Holiday Guide 2012

New Holiday Shows Finding Mrs. Claus (12/2, Lifetime) Las Vegas isn’t the first location that comes to mind when you think of Christmas, but it’s the setting for this new holiday tale. Oscar winner Mira Sorvino (“Mighty Aphrodite”) has the title role of Santa’s spouse, who’s feeling neglected by her husband (Will Sasso, “The Three Stooges”) as the big night approaches. She decides to visit Vegas – not to gamble but to help make a Christmas wish come true for a little girl who lives there. A repentant Santa follows her there, and what happens in Vegas puts Christmas in jeopardy.

Royal Pains: Off-Season Greetings

American Giving Awards (12/8, NBC) What better time than the season of giving to honor great givers? Joel McHale (“Community”) hosts this special, which honors the United States’ most deserving charities and gives one of them a $1 million donation, with six-figure awards for the runners-up. Online votes pick the winner from five organizations representing education, human rights, health and wellness, community leadership and youth groups. Musical performances and special surprises are also on tap.

The Mistle-Tones (12/9, ABC Family) Holly (Tia Mowry), a talented young singer, is distressed to discover that a coveted position in a Christmas choir has gone to the director’s less-talented best friend (Tori Spelling). She starts her own group, the Mistle-Tones, and challenges the other ensemble to a singoff on Christmas Eve. Along the way, she gains some new friends, a new love and a new appreciation for the season in this tuneful new tale.

Help for the Holidays (12/9, Hallmark Channel) Summer Glau (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”) stars in this new fantasy as Christine, one of Santa’s elves who loves Christmas but is bored with the North Pole life. When Santa receives an urgent wish from a youngster (Mason Cook), he puts Christine on the case. The boy and his sister (Izabela Vidovic) want a real family Christmas with their parents (Eva La Rue, Dan Gauthier), who are too busy running a holiday store to pay attention to their kids. As their new nanny, Christine sets out to effect an attitude adjustment.

(12/16, USA Network) Wedding bells are ringing along with the Christmas bells in this two-hour holidaythemed episode of the hit cable drama series about a concierge doctor in New York’s exclusive Hamptons enclave. As Paige and Evan’s (Brooke D’Orsay, Paulo Costanzo) long-awaited nuptial day approaches, Evan and his brother, Hank (Mark Feuerstein), head to Las Vegas for the bachelor party. Paige and Divya (Reshma Shetty) go out of town for a bachelorette getaway of their own but wind up in Vegas themselves through a series of bizarre circumstances. Surprises await all of them in Sin City, along with the opportunity for someone to take a gamble that could change everything. Back in the Hamptons, a snowstorm threatens to scuttle Hank and Paige’s best-laid plans for a dream wedding day. Along the way, fans of the series will get a peek at the Lawson brothers’ childhoods, meet Hank’s first love, and discover how Hank’s previous romances and his relationship with his brother made him the man he is today. Emma Caulfield plays one of those women from Hank’s past, and Jill Flint returns to the role of Jill Casey, now working in Africa.

Dry Aged Standing Rib Roast With Sage au Jus COURTESY ALTON BROWN, 2012

Ingredients 1 (4 bone in) choice standing rib roast, approximately 10 pounds canola oil, to coat 2 teaspoons kosher salt freshly ground black pepper, plenty to coat the roast 1 cup red wine 1 cup water 4 leaves fresh sage

Dec. 9

Directions 1. To dry-age the roast: Place a refrigerator thermometer at the back of the bottom shelf of your refrigerator. Reduce the temperature to just below 38° F. Cover the bottom of a roasting pan with several layers of paper towels. Place the roast, bone side down, on the towels, and store— uncovered—at the back of the bottom shelf of your refrigerator. Allow the meat to age for 3 to 5 days, checking the refrigerator temperature often.*

3:00 p.m. FOOD Guy’s Disney Holiday Guy explores the holiday-themed meals and treats at Disneyland.

2. When ready to cook, remove the roast from the refrigerator and bring to room temperature for 1 hour.

Dec. 10 12:00 p.m. FOOD Paula’s Best Dishes Amy and Suzette help cook up a Christmas-time meal. 4:00 p.m. FOOD Barefoot Contessa Three canapés; Salmon tartare; sopresatta with cheese.

