Cover Story

Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta delivers fine quality Italian dishes By Adam Donaghey From the looks of the modest exterior facade of Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta in Dickinson, the average patron may not take a second glance. Those who stop in, however, are in for a treat. Widely known for its freshly made flying pizzas, Gio’s also serves a variety of fine Italian dishes. Using only fresh ingredients and made entirely in-house, Gio’s is much more than your average pizza place. Upon walking inside, customers are welcomed by an upscale, modern decor with a casual atmosphere. The open design is ideal for families and large groups, though booths aligning the walls provide a more intimate environment. Toward the back of the restaurant, there’s a bar with ten beers on tap and high-top tables, surrounded by four flatscreens, making it a great place to have a beer and pizza and watch the games. The best part about having an open restaurant, however, is the ability to sneak a peek behind the scenes. Guests have the opportunity to watch the cooks “fly” the pizza — spinning the dough through the air — saute ingredients, and grill meats.

ence. But Diana is quick to credit her employees, “Our dedicated, diligent staff has been a vital component in Gio’s increasing success.” Gio’s serves traditional, New York-style flying pizzas. With ingredients prepared fresh daily, you can bet the pies will be bursting with flavor. The “Kitchen Sink” special features pepperoni, bacon, hamburger, green peppers, onions, mushrooms and black olives. If you love meat (like I do), try the Meat Special, topped with pepperoni, bacon, Canadian bacon, hamburger and Italian sausage. Veggie lovers will savor the Veggie Special, topped with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and black olives, with the option of adding spinach and tomatoes. Other specialties include the Meatball Formaggio, topped with mozzarella, parmesan and provolone cheeses, with a sprinkle of oregano; the classic Margherita, with extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, parmesan cheese, mozzarella, sliced Roma tomatoes and fresh basil; or the Blanco, an Alfredo based white pizza, topped with parmesan, mozzarella and provolone.

Made from scratch and prepared on site, the food at Gio’s is a dynamic blend of Italian tastes. Healthier whole-wheat alternatives to traditional pizza doughs and pastas are also available upon request. Along with quality food, Gio’s takes great care to ensure that, according to owner Steve Gunnett, “every last customer walks out happy.” Since the age of 15, Steve has been working in Italian restaurants, even owning two previous establishments. When he was a kid, the Italian cooks called him “Gio.” Steve, and his wife Diana, designed the restaurant from the ground up and Gio’s is the culmination of all those years of experi-

Beer Selection = Very Good! You aren’t going to find a better selection of beer in another family-friendly pizza and pasta restaurant. There is a solid collection of draft beer including many craft selections. And the options only increase with the likes of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Peroni and others in bottles. Rating: 4 of 5 Pints!

In addition to pizza, Gio’s serves some amazing Italian specialties — both on and off the menu. Popular items on the menu include the Chicken Gio’s, a grilled chicken breast topped with gravy and mushrooms, butter, marsala wine, and provolone; the Luca Brazi, grilled salmon topped with artichokes, capers and lemon sauce, served with sauteed veggies; the Porcini Ravioli, stuffed with porcini mushrooms, sauteed with olive oil, zucchini, squash, red bell pepper, sundried tomatoes and basil, topped with feta; or the Tilapia Bianco, seasoned and grilled, then topped with a butter, garlic and white wine sauce and shrimp, served with a side of capellini with garlic and basil, and sauteed veggies. Off the menu, you can find some unique specials, not often found at a pizza place. The Pork Valdostana features provolone stuffed, grilled pork ribeye in a Valdostana gravy with mushrooms and artichokes, with a side of veggies and potatoes; head over for a ribeye steak, seasoned and grilled to order, with rosemary potatoes and sauteed veggies; or try the Salmon Pescatore, served in a sherry cream sauce, with shrimp, tomatoes and olive oil, served on capellini pasta, with sauteed veggies. For a high-quality lunch at a reasonable price, including some of the specials listed above, Gio’s is definitely a good choice. - Continued on Page 18

Cullen’s Live (with a capacity of 600) is a two-story Mecca with sound stage, balcony, two lounges, an outdoor patio and terrace. Tuesday is martini night (try the Tiramisu—made with chocolate, Frangelico, espresso and chocolate vodka), Wednesday is free salsa lessons (7-8 pm), and live music on Tuesdays and Thursday through Saturday (schedule varies). There is a cover charge on weekends. Currently, you can partake of the $69 date night (dinner for two in the Main Dining room or Grille) that includes an appetizer, two entrees with dessert and free admission to Cullen’s Live. Half price drinks are available every day from 11 am – 7 pm (on Thursdays until 11 pm in Cullen’s Live and the lounge areas). Brunch is served on weekends from 11 am to 3 pm with $10 bottomless mimosas and bloody Marys. “There’s value to be had in an elegant setting,” says Harris who proclaims that Cullen’s is really a much more affordable place than some may think. You can also reserve the entirety of Cullen’s Live or just the upstairs for a private event. Not open on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day, Cullen’s does provide turkeys to go. General Manager Ryan Roberts suggests that you place your order the week before the holiday. “Advise how many people you want to feed, and we’ll provide you with the entire meal (semi-cooked) along with instructions,” says Roberts. (Cooking time takes about an hour and a half.) Cullen’s gets a lot of call-in, to-go orders, so on a night when you don’t feel like cooking or going out, give them a call. By the way, they are vegetarian and vegan friendly with those items on the menu, but prefer that you call ahead and let them know so they can prepare something spectacular for you. “Whatever you’re looking for in the way of hospitality is just right down the road,” says Harris.

