3rd annual King Eric Gibson Regatta set for Montagu Bay this weekend By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net

T

he legacy of one of the most iconic names in Bahamian sailing continues as the regatta named in his honour continues to grow in stature each year. The 3rd annual “King” Eric Gibson Regatta is scheduled to be hosted this weekend (January 6-8) at the Montagu foreshore, each day from 9am to 11pm. The King Eric Regatta Committe aims to attract sloops from the A, B and C classes in an all encompassing family atmosphere on the weekend. The committee members include Eric Gibson Jr (who serves as chairman), Minister of Labour and National Insurance Shane Gibson, Delworth Gibson, Cindy Gay, Stafford Armbrister and Lorraine Hamilton. Their aim for establishing the event was to bring awareness to the contributions “King” Eric has made to the sport. “The King Eric Regatta Committee was formed in 2014 to pay tribute to the legacy of the late King Eric Gibson by recognising his contributions and accomplishments in the development of the sport of sloop sailing in the Bahamas and to hold an annual regatta in honour of King Eric’s legacy,” Eric Gibson Jr said. “King Eric was responsible for establishing most, if not all, of the Bahamian sailing sloop clubs in the Bahamas, as well as starting most, if not all, of the regattas on the various Family Islands. He saw the regattas as an excellent way to stimulate the economies of the Family Islands. I am not sure you would find anyone disagreeing with this sentiment. King Eric was also known as the best sailmaker for Bahamian sailing sloops in the Bahamas. He also supplied most of the Bahamian sloop owners with products to keep their boats in good repair. “King Eric was

He always told me that it wasn’t about him, but it was about building the country. I can truly say that I now fully understand.” The New Courageous, the Barbarian and the Crazy Partner emerged as the overall class champions in the second annual King Eric All-For-One Regatta last year as it officially kicked off the 2016 sloop sailing calendar year. Over the three days of competition, the Courageous collected a total of 14 points to edge out the Red Stripe for the victory. The Courageous, skippered by Emmit Munroe, won the first and last races, losing the second race to the Red Stripe, who got second in the first and second races. Despite not sailing in the first race, Ed Sky came in third with a pair of third place finishes in the final two races. The Southern Cross got three fourths for fourth place with six points and was followed by the Good News, who rounded out the fleet with four points after getting a third and fifth place in the first two races. She didn’t finish the last race. In the B class, the Barbarian tallied 20 points to emerge as the winner. Storr’s Plumbing got sec-

ond with 18, Whiplash came in third with 17 points and the Ants Nest was fourth with 16. There was a protest lodged and race coordinator Stafford Armbrister said they sorted it out before they made the official results on the breakdown of the races between the nine boats that participated. The C class was also keenly contested with the Crazy Partner pulling off a slim 58-57 victory over the Witty K. The Crazy Partner got second in the first two races and was fourth in the third, while the Witty K came in eighth in the first race, but won the final two. Not too far behind in third place was Keep Your Eyes On Him with 54 points after getting a sixth and a pair of third places respectively. “Last year was a smashing success. We had a record number of persons participating, a record number of boats participating, a record number in terms of prizes that was given to the boats because we made it all about the boats and the various regattas in the Family Islands,” said the committee chairman. “This year, we plan to do basically the same thing, but take it to another level.” For those who will be onshore watching the action, Gibson said they also intend to have a taste of

the islands as vendors from the various islands will be selling food from the stalls. “This regatta will be a grand affair hosting all Class A, B and C sloops in the Bahamas wanting to participate,” he said. “There will be an array of onshore activities including entertainment by local acts including Ronnie Butler, Ira Storr and the Spank Band, Soulful Groovers Band, So Be It Band, Funky D, Geno D, Puzzle, Veronica Bishop, Ericka, Dyson, Exzec, Wendy and DJ Rev. We expect this to be a grand affair and would like to thank our early sponsors, the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources with responsibilities for Regattas, Burns House and the general public.” Over 30 boats are expected to participate and the event has the potential to have the biggest fleet in the brief history of the event. “This committee is taking on a great task with bringing in all of the boats. We have boats confirmed from numerous islands already. We are still awaiting boats from Abaco, and we have provisions in place to bring them over,” said committe member Delworth Gibson. “We are looking forward to a good time. We have 34 boats confirmed, but we expect that number to grow exponentially.”

