The weather in the UK may have turned for the better, we are forecast to have a whole week of sunshine which this year is totally unheard of! A few events have had to be cancelled due to the very bad weather including The Festival of History at Kelmarsh-where we woke early on the Saturday morning to a river running through the camp site and also the event at Berkeley Castle which a week before the event was quite flooded and the forecast was for more rain. I hope that re-enactors in other parts of the world are fairing better than us!

MEDEIVAL FALCONRY

Falconry was thought to have started in China 4,000 years ago, coming from the Far East, through the Middle East and Europe, finally getting into British records around the year 860AD, in the reign of King Ethelbert The Ancient art of Falconry is very much unchanged since these days.

Falconry was a means of providing food for the table and also as a sport for kings. Prey caught for the table would include Rabbit, Hare, Pheasant, Partridge and Duck. All these species are hunted today, but in medieval days Heron and Stork were also hunted, more as sport for the noble classes but would also have been eaten. They were hunted with a cast of Peregrine falcons (a cast being a pair, one male, one female) There was a hierarchy for the flying of birds of prey. In the fifteenth century Boke of St Albans on hawking, there is a list of birds of prey allotted to various ranks of medieval society:King Prince Duke Earl Baron Knight Square Lady Young Man Yeoman Priest Holy Water Clerk Knave or servant

The Eagle, The Gyr Falcon and Gyr Tiercel The Falcon gentle and Tiercel gentle (Peregrines) The Falcon of the Loch The Falcon Peregrine The Buzzard The Saker and the Sakeret The Lanner and Laneret The Merlin The Hobby The Goshawk The Sparrowhawk The Musket (male Sparrowhawk) The Kestrel

People could fly any of the birds below their status but nothing above.

From the above hierarchy list the two main birds used for hunting were the Peregrines and the Goshawk. The Goshawk became known as the cooks bird because of its ability to catch a wide range of prey in conjunction with the use of hound and ferret. The Goshawk was the bird to fly to feed your family.

Unlike the Goshawk the Falcons would only catch feather i.e. other birds in the air and not ground game Falconry furniture, i.e. the equipment used for the birds has not changed a great deal over the years. The material used for leashes and perches has altered but the design is very similar.

Bells are still used to hear where your bird is when off the fist. These bells are attached to the tail or feet of the bird using the same methods of attachment. Leather gauntlet type gloves are still the best method of hand protection when handling and flying the birds. Leather is till used for the jesses, which are the leg straps and anklets attached to the birds legs.

Modern day falconers have the added advantage of electronic telemetry for tracking the birds whilst in flight. Today, even with this aid it can take days to track and retrieve your recalcitrant bird. In medieval days, lost birds became the property of the crown. I think it fairly likely that the King and his courtiers received quite a few birds in this way!

Today all birds are captive bred. In medieval times the birds were taken as chicks from the nest or trapped as older birds to be trained for falconry purposes.

The whole art of falconry is knowing the responsive weight of your bird for food. This weight is ascertained during the training before the bird is flown free and is different for each bird. It takes a knowledge learnt over years to be able to train a bird of prey to work with you.

Each noble man would have had his own Falconer to train and work the birds with a large number of staff to help him. The birds were housed in Mews, a term used nowadays for many an attractive little housing development!

Certain phrases in our modern language have evolved from historical falconry The Prince flew the falcon gentle (female Peregrine) and was known as a Gentleman, hence the modern term today.

The ladies of the courts whilst flying their Merlin would hunt Skylarks and was probably the origin of the saying ‘larking around’ The Musket is where we got the name of the firearm Falcons wore a hood to keep them in the dark which kept them calm. The act of putting the hood on tricked the hawk into thinking it was night time. The Falconer had ‘hoodwinked’ the hawk. Another modern phrase used when fooling someone into doing something!

A bird trying to fly from its tethered perch was known to have reached the end of its tether.

How many times have you come to the end of your tether!

When a King went hawking he would have a member of his falconry staff carrying his birds.

He used a piece of equipment knows as a cadge to carry as many as six birds at a time. The cadge was a rectangular frame that the man could stand in the middle of and lift up, the birds would be sitting all around the frame on leather bindings. The bird was known to be cadging a lift. The man carrying the cadge was known as the cadger. He was not paid but could accept tips from the owners of the birds, hence he was cadging his money.