Dec. 11 10:00 a.m. FOOD Down Home With the Neelys Honey-baked ham; sausage and leek breakfast casserole; buttermilk biscuits with sweet cinnamon spice butter; Christmas coconut coffee cake. 10:30 a.m. FOOD Cooking for Real Spiral ham with pumpkin spice; string bean casserole salad. 1:30 p.m. FOOD 10 Dollar Dinners With Melissa D’Arabian Sausage and apple stuffed pork roast; salt roasted potatoes; green beans with grainy mustard.

3. Place a 16-inch round azalea terra cotta planter into a cold oven. Invert the planter to become a lid over the bottom of the planter. The oven should be cold to start, to avoid any cracking in the terra cotta pieces. Turn the oven to 200˚ F. 4. Rub the roast with canola oil. Remember to rub the bones with oil, as well. Once the roast is completely coated with oil, sprinkle with the kosher salt and enough freshly ground pepper to coat the surface. Place the roast over a glass bake-ware dish slightly smaller than the length of the roast. This will catch the drippings needed for the sauce. Finally, place a probe thermometer into the center of the roast and set for 118˚F. Put the roast and the glass dish onto the planter dish, cover with

4 x 2.29’’ Ad Holiday Sponsor

the terra cotta pot, and return to the oven. Roast for approximately 4-7 hours, until it reaches an internal temperature of 120˚ F. 5. Remove the planter with the roast and turn oven up to 500 degrees F. Allow the roast to rest until an internal temperature of 130˚ F is reached. Return the roast to the hot oven for 10-15 minutes or until you’ve achieved your desired crust. Remove and transfer roast to a cutting board. Rest at least 15 minutes before carving. 6. Drain off the fat from the glass pan and scrape the drippings to a 2-quart saucepan. Place the pan over low heat, add the wine and water and reduce by half. Stirring with a wooden spatula. Roll the sage leaves in between your fingers to release the flavors and aroma. Add to the sauce and cook for 1 minute. Strain and serve with the roast. 7. Carve the roast with an electric knife. Start by separating the bones from the meat by placing the roast with the bone ends facing with the meat side up. Cut, following the curve of the bone, towards the meat. Save the ribs for yourself and you’ve basically got a big, boneless roast. Remove any large layers of fat. Then start slicing from the end and make sure you don’t go less than a half-inch. *Draining Rig: Perforate the body of a large, hard plastic storage container, place the meat on the lid of said container and use the body as the lid. Place the standing rib roast upright onto a half sheet pan fitted with a cooling rack. The rack is essential for drainage. The lowest deepest part of your fridge is still ideal for stashing this rig. Yield: 10 servings

Holiday Guide 2012 Alton Brown “I usually don’t even eat (my standing rib roast). I cut the roast off the bones and save the bones for myself. I just gnaw on the bones. At Christmastime, everybody gets these big slabs of meat, and I get a pile of bones. And it’s just what I want for Christmas, a glass of red wine and a pile of bones.”

Joe Mantegna “You’re talking to an Italian guy, and I know this is going to sound strange, but it would be my Aunt Pauline’s ravioli. That’s always my go-to thing as I think about Christmas. She’s long passed now, but if I could relive that, that would be something.”

Freddy Rodriguez “There is a dish that is made around the holidays pastelles, sort of like a meat pie made with grinded plantains and seasoned with banana leaves and adobo and sofrito. And it’s timeconsuming to make, which is why they only make it during the holidays.”

Padma Lakshmi “I like stuffing. I think turkey is fine, but for me, the sides are where it’s at. I make stuffing about 4,000 different ways. I think this year I’m going to do it with Chinese sausage.”

Sandra Lee “Hmmm, white chocolate egg nog.”

The stop-motion-animated classic has snappy songs, cute characters and some life lessons.

Nobody likes a skinny Buddha either. 2. “There are more important things in life than comfort: selfrespect!” Papa deer Donner to son Rudolph, who’s sporting a fake nose, and possibly the first animated endorsement of artificial facial enhancement. 3. “It’s fascinating, you’ve no idea – molars and bicuspids and incisors … .” Hermey the Elf explains why dentistry is way better than making toys. 4. “A toy is never truly happy until it is loved by a child.” King Moonracer of the Island of Misfit Toys emphasizes the importance of fulfilling your destiny. 5. “You can’t run away from your troubles.” Sam the Snowman explains what Rudolph discovers as he grows up. 6. “The outside world is up to its ears in danger.” Preach it, Sam the Snowman. 7. “Maybe misfits have a place, too.” Santa sees the light after Hermey’s dentistry skills and Rudolph’s red nose save Christmas. Holiday Guide 2012

A ‘Christmas Story’ that never gets old returns again

BY JAY BOBBIN

The holiday season has certain entertainment staples it just wouldn’t be the holidays without. Among them: Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch … and Ralphie. The wide-eyed child who literally dreams of finding a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree – despite the famous warning, “You’ll shoot your eye out” – spends a lot of time in homes at the yuletide, thanks especially to the now-traditional 24-hour marathon TBS gives “A Christmas Story” from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day.

