Is your BROADBAND SPEED what you expected?
Broadband providers have been under a continued pressure during the last couple of years to be honest about the speed they actually provide to your home, many companies have been fined for not pro-actively putting this right. Before you check your speed, it’s easier once you understand how speed is measured and what can affect it. Your broadband actually consists of 3 speed factors; download speed, upload speed and contention ratio. The broadband cabling in your area is basically a giant loop, with each house having a connection to that loop, the entire loop will have a maximum throughput, so each house has a “ratio” of that maximum capacity, and this is contention ratio. A business will get more priority on this ratio than homes, and different providers have a different ratio on that loop. There isn’t much you can do about your ratio, but that is why the internet slows down at peak times! Most of what we do on the internet is “downloaded” to the computer, not that much is uploaded during normal usage, so the upload speed is heavily reduced when compared to your download speed, so for example:- an internet connection with 10meg download speed, will only have a 1meg upload speed. This website can clearly show you the speed you are actually getting; www.speedtest.net Select your area, and start the test. If your speed falls very short of what you think you should be getting, try running the test during a quiet time, early morning or very late at night.

WHAT TO DO WITH PENSION FREEDOM
CASH IN, DRAWDOWN OR ANNUITY? New pension rules that came into force in April now mean that you can take the whole of your pension pot as a single lump sum. Short of being in debt so much that cashing in your whole pension pot is a dire and absolute necessity, most of us would not choose to undo our pension pots, unless our imminent death has been forecast. In fact, most of us can expect to live for an increasing length of time after retiring and, requiring income to fund our lifestyles, are likely to consider drawdown or an annuity.
SO, WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOUR OPTIONS IN BOTH CAMPS? DRAWDOWN
• Income drawdown means that your pension fund remains invested and you draw an income directly from your pension pot. It is important to manage the investments and the amount of income you take if you plan to use income drawdown for your income for life. • You have the flexibility to vary your income when it suits you and you still own your pension pot which means that it can be passed on as part of your estate on your death. • Your remaining pension pot will rise and fall with the performance of the investments made. There is a risk of you running out of money if you take too much income relative to the growth of the investments made. • It’s important to remember that the more you withdraw in the beginning of your retirement, the less you will have available to fund your retirement in the future.

for the flower garden
Most people’s introductions to the wonderful world of salvias is either courtesy of sage, the well-loved herb grown from time immemorial for its culinary and medicinal value or perhaps the bright red bedding plant Salvia splendens traditionally planed with blue lobelia and white alyssum for a truly patriotic display. However, hardy, perennial salvias are becoming increasingly popular as great garden plants for people and bees. These are not edible but make a wonderful, long-lasting display in the garden.
There are a vast array of perennial salvias to choose from including many tender types, but this month I’m focusing on the hardy, perennial European types that are great for most gardens. Next month I’ll talk about the types that come from the New World and have proved hardy in my Cheshire garden.

SNOW HILL Of the European species, the best for general garden use are the wood sages and these are varieties of Salvia nemorosa, sylvestris and superba. They grow in dry or moist soils and can be grown in light shade or a sunny spot. In very hot, dry conditions the flowers will be over more quickly so add compost to the planting hole and water if dry. They grow well in alkaline (chalky), neutral or mildly acid soils. Add lime annually if planting in extremely acid soils. They have rough leaves and short spikes of flowers from June through July. If you cut them back hard after flowering they will normally oblige with more flowers in late August into September. The planting distance for these is about 12-18in apart. They come in many shades of blue, pink, violet and also white and vary in height from 1ft through to 3ft 6in.

Snow Hill and Blue Hill (properly called by their German names Schneehügel and Blauhügel) are the shortest ones I grow and are snow-white and sky-blue respectively. Among my favourites are the slightly taller May Night (indigo blue) and East Friesland (blue) and the lovely Rose Queen (pink).

The newer variety Caradonna grows to about 2ft tall and has lovely blue flowers and black stems in summer adding to their drama. One of the tallest is the aptly named Amethyst which grows to 3ft or slight more. This one has a very long flowering period from June to September or even October without the need to be cut back at all.

You can increase your plants by cuttings or dividing in early spring. We’ve tried seed but results can be disappointing. Salvia transylvanica is especially tough and has deep blue flowers in mid-summer. This one can be grown from seed perfectly well. A firm favourite with the bees is Salvia Purple Rain which has whorls of purple-blue flowers along its 2ft 6in stems throughout the summer. Of course there are also many ornamental varieties of the herb sage for growing in a free-draining, sunny spot and you can find types with purple, golden and variegated leaves.