BUDDY WESTERN CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE MONTH By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net BUDDY Hield’s productive month of December was recognised by the NBA and his New Orleans Pelicans teammates and coaching staff have taken notice of the changes in his game. Hield was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month (December) after he led the conference’s rookies in scoring (10.6 points), threepoint field goal percentage (48 per cent) and three-pointers made (33). Hield scored 20 points for the second time this season, in Monday’s 90-82 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Following the game, Pelicans perennial All-Star forward Anthony Davis noted Hield’s improvement over the last month. “He’s playing well. He’s hitting some big threes and attacking the basket, he’s starting to find his groove and that’s what we need,” Davis said. “He’s got a high basketball IQ and we just try to help him out. Knowing that as a shooter teams are going to lock in on him, he has to do other things back cut, shot fake, one dribble two dribble pullups or attack the basket. It’s going to open his game up even more.” Hield has scored in double figures nine times in 16 games, including 12 or more points in each of the final three games of December, which resulted in three straight Pelicans wins. “He’s starting to understand what teams are doing, he’s starting to do a good job of executing, making counter

Trent Deveaux preparing for pivotal transition to pro baseball By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net ONE of the top junior baseball prospects in the country, Trent Deveaux is preparing for a pivotal few weeks as he makes the transition to the professional game. Deveaux, 16, is currently training in the Dominican Republic with his sights set on signing day in the near future. After spending the past six months in the de facto mecca of baseball in the Caribbean, he said the rigorous training schedule has prompted a development in his game as he prepares for the series of important showcases. “We train nine hours a day for six days out of the week. At one time I was waking up at 4am to do a throwing programme and I have practice right after that. So I would be a van going from city to city to do different things and they’re long drives because the facilities aren’t close together. So we drive, sleep when we can on the way and wake up to go straight on the field. We usually get back from that, eat, go to sleep, go to the gym, and then it’s the beach

and the training session on the beach,” he said. “It was a huge difference because we’re used to mediocre or okay players, but in the Dominican everyone is really good. Everyone has something special about them that the coaches look for and it forces you to get better. For me, they say speed doesn’t slump, but I can hit.” Growing up playing in the Freedom Farm Baseball league, Deveaux said he first had dreams of professional baseball following his performance at the Bahamas Baseball Federation’s Nationals in 2011. “The Reds organisation knew me since I was 12 years old when I went to Freeport for the Nationals. There was a guy named Jim Stoeckel, a Reds scout and he was watching the 13-15 game, at the time I was playing 11-12. He said he heard a big crack of a bat so he turned around and saw a tall kid jogging the bases and it caught his attention. He started watching me and watching our game and afterward he took me and dad aside and he was showed me the positives of where my career can go,” he said. The Reds hosted Deveaux to

TRENT DEVEAUX a closed workout last February while he was enrolled in Elev8 Sports Institute in Delray Beach, Florida. The decision to make the progression to the Dominican Republic was one he mulled with his family following previous stops at St Augustine’s College, Max D and Elev8. “I had to go and make my new path. Going through those at that point it grew me up to realise that I had to make some tough decisions. My dad knows me so well and he always looks out for the best for me so I just

lean back and let him make the decisions. He lays out the options and I’ll choose from those and we talk on it. Going to the DR was one of those decisions because I had other options. I could have stayed home, I could have stayed at Elev8 Academy. But we chose the DR because we felt like it was the best path,” he said. “It wasn’t tough for me, I had my eyes on the prize. I was thinking on what was the quickest way to get where I need to go. If I could go the professional route and if I know I’m good enough I thought it was best because in my contract I know I can still negotiate my college fund. At first I wanted to take - I don’t want to say an easy way out - but I thought I could work hard by myself in an environment I knew so I was leaning toward Florida, but my dad said he was feeling the Dominican (Republic) so he talked me into it. I went down there and met the people and I was sold.” Deveaux said he drew inspiration from the Bahamian baseball players who competed for Great Britain in last summer’s World Baseball Classic Qualifier. “[To play for Team Bahamas]

That would be a crazy experience and I’m waiting for it and we could do it pretty soon, we just need some pitching. Everyone in the Bahamas has that athletic ability to run and jump so we have position players but only a few are working toward pitching,” he said. “I support everyone and what they’re doing and I talk to a lot of those guys about their experiences. We all have our plans and our visions but we rarely get together in the same place at the same time. We all want to eventually help and expand baseball in the Bahamas through the two organisations, building more fields, better fields, and promoting the sport better. We just got a good field at the prison but we can’t access that on a regular basis.” The 6’2” outfielder said his decision on a club could come as soon as next month but, until then, preparation continues. “I have to get back in the full swing of things. There is only so much I can do here in Nassau, I need my hitting coach and I need that competition.” As for where he sees himself signing when the MLB calls: “Any place with good weather.”

