COMMENTARY “Bye, Buy L.L.” January 25, 2017 Ms. Linda Bean, Board Member C/o L.L. Bean Corporate Offices 15 Casco Street Freeport, Maine 04033 Dear Ms. Bean; Let me start by stating this letter and our actions have nothing to do with the “Grab-YourWallet” movement. My partner’s and my actions have been thoroughly contemplated and are not done in a knee-jerk reactionary manner. For us, it is just the right thing to do given the conduct we have observed from our new President over the past year and a half. Enclosed you will find every article of merchandise we have purchased over the years from L.L. Bean for return to your store. As consumers, we no longer care to be associated with any brand that supports and contributes money to Donald J. Trump. So when I read the tweet from Trump to, “Buy L.L. Bean,” it was immediately sickening to us both. It was suddenly apparent that to purchase, to wear, or to display the L.L. Bean brand is now tantamount to supporting the nauseating, vile, and divisive rhetoric of our new President. Unfortunately, for my partner and me, we find it impossible to forget how this man gained the nomination; disparaging women; mocking the physically challenged; and bloviating a xenophobic, misogynistic, homophobic, racist and divisive agenda with every rancid word he spoke. Donald Trump is a serial and lying narcissist. Regretfully and unfortunately, he is now our President – the leader of the free world. And you, Linda, helped him get there with your financial assistance and support. So kudos to you for having received the unwavering support of such a man. However, for my partner and me, as leaders of our own companies, it would be the height of hypocrisy and show a total lack of character and integrity, as leaders, to now ignore and shove aside Donald J. Trump’s consistently vile behaviors. As Representative John Lewis just recently stated, when we see something is wrong we have a moral obligation to say something and to do something to bring light upon the issue. So this is how my partner and I will begin to shine light on this dangerous man and the people that support him. To be clear, this is not a Democratic or Republican partisan issue as we are all for a democratic and united America. This is a moral issue which goes to the core of what it means to be an American and what it means to be a decent human being. Toward this end, please remove my partner’s and my name from the L.L. Bean mailing lists and know that we intent to never be associated with the L.L. Bean brand, in any capacity, in the near future or as long as you occupy a seat on Bean’s Board of Directors. Sincerely, James Murphy and C. Harold Keasler, Palm Springs, CA

COVER Q&A

A CONVERSATION WITH GARY JOHNS

VP OF PS PRESERVATION FOUNDATION BY CHRIS ASTRALA

In short, what is the main mission of the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation? Education about the importance of historic preservation to city leadership and citizens at large, aggressive advocacy when necessary and it almost always seems necessary. Our mission is confined to the Coachella Valley but that is a pretty big area which includes Palm Springs and the other desert cities. As VP of the organization what are your responsibilities? As part of the “executive” leadership of the Foundation, setting advocacy priorities, strategic planning, etc. Fortunately, I don’t have to go to funerals. What does the term “Adaptive Repurpose” mean? Adaptive reuse is making old buildings relevant again. The process of investing in the sympathetic updating of our historic buildings is not only green, it ensures that we save pieces of the community fabric that impart a “sense of place.” We try to convince developers that re-purposing a building is a great investment...we tell them that it is perfectly normal to turn that old bus terminal into a hotel and that it makes economic sense to boot. Why do you think so many Mid Century architects choose Palm Springs as inspiration to build their homes? Palm Springs was on the map early on with modernist architecture, starting with Albert Frey’s 1934 Kocher-Samson building (the building was shown at the Museum of Modern Art’s 1935 exhibition Modern Architecture in California in New York City!). Palm Springs’ Hollywood cachet arguably helped to attract and keep great talent here in the desert as evidenced by the many architect-designed private residences built by the glitterati throughout the midcentury. Palm Springs is a relatively new city

incorporated in 1938, and there was widespread public acceptance of modernist architecture, an acceptance that might not have been found in other places in America. Obviously, just plain luck had much to do with it too! Who and what are your favorite designers and homes here in Palm Springs? As a career Realtor, I have always had an increased interest in architectural homes. In Palm Springs, the preponderance of these types of homes is too many to select a mere few. But to mention few focuses on the obvious, the seven steel houses, Wexler and Harrison, The Dinah Shore Estate, Wexler and Harrison, The Frank Sinatra, Twin Palms Estate, E. Stewart Williams and the Siva House, Hugh M. Kaptur. If I leave out The Kaufmann House, Richard Neutra, I will be asked to leave town. Last year you were honored by the UCLA’S Architecture and Design School, want did that award mean to you? I am a preservationist by choice, there are few personal rewards for advocating to save the buildings I’ve been involved with. This award placed me in the company of other Palm Springs residents that I greatly admire. I was honored to be included.

