HELLO AND WELCOME TO A NEW SEASON AT THE SPRING We have recently been thinking about what makes The Spring special and what we think the future holds. We see ourselves as a ‘small venue where big things happen’ and we would really like our community and audiences to be proud of us. With that in mind we have chosen a range of events that we hope will impress you. This season music takes centre stage with the unbelievably beautiful Cara Dillon, Clare Teal and Fay Hield (who comes with the superstar folk line up of The Hurricane Party). The theatre programme includes some of the most exciting and beautiful shows I have ever seen! ‘Finding Joy’ by Vamos Theatre is a wonderful, heart-warming piece of mask theatre. I loved every second and would highly recommend it – especially if you have never seen mask theatre before. Another highlight for me

CELEBRATION OF ANGER’ Tickets: £12, £11 concessions Award-winning comedian Jo Caulfield is back with a hilarious new show. Jo’s always wondered why anger is seen as such a bad thing. When life presents such irritations as vacuous celebrities, endless TV quiz shows, emotionally ‘challenged’ men and drunken girlfriends who always pick the wrong partner, surely having a good rant – and a good laugh – is the only sensible reaction?
Louise’s TV work includes ‘Doc Martin’, ‘Eastenders’, ‘Doctor Who’ and more. She starred in two seasons of ‘Doctor Who’, and played the part of Leela, a travelling companion to the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker).

This trilogy of short plays are based on the real experiences, and local stories, of Hampshire communities. The Spring has worked alongside Forest Forge to help gather local stories that can be seen within the Battle Lines stories. WW1: ‘THE CALL UP’ A century ago a small village community sees a generation of young men leave to fight for King and Country. When the men are gone what happens to those that remain? WW2: ‘KEEP SMILING THROUGH’ As bombs fall on coastal cities in World War Two, children are uprooted from their family homes and spirited away to the relative safety of the countryside. For some it is a time of adventure and new found friendships but for others it is a dark time of cruelty and homesickness. MODERN WARFARE: ‘IN OUR NAME’ The military ‘community’ is a modern phenomenon – often living on the outskirts of a town or city. This play looks at how modern warfare challenges both those that fight and the people they are fighting for. The performance of all three short plays on Thursday evening will begin with a short curtain raiser performance by pupils from Horndean Technology College. A display of the research and development work for the project will be on show in the theatre foyer alongside the performances.

MITCH BENN IS THE 37TH BEATLE Friday 11 April, 8pm Tickets: £12, £11 concessions
Mitch Benn is the comedy musical satirist from BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’. He has released many albums and has hits including ‘Macbeth, My Name Is’, ‘I’m Proud of the BBC’ and a send up of talent shows ‘Sing Like an Angel’. Now he’s putting all that silly stuff behind him to become… the 37th Beatle. His new show combines his Scouse upbringing with his love of music and a lifelong obsession with Liverpool’s most famous sons. It is most definitely not a tribute show and while his affection for his subjects is well documented, expect the satirical twists for which Mitch is well known. As Mitch himself says: “Many have claimed the title ‘Fifth Beatle’. They can’t all be right; some were righter than others…”
“…A MUST SEE SHOW FOR ANYONE WHO EVEN FAINTLY ENJOYS THE BEATLES, ANYONE WHO LIKES POP MUSIC AT ALL, ANYONE WHO LIKES A LAUGH. BENN…PRODUCES AN HOUR OF PURE JOY” Broadwaybaby.com

Monday 6 January – Saturday 31 May 2014
Monday 24 March – Saturday 31 May 2014
The Jewellers’ Showcase is a new show bringing top British designer jewellers from across the UK to The Spring.
The first of our annual Open Exhibitions sees local photographic work take pride of place in the Sadler Gallery. Whether you are an enthusiastic amateur, student or professional, The Open is open to all. All the work in The Open is photographic but subject matter and style vary greatly. The Open was selected from public submissions by a panel including renowned photographer Tracey McEachran with prizes for the best entries. Come and be impressed by the wealth of talent on our doorstep.
Our first showcase features the work of Donna Collinson whose organic pebble-like-pieces are so tactile you’ll love to wear them. Alongside this we showcase the quirky work of Shelley Thomas who brings blacksmithing techniques to jewellery, creating work which has a uniquely industrial edge. In contrast Sally Pawson’s light and pretty aluminium jewellery bedecked with polka dots is the epitome of femininity, and Jenni Wilson’s fun silver figurative jewellery is sure to raise a smile.

ENJOY THE SPRING!
Did you know we have rooms available to hire?
The Spring is Havant’s arts and cultural centre and we hope you enjoy what we do! The Spring is a Registered Charity and gratefully receives regular support from
If you’re looking for a space for a performance or film screening, or if you would like to run a workshop, have a party or hold a meeting, then we can help!
WE ARE ALSO VERY GRATEFUL for the support of our members, sponsors and donors. If you would like to work with us and ensure that you, your friends and family and the rest of our visitors can continue to enjoy what we do, there are many ways you can help: through membership, individual donations, corporate sponsorship, legacies and fundraising.
Room hires start from as little as £12 per hour for our smaller rooms and from £440 for performances. We even offer a 10% discount for bookings of 10 or more sessions at one time.
For details or to discuss your support please contact Sophie Fullerlove, Centre Director at: sophie@thespring.co.uk
Please visit our website for further information or call the Box Office on 023 9247 2700.