SANNIE: The Raiders have been surprisingly good all season long and I have to admit, it bothered me every week. Seeing your nemesis happy every week is never fun...but this is where it ends Eddie. TEXANS over Raiders

THE WILD CARD ROUND Oakland Raiders at Houston Texans RENALDO: This could possibly be the worst quarterback situation in the history of playoff football. There was no doubt the NFL was going to schedule this first on the docket as the throw away game. There’s nobody on the planet that wants to see Cook vs. Osweiler. Is it possible to flex out of the playoffs? There’s actually a chance that the NCAA national championship has a better quarterback matchup with DeShaun Watson and Jalen Hurts. If we combine both these rosters...but still with these quarterbacks...does that combined roster have a chance to beat the Patriots? Probably not. It feels like these teams just played that weird game in Mexico but there’s absolutely nothing that we can take away from that. I have absolutely

RENALDO: So who’s going to break the news to her about the last play of Super Bowl 49? Also, about his last relationship before Ciara? Also about that that infamous Hawaiian shirt. As a matter of fact the real testament to Russ’ career wasn’t his mental stability after gifting the Pats the Super Bowl...it was bouncing back from that shirt. My first thought was that the Lions would play like a team that has nothing to lose (they trail in every fourth quarter anyway) but

I’ve completely reversed field. Russ bagged Ciara AFTER he wore that shirt, there’s no stopping someone with that resilience. SEAHAWKS over Lions Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers RENALDO: There was a point when I was just happy to be in the conversation. Then the 1% craze started on social media and they made me a believer all over again. This is what the 2016 Miami Dolphins season has been to me - a series of ebbs and flows where I have no idea what’s going on or what to expect next. This team was bad, until it got really good, but even that’s subjective because they played a cupcake schedule. Then there was a vegan running back and he quit, but this running back is generational and he drinks pickle juice and Cameron Wake was done, but never mind he’s still elite, then Reshad Jones went on WAGS and ruined all of our lives, then Kiko Alonso became a super hero...now Matt Moore. What does any of that mean? PHINS over Steelers

SANNIE: Can someone explain to me why the Dolphins are still playing? It’s the playoffs. I thought they said this is where the good teams play. Sorry, not sorry Dolphins fans. This isn’t the time of year to be wearing teal anyway. STEELERS over Dolphins New York Giants at Green Bay Packers SANNIE: I’m sorry and I don’t know if it’s rational but you can’t convince me to go against Aaron Rodgers. PACKERS over Giants RENALDO: I’m actually with her on this. Aaron Rodgers says “relax” and everyone chills out and they go on a win streak. Below .500, Aaron Rodgers says we’ll win out and that’s exactly what they do. I need him to tell me what company to invest in next or which numbers to play. If I really want to make it in the Bahamas, I need him to tell me which Ponzi scheme to run next because my people seem to love those. PACKERS over Giants

Pro Picks takes a look at the wild-card round By BARRY WILNER AP Pro Football Writer WILD-card games can be so unpredictable because, at times, the visitors come in with a better record than the host. That’s the case in two of this weekend’s matchups, and Pro Picks sees it as a mixed bag. The Raiders (12-4), one of the AFC’s powers until, well, the past three weeks, travel to Houston (9-7) for Saturday’s late-afternoon contest. Then the Giants (11-5) head to Green Bay (10-6) in the capper to the four-game round on Sunday. Pittsburgh and Seattle both have an edge on their opponents in record, and the betting lines show that. The Steelers (11-5), despite having lost to Miami (10-6) this season, are 10-point favorites. The Seahawks (10-

5-1) are 8-point favourites over Detroit (9-7). Regardless, all eight of these teams would prefer to be doing what New England, Dallas, Atlanta and Kansas City are doing: not playing. But they weren’t good enough for a bye. “We want to be better than 9-7,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “I think it’s a league, based on the rules and the way that the draft is set up and free agency — it’s like what I always say, it’s an 8-and-8 league. “We’ve been a little bit better than that, but we’re not aiming for 9-7, but we’re AFC South champions. We’ve got a home playoff game. Great opportunity for our fans and for our players, especially, to go out and play well and try to win a playoff game. It’s going to be very difficult to do that, but I’m glad for the opportunity.”