FEATURE

MODERNISM VISIONARIES ALBERT FREY Albert Frey belonged to a generation that believed in a political role for modern architecture, that of social liberation through machine-made, egalitarian and affordable designs. His chosen materials were aluminum, glass, cables and, eventually, the very boulders and sands of the desert where he settled. In a career that spanned more than 65 years, Mr. Frey remained true to the principle that architecture should make the most of the least. His best known works he created in the Palm Springs of the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. In 1939, Frey moved to Palm Springs. He became part of the movement championed by other California modernists including John Lautner to emphasize the central place of nature in modern architecture. DONALD WEXLER One of the most celebrated Midcentury Modern architects, Donald Wexler designed classic buildings in the spot that became ground zero for that era — Palm Springs Wexler, who was nicknamed “the Man of Steel” for the now-treasured homes and the rest of his work. He designed the main terminal of Palm Springs International Airport with its soaring view of the mountains, the Royal Hawaiian Estates development on a Polynesian theme, and Dinah Shore’s home, recently purchased by Leonardo DiCaprio, which could be the ultimate “Mad Men” house with its floor-to-ceiling glass walls, sunken bar and massive stone fireplace. Though his work was in demand, he thought of himself as a journeyman architect. But when midcentury design was widely rediscovered, he finally received renown and the homes he designed jumped in value. E. STEWART WILLIAMS E. Stewart Williams, an architect whose many works in Palm Springs included a home for Frank Sinatra, helped define what became known as the Desert Modern style. Williams designed many public buildings in Palm Springs, including Temple Isaiah, which won an award from the American Institute of Architecture in 1949. In the 1950’s and 60’s, he completed several commissions for local banks and designed the mountain station for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. In addition he was an extremely meticulous architect who had his hand in almost every aspect of his projects. He designed built-ins, light fixtures, mailboxes, and even light switches. Williams designed many public buildings in Palm Springs, including Temple Isaiah, which won an award from the American Institute of Architecture in 1949. In the 1950’s and 60’s, he completed several commissions for local banks and designed the mountain station for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

WILLIAM F. CODY Cody, an Ohio-born architect who graduated from USC in 1942 and began working in Palm Springs on the Desert Inn in 1945, was also seen as someone who went his own way. He didn’t take a purist’s perspective on design, and would take client’s invitations to design whatever they want, and go as far as he possibly can. Projects such as the curvaceous St Theresa’s Church, or Googie-esque Huddle’s Spring restaurant, show him breaking out of the straight lines that often defined midcentury modernism. And, at a time when the cadre of Palm Springs architects would help each other, passing on jobs or collaborating on projects, Cody rarely worked with others. His projects ranged from residential homes and condominiums, to commercial centers and industrial complexes, to city and community master planning.

JOHN LAUTNER Known for his residences, Lautner was also well-known for the commercial genre named for his design of Googie’s Coffee Shop in Los Angeles. Distinctive for its expansive glass walls, arresting form, and exuberant signage oriented to automobiles, Googie became a fixture in 1950s America but was regularly ridiculed by the architectural community. Lautner’s reputation suffered, despite that fact his designs were as good as ever. Following some lean years, he rose again in the 1960s with the Chemosphere House and poured-concrete houses such as the Elrod Residence Palm Springs.

WILLIAM KRISEL William Krisel, AIA, is one of the most important figures in modern architecture since the 1950s. His influence has been farreaching; he is one of the few architects to have succeeded in the challenge of bringing modernism to the general public. His designs have fundamentally re-defined how we live today.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

In its most basic description, it’s a muscle. Nothing computerized, no easy-to-follow instructions or list of parts. Nope, it’s a muscle – a dub-thumping, miraculous group of cells that was beating when you were born, due to simple electrical activity. It’s just a muscle, although in the audiobook “Beast” by Brie Spangler, the heart knows who it loves. At six-foot-four and 260 pounds, fifteen-year-old Dylan Ingvarsson was a beast. And he hated it. Not only did he tower over every single student and most of the teachers at St. Lawrence Prep, but he was also hairy as a fake-fur blanket. You might get teased, but you don’t get bullied when you’re like that. You don’t have a lot of friends, either, and you don’t get girls. If it wasn’t for his best friend, JP, Dylan wouldn’t know what to do. They’d known one another since they were little and he was everything Dylan was not: well-off, well-groomed, and well-liked. Just walking the halls with JP made Dylan cool, though there was a bit of a dark side to JP’s friendship. Dylan hated that, too. He hated his entire life, come to think, so he took risks. Big, stupid risks, which is how Dylan ended up on a roof, which was how he ended up falling and busting his leg, which was how he got sent to group therapy for self-harmers, which was how he met the girl of his dreams. Her name was Jamie, she was the same age as Dylan, gorgeous, tall, smart, and she had the same struggles with the way her life was going. She only wanted to be friends, but he wanted so much more – partly because Jamie was funny and he liked her, partly because she liked him, and partly because she would prove to JP that Dylan could get a girl by himself. But then everything fell apart. She said she told Dylan that she was transgender, but he didn’t hear that. Was she a dude? He wasn’t gay. She hadn’t hidden anything, hadn’t lied, but Dylan couldn’t get over facts. And he couldn’t get over Jamie… Two minutes. Get past the preliminary tracks in “Beast,” and that’s how long it will take before you’ll be eager to know more about Dylan. Author Brie Spangler gave him the right words with the right attitude, Andrew Eiden reads them perfectly, and you’ll genuinely like this kid with a tough exterior but a marshmallow center. Spangler and Eiden make Dylan come alive in this boy-meetsgirl-who-used-to-be-a-boy story, by giving him more than just one

dimension. He’s a warm, responsible, and complex, well-crafted character; with Dylan, Spangler beautifully tackles a could-bethorny subject, wrestles with its conscious some, and then lets it do its own soul-searching. That leads to a new-old-fashioned love story that really couldn’t be sweeter. Be aware that this audiobook includes a delicately-presented make-out scene that turns surprising, but not graphic. It might be controversial for some, but it fits, so don’t let it deter you. Start “Beast,” and you’ll (heart) it. “Beast” by Brie Spangler, read by Andrew Eiden c.2016, Blackstone Audio, Inc. $34.95 / higher in Canada 8-1/2 hours, 7 CDs