KEMAH ART WALK: October 15 & 16

A Conversation with Marsha Mason

The Kemah Merchants Association will be hosting the Kemah Art Walk October 15 and 16. Artists from across Texas will be showcasing and selling their art, in the Kemah Lighthouse District. Along Bradford, Kipp and 6th Street will be fine art including paintings in oil, acrylic and pastels and also photography and sculptures. Art will be displayed Saturday, October 15 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday October 16 from Noon to 5 p.m. This art walk is free to all attendees.

By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor Last month was the KemahGulf Coast Film & Video Festival, an annual event for 13 years and with many “firsts” this year. We had our first Directors & Producers Forum that brought many wellknown names out and talk started already of even a larger one next year. The finalists’ film screenings were held for two days and kicking off the weekend was the opening night reception and capping off the weekend was the Saturday night award banquet and gala.

A first-time activity during the Kemah Art Walk will be a children’s area. Children will be able to paint on a mural scenes reflecting Kemah. From lighthouses and seagulls to boats and the Kemah Boardwalk, all we ask is the children to bring their imagination! This painted canvas, “Kids Love Kemah” will be displayed during the Christmas in Kemah days starting November 19 through December 18. This mural painting activity is free to all children. Sponsors of the children’s art project are Bay Area Observer, Boardwalk Fudge, and Aroma Gardens Creations. Booth fees are only $25 for both days and artists will be responsible for bringing a tent if needed. An open house for the artists, sponsors and merchants will be October 14, Friday evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Kemah Visitor Center at 604 Bradford.

I have had the opportunity to work with nine award-winning celebrity guests that the film festival chairman and committee host for the annual weekend over the past years. This year was a real treat with the four-time Academy Award Nominee, Golden Globe recipient, Emmy Nominee and even Grammy Nominee, Broadway legend, actress Marsha Mason.

For more information or to reserve a booth, call Kemah Merchants Association President Sandra Williams from Boardwalk Fudge, 281-538-4165 or Domino Taylor at the Kemah Visitor Center at 281-334-3181. Log on to websites www.kemahmerchants.com or www.kemah-tx.gov.

Friday night was a night full of media interviewing and filming, her Saturday morning continued with a one-on-ones and wrapping up the morning with a final taping of an upcoming PBS show.

I decided to forgo the notebook and just visit with Marsha and talk like any two women just meeting and sharing a meal. I was so curious about her life in New Mexico and her famous farm. Her publicist Ross was a jewel, and we did a lot of laughing which always makes it easy to proceed to talk about “nonHollywood” bio things. Ms. Mason is a successful entrepreneur as well as an ac-

claimed actress. She has a 247 acres farm, Rio Abajo Rio, in Abiquiu, New Mexico, that is a certified organic medicinal herb farm, which produces Resting the River Natural Products. Her majestic farm that runs along a two-mile stretch on the Rio Chama, had a fast turn-around as she nurtured this idle land back to life where she said it was “in a state where water is precious and scarce.” Dubbed the Mystical Land, acres are available for sale for numerous possibilities around her Argentinean estancia, a compound circling a classic central fountain courtyard. Although her primary residence is in New York, her stories that had her eyes sparkle were about the herb farm in New Mexico and her dog rescue activities. She has many irons in the fire and one will notice she handles all of them with grace as she spoke while regularly flashing that famous smile. It was a really pleasurable weekend, and we all appreciated her spending time with us as she took a piece of Texas back home. For more information on her organic herbs and products, go to www.rioabajorio.com. Also, be sure to catch her in November in a new re-occurring role in ABC’s sitcom, “The Middle.” I am certain there will be some good laughs!

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence

of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

This year’s show welcomes many new additions to the legendary event including the Red Bull Motorsports Teams of Kirby Chambliss, in his Zivko Edge 540, and Chuck Aaron, the only civilian pilot to be licensed in the U.S. to perform helicopter aerobatics. Aaron will keep audiences on the edge of their seats with his back flips, 360-degree rolls and a heart-stopping tumble, called the Chuckcilvak. In addition to new aircraft, the Red Bull Air Force Parachute Team will take to the skies in their winged jump suits as they approach the crowd at Ellington Airport. Fans will also be treated with an exclusive look as the Horsemen pilots take to the skies in F-86 Sabres debuting in Houston. Jason Newburg, 2010 Lonestar Aerobatic Unlimited Champion, will showcase his high energy performance in a Pitts Viper. The 2011 Wings Over Houston Airshow returning favorites include the always-popular Tora!Tora!Tora! reenactment of the World War II air power attack on Pearl Harbor. Also returning will be the AD-4 Skyraider, O-2 Forward Air Command "Oscar Duece" and AC-47 Spooky Gunship. The Boeing B-29 Superfortress “FIFI” returns to the skies in a rare sighting as it is the only flying B-29 remaining. Military demonstrations include the Air Force Heritage Flight, U.S. Coast Guard MH65C Dolphin Helicopter, U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet from the West Coast Demo Team, the C-130H Tactical Special Forces Jump and AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter Demo. “Wings Over Houston Airshow strives to bring new, exciting aviation demonstrations and exhibits each year,” said Bill Roach, executive director of Wings Over Houston Airshow. “We appreciate our loyal volunteers, spon-