Raiders to start Cook at QB against Texans By JOSH DUBOW AP Sports Writer ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — For the first 15 games of the season, rookie Connor Cook was inactive each week, making his biggest contribution as a scout team quarterback who would sometimes dress up like Cam Newton or Philip Rivers before Oakland faced those stars to lighten the mood at practice. Now with the Raiders set to play their first playoff game in 14 years, Cook has been thrust into a much more significant role. He will become the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to make his first career start in a playoff game when Oakland (12-4) visits Houston (9-7) on Saturday in a wildcard matchup. “I’m just embracing the opportunity,” Cook said yesterday. “I’m going to go out there and have fun, let it all hang out and obvi-

ously prepare my butt off and do what I’ve been doing all year long and go out there and have fun with my teammates.” Cook moved up to the backup spot last week after starter Derek Carr broke his right leg in the second-to-last game of the regular season. He then got his first real action last Sunday in Denver after Matt McGloin was knocked out with a left shoulder injury. With Carr still sidelined and McGloin slowed by the injury, coach Jack Del Rio called the decision to turn to Cook an easy one. “We just want him to be himself and do what he can do,” Del Rio said. “He played pretty well when he went in and Matt’s hurt. We’re hoping to get Matt healthy enough to be in a backup role. Right now, that remains in question.” Cook showed some positive signs in his limited action last week even though Oakland lost

24-6 to miss an opportunity to clinch the AFC West and earn a first-round bye. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 150 yards and a 32-yard TD pass to Amari Cooper but also turned the ball over twice against one of the league’s top defences. The challenge won’t get any easier this week against a highly regarded Houston defence led by edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney. “I felt pretty calm,” Cook said. “With the hard circumstances, just going in there and stuff, I felt like I was confident. I know the offence well. I’ve been in the system for almost a year now. We were running stuff that I’ve been familiar with. It was actually fun to get out there and get some reps.” The Raiders thought highly enough of Cook that they traded up in the draft to take him with the top pick of the fourth round, moving ahead of the Dallas Cow-

boys, who ended up with Dak Prescott instead. Cook had been projected by many to go higher in the draft to a team looking for a potential starting quarterback but ended up being the seventh quarterback selected. Five of those other players started games this year while Cook just watched, but he will be the first to get a chance in the playoffs. Prescott will start next week for the Cowboys. Cook had a prolific college career, leading Michigan State to a 34-5 record and two Big Ten championships in three years as starter for the Spartans. Cook threw for 71 touchdowns and 9,194 yards in his career but completed just 57.5 per cent of his passes. Cook also faced criticism of his leadership skills after his teammates decided not to elect him as team captain, a slight Spartans coach Mark Dantonio downplayed.

“He did a great job leading us,” Dantonio said. “He led us to two Big Ten championships and three big bowl games. When you’re playing in the Rose Bowl, or Cotton Bowl in the playoffs, or the Big Ten championship games, you’re on a big stage. This of course is a bigger stage, but he has experienced the anxiety that comes in those situations and he has performed well in those situations.” While Cook said he prefers to lead with his play rather than a rah-rah style, his teammates in Oakland noted that his laidback demeanor instills confidence. “He has this calm sense about him,” running back Jalen Richard said. “He got in there in the game in Denver and he’ll be out there ready to call the play and has his hands in his hand warmer calling the play with that swagger. I feel very confident in Connor.”

