INTERESTING DATES IN THE CITY OF ARMADALE’S HISTORY It is interesting to note various dates on City of Armadale’s timeline that identify its growth over many years.

A major addition to this growth will occur on 1 July 2015 with the amalgamation of two thirds of the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale into the district as the City of Armadale celebrates 120 years since its first council election.

On 14 December 1894, the area now identified as City of Armadale plus the Byford area was formally designated and defined as the Kelmscott Roads Board District, which means we have just passed our 120th birthday.

On 9 March 1895, the new Kelmscott Roads Board District had their first election, with chairs elected W. Butcher Jnr (MarchApril 1895) and F. Saw (MayDecember 1985). Other members elected were H. Anstey, E. Marsh, J. Buckingham, J. Butcher, and J. Marsh.

On 21 March 1910, Kelmscott Roads Board District was renamed the Armadale-Kelmscott Roads Board District.

On 1 July 1961, the district’s name changed to Shire of Armadale.

On 1 July 1977, Byford was succeeded (at their request) to the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale – 38 years ago and soon to return.

On 1 January 1979, the Shire of Armadale changed to the Town of Armadale.

On 16 November 1985, a large increase in the population saw the area identified as a City, which will see the expanded Armadale district celebrate 30 years as a City in November.

On Wednesday 17 December 2014, fifty volunteers working with the Department of Parks and Wildlife gathered at Forrestdale Lake for what has become an annual event to rescue cygnets. At this time of year it is normal for Forrestdale Lake to begin to dry out. As the water recedes, young cygnets are unable to fly away to safety and become exposed to the mercy of foxes. This year all 19 cygnets at risk were rescued. After being crated under the supervision of veterinaries, the cygnets were taken for release to Bibra Lake, which has water in it all year round. The cygnets will continue to be monitored and are expected to grow into adults. Some might even fly back to Forrestdale Lake in the future to breed. Pat Hart.

Former Roleystone Theatre performer John Forde is kicking off 2015 with a mix of confusion, disasters, sexual escapades and misunderstandings in Garrick Theatre’s first play of the year. Written by Derek Benfield and directed by Fred Petersen, “Panic Stations” follows the hapless Chester Dreadnought, who becomes embroiled in one debacle after another when he unsuspectingly buys a property near an artillery range destined for demolition.

A sequence of improbable circumstances ensues with a turbulent trio of wife, newlyacquired girlfriend, and mother-in-law, as well as a shotgun-wielding father-inlaw, clumsy handyman, and sergeant on a mission. Constant explosions galvanise the characters into instant panic and mayhem.

Forde plays the overbearing and bombastic Sergeant Everest. “He’s a typical ’60s era British army sergeant,” he said. “He does everything by the rule book and expects civilians to do the same. To him, there’s no room for the misinterpretation of orders, even though they keep changing – and mistakes made by the military either don’t happen or are swept under the carpet. Like all sergeants of those days, Everest relishes in his authority and uses the same military rhetoric on civilians as he would on his own soldiers, with hilarious results.” Involved in theatre since 2005, Forde has performed with Roleystone, Garrick, Harbour, Melville, and Phoenix Theatres, as well as the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of WA, in productions such as “My Fair Lady”, “Jekyll and

The ARKS Rugby Club are looking for more ladies who are 16 or over to join our Womens’ rugby team! We play full contact Rugby Union, like the All Blacks and Wallabies, with the same rules as the big boys. Rugby is a great sport that caters for players of all shapes and sizes. From the big and strong to the small and fast, there is always a job on the team just for you. Training is more like boot camp to get your body prepared for battle every Saturday, and the team atmosphere is that of a sisterhood, where we all look after each other, on and off the field. This will be the third season for the ARKS ladiesm and it should be an exciting one, with more teams entered into the competition. Our home ground is at John Dunn Oval in Kelmscott, where we train twice a week and play our home games. This season we will have 2 experienced coaches, Terry Foster (Foz) who has been a part of the ARKS Rugby Club as a successful player and coach since the club started, and Carl Forrest, who also played and captained the ARKS First grade Mens’ team. CELEBRATING 25 YEARS SINCE OPENING OF ROLEYSTONE NEIGHBOURHOOD FAMILY CENTRE The Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre is celebrating 25 years since its formal opening in February 1990. In 1983, a local resident Adrienne Curry saw the need for a local “Meet Your Neighbour Group”, which resulted in 16 members of the community regularly meeting at Adrienne’s home, until later on moving to the old Headmasters House in Robin Road on a weekly basis. “Meet Your Neighbour” continued to meet weekly for many years.

