Why not you? Why not now?

Y

ou will never have more time than you do right now to pursue your dreams. What do you want to do? You think about it all the time, so why not dig in and make it happen? For me, family time, friends, art, athletics and business are one of the same. An inspired mix of elements of each, imaginatively and seamlessly blended together to create the world I wish to live in. I enjoy every day, by choice; because I choose it, and I wish to emphasize the sun shining today is one of artistry and pleasure. It is a gift given to me (and you) along with countless other marvels, opportunities, possibilities and adventures. With this gift comes responsibility to work hard to be the best of strengths and abilities. We must keep our eye on (and off) the ball and an intuitive antennae up in every arena of our life. The unexpected can happen at any moment and the rules can change, drastically.

Anyone that has ever pursued a dream is a living example that when you are passionate about what you are doing, perseverance when nothing is predicable comes with the territory. We are our own thoughts. The journey towards our dreams is about the commitment of learning and growing and being bigger than our commitment to stay the same. There are always the resources, the helps, the talents, the instruction necessary (and available) to make it happen. Great futures are shaped by people with vision, courage, and the wisdom to ask for wisdom to understand beyond boundaries of the known. So be daring, be bold, be honest with others and true to yourself, and live out your dreams. If you believe in your ideas, others will too.

LEADING THE WAY

A good start for over 850 local kids

TOM and NANCI WHITTLE By Melea Johnson

I

had a recent conversation with a friend that took us to memories of our very first job. She spoke fondly of her first experience in the workforce. My first encounter with employment did not go so well. I had been hired by a travel agency in downtown Seattle. I was told I did not need experience as I would be trained. My first day, I was instructed to go to the back resource room and sort out hundreds of travel brochures and create some form of organization. Sounded doable and quite enjoyable as the brochures were intriguing with photos of destinations all over the world that I hoped to someday visit. Then, it happened. The phone rang in the main room where the “agents” were stationed and I was asked to jump in and take a call. I was terrified. After the call, I was reprimanded for ineffective handling of the customer. Lunch time came, I left and never went back. Everyone starts somewhere. A first job as a teenager can be daunting, for sure. On the other hand, in the right situation, it can lay a foundation of work ethics that will be carried on throughout one's life. So much depends on the heart of the employer and the ways of their leadership. Tom and Nanci Whittle owned a Dairy Queen in the Yakima Valley before moving to Moses Lake to open our local Dairy Queen in June of

1984. A fortunate happening for our community, to say the least. In fact, they are recognized in conversation after conversation in a way that sets them apart as not only successful business owners, but more importantly, caring, approachable, and trusted employers of over 850 of our local high school kids (over the years), experiencing their very first job. Hard to comprehend. Eight-hundred and fifty teenagers! All different. Many with a lot to juggle, between grades, sports, music, family, friends, and now being introduced as a part of a fully-functioning team in a successful business. A common thread is found in past employee stories when they tell about their very first job experience working at Dairy Queen in Moses Lake. A genuine respect and admiration for Tom and Nanci’s leadership and the line of communication they develop with their employees to keep the business running in ship shape. Nothing is left to question. Training is handled with clarity and teamwork. They are very clear on what needs to be done in a day. And, best of all, they roll up their sleeves and work right beside their employees. They share the concept that leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example. A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Tom and Nanci do just that.

orking with young people has always been a joy. We know that we have these kids for just a short time but it’s hard not to get attached to them in some way. Teaching the soft skills of life such as people skills, communication, time management and the value of a dollar, will help our young employees in their future endeavors. The greatest satisfaction is when years later we see or hear that those young employees have grown up to be successful in the career of their choice. We hope we had an impact on their life.” ~Tom and Nanci Whittle “

y time at Dairy Queen will always hold a special place in my heart. Some of my fondest high school memories were working for Tom and Nanci as a member of the “DQ Crew!” Their generosity, leadership, strong morals, values, and support, carried me through high school, into college, and life. I truly believe the skill-sets I have today were developed because of my experiences at Dairy Queen. I learned responsibility, multi-tasking, customer service and math skills, what it means to possess a strong work ethic, and most importantly, how to make decisions and work collaboratively on a team. I thank Tom and Nanci from the bottom of my heart for being my “second parents” so to say. To this day, they are still very much a part of our families’ life. We frequent Dairy Queen often, and I still share stories and fond memories with my children about the “DQ days.” In fact, I tell my daughter, who is 10, that I expect her to carry on mom’s legacy as a member of the “DQ Crew” when she turns 16!” “

airy Queen was my first experience with a real job at the age of 15. Tom & Nanci Whittle were wonderful bosses who gave kids a chance to prove that they were capable of working hard and making good decisions. They gave opportunities and trust to each of us. This laid the foundation to my current work ethics and determination. They set the bar high when it comes to great bosses. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of the Dairy Queen Family.” “

fairness and integrity, they think of you. T

om and Nanci were my first official employers. I will never forget having to count change back to Nanci in my interview. They had a way of infusing their desire to have an immaculate and efficiently run restaurant into a team of teenagers, which is a pretty amazing feat. They were very accommodating and supportive towards all of our schedules allowing many of us to be able to continue to work and participate in athletics and other extra curricular activities. Their commitment to their business and to all of us was and continues to be inspiring.”