Dolphins QB Tannehill sits out drills, unlikely against Pittsburgh By STEVEN WINE AP Sports Writer DAVIE, Florida (AP) — Ryan Tannehill stood on the practice field yesterday wearing a cap, T-shirt and knee brace, idly spinning a ball in his hands as he watched teammate Matt Moore throw. That’s how Tannehill is preparing for the Miami Dolphins’ playoff game Sunday at Pittsburgh, where he will also likely be a spectator. The Dolphins’ No. 1 quarterback sat out practice yesterday, making it unlikely he’ll return from a sprained left knee for the team’s first postseason game since 2008. “We may run out of time this week,” coach Adam Gase said. Tannehill has missed the past three games. Veteran Matt Moore, who is 2-1 as Tannehill’s replacement, will make his first career postseason start “unless something changes drastically here in the next two days or three days,” Gase said. However, Gase said Tannehill’s knee improves a little every day, and it’s still possible Tannehill will practice this week. One workout — even Friday — might be enough to clear him for the game, Gase said. The coach said he needs to see Tannehill in both individual and team drills to assess his mobility before deciding he’s ready to play. It would be difficult to start Tannehill against the Steelers if he doesn’t practice, Gase said. “To throw him back there and say, ‘Don’t move, and if anybody gets close to you, go down,’ that’s not really an option for us,” Gase said. “It’s not his style of football. We have to make sure that we feel comfortable with the way that he’s moving

DOLPHINS QB Ryan Tannehill, right, watches as quarterback Matt Moore throws a pass yesterday during practice. I don’t want to jeopardise his career or next season by putting him in a position to where he can’t defend himself.” Tannehill hadn’t missed a game in five NFL seasons until he was sidelined against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14. He began throwing on the side last week and is frustrated not to be practicing, Gase and Moore said. “He’s going crazy,” said Moore, a close friend. “That’s just who he is. He wants to compete.” Tannehill threw for 252 yards in Week 6 to help Miami beat Pittsburgh 30-15. The Steelers spoke Wednesday as though they expect to face Moore this time. “He’s the one handling the steering wheel,” linebacker Ryan Shazier said. “He’s going to do everything he can to make sure the team is in the best position. We’re just going to try and stop him.” Moore is less mobile than the athletic Tannehill, and the Steelers figure he’ll compensate by throwing more quickly. “We’re going to definitely

look forward to that,” cornerback Artie Burns said. “You know the ball is going to be coming out fast because he’s not moving. The pressure is going to come; he’s going to get rid of it.” Moore has eight touchdown passes, three interceptions and a quarterback rating of 105.6, which is higher than Tannehill’s 93.5. Moore said he’s unfazed by any uncertainty regarding how long he’ll remain the starter. “I’m preparing like I have the past couple of weeks,” he said. “That’s all I can do. There is enough to worry about with Pittsburgh, so that’s where my focus is.” Moore’s postseason debut would come in his 10th NFL season. The last time the Steelers played a quarterback making his postseason debut was in the wild-card game five years ago, when Tim Tebow threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns, including the 80-yard game winner to Demaryius Thomas on the first snap of overtime to give Denver a 29-23 victory. Djokovic and Murray advance to Qatar Open quarterfinals DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Defending champion Novak Djokovic and top-seeded Andy Murray posted straight-set wins yesterday to reach the Qatar Open quarterfinals, but only Djokovic was asked to pose for a selfie by his opponent after the match. Djokovic, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, honoured the unusual request of Horacio Zeballos of Argentina after his 6-3, 6-4 win. “I just have to mention making a selfie after the match was over, that was the first time that I ever had this kind of experience in my career,” Djokovic said on the court. “So, Horacio, well done. Very original.” Murray had a challenging outing against Gerald Melzer of Austria, the younger brother of former world No. 8 Jurgen Melzer, before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (6) 7-5 win. “He played great, great tennis and was dominating large parts of the match,” said Murray, who was on the defence through much of the match. “He made it extremely, extremely difficult. I was a bit lucky to through in two sets today. “I think he’s playing much better than someone ranked 69 in the world,” Murray added. In the first set, Murray required nine set points before Melzer mis-hit a forehand to surrender the set. In the second, Melzer saved two Murray match points on his own serve in the ninth game, and then broke for 5-5. since a 42-year-old Jimmy Connors reached the final eight at the 1995 Halle tournament. Stepanek defeated wildcard entrant Arthur De Greef of Belgium 6-3, 6-2 for his quarterfinal berth. Spaniard Fernando Verdasco needed six match points, three in the second set tiebreaker, to upset

fourth-seeded David Goffin of Belgium 6-1, 7-6 (6). Verdasco will play sixthseeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the last eight. The other quarterfinal will pit third-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic against fifthseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, who beat Dustin Brown of Germany 6-1, 6-3.