Peter Billingsley roasted potatoes; green beans with grainy mustard; poached pears with chocolate sauce. 4:00 p.m. FOOD Barefoot Contessa Ina creates a menu for a student entertaining blog site. HALL Lucky Christmas A woman must retrieve her winning lottery ticket from the glove compartment of her stolen car. 5:00 p.m. FAM Home Alone Accidentally left by his Paris-bound family, an 8-year-old makes mincemeat of two burglars in the house. 6:00 p.m. HALL Hitched for the Holidays A man and a woman pose as a couple to fool their respective families. 7:00 p.m. FAM The Santa Clause An adman takes over for the bearded, big-bellied fellow after a rooftop mishap on Christmas Eve. 8:00 p.m. WRIC Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town A mailman (the voice of Fred Astaire) explains why Santa has whiskers, lives at the North Pole and brings presents once a year. Animated.

The Jean Shepherd-inspired 1983 comedy made a young star of Peter Billingsley, who’s since become quite active behind the cameras. He often teams with close friend Vince Vaughn, having been the director of the movie “Couples Retreat” and an executive producer of such films as “Four Christmases” and the TBS sitcom “Sullivan & Son,” which returns next year for Season 2. AMC Miracle on 34th Street An adwoman’s lawyer boyfriend tries to prove that Macy’s Santa Claus is the real thing. Even with all his recent activity, the now-41-year-old Billingsley maintains a warm spot in his heart for “A Christmas Story,” as do so many others. “There’s a very loyal fan base for that movie,” he acknowledges. “Those who like it know it and quote it, and it’s a part of the family tradition of Christmas for them. And we have not infringed on the reputation, or their enjoyment, of that film.” Billingsley tends to tune in himself at some point during the TBS marathon. “First of all, I apologize for being in people’s houses for 24 hours,” he says. “Now having ‘Sullivan & Son’ on the network, I feel like I’ve already been in the TBS family for as long as the marathon of ‘A Christmas Story’ has been going, so it’s nice to be doing that job with them.

Olive, the Other Reindeer, an overlooked holiday hero BY JACQUELINE CUTLER

It may seem hard to believe, but it’s been 13 years since “Olive, the Other Reindeer” premiered on Fox. Drew Barrymore, who voiced the sweet Jack Russell terrier, must have truly loved her character since she named her daughter Olive. Now most people assume this was just another Christmas cartoon, with familiar voices – Ed Asner as Santa, Dan Castellaneta as the villainous postman and Peter MacNicol as Fido, Olive’s pet flea – but there’s more to the story. After flying around the world that Christmas Eve, helping Santa and the real reindeer deliver

presents, Olive realized she had a true gift, one of imagination, faith and the sweet personality to persuade others to help her. She recently stopped by Zap2it’s offices, and admittedly we didn’t recognize her instantly, being all huge and orange.

JC: What’s with the gourd?

JC: Did you trade in the antlers for bunny ears?

Olive: I am the Other Great Pumpkin. You guys have crazy early deadlines.

Olive: Nope, just used a lot of hair spray, but I did need a fake fluffy tail.

She plays an insurance investigator out to catch the veteran thief he portrays, resulting in a literal high-wire act for them between Kuala Lumpur skyscrapers on New Year’s Eve.

Midseason Series Premieres Golden Boy (CBS)