THE MIGHTIEST OF BOOKS BY LEE LYNCH

As an adult, I’ve had no interest in children’s books. I left them behind half a century ago. Or did I? Chicken Little, for example, has been a powerful influence in my life. I was a nervous child—that hasn’t changed—and the Little Golden Book didn’t help. First my mother read it to me, then I read and re-read it on my own. I didn’t have many books then, which might help to explain why visitors never see walls in the home my sweetheart and I share. The walls are covered by bookcases. After an acorn falls on its head, Chicken Little runs around telling everyone she meets that the sky is falling. Toddlers have few filters; I believed every word. I also remember the version in which the chicken is called Henny Penny. Other character names are still familiar and come out in my speech at times: Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey, Turkey Lurkey. I never knew until now that Chicken Little was a folk tale so ancient even the Buddha told a variant of it. During World War II a

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

short film adapted the story to warn of Nazi propaganda. There are very bad endings to the tale, involving a fox, and there are benign endings with positive messages. In the rendition I read, Chicken Little, the runt of the henhouse, gathers a retinue of believers who go to the king to report that the sky is falling. The king corrects and reassures them, urging the animals to be courageous rather than panicked. What a potent message. I internalized it and, for the most part, have lived my life with that moral in mind because I, like many, am a Chicken Little and need the weapon of conscious courage to get through life. Just as important, I learned that words and stories shape and change lives. My mother didn’t believe in spending money on books (Little Golden Books cost twenty-five cents apiece!), but went to the library a lot. She parked me in the children’s section downstairs while upstairs she borrowed authors like R.F. Delderfield, Elizabeth Goudge, and Helen MacInnes.

Little Golden Books appealed to me. They looked most like the “real” books from upstairs, with hard-board covers and metallic gold strip spines. I read The Little Red Hen, Three Little Kittens, and The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowrey, among others. But I had an attitude. As soon as I could hold them, I moved on to books, which didn’t have cartoonish pictures, but sophisticated illustrations and pages filled with words I learned as I went. The family did own a Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Collegiate Edition. Now I could read Huckleberry Finn, Treasure Island, and The Yearling. Those books were absorbing, but I don’t think they taught me anything as important as what I learned from Chicken Little and The Little Engine That Could. Well, okay, I was crushed by the marriage of Jo in Little Women, so I maybe learned what I didn’t want in life. If Chicken Little taught me something about courage, The Little Engine That Could taught me that perseverance is a form of courage. I literally took “I think I can, I think I can,” as my own personal maxim. It carried me through sixteen years of dreaded school days, into employment, and ultimately to writing. I’m convinced those very early books were a big part of what made me the person I am—and a writer. My family read, so that helped. I had a facility for the English language, which meant

affirmation and encouragement from my teachers, and I had some very good teachers. Writing was all I ever wanted to do, besides be gay. I was a very silent kid, but there was so much to share. I scribbled poems in tiny loose-leaf notebooks, and I was always being conscripted into working on school literary magazines. It wasn’t until my thirties that I took the big plunge into fiction. It was truly terrifying. To this day I can’t listen to feedback on something I wrote, even from my gentle, careful, and kind sweetheart. It’s so excruciating I have to grit my teeth, cover my face, read it rather than listen, have some sugar sprinkled on any comments. I still panic at every acorn that drops on my head, draw wrong conclusions, and want to give up and hide under a hedge to wait for the sky to fall. During such times I know there is no confident king to whom I can run. I forget that I’ve already learned the lesson he taught, that the voice of the king is now my own. As a consequence of reading those little folk tales, these days “I think I can, I think I can,” sounds more like, “I know I can, I know I can.” What’s more, when I see a shelf of books I have written, when readers acknowledge my work, “I know I can” evolves to “I know I did.” The moral of this story? The children’s shelves hold the mightiest books of all.

MUSIC

DAVIS MALLORY IS “UNDER YOUR SPELL” BY JOHN STEIN

Davis Mallory, the blond-haired blue-eyed fraternity brother who came out nationally on MTV’s The Real World, is delivering a love message this Valentine’s Day. Produced by KELLR, “Under Your Spell”, the first single from his upcoming EP LOUD, is a lush, heartfelt ballad about those special people who come into our lives, ignite our passions and turn our world’s upside down. “I would love to find someone to spend the rest of my life with,” says Davis, recently single after splitting from a two-year relationship. “Especially since both of my siblings are now married as well as several of my gay friends. I would love to start that next chapter of my life.” “I’ve fallen under someone’s spell several times in my life,” continues Davis from his Nashville home. “From those early high school crushes to my first boyfriend who I dated on The Real World.” Releasing to iTunes Tuesday, February 7th, “Under Your Spell” was inspired by Davis’ most recent ex, a man he was on-and- off with since 2014. It was written during the early stages of the relationship when everything was warm and tingly and their future seemed bright. “I’m a Leo, so when I fall for someone, I envision it lasting forever,” he admits. The excitement is reflected in the song’s music video, directed by Derrick Lipschitz and filmed at the DCXV “Heiroglitches” mural by Nashville artist Adrien Saporti. Starring Ashley Saggs and William Harris III as the joyously unrestrained couple in love, the video, releasing with the single, depicts the story of a relationship taking off. In the mist of their wild exuberance, the video cuts to dreamboat Davis crooning how “in this little world of ours, you are the sun the stars”. “The entire EP was written during my relationship’s climb and fall,” explains Davis of LOUD, releasing April 25, 2017. The title track, written with Mitchell Rose and produced by Ricca Vita & J. Hanna, explores the passion Davis enjoyed at the start of the romance. “It’s my Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get it On’ or my George