sors, fans, and members of the media as the event could not be a success without each and every one of you.” Other highlights of the 2011 Wings Over Houston Airshow include the “Legends & Heroes Autograph Tent”, 6th Cavalry Historical Association, Military Museum of Texas, interactive displays from NASA, a children’s carnival area including a rock wall and mechanical bull and exhilarating Aircraft M-4 simulator rides. TORA, TORA, TORA honored with Lloyd P. Nolen Lifetime Achievement in Aviation Award Wings Over Houston Airshow recently announced Tora, Tora, Tora as the recipient of the 2011 Lloyd P. Nolen Lifetime Achievement in Aviation Award, which honors individuals, organizations, companies and corporations dedicated to the promotion or advancement of aviation. As one of the most dramatic and visual acts in the air show industry, Tora, Tora, Tora performs twelve to sixteen airshows a year in the United States and Canada with its recreation of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Tora, Tora, Tora began nearly 40 years ago when six replica Japanese aircraft were donated to the Commemorative Air Force. The Gulf Coast Wing requested assignment of the aircraft and began developing an act for presentation at air shows, which debuted at the Galveston Air Show on June 25, 1972. A living history lesson, Tora’s re-creation provides breathtaking smoke, fire and explosions from the pyrotechnics team as a professional announcer explains the purpose, history and performance to the crowd. With the motto “Lest We Forget,” the Tora group flies with the intention to help individuals throughout the world understand that war does not discriminate in the pain it causes. “Wings Over Houston is thrilled to honor Tora, Tora, Tora for their dedication and achievement in the aviation industry,” says Bill Roach, executive director of Wings Over Houston Airshow. “The Tora team sets themselves apart with their strong sense of spirit and camaraderie. We are proud they call Houston home.” The act’s excellence in the industry was recognized in 2001 with the Art Scholl Award of Showmanship, one of the two highest distinctions awarded by the International Council of Air Shows, the premier air show industry trade association. Comprised entirely of volunteers, Mark Allen, Tora Lead; Gordon Webb, Pyro Lead; and the two announcers, Ken Crites and Roger Gauert, provide the leadership to the Tora team of pilots, crew and 12 aircraft.

Wings Over Houston awards local students scholarships to pursue education in aviation Wings Over Houston Airshow recently announced its 2011 scholarship recipients. Among the recipients are James Forkner of Richmond, Richard Garcia of Spring, Michael Hughes of Dickinson and Reginald Richardson III of Houston. Jessica Miniutti and previous recipient, Julia Hall, were awarded the Emyre Barrios Robinson Memorial Scholarships at San Jacinto College. Scholarships were awarded to local outstanding college students who are pursuing an education in the fields of aviation or aerospace. “Each of this year’s recipients has demonstrated immense passion and true dedication to the aviation and aerospace,” said Steve Sehnert, chairman of the 2011 Wings Over Houston Airshow Scholarship Subcommittee. “We are pleased to present scholarships to these students and look forward to the many contributions each will make as they pursue their careers in their chosen fields.”

RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival October 21, 22 & 23 • Johnson Space Center Houston’s most exciting and entertaining outdoor family event blasts off from the NASA/Johnson Space Center October 21-23 as the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival fills the skies above Clear Lake for the 18th annual tribute to mankind’s fascination with flight. A seasonal event favorite of southeast Texas, the festival bears special significance this year as Houston celebrates three decades of the Space Shuttle program and the 50th Anniversary of the Johnson Space Center. In partnership with the City of Nassau Bay, the weekend celebration features approximately 50 giant hot air balloons piloted by the world’s most skilled aerial navigators, punctuated by daylong skydiving exhibitions, paragliders and hang-gliders, all set in a carnival atmosphere with food, arts and crafts, a midway with rides and live musical entertainment. Festival admission is just $10 per vehicle, including free onsite parking at Johnson Space Center. Saturday’s expanded NASA Open House will include Space Shuttle exhibits never before seen by the public. In addition to Astronaut training facilities and a mock-up of the ISS, new displays will reveal the next generation of vehicles currently in development. A Houston tradition, the non-profit RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival sprouted wings in 1993 and is now a hallmark event that encourages young people’s interest in math and science through the study of aeronautics. Nassau Bay, the traditional hometown for the engineers and pilots who pioneered America’s space exploration, has given partnership support in bringing the festival to an ever-wider audience of families. Gates open on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by high-energy music and entertainment, with a mass balloon glow at 8:15 p.m. The 7:30 a.m. Shuttle Rendezvous (balloon navigational competition) kicks off Saturday morning, followed by skydivers and air sport activities all day long. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED This exciting event could not be a reality without the great efforts of hundreds that volunteer every year at this event. Festival volunteers receive free admission into the festival for themselves and anyone else in their car, free parking and non-alcoholic beverages while they are working. Organizations and businesses volunteering in JSC will host an Open House during groups have a great opportunity to present themselves to the festival on Saturday, Oct. 22. the public by wearing shirts or hats that represent their organization. Fidelity Investments joins as partner of RE/MAX Ballunar Festival The RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival, Oct. 21-23, sponsored by the City of Nassau Bay welcomes Fidelity Investments as a partner in this year’s festivities at NASA Johnson Space Center. Recognized as one of the largest providers of financial services in the world, Fidelity Investments has assets under its administration of more than $3.5 trillion. The City of Nassau Bay expressed excitement and enthusiasm about the partnership. “Fidelity Investments is a leading provider of investment management, retirement planning, portfolio guidance, brokerage, benefits outsourcing and many other financial products and services,” said Sunny Fitz with the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. “Their commitment to our community is appreciated.” As a partnering sponsor, Fidelity Investments will be presenting Festival attendees with a mass ascension and flight of more than 50 full-size hot air balloons over NASA Johnson Space Center. A perennial favorite, the balloon launch has remained one of the highlights of the 17-year-old festival. The festival, which takes place Oct. 21-23, will also feature other family and education oriented fun, including Radio Disney, NASA open houses, a Salute to Public Safety and dozens of aviation and aeronautic displays.