As you can see there are many fascinating phrases used widely in our modern language that are directly connected to the Ancient Art of Falconry.

The National Living History Fayre – Reborn – November 10th & 11th 2012 When I was foolish enough to let go of the reins of the National Living History Fayre at the October 2006 market, it was just beginning to show a small but reasonable profit after several years of funding it while it was running at a loss. Stand rents still started at £50 for a basic table-top space, table and chairs provided, in a floor area approximately 3m by 2.5m, so you had space to add an additional table and to get in and out or your stand easily. Aisles were a decent width so as to avoid getting too clogged or folk feeling claustrophobic. We also found AND KEPT space for an Arena, which was used for the Sword Tournament, the Corset Parade, and various other demonstrations, displays and practice sessions. It was affordable and it was fun!

Now I have been asked by some traders to re-stage the NLHF. It has also been requested that I find a venue as close as possible to TORM and to stage the event on the same weekend, as when there was a clash of dates previously (TORM moved, we didn’t!) it was beneficial to the amount of business done, as customers could easily visit both markets.

Also, if you look at the numbers of traders, there is definitely scope for another market.

TORM currently lists 116 traders, ILHF 107, (with 20 “in common”) and I have found without much difficulty 190-plus other UK re-enactment traders with a “live” internet presence (website or functioning e-mail address.) Then there are a lot of re-enactment traders on the Continent who might like to try an affordable UK market.

So there’s plenty of traders who might well be interested in a new and affordable market!

I was keen to try and find a venue where we could offer over-night camping to both traders and to (pre-booked ) customers, as this was always a bug-bear at the WEC, with folk having to go off-site to B&B, hotel, or campsite with tent or caravan at added cost. If I could find such a venue, I was also determined to keep the pitch fee / stall-fee / camping fee to as low as possible, and to offer customers free admission. Every little helps! And it would be nice to see some new traders at the markets.

I believe I have found a venue (after a couple of false starts!) that ticks all of the boxes and has sufficient space for us to expand over the years without EVER having to move. Onley Grounds Equestrian Centre, just off the A45 and M45 near Dunchurch is just 9 miles of easy roads from The Sports Connexion, and has 1,000 acres to play in, plus lots of facilities – including sufficient Indoor Arena space to be able to give every re-enactment trader in Europe a stand, and they are busy building yet more! And we have loads of additional space for camping and for parking! And FUN!!! And a new Shower Block…

I have also listened to those who find a Friday trading day problematical because of other commitments, and so we are going for just the Saturday and Sunday, but with a leisurely set up on Friday right into the evening, complete with a nice social occasion as with camping available on site for traders and for pre-booked customers, there’s no requirement to go anywhere else!

So, my chosen pricing structure for the initial market (and fixed for the following two years as well ) is as follows: Own Trading Tent £50 Indoor space £10 per sq metre (Traders to supply own tables and chairs) WITH FREE ADMISSION FOR CUSTOMERS – after all, do you pay to go to a shopping centre?

Customers can pre-book camping for £5 per adult per night (tent or in their vehicle) or £20 per night for (any number in) a caravan. No charge for children under 16. Booking Form available on request. Group discount for block bookings, of up to 50%.

Doubtless there will be some faint-hearts who will say that camping in November or March is impossible – they should talk to those traders such as Martin Cowley and Dave The Moneyer who go to the Continent for the Deelname Middeleeus Midwinterfest show just after Christmas each year, or think about Ludlow Christmas Market, or look at the photographs of the initial History Boot Camp which was in April and enjoyed snow…and we plan to provide firewood! (All fires to be in raised fireboxes, attended at all times, and have means to extinguish to hand. Roping off may be advisable during opening hours, as at any event).

We also plan to make room for a “demonstration arena” and to provide free pitches for groups wishing to have a “show-case” to highlight what they can offer to potential employers or recruits. We just need to balance numbers of campers fairly on this – after all, it would make very little sense from the point of view of paying the bills if we gave one of the larger umbrella societies a pitch and they brought their entire membership along to man it! And as at the original NLHF, we will always find room for anyone raising money for a good cause.

When the first NLHF was mooted back in 2003, loads of people were un-necessarily critical and dismissive. I think we proved that there was sufficient demand for another

market then, and I think there is demand now for an AFFORDABLE alternative in addition to the current situation. When TORM clashed with the NLHF at WEC, several traders managed to be in two places at once, and this remains an option as we don’t do “politics”.