The Following

(Fox) Now that Kyra Sedgwick has ended her Emmy-winning run in TNT’s “The Closer,” hubby Kevin Bacon gets to slap on a badge for this terrifying new series in which he stars as Ryan Hardy, a former FBI agent who burned out pursuing and capturing handsome serial killer Joe Carroll (British actor James Purefoy, “Rome”), who murdered 14 students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Ryan’s life in seclusion is shattered when Carroll escapes from death row and embarks on a new slaughter spree, with a chilling new wrinkle: He has managed to form a cult made up of other serial killers from around the country. Expect some sleepless nights courtesy of “Scream” creator Kevin Williamson. HALL The Dog Who Saved Christmas A crafty canine jumps to the rescue when two bumbling thieves target his master’s home during the holidays. 2:30 p.m. HBO New Year’s Eve Intertwining stories promise love, hope, forgiveness, second chances and more for a number of New Yorkers on the celebrated night. 4:00 p.m. HALL A Christmas Wedding Tail When two dogs fall in love, their respective owners find romance with each other. 6:00 p.m. HALL Naughty or Nice A woman uses a special book from Santa Claus to expose those behaving badly. 7:00 p.m. WCVE The Lawrence Welk Show Holiday nostalgia includes a salute to the Rose Bowl and Rose Parade. Songs include “Moonlight and Roses,” “Before the Parade Passes By” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”

This promising new entry from executive producer Greg Berlanti (“Brothers and Sisters”) follows the fortunes of Walter William Clark Jr. (Brit newcomer Theo James) as he charts a meteoric rise from ambitious beat cop to the youngest police commissioner in the history of New York. Alas, as so often happens in these situations, he pays a very steep personal and professional cost for this success. He also receives a notable lack of support from the other detectives in his department. Although Clark’s ambition keeps him keenly focused on his demanding job, at home he is equally invested in acting as the sole support and caregiver of his rebellious teenage sister.

Red Widow (ABC) Based on a hit Dutch drama, this new series stars Australian actress Radha Mitchell as Marta Walraven, a resolute widowed mother who takes on both the FBI and the mob to uncover the truth after her husband is brutally murdered. Executive producer Melissa Rosenberg also wrote the “Twilight” movies. Uh-oh.

Hannibal (NBC) A prequel to the events in “Silence of the Lambs,” “Hannibal” follows criminal profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) as he pursues a serial killer for the FBI. His quest leads him to Dr. Hannibal Lecter (electrifying Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen), one of the most brilliant psychiatric minds in America, who teams up with Will. Here’s the hook: While we in the audience know that Dr. Lecter is a chilling psychopath in his own right, in the world of this series, Will and the other characters have no idea of Hannibal’s dark side. The presence of the two very strong co-leads makes this one of the midseason’s most provocative entries.

8:00 p.m. HALL It’s Christmas, Carol! The ghost of her former boss shows a ruthless CEO her past, present and future. HALL Santa Jr A public defender tries to help Saint Nick’s son after he is accused of stealing Christmas presents.

DECEMBER 30 8:00 a.m. HALL Santa Jr A public defender tries to help Saint Nick’s son after he is accused of stealing Christmas presents. 10:00 a.m. HALL Naughty or Nice A woman uses a special book from Santa Claus to expose those behaving badly. 12:00 p.m. HALL The Christmas Pageant An overbearing theater director gets a new outlook on life when she takes a small-town gig.

2:00 p.m. HALL Christmas Song Romance blossoms between two music teachers who compete for the same job. 4:00 p.m. WRIC Rudolph’s Shiny New Year Rudolph the reindeer comes to the rescue when an evil bird kidnaps the New Year baby. Voices of Red Skelton, Frank Gorshin, Morey Amsterdam. HALL The Santa Incident A family helps Santa Claus after the U.S. government shoots down his sleigh. 6:00 p.m. HALL Hitched for the Holidays A man and a woman pose as a couple to fool their respective families. 10:00 p.m. HALL The Christmas Heart Neighbors unite to help a boy who desperately needs a heart transplant. TBN King of Kings Orson Welles narrates the story of Jesus including the Sermon on the Mount, the Last Supper, the Passion and the Resurrection.

Do No Harm (NBC) Steven Pasquale seems hellbent on making you forget he played a lovable himbo on “Rescue Me.” This medical chiller, which casts him as both a gifted neurosurgeon and his psychopathic Mr. Hyde-like alter ego, just might do the trick.

DECEMBER 31 11:00 a.m. HBO New Year’s Eve Intertwining stories promise love, hope, forgiveness, second chances and more for a number of New Yorkers on the celebrated night. 8:00 p.m. WCVE Live From Lincoln Center The annual New Year’s Eve concert at Lincoln Center celebrates the life and work of Marvin Hamlisch. 9:00 p.m. HBO New Year’s Eve Intertwining stories promise love, hope, forgiveness, second chances and more for a number of New Yorkers on the celebrated night. 10:00 p.m. WRIC Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2013 A bicoastal celebration counts down to midnight and features special performances.