Matheson: “Early in the morning, watch for balloon teams driving near the main JSC entrance with their trailers in tow, and follow them out to the launch site. Also, unless you're going for a silhouette, attempt to shoot with the sun at your back.” Ennis: “Instead of waiting for the balloons to reach the festival grounds, follow the balloon teams out to the launch site and take pictures of the process leading up to the launch and the launch itself.” Grim: “Understand the schedules and what is going to go on. The Saturday morning launch gives you an opportunity to photograph set ups and launches from very close. The Friday evening glow is the other great photo opportunity. Meinhardt: “Don't just think about big balloons. From a photographic point of view it can also be abstract colors, lines and shapes, it can be people, it can be action, and look at it from different angles, get up close, get down low, its a great place and a great subject to experiment with.”

On the Water 25th SAILING OF THE HARVEST MOON REGATTA Upcoming Calendar

OCTOBER 13-16 Ever wonder if any of those beautiful looking sail boats you see when you visit Seabrook or Kemah Boardwalk ever venture beyond Galveston Bay? Well they do! Some 250 yachts 30’ to 65’ head to Galveston every October on the full moon to enter the United State’s largest off shore regatta US port to US port called the Harvest Moon Regatta. Starting from Galveston late afternoon just off the Flagship hotel they sail offshore to Port Aransas. Most usually cover the 150 nautical mile non-stop course in 24 to 30 hours through the night, wind permitting. Watching the start of the HMR could be a lot of fun from Murdock’s back porch or just sitting on the seawall. Good viewing starts about 1:30 pm Thursday October 13. Even more fun is heading to Port Aransas to catch the racers heading up the Port A ship channel to the finish line. There is great spinnaker viewing all along the jetties and fishing piers as the racers give it their all to win the coveted Bacardi Cup for the overall winner. This real action can start mid morning through to late evening on Friday October 14. If you do decide to take in Port A, stay for all the entertainment starting with recording artist Kelley McGuire at 1:00 pm followed by the band Hanna’s Reef. Port Aransas is a great little island to spend your weekend fishing, shopping or just laying around on the beach. Check out the web site. www.harvestmoonregatta.com

On the Water J/BOAT FOUNDER TO ATTEND J/FEST SOUTHWEST REGATTA • OCT. 29-30 J/Boat Southwest Regatta Chairman Carl Drechsel of Lakewood Yacht Club has announced that Rodney Johnstone, founder of racing J/boats, will attend and participate in this year’s regatta slated for Sat., Oct. 29 and Sun., Oct. 30, on Galveston Bay. The Johnstone family has made an undeniable mark on the world of sailing. In addition to the 5,400 J/24s cruising the waves, there are over 7,000 more J/Boats ranging from the International J/22 to the J/65, that sailing enthusiasts have bought at prices ranging from $10,000 to $2,000,000. The story began in 1975 when Rod, then an ad salesman for the sailing trade magazine Soundings, decided to build a sailboat he had been designing since the 1960s. With $400-worth of fiberglass and wood, he built the 24’ x 9 ‘ wide RAGTIME on weekends in his 3 car garage at home in Stonington, Connecticut. During the summer of 1976, with an all family crew aboard, RAGTIME beat everything in sight.

In 1977 Rod Johnstone built a speedy 24-foot sailboat in his garage. Now, that boat (the J/24), has become the most popular recreational offshore keelboat in the world. And J/Boats now range from 22 to 66 feet in size and $10,000 to $2 million in price. The winner of the high-end, performance-oriented segment of the sailing market.

Johnstone realized he had created something special, and the story continues today.

ticipate and the regatta organizers intend to offer several exciting formats for the non One Design racers.

For the J/Fest Southwest Regatta, Scott and Terry Spurlin of J/Boats Southwest in Austin have been promoting the event throughout all of the Gulf Coast States. “In fact, we have a racing contingency driving all the way from Dillion Yacht Club in Colorado,” explained Spurlin.

The Skippers’ Meeting will be held in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club on the evening of Fri., Oct. 28, 6:39 pm for check-in, meeting, and refreshments. A pool party with live music and dinner are planned after the races on Saturday with the Awards Ceremony to take place on Sun., Oct. 30, after the races.

The focus of J/Fest Southwest Regatta is to provide a venue that is all inclusive to J/Boat owners, their family, and friends. While the racers are on the water, family and friends can enjoy the numerous activities in the Bay area using materials provided by the Bay Area Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Lakewood Race Committee Chairman Dwight Bengtson would like to thank Platinum sponsor the city of Seabrook; Silver sponsors J/Boats Southwest, Parkway Chevrolet, and J/World Annapolis. Bronze sponsors are Waterline Works, Gary Trinklein Photographs, John Lacy Photographs and Harken. Copper sponsors include Hall Spars and Riggings, North U, the Nassau Bay Hilton, Blackburn Marine Supply, West Marine, and UK Halsey.

One design fleets slated for the J/Fest Southwest Regatta are J/22, J/24, J/80, J/105 and the J/109. It will be a circuit stop for the J/24’s and the J/80’s. All J/Boats are welcome to race in the PHRF classes and in the J/Cruise class. Any J/Boat is eligible to par-

One Design Fleets Converge at HYC The Houston Yacht Club hosted 102 entries for its Second Annual Open One Design Regatta, Sept. 17-18. Ten one design classes attended this event. Ensigns, J105's, Lightnings and A Cats also participated in the open event. Approximately 300 competitors sailed in the regatta. Entries came from all over Texas and Louisiana, with an entry from Massachusetts and Canada. The outstanding HYC race management team of Fleet Captain Jack Yoes, P/C James Liston and P/C Jim Tichenor used three race courses, all outside Houston Yacht Club in upper Galveston Bay, to stage the competition. The generous sponsors for the event were KO Sailing, Mark McNamara; Kevin Severance, Kevin Severance Insurance Agency, Classic Cafe, Commodore By Baldridge,

What's in your mug? Reader submission by Amy Weaver there was Scott, at the bar, having a mug…safe, home from Iraq.