W

om and Nanci first hired me when I was thirteen. Over the next five years they would teach and re-enforce everything I value today. One must work hard and do the best job they can, respect yourself and others, and family is forever. (family are also those special and few people that are there for you all your life). It took several years in adulthood to realize that Tom and Nanci basically were a second set of parents. They have been present and supportive of almost every major event in my life. The greatest thing I took from Dairy Queen was Tom and Nanci. To them I say thank you for everything you have done and continue to do.”

orking for Tom and Nanci Whittle for five years was a huge blessing in my life. Not only did I gain experience by having a real job but I gained many great friends that I still keep in touch with today. I learned how to handle difficult situations and how to work with difficult people. My leadership skills are what grew the most I think. I became a manager and was in charge of overseeing employees throughout a shift. I faced many different situations at work where I needed to be a leader and make big decisions. With this my patience level grew & so did my compassion towards helping others. I would definitely say working at Dairy Queen helped me in my decision to become an Elementary Education major in college. Tom and Nanci were truly the greatest bosses that I have ever had. I am forever grateful for the love they have showed me in my time at Dairy Queen and even after.”

When looking back as a professional now, I can truly appreciate the opportunity that I was given by Tom and Nanci Whittle. Each and every youth that has worked for the Whittle’s will no doubt one day look back and be thankful for their first foray into the workforce. Tom and Nanci do so much more than provide our community with great service and ice cream. They have touched so many lives in this community in a positive way. Why are the ARTS important? Our CBCCA Board Members share their thoughts. Geri Schrom

“Art brings something special to humanity. It lifts the spirit, feeds the soul and raises the whole level and quality of life in the place that it is presented. It is so important to have choices and have these types of experiences to listen to quality performances. Now that I’m retired, I want to give back to this community and what a perfect way for me to give back to an organization that has been around for 62 years!”

Francie Irwin

“The arts are a vital part of life. I feel each person has an innate need for something beautiful in their lives and this is different for different individuals. The beauty may be seen in natural settings such as a beautiful, colorful sunset, or in a painting by Picasso. A well rounded community needs to offer a variety of art forms to meet the interests and love of the people who live in that community. The arts are a necessary and needed part of every community. I am inspired to help bring quality art to our community, for education, inspiration, relaxation and socialization.”

Peter Meyer

“The Arts are important as they provide entertainment and enhance the quality of life in the Basin. I am inspired most by the quality of the entertainment.”

Floyd Swenson

“The Community Concert Assoc. strives to obtain a level of entertainment by Artists much superior to what is available in or around this area. These programs fill this gap.”

Marcy Favero

“Why are the Arts important to a community? I would like to see families & young people coming to our concerts not just retired folks. Good music stimulates good thoughts and feelings which our world seems to be lacking in today. I want to bring a good type of culture back into the lives of a small town like Moses Lake, and surrounding areas.”

Michael Schrom

Continued from page 36 up in Chicago, surrounded by arts and culture, and working with other professional women in a big city. Exposure to culture and community events were vital and very valuable to help encourage a person to become a well-rounded individual. We live in such a digital two-dimensional world, where you can get everything with a push of a button. But to have a 3-dimensional live concert, especially through music there is no comparison. It has to be experienced through the live audience and performance.”

businesses when considering coming to our town. Music and the arts appeal to people from different countries and one does not have to speak the same language to appreciate it.”

Pauline Lepsche

“Community Concerts are important to our community as they give people who live in rural areas the opportunity to enjoy performances that are usually offered only to those in larger venues. Additionally, they are offered at such lower, affordable prices.”

“The arts help us escape from our daily routines and that is important in our busy lives. The arts lift us up, helping us to have a better outlook on life and motivating us to be better people. I am inspired by the influence that it has on other people.”

Carol Bridges

“The arts are important because they enrich our lives with sights and sounds that broaden our view of the world. I have been attending Community Concerts since I was a young girl in grade school here in Moses Lake. My Aunt Lois Burress was my piano teacher, and I heard beautiful music as a child that was a positive influence in my life.”