Spieth gets his revenge on 12th at Augusta 8 months later By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — Jordan Spieth hit 8-iron over the bunker on the 12th hole at Augusta National. He watched his 15-foot birdie putt tumble into the cup on the last turn, and he raised his arms in celebration. Too bad this was December. Eight months earlier, that birdie most likely would have led to another green jacket at the Masters. Spieth, who lost a fiveshot lead on the back nine last April in his bid to become only the fourth backto-back Masters champion, returned to Augusta National for the first time during a visit with AT&T chairman Randall Stephenson and Geoff Yang, a founding partner of Redpoint Ventures. Both are club members. The birdie on the 12th brought a small measure of redemption. At the Masters, he was still leading by three shots when he dumped two shots into Rae’s Creek and made a quadruple-bogey 7. By the time he finished the hole, he was three shots behind Danny Willett and

never caught up. “First time back,” Spieth said of his December round. “I was very nervous when I got on 12 tee.” And he was determined when he stood over the putt on the slower, softer greens of Augusta in the winter. Determined not to leave it short, he watched the putt slow at the front of the cup and then drop for a 2. “I probably gave like a big fist pump,” Spieth said. “I was walking around with my hands up, like, ‘Demons gone.’” And he wasn’t done. Spieth played again the next morning and, with a left pin position, hit 9-iron that spun back and nearly went in. It settled about 3 feet away for another birdie. “So I got two 2s out of No. 12 the first time back,” he said. “Last two times I played the hole, I made birdie.” Spieth made no secret of how much he wanted to get his revenge on the 12th hole. He said he turned to his group and said: “Guys, we have some demons to get rid of here. I’d appreciate if y’all stood to the side of the tee box while I do my work here.” He also had a phone call

DEFENDING champion Jordan Spieth practices on the putting green yesterday prior to the Tournament of Champions golf event at Kapalua Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii. (AP) to make after his round to Michael Greller to share the news. “I know there’s cam-

eras out there, and I’ve requested footage from those two birdies,” Spieth said. “I

haven’t received it yet. Saw the chairman (Billy Payne) and requested some foot-

age, because somebody was watching, I’m sure, when that happened.”

IAAF guidelines for Russians hoping to compete as neutrals MONACO (AP) — The IAAF provided new guidelines Tuesday for Russians hoping to compete in a neutral capacity while their country remains banned from track and field competitions. The governing body of athletics said it is assessing evidence and intelligence relating to around 200 Russian athletes gathered by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren. Applications from athletes for neutral status will also be scrutinised using several criteria to prove they are clean, including: — Whether any of their support staff, including medics and coaches, have been implicated in a doping violation; — Whether there have been

any atypical findings in doping samples or concerns about their biological passports, which are official records of athletes’ blood data; — How often they have been tested in recent years, and whether there are any gaps in their testing history; — Whether any of their samples in storage are due to be retested. Any athletes who are approved will be officially considered “neutral” rather than Russian for the purposes of competitions. The European indoor championships in March would be the first major event under the new rules, with the world championships in London to follow in August. The IAAF said athletes do not

necessarily have to have been tested outside of Russia — which it had demanded last year — but must have been part of a fullycompliant programme for a “sufficiently long period to provide substantial objective assurance of integrity.” IAAF President Sebastian Coe said in a statement: “We continue to find ways to create parallel and credible systems of independent testing of Russian athletes so they have alternative avenues to get back in to competition.” Russian track and field federation president Dmitry Shlyakhtin told the R-Sport agency that he welcomed the removal of the demand that athletes must have lived abroad, adding that up to 50

top Russians could now apply for neutral status. He did not predict how many of those 50 might fit the guidelines. The IAAF suspended Russia from all international competitions in November 2015 after a damning World Anti-Doping Agency report alleged mass doping and cover-ups in the national track team. Since then, senior Russian track officials have received bans and more WADA reports provided further details of drug use and the swapping of tainted samples for clean ones. Since February 2016, testing in Russia has been overseen by the British anti-doping agency because its Russian counterpart is banned from handling samples

due to corruption claims. The fallout from Russia’s doping scandal meant that only one Russian, the US-based long jumper Darya Klishina, was cleared to compete in track and field at last year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The IAAF confirmed to The Associated Press last month that Klishina would remain eligible for 2017 as a result of the permission she was given last year, regardless of any new rules. The other Russian who already has neutral status is doping whistleblower Yulia Stepanova, who gave evidence to WADA of apparent drug use by her teammates. Stepanova competed as a neutral at last year’s European championships.