The other day my mug went missing, and it was gone for a few days. During that time, I got to thinking, people don't really understand about the Boondoggles mugs. Outsiders see us drinking from our mugs and odds are, they think we're just a bunch of drunks. There may be some truth to that, for any given mug on any given day but, the real story lies so much deeper than a pint of beer. When I thought my mug had been stolen, I was crushed, I didn't understand how someone could take something that holds so much meaning for me. That’s when I realized, perhaps people don't really understand what's in the mug.

Mug 257 holds the nights after hurricane IKE, when we couldn't stay in our condos at the Landing because they'd been structurally damaged, and we all sat around at Boons commiserating with one another about how we'd lost a piece of paradise to that damn hurricane.

What's in Mug 257? What goes into mug 257 starts with the memory of Scott, the night before he left for Iraq, when I asked him if I could use his mug while he was gone and rather than saying yes, he bought me my own, that very night, mug 257. And then he left, for the war in Iraq.

Mug 257 holds the memory of the day I lost my job after 10 years in aerospace and a damn good run with USA, because the shuttle was being retired and the industry was collapsing. Mug 257 holds me learning to throw darts, getting good at darts, spending entirely too much time throwing darts, easing up on the darts, easing up on the drinking, easing up on the mug.

Scott had introduced me to Sparky, who had introduced me to Kevin, who had introduced me to Justin. Justin was a veteran who had served honorably in our military and suffered a stroke. Justin's speech was a little off and sometimes he didn't really make sense, but his conversations with me were always heartfelt and sincere. He used to sit at the end of the bar and any time I'd come in and see him, he gave me a great big hug and a smile. Justin passed away not too long ago. I think of him every time I hold my mug in my hand.

Mug 257 holds the celebration when I got a new, even better job, almost on the heels of losing the old!

Benefit for Melvin Green

Mug 257 holds sitting at the new outdoor bar one evening, feeling very sorry for myself because my last relationship had failed, working on my computer, and having a very handsome engineer spark up a conversation with me (because he wanted to know what was in my mug). Mug 257 holds watching the Astros win…watching the Astros lose. Mug 257 holds sitting out on the porch with my dogs, eating a pizza, thinking about starting my own business, having new people introduce themselves to me because of my dogs…people who would be influential in the growth of my new business. Mug 257 holds me volunteering to take a layoff so someone else could keep their job because I wanted to start my own business and I felt the possibilities were there. Mug 257 holds many meals with friends where we raised our mugs and consoled one another about life's crazy circumstances…lost homes, lost loves, lost friends, lost lives, new jobs, new homes, new husbands and wives. So what exactly is in Mug 257? Tonight, mug 257 holds my goodbye to friends that I've come to know over the years here. I’m hanging it up here and moving to Colorado. I'm going to miss them all very much. But, life moves on and it is time for me to venture forth. What's in your mug?

Texas Hippie Connection:

“WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE” By Adam Donaghey As I walked into the Texas Hippie Connection (THC) to meet the shop’s owner, Chris "Turtle" Dickey, I was immediately entranced with the psychedelic vibe — tie-dyed shirts, vibrant colors, great music and a Macaw parrot named Zsa Zsu. Turtle, decked out in dreadlocks and a welcoming smile on his face, was getting a call on the “lava line” — a phone that looks like a lava lamp. “Texas Hippie Connection,” he answered. “The place where dreams come true.” The vibe at THC is completely different than any lounge or shop I’ve ever seen. It’s more about hanging out then moving merchandise. Turtle’s almost always there, and he’s friendly with everyone. He’s also open much later than the typical shop — until 2 a.m. on the weekends. Encouraging his patrons to just come out and hang has enabled him to co-mingle several businesses — his smoke shop downstairs, his glass gallery upstairs, his hookah lounge on the palapa patio, and brand new to the list will be beer and wine, coming by the end of the year. In his shop, customers can purchase hippie-themed clothing, functional art, scented candles, tobacco products such as water and hand pipes, bowls, grinders and rolling papers, and herbal incense. Upstairs in the glass gallery, customers can purchase custom pipes from artists from all over the country. Turtle’s collection makes THC the largest glass shop in the State of Texas. Artists on display include Zach P, Darby, Slinger, Midas, Beanz, Cowboy and Austin-based Salt, who recently visited the shop in September bringing with him some brand new, custom designs. The variety of glass is truly amazing; celebrating the Gulf Coast, some of the pipes look more like sea creatures than pipes, and one pipe actually has the Houston skyline on it. For more traditional pipes, THC also has a huge Helix collection.