What may be a way forward for some traders might be to take a smaller stand at TORM, thereby reducing their overheads at that market, and take a pitch at the new NLHF, where they also get the benefit of free camping - and the chance to have one hell of a social at a very attractive price! That would also mean more room at TORM for more traders, so everybody wins!!

We will also welcome TORM traders who would like to take advantage of our excellent value camping site while trading at TORM – after all, we’re just down the road and are cheaper than any other accommodation option in the region – and we’ll have Mead, and Beer!

From past experience, we will not be advertising this market to the general public, we will be concentrating on our known target audience of re-enactors, along with others involved in the “heritage industry”, and film, tv, and theatre production. Obviously, it is in the interests of traders who will be at the new NLHF to let their contacts and customers know where to find them!

Oh, and for those who don’t know from the last time around, we don’t dictate what folk have on their stands, we leave that to “market forces” to determine if it is suitable and correctly priced, and we don’t care where else folk trade, or what period they re-enact, or what sort of hats they wear, or whether they bash their hardboiled eggs at the pointy end or the less pointy end. All we ask is that they act in a professional manner, don’t spread into the aisles or their neighbour’s space, don’t try and occupy a double stand if you’ve booked a single, don’t leave ANY litter or mess behind, and if camping, please be kind to your neighbours.

Seahawk Burning

During the latter stages of the American Civil War, from 1863 to 1865, Captain Ralph Semmes of the C.S.S. Alabama terrorizes the North’s shipping and whaling industry. He tries to prevent raw materials from reaching the shores of the North, thereby helping the Southern cause while capturing and destroying Northern ships. While he is at sea, his girlfriend Maude Galway is on the run from Pinkerton agents. Because of her association with convicted spy Rose Greenhow, Maude is suspected of spying for the South along with conspiring to kill President Lincoln.

This novel is loosely based on the true story of Captain Semmes of the Confederate navy, an assassination conspiracy involving key government leaders in Washington, and the attempt made by Captain John Winslow of the U.S.S. Kearsarge to capture and destroy the Alabama.

Other real-life supporting characters include the Secretary of the Navy Gideon Wells and a leader of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman.

This is the third and final book in the trilogy chronicling the adventures of Captain Semmes and his exploits during the American Civil War. The research is well documented, with intriguing factual and fictional characters involved in a plot to assassinate President Lincoln.

Prepare to be immersed in a page-turner with end-of-chapter cliffhangers. I would recommend reading the first two novels first, primarily because of the character development of Captain Semmes and Maud, along with the supporting cast of players in this exciting spy and war novel series.

Blanche Mortimer APPEAL Some of you will be familiar with the existence of the magnificent medieval tomb of Blanche Mortimer, Lady Grandison at St Bartholomew’s Church, Much Marcle, Herefordshire.

Serious conservation work is now going on as her effigy and its surroundings were found to be suffering badly from damp. Michael Eastham, the highly respected conservator has removed her from the tomb to safety, in order to dry her out! In doing so many issues of necessary conservation have been revealed. The top of the heavy canopy has some 18c additions of small cherub heads in poor condition, and the attachments to the wall are unsafe.

Damp has also been traced to the room behind and additional work is bound to take place there.

This mid fourteenth century tomb of one of the daughters of Roger Mortimer, the first Earl of March, is indeed highly rated. The carving of the effigy is superb, with the folds of her gown crisp and clean. Lady Grandison holds a rosary in her hands, and a wimple is upon her head.

In his book 'England's Thousand Best Churches', Simon Jenkins calls Lady Grandison's effigy "an image as lovely as any bequeathed us by a medieval church ... a work of supreme craftsmanship".

The tomb is thus of immense significance to the Mortimer History Society, and indeed our Design and Textiles group are not only studying her costume, but are planning on making a copy of it for exhibition purposes, Various bodies such as the Church Monuments Society and the Diocesan Advisory Committee are fully involved in the consultations as to the remit of the conservator, and the Friends of the church are seeking to support the fund raising involved. Costs could be in the region of £40 -50,000, and some £25, 000 has been raised so far.

It would be good if the MHS can raise a contribution of at least £5000, so I send this personal appeal to all members.