Mary Andersen

“Arts are important as it bring a community together to share someone’s expression or interpretation about life or experiences. Music and art can alter our moods, encourage creativity, connect us through lyrics, boost us energetically, or help us relax. They motivate people to attend functions together, which generally include eating, socializing, and if necessary staying overnight in another town or city. This stimulates the economy and makes it appealing to

“The Arts shows us the wonderful talent us humans are capable of creating. The group works hard to ensure everyone can enjoy the talented acts that everyone can afford.” “Music has a powerful effect on humans. It can soothe, heal, reveal, and lift us spiritually and emotionally. Attending a concert offers the excitement of hearing live musicians, and being a part of crowd of people with mutual interests. While music can be enjoyed at home in solitude, being in a concert audience, sitting with other people, listening and enjoying music in an intentionally quiet atmosphere without distraction is a luxury that should be available to as many people as possible.”

Marcia Wood

“Arts and culture should be available in every community as they are a part of life! To experience the interaction between audience and artists is very inspiring, very moving! I think that to offer a variety of music and music that is geared for all ages through live performances is in itself a motivating factor.”

Auditions

Written by Joy Moriarty

Auditions for Masquers’ Christmas Play, Jingle Bells Jury, will be held on Sunday, October 9 at 2:00pm, at the theatre. This is a play for and about children as well as the child inside of everyone. Every year Masquers does this in the Christmas season. “This is a delightful play that will need children of all ages. Teens and adults especially”, says director, Cheri Barbre. “The script calls for 30 people. If not enough people audition, some actors will have dual roles. This is a good play for novice actors to come get their feet wet being on stage” Production dates are on Saturdays and Sundays, the first two weekends in December, the 3th and 4th, and the 10th and 11th. All performances will be matinees beginning at 2:00pm. Please make sure you are available for all of the productions dates before you audition. Jim Dandy is on trial at the Candy Cane Court for telling everyone in town that Christmas spirit is a lot of nonsense and anyone who believes in Christmas spirit is a fool. The Court brings in various witnesses (who you will all recognize) to refute Jim’s position. How will the jury decide Jim’s fate? Go to www.masquers.com to see a list of characters.

Jerry Moberg & Associates Experience

Working for you

I

am the President of Jerry Moberg & Associates. My role is to empower my incredible staff of attorneys and support staff to provide top notch legal services to our clients. I also handle part of the attorney case load primarily in the area of employment litigation, civil rights litigation and sexual abuse litigation.

I started as a lawyer in Moses Lake with my dad. I have been privileged to work for and learn the trial practice from one of the truly great trial attorneys in Washington, Darrell Ries. I was honored to serve Grant County as a Superior Court Judge from 1988 through 1992. I have argued cases at every level, including the United States Supreme Court, the Washington State Supreme Court, the Federal Court of Appeals, the State Court of Appeals, the United States District Courts and the Superior Court in nearly every county in Washington. I have tried over 100 cases to verdict. I have also been fortunate to represent school districts, cities, police departments and counties defending them in state and federal court.

Jerry Moberg

In January 2014 I was able to start my own firm. One of our missions is to create programs that allow us to provide affordable legal representation to the middle class, who do not qualify for free legal services with various agencies but cannot really afford to hire an attorney on the traditional market. With the use of paralegals, automated systems, unbundled legal services agreements and soon Limited Legal Licensed Technicians, we are able to serve this unrepresented group.

JM&A takes great pride in the talent and skill that our lawyers and staff have shown in Courts through out Washington. We care passionately about our clients and will work tirelessly to see that each client is treated fairly under the law. We look forward to representing many new clients, the citizens, farmers, ranchers and small business owners in Grant County as our firm grows along with the community.

rom Rob Caisley, the playwright who brought usHappy, comes a whimsical comedy about love, aging, bad luck, and airport security. Sara’s having a bad week. Really bad! The light bulbs in her apartment keep burning out, there’s a leak in the roof, the aquarium is full of dead fish, the cat’s gone AWOL, and her father — who chased off her last beau — is suspicious of Tom, their new neighbor, a TSA agent who just brought Sara home from the emergency room on New Year’s Eve with a fractured fifth metatarsal. As Tom’s attraction to Sara increases, he learns of the bizarre streak of bad luck that’s been haunting Sara for years – twentytwo years to be precise.

Repertory Dance Theatre

Performing Wednesday October 12, 7:00 pm at the Wallenstien Theater. cba-arts.org

R

DT is the nation’s oldest and most successful repertory dance company. Unlike conventional modern dance organizations, we present you with a diverse range of modern dance styles and choreographers paired together in dynamic and unexpected performances. New viewers often ask us what to expect from an RDT performance. We tell them grace and athleticism, beauty and power. Beyond that, we tell them to embrace the unexpected. So, what is RDT Dance all about? Simply said, we are about art. Art in motion, expressed through our bodies as modern dance. Art that in its immediacy and intimacy can be both thrilling and profound. Art that challenges you, and art that you won’t see coming. For 50 years, RDT has pushed the boundaries of modern dance, while preserving and celebrating its legacy. It was radical when Utah modern dancers beat out the big city stalwarts to receive a Rockefeller grant establishing us as the nation’s first repertory dance company. Today, we’re just as revolutionary as we were in 1966.
