please remember if you witness dangerous driving you can call *555.

Wanaka Land SAR volunteers responded to a report that a German tramper was over due from the Motatapu track.

The tramper had filed a 'trip intention' form with DOC who informed Police when he had missed his panic date.

The tramper was located safe and well when he got to Queenstown and was able to report in. This was before searchers were sent out which is a great outcome. This is a good reminder of the value of completing an intention form, letting people know where you are going, how to contact you and when you are due back.

The search for the missing Wanaka yachtsman has concluded; Trevor Hawke was located on Sunday by the Police Dive team. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. We would like to thank everyone who assisted with the search, members of the Wanaka Yacht Club, Wanaka Land SAR, Lakeland Adventures, Police Dive Squad, the NIWA Rove Operator, the Navy Mines Counter Measure team and members of the wider Wanaka community who helped out with the search and supplying information.

Lastly, on Sunday a diver was seen snorkelling with no dive flag approximately 5-10 metres from the boat jetty (in the boat lane) at Lake Hawea. The water was flat and calm however, he was still incredibly difficult to see in the water in a dark wetsuit. Marty Black the Harbour Master advises us that you are required to display a dive flag and the fine for failing to do so is $300. Police would like to take this opportunity to remind all swimmers and divers to take extreme care on the lakes this summer. Please be aware of the dangers and make sure that you can be seen by other lake users.