24 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Michael’s ‘I Want Your Sex,’” he laughs, with a shy grin. “It’s a bit outside of the norm of what I usually write about.” Two remixes of “Loud” will be included on the EP. The first, by Miami-based producer Landis, will be released later this month by Armada Records. The second remix is by Los Angeles-based producer BPT. In “Ocean Blue,” co-written with Lockwood Barr (winner of Nashville Music Industry Award’s “Best Live Country Performer”) and produced by Brazilian duo Paulo Ventura & RDR, Davis sings about the great lengths he now knows he would travel for someone he is in love with. “The relationship really tested my boundaries on how far I would go to keep it going.” He sings about struggling to maintain a long distance relationship in “Distance,” a song he wrote with Bay Brooks (who competed on TV’s The Voice). “I tear up when I sing the song live as it’s one of the more emotional tracks for me.”

“Be Without You” is the darkest song on LOUD. “I wrote it right after our final breakup, when I realized we had reached the end. My mom doesn’t like the song. She doesn’t like sad music, but it was my way of dealing with the pain that comes from the end of a relationship.”

Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Empire of the Sun, Kylie Minogue, NERVO, and Kraftwerk, among others. While at Astralwerks, Davis began training as a DJ, making his debut at the legendary nightclub Pacha. He also began to dabble in songwriting.

Since the split, Davis has strategically taken a break from dating to focus on his music and dedicate his time and energy to building his legacy. “Music, for me, isn’t about making money or becoming famous. It’s about creating something that I am passionate about and that I hope will live on even after I die. I listen to music all day. It’s the art form I love most.”

In 2013, Davis moved to Nashville to focus solely on songwriting and recording music. From 2015 through 2016, he wrote over 130 songs. He selected those he felt were the most homogenous to create his debut EP, LOUD.

Born and raised in Marietta, GA, Davis was surrounded by a musical family and grew up singing in his church choir. His uncle John Mallory wrote songs for Sixpence None the Richer and Wynona Judd. His uncle Chaz Corzine managed artists Amy Grant, The Civil Wars’ Joy Williams and Michael W. Smith. In addition to appearing on MTV’s The Real World and MTV’s The Challenge, Davis was a music news correspondent for MTV’s NewNowNext.com, curating playlists, reviewing live shows, promoting new music and interviewing artists including Ellie Goulding, Janelle Monae and NERVO. He also worked in A&R and promotion for Astralwerks Records (UMG/Capitol), engaging campaigns for David

“I channel my emotions into my music, hoping they resonate with others. Ultimately, I want to write optimistic, fun songs that spread positivity,” he says. “With the release of LOUD, I’m happy to finally put to bed all the feelings from my last relationship. Its time I look ahead to who may be waiting around the corner.” As to who he might be, Davis explains, “I think someone who is fun and playful and can be my best friend will always be who I’m looking for.” Davis Mallory’s “Under Your Spell” releases to iTunes Tuesday, February 7, 2017. The LOUD EP releases to iTunes April 25, 2017. For more information, visit DavisMallory.com.

PSP FOCUS DISCO DOWN AT THE PALM SPRINGS AIR MUSEUM BENEFITTING MIZELL SENIOR CENTER AND MEALS ON WHEELS BY BARRY DAYTON

In my last couple of years as a college undergrad – when dinosaurs roamed the earth – disco music was the soundtrack of student life for many of us. The Uprising, a stylish and popular hangout, was where frat boys and their Farrah-coiffed sorority girlfriends Hustled and Bus Stopped across the dance floor. But my cornfieldcampus town in north-central Illinois had no gay bars for those of us who weren’t yet comfortable with too publicly flying our rainbow flags. Luckily, my friends and I knew we were within easy weekend reach of Chicago’s gay dance clubs. Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester, Boney M, the Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, The Trammps, The Village People, Chic, and so many other solo artists and groups set a mood of joy that just made us want to move … and still makes many of us nostalgic for those days. When Hollywood figured out they could make money off the culture surrounding disco with the film “Saturday Night Fever,” they did it right – the film received almost universallypositive reviews and made a star of John Travolta. Its soundtrack is the only disco album to win the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year, giving a boost to the already-successful career of The Bee Gees, who churned out multiple #1 disco hits from the movie. You Should Be Dancin’ … to the sounds of The Australian Bee Gees Show and Yvonne Elliman The 12th Annual Stars Among Us Gala, presented by Eisenhower Health and Harold Matzner, to benefit Mizell Senior Center and its amazing Meals On Wheels Program this year honors the dedication