In response to the ongoing community demand for discussion groups and adult classes, Adrienne and others from this group decided to form a “Learning Centre” in 1987. After calling a public meeting, an official management committee comprised of 17 people was established. One of their first steps was to apply to the Learning Centre Link for membership. There were a total of 158 enrolments in the first year.

Adrienne coordinated the centre until 1988, when she resigned and gave over the reigns to Wendy O’Dea. The organisation successfully applied for a paid coordinator through the Family Support Scheme. The critical need for a much larger permanent building was critical was eventually provided for by the then local Councillor Roger Stubbs, Member for Armadale Kay Hallahan and Member for Roleystone Fred Tubby, who worked together with the community to achieve this goal. After much hard work they achieved their dream, and in February 1990 the Family Neighbourhood Centre in Wygonda Road was officially opened by MLA Fred Tubby.

25 years on, despite numerous pressures and changes throughout the years, the Centre continues to play an important role for Roleystone and the surrounding communities. The Centre is still a community-led organisation, providing a focus for people gathering together for friendship, exchange of information, and mutual support in learning.

There are low cost programs each term which include a range of activities. There are rooms for hire for community and private use, a Sing Australia group, art classes, a toy library, playgroup, a community health nurse, and a chiropractor.

The Neighbourhood Family Centre is a very much valued community asset, thanks to those original people who had the vision and commitment to see it brought to fruition, and to the community who have held on to that vision and who have contributed so much of their time throughout the years.

There have been some wonderful foster carers in Roleystone and surrounds doing a fabulous job at ensuring these beautiful animals find loving homes. In some circumstances they have had a pretty disheartening start to life, but with ample love, care and affection, these foster cats and kittens are now looking for new homes.

These adorable kittens were found in a shed at around two weeks of age.

Unfortunately, their mother was scared away by a dog. The owner of the property spent several weeks trying to catch the mother, but with much disappointment they were unable to reunite the mother with her kittens, as she did not return to the property. These kittens are now looking for their forever home.

Nyla is the smallest of the litter but seems to stack away the most food. She is very friendly and playful, and will happily lie on your lap for hours and give beautiful face smooches. She’s a lovely natured little girl.

Opal has a slightly darker tortoishell coat and is the most adventurous and outgoing of them all. She loves face smooches and cuddles of any kind.

Aura is the cuddliest of the litter. She will happily play with her siblings but almost always wants to get cuddles and affection from her human friends. She is the most affectionate of them all, yet they are all incredibly cuddly, loving and well natured kittens.

The cats have all been fully vet checked, vaccinated and micro-chipped.

The Shire of Kalamunda holiday program won the 2013 “Healthy Eating” Award at the Local Government Children’s Environment and Health Awards for its contribution to creating environments that protect and support the health of children.

The Kids Cooking Club is suitable for children aged 5 to 12 years, helping children to prepare healthy and hearty meal, and develop a solid foundation of basic cooking skills. The new and improved menu includes delicious recipes for beef, lamb, chicken and vegetarian.

PLUMBING & GAS Heatstroke or heat stress is defined as a state of extreme hyperthermia resulting in thermal injury to tissues. It occurs when heat generation exceeds the body’s ability to lose heat. Heatstroke can lead to multiple organ damage/failure involving the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, blood system and the central nervous system (brain) and can be fatal. Animals can die quickly from heat stress.

The main predisposing factors of heat stroke are a hot, humid environment, lack of adequate shade and water, and lack of adequate airflow. Signs of heat stroke may vary between individuals, but commonly include incessant panting, weakness, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle tremors, muscle spasms, mental confusion, delirium, staggering, collapsing and lying down.

You can prevent heatstroke by providing your pets with a cool, shaded area with good ventilation at all times, as well as plenty of clean fresh water and extra water sources in case of spillage. It is important to bring animals indoors (especially small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, rats, and mice who are highly susceptible to heat stress) on hot, humid days if the indoor environment is cooler for the animal. Avoid exercising in hot, humid conditions by walking your dog very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon.

Do not leave your dogs in a vehicle. Even when the windows are down dogs can still overheat and die. One study found that even on mild days the temperature inside the vehicle rises rapidly to dangerous levels.

When the ambient temperature is 22°C the temperature inside a car can rise to over 47°C in 60 minutes. The high temperatures in the car combined with inadequate ventilation mean the dog cannot thermoregulate leaving them vulnerable to overheating, which can be fatal. Animals in these conditions suffer horribly.