Kinver Music Festival July 10,11 and 12
Jazz and rock; Motown and soul; folk and African rhythm; choirs, brass bands and tribute groups and a harpist; they are all to be found – and heard – at the Kinver Music Festival throughout the weekend of July 10,11 and 12.
The event has been organised by the Rotary Club of Kinver and the team responsible for last year’s Kinver Music Event, with all proceeds going to the Acorn Children’s Hospice and Mary Stevens Hospice, together with profits from a special accordion recital being donated to the village’s Chernobyl Children’s Fund. Over the three days/evenings more than 30 acts will be performing in pubs, restaurants and larger venues. Friday July 10 and Sunday July 12 will be devoted to free shows at Dunsley Hall Hotel, The Cross, The White Harte, The Plough and Harrow, The Royal Exchange, the Vine and The Fox at Stourton. In between will be the Rotary Club’s “Saturday Spectacular”. This will comprise performances by the Band of the West Midlands Fire Service who will be appearing at Kinver High School, Wild Irish Folk Group at St Peters Church Hall, The Stourport Choral Society at Edwards Marsh Centre (KCSA), The Midlands Fretted Orchestra at Kinver Methodist Church Hall, The Gentlemen Songsters male voice choir at the Methodist Church and Chapter8 at Brindley Heath school. One £12 ticket (concessions £10) gives entry to all six venues which are all within walking distance of each other. Performances will be continuous throughout the evening from 7.00 until 10.00 (Chapter8 concluding at 9.00) with breaks to allow movement from one to another. The spectacular ends with a “Last Night of the Proms” grand fireworks display at the KSCA at 10.30. At 2.30 on the afternoon of the Saturday Spectacular, the curtain-raiser for the 18-date

British tour by Ukranians Oleksiy Kolomoiets and Igor Sayenko, who make up the Kyiv Classic Duo, of accordionists will be staged at St Peter’s Church Hall. The performance has been sponsored by CHL Holdings of Brierley Hill, with tickets costing £7 for adults and £5 for children. Oleksiy is a member of the Orchestra of the National Radio of Ukraine and Igor is with the country’s National Philarmonic Society. They will demonstrate how their two contemporary button accordions produce sounds ranging from a small squeezebox to a string quartet, a massive church organ or even an orchestra. Tickets for the Spectacular are available from The Post Office in Kinver High Street and Stourbridge Travel, High Street, Wollaston, who also offer a debit card payment facility. Anybody with tickets for the performances will be assisting the charities further if they dine at the White Harte on the day of the Spectacular as the management will donate 20% of the bill to the charities. The entire event will be launched at 6.00 p.m. on Friday by harpist and vocalist Helen Barley, who will be performing at Dunsley Hall, followed by African Rhythms from Spirit of Djembe, Motown and soul by Beth Sherburn and Americana from Vix and her Mischiefs. The Exiles traditional Irish folk group will be appearing at The Cross later in the evening while there will be an Ed Sheeran Tribute at the White Hart, Amanda with 60s to 80s covers at the Plough and Harrow and Ted’s Northern Soul and Ska night at the Royal Exchange. Sunday afternoon will see 4oz of Groove at The Fox at Stourton; Curly McVicar’s Mob soul and blues mob at the Royal Exchange; Matty Jay with more 60s 70s and 80s covers at the Plough and Harrow; Michael Jackson, Tom Jones, Bruno Mars and Meat Loaf tribute bands at the White Harte; Robert Perry with stylish rock/blues at The Cross. The curtain is bought down on the event at Dunsley Hall Hotel where the final act, acoustic international recording artist Dan Greenaway, takes the stage at 8.00 pm. In the picture: Margaret Homer & Nigel Wiggin The Dudley South May Luncheon at the Kingfisher Hotel, Wall Heath was followed by a most interesting talk by Mr. Nigel Wiggin the great grandson of the founder of Old Hall Stainless Steel.
It began in Bloxwich in 1893 by two blacksmiths from the family of six sons. They made buckles for the leather trade and Nigel’s grandfather William Wiggin introduced stirrups. Soon their work shed was not large enough and in 1904 they moved into an Old Salvation Army Mission Hall, hence the name Old Hall, where they remained for eighty years. The business expanded and had a workforce of over 500. Their big break came when chromium was added to metal and they produced Staybrite products such as bathroom fittings and tableware and changed the name to Old Hall Stainless Steel which became world famous. Sadly in 1984 they were put out of business by cheap poor quality imports. However, Nigel now heads a 200 strong Old Hall Collectors Club on the internet. He was happy to value several ladies tea sets which had been in daily use for over fifty-sixty years and were still as good as new. Members were also thrilled to purchase quality items from the sales table which had been re-polished and sold at very reasonable prices. The next luncheon is on 12th June when the Speaker is Ruth Lowe on Mary Quant Fashion Meetings are held at the Kingfisher Hotel on the second Friday each month and commence at 12 noon for lunch at 12.30 pm when visitors will receive a very warm welcome and can attend three times before deciding to join.