and contributions of Carol and Dr. Ron Fragen, Elaine Frank, and Frederick Noble. Co-chaired by Cyma and Leo Cohen and Eric Rudolph and Bob Iles, the evening celebrates the 40th anniversary of the iconic “Saturday Night Fever.” The emcee will be the lovely Donna Pescow who played a girlfriend and dance partner to Travolta’s dance floor king “Tony Manero.” So, dig out your cocktail attire and get ready to dance. Or get creative with some disco duds – maybe you can find your look at Aunt Betty’s Attic, Mizell’s resale shop – and head over to the Palm Springs Air Museum at 5:30 PM on Saturday, February 25. You’ll walk the neighborhood streets of the film’s 1977 Brooklyn, enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and maybe find something you can’t live without in the silent auction. After dinner and awards at 7:00, the curtain will go up on the “2001 Odyssey” dance club from the film, complete with that lighted dance floor we all thought was so amazing 40 years ago. Without a doubt, you’re going to be out of your seat and dancing with the first song from The Australian Bee Gees Show: A Tribute to the Bee Gees. And in a special performance, Yvonne Elliman – who had early, predisco fame as Mary Magdalene, singing “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” in the rock opera “Jesus Christ, Superstar” – will sing her #1 hit from the movie “If I Can’t Have You.” The Australian Bee Gees Show has been touring worldwide for the past 20 years, becoming the definitive tribute to the Brothers

PSP FOCUS THE DESERT ROSE PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM & SLEEPING BEAUTY OR COMA The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s LGBTQA+ Stage Company, will present Charles Busch’s off-Broadway smash hit comedies Vamipire Lesbians Of Sodom And Sleeping Beauty Or Coma. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, through February 12, 2017. One of the longest running plays in OffBroadway history, Vampire Lesbians Of Sodom is the saga of two fatally seductive vampiresses whose paths first collide in ancient Sodom. Their bitter rivalry as bloodsuckers but more importantly, as actresses, endures for two thousand years with stops along the way in 1920’s silent movie Hollywood and contemporary Las Vegas. The New York Times said of the show, “Nothing escapes the demolition by laughter.” Liz Smith called it “The Season’s Best Comedy.” Joining Vampire Lesbians Of Sodom is its companion piece Sleeping Beauty Or Coma, the classic fairy tale retold in London’s 1960s fabulously mod fashion world. Both pieces contain very funny

adult material, and Vampire Lesbians Of Sodom contains brief nudity. Loren Freeman and Kam Sisco portray the two vampiresses, and other delightful characters. DRP COMPANY members Jacob Betts, Richard Marlow, Terry Huber, Adina Lawson and John Fryer, along with Steven Ciceron in his Playhouse debut, play many other roles. Jim Strait directs and designs the production with costumes by Allan Jensen, wigs by Toni Molano, scenic painting by Walter Lab, and lighting designed by Phil Murphy. Edward Monie is Executive Producer. The Desert Rose Playhouse is a project of Desert Rose Productions, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation. HEATHER JAMES FINE ART CELEBRATES 20 YEARS Heather James Fine Art is celebrating its 20th anniversary and showcasing several distinguished exhibitions this season. While the original gallery opened as Heather James Art & Antiquities, it transitioned to Heather James Fine Art in 2008. The gallery today offers a rare look into art history’s past and present featuring a wide breadth of genres including Impressionist, Modern, Post-War, Contemporary, American, Latin American, and Old Master art. While husband and wife owners James Carona and Heather Sacre had studied art and held art degrees, neither were working in the field when they decided to open the original 1,500 square foot antiquities gallery on El Paseo. “We made a decision to do what we love and that included

a collaboration of art, learning, teaching, history, art history, and traveling,” says Sacre. “The gallery was a way to incorporate all of those things into a lifestyle, and we have found it amazingly satisfying to impart what we know to clients, staff, and the greater community as a whole.”

LEGALLY SPEAKING

MID-CENTURY MODERN

CAN YOU SELL THOSE DESIGNS AGAIN? BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE

I was thinking about the mid-century modern phenomenon and how much I like some of the architectural and furniture design elements when it occurred to me that I don’t really know how to define “mid-century modern”. I checked with my assistant, who claims to have lived through most of that era. She says that depending on with whom you talk, the term can apply to the new designs in architecture, furniture, fabric design and even clothing fashions, all the way from before the German Bauhaus movement in the 1920’s to the growth of the U.S. civil rights era in the 1970’s. After a little research, I found that this is probably as good as any description. But I also learned that many of those people who grew up with it are NOT big fans. And bringing it back to life is not always easy. Sometimes, it might not even be legal. In the U.S., mom and dad got hooked on this life-changing style. With their new affordable mortgages and better jobs after WWII, they bought butterfly chairs, butterfly roofed houses, and anything Scandinavian-flavored. But very few middle class folks could afford the huge prices of original architecture, or furniture like the Eames lounge chair, the Barcelona chair, and Saarinen designs that were the cutting edge of change in that era. Instead, they got the low cost knockoffs and were happy enough. But those were styles that the younger generation vowed to be wary of, to grow out of, and to get away from. Those budding adults wanted new space and new vibes, like every generation before them. Many years later, here we all are – some of us resurrecting and idolizing everything mid-century, often with a much more respectable budget to acquire the stuff. And others who sniff at and snub the whole thing as old-hat and stuck in the dusty past. There will always be people who disagree about style, design, the energy of change – but being an attorney, I wondered if there were any legal issues to bringing back an earlier style. Can you just recreate those houses, that furniture, the fabrics and sell them all over again?