If your dog travels on the back of a ute, make sure you cover the tray with a suitable material to ensure they do not burn their footpads or any other part of their body on the very hot surface.

Owners also need to be aware of sunburn, especially in pets with white, nonpigmented skin and a white-coloured coat.

If it is suspected that your pet is suffering from heatstroke, seek veterinary help as soon as possible. Heat stress is an

emergency. Given the seriousness of this condition, it is better to be safe than sorry and have the dog checked by a vet.

Initial emergency treatment at home should aim to normalise body temperature. Apply or spray cool water onto the animal’s fur/ skin followed by fanning of the wet fur.

Don’t use ice-cold water or ice as this may exacerbate the problem.

All animals are susceptible to heat stroke so owners need to make sure that they take active steps to prevent it. Other exacerbating factors can include obesity, brachycephalic breeds (short-nosed/flat-faced), respiratory disease (laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea), cardiovascular disease, extremes in age, and central nervous system (brain) disease.

During the last Thursday afternoon training sessions before Christmas, some teams took advantage of the hot weather, and had a sliding practice session (with the aid of some soap and water), with even some parents and coaches taking part in the fun.

Our Under 8’s game before Christmas was interrupted by the Roleystone Fire Brigade, who brought us a special visitor. All the kids watched with excitement as the vehicle drove onto the field with sirens blaring, before Santa appeared with his helper and bags of lollies. Santa also visited the players on the back of a ute at the games in Armadale, and handed out candy canes.

Special thanks to Rob van Uden and the Brigade for again bringing us some Christmas cheer.

The State’s players have been extremely busy. On Thursday the 8th of January, they had their shirt presentation. The Under 12’s team were invited to be Baseball Buddies for the Perth Heat game against Adelaide on the 9th of January. They got to meet the players and run onto the field with

them at the start of the game! Under 10’s will be Baseball Buddies on Friday the 23rd of January, when Perth Heat play against Brisbane. Come along for an enjoyable evening. Tickets purchased online cost $12 for adults and $6 for children, or $19.50 and $10 respectively if you buy them at the gate.

They also had their first carnival on Saturday the 10th of January at Forrestfield. The Under 12’s won all 4 games played, and the Under 10’s also did well by winning 2 games. Well done to players, coaches Lee and Paul, and their team of helpers. The next carnival is at Kalamunda on Sunday the 18th of January, and then at Armadale on Sunday the 8th of February.

Whilst I hope you are all enjoying the break from Tee-ball, just a reminder that games for Under 8’s and Seniors (Dugites & Red Sox) commence again with a Friday evening game on the 30th of January, and games played in Armadale on Saturday the 31st of January. Our Little League players start back with a double header at Armadale at 3:00pm and 5:00pm on Wednesday the 28th of January.

Campbells As part of the FRINGE WORLD Festival 2015, Harrisdale resident Blake Jenkins is appearing in a local version of the first Broadway production to star an all teenage cast.

With music and lyrics by popular musical theatre composer Jason Robert Brown, the aptly-titled 13 – being performed at Playlovers Theatre – follows Evan who, just shy of becoming a teenager, suddenly has to cope with his parents’ divorce and a move from New York to Indiana.

As he prepares for his impending bar mitzvah, Evan has to navigate the complicated social circles of a new school where he tries to fit in and become popular with a new group of kids.

Blake plays Richie, a teen obsessed with computers.

“He’s a bit of a goofball but very likeable and likes to be in the middle of everything,” he said.

“Richie likes to be plugged into the goings on of the school, whether it be the latest gossip or getting the best picture at the right time on his phone.”

Involved in theatre for “many years”, Blake first performed in Fiddler on the Roof and, through his music theatre studies with The Stage Key Company, has appeared in The Great Christmas Tree Robbery, Wizard of Oz Young Performers Edition, A Musical Fantasy, and Aladdin Jr. He has also performed in Scrooge and Annie but says the highlight of his career so far has been Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Crown Perth.

“I played the role of Stephen in the children’s ensemble – it was fantastic!” Blake said.

“With 13, the musical appealed because I liked the idea of the whole thing being about children,

performed by children.”

Director Kimberley Shaw says 13 is a musical about growing up.

“In the past few years, I’ve noticed a huge amount of talent among kids this age in Perth and decided I wanted to do a show using this talent,” she said.

“I love 13 and feel it features an age group usually forgotten by producers, who cater for children and young adults, but forget or ignore the age group in between.