THE SCENE

Turtle’s recent addition of a large palapa covering his patio has created an intimate vibe for hookah smokers, perfect for the cooler weather. Patrons can sit on couches and listen to killer tunes and smoke premium tobacco with friends for an extremely low price of $6 a bowl. Musicians such as Mama Tried, Shark Attack, Mystic Roots and Ashes of Babylon come out from time to time and perform live music. By the end of the year, customers will also be able to purchase beer and wine, making THC a true hookah bar. What really makes THC stand out, however, is the support Turtle has had from the community and the City of Seabrook. Driving down NASA Road 1, it’s hard to miss Kunu, Seabrook’s most colorful addition to the Pelican Path Project. Red-eyed Kunu dons a tie-dyed shirt covered in cannabis leaves, a pair of John Lennon shades and a dread tam. The pelican was created by local artist, Eric Klusendorf, and stands outside greeting guests as they enter THC. At the Texas Hippie Connection, patrons lounge around and relish the experience. Ultimately, Turtle’s goal has always been centered around the customer experience. “I wanted to change the experience of buying products,” said Turtle. “[THC has] a better selection; with cool people who hang out and come here for the artists — the environment.” Come hang out with Turtle, Kunu, Zsa Zsu and the rest of the gang daily, from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday; and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The Texas Hippie Connection is located at 2234 East Nasa Road 1 in Seabrook. Dial Turtle on the Lava Line at 281-957-9213 and find THC on Facebook. Peace, love and may all your dreams come true.

We Googled up the Cock-Eyed Seagull the other day and surprised to see that The Houston Press reported the place as closed. Rest assured and according to owner Mark Fryslie, the Seagull is doing fine and in fact, wrapping up a record summer. Heads up! They’re about to reopen their grill. Cool... Last month, we caught Inside Out rocking out the Seagull stage. These cats also play at Cabo, so if you’re out and about, and they’re on stage, check them out, and show them a little love. They’re good! Speaking of good... OVER THE TOP: Was the fun and generosity at the Bay Area Turning Point’s 20th Anniversary Celebration. This event, held at the League City’s Big League Dreams sports complex, checked off as a full house and the Mambo Jazz Kings were on stage. We first covered the Mambo Jazz Kings at a benefit fundraiser, so it was

no surprise seeing them there. They’ll be at Jackie’s Brickhouse this month, and we can tell you already, this will be a fun show. Al Saylor pulled off one of the best live auctions I’ve witnessed in years raising money from the widest range of supporters I’ve ever seen. I got the opportunity to chat with BATP’s founder and heard accounts about the initial years and how the community expressed BATP was not needed in the area – And hold no doubt, the early-day founders didn't listen. Cheers, and all our best to BATP!

The indoor portion of the spook house consists of over a dozen spine-chilling vignettes ranging from simply creepy to absolutely horrifying. In addition, there is plenty of gory gruesomeness to appease any splatter film fan. A macabre maze outdoors with surprises around every corner ends the tour. The wooded trail is often disorienting and definitely disturbing. Once again, the smell of cedar puts you right in the heart of horror where you will lose yourself in wicked amusement. An entire block of terror, the House of Horrors is sure to satisfy your desire for fright-filled fun. Plenty of FREE parking and $15 ticket prices are the only things that won’t scare you! If you enjoy VIP treatment, take advantage of $30 VIP tickets which includes closer parking, a golf cart ride to the VIP tent and a private entrance to avoid waiting in line. The House of Horrors is located at 3011 Hwy. 146 next door to the Gulf Coast Palapas showroom. Field parking is available off Jasper Street (across from the haunted house). the area. You can tell by watching the folks enjoying the show. Speaking of packing an able crew, we hung out with the Ezra Charles bunch at T-Bone Tom’s. His CD table was looking a bit low so if you’re short an album, better hurry and complete you collection. Our road trips are incomplete without Ezra in our player. Add him to yours!

OUR BEST KEPT SECRET: Is upon us... Autumn is here and ’tis time to head outdoors. We checked up on two of The SCENE’s larger patios, T-Bone Tom’s & Jackie’s Brickhouse finding SCENE readers galore. Both places were at perfect capacity ranging from couples, families and humungous Class Reunions. Was there any doubt? Oh yeah, the music... We caught Randy Marshall at Jackie’s Brickhouse for the Randy Marshall @ first time and enJackie’s joyed with everyBrickhouse body an evening of two stepping country wing – A good addition to the beat. Also at Jackie’s, we got to check out Madigan’s new man on bass, Adrian Washburn. We will follow up with Adrian to see if he’s of the Washburn guitar family, but can attest he’s the man for the job. While at it, we’ll have to check into Madigan @ Dave Madigan’s efJackie’s fects string, because Brickhouse I swear he sounds more EVH than EVH himself. Seriously... Can’t say enough about the Madigan team (and all the bands that do likewise) for packing one of the finest sound and lighting crews in

BRAND NEW DAY: Is a new song by Sheila Marshall, and who can’t use one? We’ve followed Sheila a couple years on The SCENE, and this time around, she blew us away sporting her new Sheila Marshall @ T-bone Tom’s look, her new band, her new gutsy bluesy sound, and packing the TBone Tom’s dance floor in nothing flat. What’s there more to like? How about having a Brand New Day. Catch Sheila at a show near you and score yourself one! WINGS OVER HOUSTON: Is around the corner, and we got to hop a ride with Lifetime Achievement in Aviation Award winners Tora, Tora, Tora’s Patrick Hutchins and the Lloyd P. Nolen. Patrick is an eight-year pilot with the group and flies with father, Charles who has been with the squadron for more than 35 years and owns a machine shop in La Marque since 1956. Word is this year’s air show has over 50 percent new content making this annual event something to look forward to. We will be there!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 57 A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER: Was on the agenda as Punk Star Industries and Big Ben Tavern teamed up with 14 bands and an afternoon complete with two stages, PPV UFC, Highway Horrors Car show, plenty of parking, plenty of good food and spirits plus a cool front to boot. The Roadhouse 146 was the first spot on the SCENE to have the Highway Horrors (Thanks, Michelle!) and these folks are a hoot! We can burn up our monthly word count on just these 14 bands so we'll make quick mention. We started with Six Gun Sound (and resonated with their song “We Know Where We Come From”), The AM Prowlers (a young Alvin band reinventing their grandparents