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

I checked into it, and it soon became clear that there is nothing clear about this whole process. There are patent and copyright issues. Zoning and historic preservation issues. Squabbles among manufacturers about who owns rights to a design. And there are politics and passion lurking everywhere. What the heck? How can anything so simple on the surface be so complex? I can’t speak to politics or passion, but my research says there are plenty of nooks and crannies that need to be explored before staking a claim on mid-century modern décor.

How about the architect and the design, the plans, the structure, the usefulness of a building project? In the past 25 years there are finally some legal protections for an architect’s creativity and products. Before that? In the mid-20th century, not so much. Plans, designs and structures rarely qualified for copyrights, patents or trademarks.

FEBRUARY 17 - 2 0

PA L M SP R IN G S CON V E N T ION CE N T E R

How about the furniture designer who blows a hole in the old ways, the traditional, the too comfortable? Who develops a design for the future? Recent laws allowing copyrights on furniture and fabric designs and products offer some legal protection at last. But not for those from the middle of the last century, in most cases. Across the country there are tugs of war over tearing down iconic mid-modern structures, with impassioned cries of “you don’t care about history and art” from the mid-mod-lovers, and on the other side, shouts of “stuck-in-the-past-old fogeys” from the promoters of their own vision of the perfect lifestyle. City councils are begged to classify mid-century buildings as historic structures so they can’t be changed or destroyed. Developers often prod, and even sue, city councils to replace them with newer and more profitable buildings. So, many mid-century modern designs have little protection because laws in the U.S. didn’t offer it for most creative endeavors in that era. Right now, if you find a “new” knockoff house or furniture that you love, you should probably be feeling lucky. Various countries are trying to prevent a second go-round of rip-offs by prohibiting copying or importing copies of certain designs of furniture, fabric and architecture. And the EU and other countries are extending copyright periods to 70 years as a protection for the original designs. The cost of originals is likely to skyrocket, as copies will soon disappear in those areas. In the U.S., the future of “new” mid-century modern design is uncertain. If you can’t afford the huge cost of the occasional original homes and furniture that come on the market, then you may want to find some current knockoffs and grab them while you can.

FITNESS

GETTING BACK ON TRACK BY JILL LANGHAM

Here’s hoping that you are back on track with your Resolutions which I know for most of us include a weight loss plan, or as I like to refer to it as a “Fat Loss” plan. I have found that if I state my wants and needs using terms that directly relate to what it is I want, that I have more success in manifesting the actual results I am looking for. In other words, I put on some extra fat this holiday season and it is the fat that I am looking to lose, not muscle. I have made a strong start and am seeing the fat disappear while keeping my muscles full and strong. Back in the fall, my natural testosterone levels had elevated causing a number of symptoms to occur in my body. My facial hair was increasing in both amounts and thickness, while the hair on my head was falling out; my voice was lowering; my skin breaking out, and my depression worsening. It took 6 weeks before my doctors and I could

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

figure out that I needed to go back on the anti-testosterone medication that I had been on from 2002-2015, and another 4 weeks for it to work. As of a few weeks ago, I am happy to report that I am back on track but now have another new symptom to deal with, that being increased fat accumulation in my breasts, abdominal region and in my hips, also known as having a feminine body! Let me explain. Men and women all have testosterone as well as estrogens in their bodies. It is only the levels of those hormones that dictate if we are a man or woman. If I suppress my testosterone, by taking Spironolactone (the same medication given to men who are transitioning to women) causing my levels to fall, it triggers a message to my female hormones that they are now in charge. Estradiol, which is the healthy form of Estrogen along with Progesterone, the hormone that

is pro-gestation or pro-life begins to prepare the body for a possible pregnancy. Fat cells in the breasts, waist and hips become fuller and therefore so do the accompanying body parts. So, my more muscular, thinner hipped body became softer and fuller, my breasts increased in size, my belly started to swell and my hips grew! Not exactly what I had asked for as a Christmas gift, but that’s life!

NEED FOOD?

So, over the past few weeks I’ve had to really crack down on my work-outs, increase my cardio, and tighten my 6 time a day eating plan to help me balance out the physical changes. But, as in everything there have been some positive changes as well. My libido has increased (just ask a pregnant woman!), my mood has greatly improved, my skin is as close to perfect as I could hope, the hair on my head has stopped falling our and the facial hair softened and my depression has lifted! And if the truth be told, I am noticing more straight men checking out my curves! So, there is a silver lining. I share these physical, mental and spiritual changes to you in hopes that you can begin to appreciate how powerful our hormones are and how critical it is to keep them in balance. Many of us have used or are using hormone replacement therapies to help balance our bodies, but sometimes things outside of our control affect our levels. I was not using, taking or injecting any form of testosterone when my levels went up so no one thought that my symptoms were related to excessive testosterone. As a matter of fact, I now take 1/8 of a cc, intramuscularly of Testosterone Cypionate once every other week to get the positive effects from Testosterone. An intramuscular injection does not have to go thru the liver in order to be utilized by the body versus the testosterone that we make naturally or take orally. In my case I seem to be missing the enzyme that breaks down my natural testosterone into a usable form so it instead built up in my skin and hair follicles causing the symptoms that I described earlier. If my doctor had not thought to test my liver enzymes we might have never figured out what was going on. I am still trying a few over the counter antioxidants and amino acids to assist my liver in performing better. That’s all for now!