“Although it features teenagers, it’s a great show that will be enjoyed by young and old alike.”

Tony Simpson MLA was pleased to announce that seven sport clubs in his electorate were each awarded $500 from the Community Sporting Club Equipment Scheme. The scheme, which started last year, gives regional and metropolitan sporting clubs around Western Australia a one-off $500 subsidy to spend on increasing or upgrading shared sporting equipment accessible to all club members.

One of the teams Mr Simpson sponsors, The Bandits, a Rolyestone Tee-ball Team were successful in their application for the $500 grant. A total of 402 applications

were approved, worth $201,000 with 165 applications from regional WA and 237 in the metropolitan area. Subsidies for regional clubs are provided through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program. Administered by the Department of Sport and Recreation, the four-year scheme will grant $1 million to metropolitan clubs and $1 million to regional clubs.

Applications for the next round open in March 2015.

FORMER ROLEYSTONE RESIDENT PIECES TOGETHER PUZZLING PARTS OF FAMILY

Former Roleystone resident Danni Close is starting 2015 by taking to the stage in the incisive and witty family drama Jigsaws.

Written by Jennifer Rogers and directed by Adam Salathiel, the show opens in February and is the first in a year of all-Australian plays at the Old Mill Theatre to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landing.

Jigsaws is set in Perth in the late 1980s and is about three generations of women in the same family where life seems like a jigsaw puzzle: sometimes the pieces fit, sometimes they don’t and often it’s incomplete.

As the play opens, a Christmas visit has been taking place and the reunion is not exactly fulfilling the spirit of the season. Revelations and indiscretions from the past and present surface, matched with family members’ changing attitudes and circumstances, while they all try to come to terms with each other.

Close plays Monica, someone who hasn’t fallen very far from the tree.

“She’s the spitting image of her mother,” she said. “Monica is a good housewife and a good mother and her home is spotless.

“On the other hand, her sister Alex has fallen quite far from the tree and this upsets Monica no end.

“As the story progresses, we start to see Monica doesn’t necessarily agree with all her mother’s decisions – and is she so infuriated with her sister simply because of jealousy?”

Jigsaws appealed to Close because it showcases issues of motherhood, sisterhood and feminism in a somewhat harsh and truthful light.

“It’s a beautifully poignant play and everyone watching it will relate to one of the characters in some way,” she said.

“I particularly fell in love with Monica because she is a perfectionist, just like me. “There is an amazing scene where the audience experiences the verbalisation of Monica’s inner thought processes and can fully appreciate what she essentially puts up with every day of her life.”

Confessing to always having a love of theatre, Close jumped at the chance to be involved in any production at high school and scored the dux of drama award. Eleven years later, she continues to be involved in several productions a year, either on stage or behind the scenes with Laughing Horse Productions, ARENAarts and the Old Mill, Marloo, Phoenix, Roleystone and Rag and Bone Theatres.

Most recently, Close has appeared in The Hatpin and The Pirates of Penzance and has previously won awards at Dramafest, the annual state drama festival.

“I am really looking forward to sinking my teeth into my Jigsaws role,” she said.

“I hope I can do her justice and make the audience both laugh and cry, just as the playwright intended.”

Director Adam Salathiel says the play deals with sensitive issues and is a fresh, bold and rewarding look at life.

“It’s a superbly written play which, even though set in the ‘80s, has a lot of the messages and themes that are still extremely relevant in today’s society,” he said.

“I want the audience to connect with the various cast members and relate to them and their issues as they are portrayed on stage.

“I also want them to laugh in all the right places yet also feel for the actors and also possibly shed a tear or two.”

Jigsaws plays at 8pm February 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20 and 21 with a 2pm matinee February 15.

closed as seventy career and volunteer firefighters from DFES, Local Government and the Department of Parks and Wildlife helped contain the fire. Aerial support was sent to assist ground crews, while an Aerial Intelligence helicopter also assisted firefighters.

The fire burnt through more than 4.5 hectares, however there was no reported damage to properties in the area. The initial cause of the fire is still unknown.

On Sunday 4 January 2015, a bushfire alert was issued to residents living in and around Araluen Estate in Roleystone just after 4pm in the afternoon. The bushfire alert was later downgraded to a bushfire advice as firefighters fought tirelessly to control the fire.

Although the blaze was controlled relatively quickly, a bushfire advice remained for people living in the southern part of Roleystone up until Friday 9 January. During this time the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) warned the situation had the