vinyl collection from the 50's--A “good” thing...), Pub Affair (young musically talented industrial glam rock band comes to mind), The Last Hour (not often heard but great sounding group to keep an eye out for). Fresa and A Good Job Underground (Sorry guys, I’m sure you were great but had to dash off-site to pick up a friend and missed you), I.D.R. and Erase The Virus, South and Melovine (the Astros needed middle-inning pitchers as strong as these guys), and Dykes on Bykes (my nominees for Entourage of the Year and Outrageous Show of the Year). Dev Electric and From Guts To Glory closed out the 10hour music marathon in fine form leaving Clear Lake alternative rock lovers their September to Remember. Nice job! Cheers! - Continued on Page 53

quality spirits and music. Think of how many groups you recall booked there three consecutive nights? Yup, not too many. Rat Ranch has, you were there and so were we. Good choice, folks. We had a great evening!

My apologies for this mistake and our gratitude for the out-ofbody culinary experience. Folks, if you’re at a benefit, and hear that Mr. Gates is in on the brisket, GO FOR IT!!! HOW DO THEY KEEP DOING IT?: At Dempsey’s that is. Practically every time we drop in, John Delesandri and the gang have got something totally different going on. Last month, Delesandri was having his 38th birthday celebration with Beastie Boy’s tribute band, Rhymin & Stealin on stage. Once again, another super fun night with a super crowd – Cheers to John D. and to another 38 years!

THREE YEARS AGO: When I first covered the live music SCENE, we spotted a young local band at Scout Bar nothing short of a handful to snap on stage – high energy they were. We caught up with From Guts To Glory at their CD release show last month at the Houston House of Blues along with 600+ area fans and local opening acts in-

Rock coverage – The Blaggards and The Dead Rabbits (at Union Tavern and at Dempsey’s) to be exact. Twirl up the wit and frenzy dial a couple spins and you have what is called Pirate Metal. This month, Alestorm (all the way from Scotland) came to the Scout Bar and showed us how it’s done, which is waaaaaay beyond nitty, witty and gritty and well into the zone which music lovers calls Rat Ranch @ Sherlock’s “fun,” and “fun” is good... Cheers!!! THREE’PEAT: Okay, we’ve all been to Sherlock’s over the years, and we know they’re always good for an evening of

cluding Beacons Ablaze (a fun loving young high-energy band you need to watch for), Rainchild, I.D.R., and The Last Place You Look (who, this year, got to open at the 94.5FM Buzzfest). Chatting with Jeremy, “Putting together this album was lots of fun, and we really learned a lot with our first rate producers (at I-10 Records) and A.D. at The Buzz. We’ve improved a lot,” which means, folks, hang on! Find their new album, "From Guts to Glory" on iTunes and more on www.fromgutstoglory.net. - Cont. on Page 55

Rather than watch sports or reality TV, Sam enjoys her spare time by: Roller skating, reading, or spending time with friends. Action, comedy, or romantic movies? “The last movie I saw was XMEN 3 – it was pretty good.” The self-professed romantic at heart prefers action movies above any other. Music. Music. Music? She listens to mostly pop music, but does like a variety. Nickelback was her favorite concert. In conclusion: Sam (short for Samara) wants to earn her BSN and work for UTMB. Abel @ Amadeus

Rat Ranch @ Sherlock’s

Loose Notes by Andy Eng Watching the news, the summer doldrums seems to be hitting all around the country and all around the world. Thank goodness we’ve got our live music out on the SCENE! Our schedule was light this month and each stop notable. Let’s roll... COZY HANGOUTS: We’ve several open mics on the SCENE, and this month, I want to mention the ones at Signature Bistro and Amadeus. These class venues offer sane refuge for those wanting to decompress while enjoying fine dining and conversation with friends. David Schwope features a Tuesday night Acoustic Showcase at Signature Bistro. Favoring acoustic instruments, amplification isn’t really needed at this cozy Seabrook nook and usually by the end of the evenings, patron sing-a-longs are the norm. Not exactly the kinds you have at classic Irish Pubs, but in a Texas Gulf Coast flavor with Buffett, Clapton, the Eagles (you get the slant) and every bit as fun. The evening we stopped in, Rick Valente was in the house. It’s been over a year since I’ve caught Rick and was delighted catching some of his new creations. May I recommend David’s Acoustic Showcase and Signature Bistro? SO IT’S A MONDAY: You’re a millionaire and just watched on the tube that they want to raise your taxes... Or not, it doesn’t matter because it’s a great time to do what other smart Clear Lake SCENE folks do, and head to IDR @ Big Ben's Tavern’s ‘September to Remember’ Amadeus for Monday Night Football, cool cocktails, fun conversation with friends and a close dance or three. Abel Salazar hosts this weekly Open Mic taken things up three clicks, not only with guest musicians (we caught Bob fresh from his recent tour of New York City) but also playing along for you singers without the TelePrompter. Pretty cool, eh? Got that old number you’re itching to belt out? Check with Abel at Amadeus on Monday nights –It’s likely in his repertoire.

Madigan @ Jackie's Brickhouse

FOLLOW UP & ERRATA: We spotted Tommy Dardar at Katie’s this month and followed up with how he’s doing. “Fine Thanks!,” he says, “...was able Tommy Dardar @ Katie’s to use the money from the last benefit to square things away and ready to move on to what’s next.” Nice! While hanging out and enjoying the set, I found out I goofed last issue -- Word is it was KEVIN GATES, who seasoned up that out-of-this-world melt-in-your-mouth brisket. - Continued on Page 57

Featured Music Venue:

Rock and Talk at 146 Roadhouse By Rhonda Meredith

146 Roadhouse has ample parking. In fact, they proclaim, “We are Motorsports, Classic Car and Biker Friendly!” Maybe that explains why the parking area carries on with the theme inside the venue. It’s fun to walk up and down the decorated fence and enjoy the effort put in for that extra something!