WELLNESS

BURNING MIDSECTION FAT BY ADAM SINICKI

Losing weight is a goal that many of us share in common. Almost everyone, barring the most extreme ectomorph, has at some point had this aim – in many cases perpetually. This is a testament to how difficult it is to lose weight, as well as how common it is to have more body fat than you’d like. Carrying extra fat doesn’t just look bad, it makes you feel tired and sluggish, it’s bad for your health and it can even shorten your lifespan. And of all the types of fat that people want to get rid of though, it’s midsection fat that is by far the most unpopular. Midsection fat is of course the extra fat that we carry around our stomachs, which is one of the least attractive and most common types. Beer bellies make us look like we eat too much and like we don’t get enough exercise. They ruin how we look in our clothes and they affect our whole posture. What’s worse though, is that belly fat is often indicative of the presence of visceral fat – the type of fat that surrounds our organs. This is the most unhealthy and dangerous type of fat of all and if it’s left un-checked it can be seriously bad for you. SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT FAT When it comes to losing fat around your midsection, there’s a bit of bad news: it can’t be done. That isn’t to say you’ll never be able to burn midsection fat but rather just that you can’t burn midsection fat specifically. Likewise, you can’t specifically target the fat under your arms, or the fat on your legs. The problem is that the body will always burn fat in a pre-determined order based on genetics and other factors. Normally this is based on the rule of ‘last in, first out’ – much like a good employer. So if the last place you gained weight was around your face, that means that your face will be the first place to lose that extra weight when you start exercising and dieting. This means that for some people, midsection fat will be the last to go. Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do about this: your only recourse is to keep training and dieting until you start to burn that fat around the stomach that you’re so keen to get rid of. And also unfortunate, is that this also applies to visceral fat. The only way to keep visceral (dangerous) fat down, is to keep all fat down. HOW TO BURN FAT There are a large number of theories and recommendations when it comes to burning fat but a few points definitely stand out as being particularly universal and particularly effective.

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

DIET The first of these relates to diet. The best way to lose fat quickly through your diet is by reducing your caloric intake to be below the number of calories you’re burning. In other words, as long as you’re burning off more calories than you’re consuming you will lose weight. This is an iron clad rule and it applies regardless of who you are or what other diet theories you subscribe to. That said, calculating the precise number of calories in your diet every day is hard work and it’s not something that most people will be able or willing to do. That’s why a better strategy might be to approach the question in a more ‘vague’ way. Look for some of the foods that you’re eating currently that include a lot of calories and replace these with lower calorie alternatives. Likewise, add up how much you normally eat for lunch and breakfast and try to keep these figures fairly consistent. Keep in mind that the average person will burn about 2,000 calories a day and see if you can get significantly under this number most days. It doesn’t have to be an exact science – what’s more important is that you’re consistent and able to stick at it. EXERCISE In terms of exercise, cardiovascular training such as going for long runs is what most people will use in order to target their stomach fat. The problem with this strategy, is that it takes a lot of time and a rather large commitment if it’s going to be successful. As it happens, there are more effective methods available that appear to burn more fat in less time. One example is HIIT training. This stands for ‘High Intensity Interval Training’ – a type of training that involves alternating

between periods of intense exertion and periods of ‘active recovery’. Run at 90% of your top speed for one minute for instance, then jog lightly for three minutes and repeat. This way you can burn more fat by putting your body in an anaerobic state – and studies show that it can also increase the amount of energy you burn subsequently. Another thing to consider is using weight training and resistance training. Many people looking to lose weight will ignore resistance training seeing this instead as a way to build muscle. In reality though, it’s actually just as effective at burning calories as running on a treadmill and can trigger some hormonal responses that will be conducive to weight loss. Best of all: once you’ve built muscle, you’ll increase your body’s metabolism so that it burns more fat even when you’re sleeping! FLATTENING YOUR STOMACH If you keep your calories low and use one of the training methods advised above, then you will gradually start to see the pounds fall off and your stomach start to flatten. If you want to accelerate the aesthetic benefits though, then something else you can do is to incorporate some training for your abs as well. Training your abs through sit ups and crunches won’t directly lead to fat loss around the stomach – however it can help to tone the muscle around there which can disguise the appearance of fat by tightening the midsection up. These tips will help you to see results more quickly but make sure that you’re patient and consistent. The best type of weight loss is weight loss that lasts. This is very much a case of slow and steady winning the race!