Tottenham beats Chelsea 2-0 to end 13-match EPL winning run By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer LONDON (AP) — Dele Alli underlined his growing reputation by singlehandedly ending Chelsea’s 13-match winning run yesterday, scoring two headed goals to give Tottenham a 2-0 victory over the Premier League leaders. The defence has been the bedrock of Chelsea’s threemonth hot streak but Alli was gifted space to score carbon copy goals in each half at White Hart Lane after meeting crosses from Christian Eriksen. By taking his tally to seven goals in four games, the 20-year-old Alli inflicted Chelsea’s first loss since its last trip to north London at Arsenal in September and prevented the Blues from earning a league record 14th successive win in a single season. “This league is very tough,” Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said. “Now it’s important to restart. After 13 wins in a row it’s difficult to accept defeat.”

Chelsea still leads Liverpool by five points but Tottenham is now only seven points behind in third after a fifth successive victory. “It’s a big statement for us but we are happy to stay under the radar,” said Alli, whose team’s hopes of a first title since 1961 were ended by Chelsea last season. Conte established the winning run that sent Chelsea to the summit after switching to a three-man defence to stem the tide of goals in a 3-0 first half collapse at Arsenal. But the defence is now leaking goals, conceding four in the last two matches after only letting in two in the previous 12 fixtures. Tottenham matched Chelsea’s formation and restricted Conte’s side to few chances, while proving more cohesive and solid at the back to frustrate the visitors’ forward line. “I didn’t get on the ball as much as I would have liked to,” Alli said. The midfielder didn’t need to. Alli was described on the

eve of the game by manager Mauricio Pochettino as the “most important player to emerge in English football in recent years.” Signed from third-tier club MK Dons two years ago for 5 million pounds (then $8 million), Alli lived up to his manager’s exalted praise with his mastery of the attacking spaces. While Chelsea was looking more likely to score on the counterattack in the first half, Tottenham used a break to devastating effect on the stroke of halftime with Alli making the breakthrough. Kyle Walker teed up Eriksen and as the cross was floated into the penalty area, Alli was left unmarked between Victor Moses and Cesar Azpilicueta to coolly nod past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. It was an assertive start to the second half by Chelsea, but Tottenham preserved its lead. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris blocked a low shot from Diego Costa, Eden Hazard’s low header was off target and Moses’ penalty ap-

The Danish international picked out Alli between Moses and Azpilicueta, and the midfielder found the target with this header. “We were short of the levels we set ourselves, for

peals were dismissed when he was clipped by Mousa Dembele. Spurs then punished Chelsea’s porous defending again in the 54th minute with a replica of the opener. Walker did the running down the right flank before

Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry noted Hield’s shot selection and confidence as the catalysts behind his production.

“I think he’s taking the shots, he’s not going to make them night in and night out but he’s getting much better at shot selection and knowing what’s a good shot,” he said. “He continues to work hard defensively and he’s getting

better in that department as well.” The Pelicans are 14-22 and ranked No.11 in the conference, two games out of the final playoff spot. They recently bolstered their frontcourt depth by signing highly sought after

free agent forward Donatas Motiejunas for the rest of the season. The Pelicans will return to the friendly confines of the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana when they host the Atlanta Hawks at 8pm tonight.

Butler’s big fourth leads Bulls to win over depleted Cavaliers CLEVELAND (AP) — Jimmy Butler scored 10 straight points during a critical stretch in the fourth quarter, leading the Chicago Bulls to a 106-94 win last night over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who had a less-than-100 per cent LeBron James and were without stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. Butler, who was coming off a 52-point game against Charlotte, scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth as the Bulls held off Cleveland’s comeback. Doug McDermott added 17 points for the Bulls, who made a season-high 13 3-pointers. James, who has been battling a cold for several days, was questionable until about 20 min-