146 Roadhouse is a fun place, hands-down. The decor has a casual, festive feel with automobile-related collectibles placed everywhere! Each Friday and Saturday night, as well as Sunday late afternoon/evening, the venue has live music from some of the area’s coolest bands. Even Thursday nights are covered when DJ Trey spins the tunes! On this particular night at 146 Roadhouse, “Cloud Nine” – an alternative and classic rock band – was in total control of the large corner stage. The personal interaction between the band members and the crowd was the same from the front tables all the way to the bar as singer Ronnie Fillius milled about. Both inside and outside, the band’s performance could be heard all over the venue… That’s just another benefit at 146 Roadhouse. The main room is spacious, but yet feels very personal. Every seat is a good one. Plus, there is plenty of room to get up and dance.

Anyhow, 146 Roadhouse is a great place to stop in and unwind. Did I mention there is FREE WIFI also? Their kitchen will be opening soon, too! 146 Roadhouse is located at 3435 Highway 146 in Bacliff. For more information, call 832-864-3788 or visit their website www.146roadhouse.com or find them on Facebook!

Donnie Fillius the guitarist from Cloud Nine chimed in to say, “146 Roadhouse is the place for good friends to rock and talk!” That’s true! There are plenty of other things to do if dancing isn’t your thing. Listening to the music at 146 Roadhouse can also be done seated at the 4,000 square foot bar area that is well stocked. There is also a choice of pool tables, a foosball table, and a myriad of games like Golden Tee, Big Buck Safari, boxing, and Putt Putt. Sitting at the outdoor deck feels incredible when the Texas weather isn’t fickle. When the breeze starts after the sun goes down, it is totally therapeutic.

Fidelity Maxx’s “staple song,” however, is “Come Together” by the Beatles. “We have our own arrangement. We've had people come to the club just to hear us play that song,” Knight said. Fans have gotten to know Fidelity Maxx and definitely appreciate how down-to-Earth these performers are with them and as a band itself. Thomas Shorts Jr. has been a long time supporter of Fidelity Maxx and added, “I believe these guys put their heart and soul into their music, and it’s always a pleasure to watch them perform.” Knight meant it when he said, “We've seen each other’s children become adults. We've been through good times and bad times. We have laughed and cried together. I always tell everyone we’re more than just a band; we’re family.” It never fails, before the end of the night, or as the venue closes, you will hear someone ask with intensity as they HAVE TO know, “What was the name of that band again???” Yeah, Fidelity Maxx is that good. If you haven’t already done so, or it’s been a while, time to check them out and enjoy the music! For more information, visit Fidelity Maxx on Facebook or at www.fidelitymaxx.com.

Featured Band

FIDELITY MAXX By Rhonda Meredith Chances are if you have been around the Bay Area for any length of time, you have come across a dynamic band with a funky sound called Fidelity Maxx.

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

“Fidelity Maxx has been performing out on the lake for about 14 years. Some say we're "icons" – more like dinosaurs – because bands never last that long,” said Eddie Knight, guitarist and founder. “When I started this band in 1992, I tried to put together a group of musicians that was not only talented, but had the ego, personality and dedication to stay together.”

Saturday, October 15 SCOUT BAR

Knight said the Bay Area has been good to the band the past 14 years. “We've seen it all: Hurricanes, tornadoes, clubs changing names, clubs changing owners, new clubs opening, old clubs closing, etc. We've met a lot of good people, made a lot of friends and, unfortunately, lost a few.” The original members of Fidelity Maxx were Gerry Polk (drums), Percy Gray (bass), Roscoe Webber (keyboard/backing vocals), Regi Rollons (keyboard/vocals), Grayling "Moonie" Phillips (lead vocals) and Eddie Knight (bandleader, guitar.) Polk died in a car accident in 2005, and Phillips left the group a year ago to pursue other interests. “I hired 22 year old drummer Larry Grant in 2009, and just hired 27 year old lead vocalist, Jesse Black (lead vocals) last month states Knight. “The youth and energy of Larry and Jesse – combined with the experience and knowledge of Percy, Regi, Roscoe, and I – make for the perfect combination.”

I believe Knight is right! Fidelity Maxx is the perfect combination to get the good times started! Last month at Pier 27 Tavern, the band had everyone up and dancing pretty quickly. "Fidelity Maxx is one of the best bands to take the stage at Pier 27 Tavern!” Shun Mason Wafer, Pier 27 Tavern’s co-owner told me. “They are professional, talented, and are ALWAYS a crowd pleaser. What can I say? We absolutely love them!" Fidelity Maxx has a wide range of genres they perform. “We try and keep the music arrangement up-tempo and funky. We'll slow it down a few times so couples can "rub bellies," said Knight. (I just love the rubbing bellies quote.) He went on to say, “We're actually a funk (Cameo, Rick James, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang) band, that throws in a little classic R&B (Marvin Gaye, Temptations, Al Green), rock and roll (Lynard Skynard, Incubus, Bon Jovi), pop (Michael Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, Prince), country (Rascal Flatts, Brooks and Dunn), and whatever else we need to make the "gumbo show" hot! At some point, we'll touch you!” It’s that desire to entertain people and dedication that everyone is having a good time that makes their shows so personal. - Cont. on Page 62