SOCIAL COMMENTARY

LOVE IS IN THE AIR! BY DR. STEPHAN M. SCOGGINS

So, when you think of February what comes to mind? That’s right, the month after January.(smile) Nah, of course, many of us look forward to overdressing in red, Valentine’s Day and….wait for it… wait for it…a chance to fall and re-fall in love. Love and relationships are “cultural”. I love the word cultural because many allow their minds to think of race. Culture, by definition is: “The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group.” In other words, if you are wanting love you need to associate with people who believe in and value love. Hanging out with people who are always spewing, “There are no good people out here! I’m just going to stay single.” You should immediately turn into Forrest Gump and, “Run Forrest! Run!” Usually, one of the greatest mistakes we make regarding love is that we want to charge the NEW person with the time for the crime that the old person committed. In observing social media posts you will see statements like, “Seeking someone with NO drama!” Well, in the words of Johnny Mathis, “Chances are…” the person writing the ad is the one filled with drama.(smile) Another love error is that we go out with someone and act like we’re supposed to be picking China patterns, or at least, shopping at Ikea by the weekend. One of my dear lesbian friends said, “Only lesbians do that.” I told her that I beg to differ. I know a bunch of err-body that does that.(smile) It is my belief that one of the greatest aspects of love is its cultivation. You may have had a true friend and just from the daily interaction, conversations, observations of their character, which is who they are when no one is looking, you literally start “enjoying” them. Slow your roll, ain’t nobody mentioned sex… yet!(smile) I mean, that you enjoy that they keep their word. You enjoy how they treat other people. You enjoy their topics of conversation. And, now, they are on your mind in a different kinda way.(smile) Now, the greatest reservation is, not wanting to ruin the friendship by telling them that when you think of them you are feeling, “some kinda way”. This does get tricky. What about those of US, who are in long term relationships? Although now married, I have been with my spouse 22 years. I could not imagine my life without him. I don’t want to imagine my life without him. Contrary to popular belief, I find that my love gets stronger as the years go by. We share more experiences, we survive more

40 THESTANDARDPS.COM

experiences, and I am continuously appreciative of the common courtesies and respect we provide each other. My grandparents were married for 73 years. I’m sure that over the years they had, as we sing in the black church, “Some good days and some hills to climb.” However, when you really love someone who is not hitting you or hurting you, the first consideration when there is discord should not be with you saying, “Yo quiero Taco Bell.” Or rather, “I want to leave!” We also should pause to take a good look at ourselves. Err-body ain’t gonna put up with your shit.(smile) Additionally, while for years we have heard that expression, “What it takes to get them it takes to keep them.” I disagree. I think that what it takes to get someone it takes more to keep them. Hell, we all get bored! Getting bored shouldn’t mean that they stop loving them. It just means, what about actively thinking of ways to make them smile, like you did when you were dating? What about going for that picnic, like you did when you were dating? What about, pulling off the road, resulting in steamy car windows, like you did when you were dating? Treat yourself to a love affair. Let your heart and your body feel like it once did or never has. Allow your heart to race when you think of holding someone’s hand. Find the joy of differentiating sex and love making. Some of the best love making you can ever experience doesn’t involve removing your clothes.(smile) Don’t cheat yourself from an opportunity to experience unspeakable joy! Let’s help establish a culture of LOVE. Let’s encourage each other to take a chance on love. Please accept this personal invitation to visit www.BlackIsTheColorOfLove. com and learn about educational and scholarship opportunities for people of all ages, people of all races. As a nation, we MUST change our culture, our learned behavior, so that it can reflect an expression of love in ways that we have only dreamed.

NEW LGBT THEMED COMEDY SERIES “MY SISTER IS SO GAY” BY MONA ELYAFI

The ever gorgeous and hilarious Loni Anderson stars in the new LGBT themes series dubbed “My Sister is So Gay”. Anderson plays Frances, the boozy and inappropriately sexy mother of two middle age children. MY SISTER IS SO GAY was written and created by Terry Ray and Wendy Michaels and is distributed by tello films. The series premiered January 22, 2017 on Tello Films with season One featuring a total of six episodes. Frances’ gay son Seth (played by Terry Ray), is invaded by his uptight, homophobic sister, Amanda (Wendy Michaels) after she catches her husband with her best friend, Katherine. It just seems she’s way more upset about Katherine cheating on her than her husband. It’s not adding up for Seth, especially when Amanda acts all loopy around his lesbian co-worker, Becca (Debra Wilson). Is his right-winger, homophobic sister gay? And Amanda can’t figure out why Seth’s way younger and very handsome boyfriend is interested in Seth. He seems to have too many secrets. Is he married? “My Sister is So Gay is a laugh out loud web series. It has a fun talented cast and we are so excited to be working with Terry and

42 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Wendy. We see their brand of comedy as one that we want to have on our site and plan on other collaborations with them in the future,” says Christin Baker of Tello films. Loni Anderson will always be remembered as Jennifer Marlowe from the hit sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati, a role which garnered her 3 Golden Globe and 2 Prime Time Emmy Award nominations. Loni was a regular in 5 more series and has guest starred in numerous other shows and TV movies like the title role in The Jayne Mansfield Story. Her films include A Night At The Roxbury and Stroker Ace with Burt Reynolds. Her high profile marriage to Burt made them the Brad & Angelina of the 1980s. She is now happily married to Bob Flick, from the folk group The Brothers Four. Debra Wilson has a near cult-like following for her insanely funny impersonations of whacked out Whitney Houston and overly energetic Oprah Winfrey during her several years on MADtv. Actor / Singer Tilky Jones was an original member of the band Take 5 and has recently starred in several TV movies and had a recurring role on the series Nashville. The prolific Sam Irvin is the director of My Sister Is So Gay. For more info go to: www.tellofilms.com
