It's Wine Season You picked a great time to visit Prague if you're a fan of wine. It's the celebration of the wine harvest this month, or Vinobraní, with celebrations happening through the month. The season also yields Burčák, the young partially fermented wine. In the Vinohrady neighborhood which loves wine (obvious just by namesake), there's two great festivals. Jiřího z Poděbrad Square (September 1314), when the annual harvest festival of Vinohrady will offer especially wines from smaller vineyards throughout Bohemia and Moravia. Later in the month is Havlíčkovy Sady (Grébovka, September 21) which features numerous workshops, theatre performances for kids, and live music. We love Grébovka by the way - a large city park which actually features it's own vineyard. Last of all, if you're looking for something a bit closer to the center, then check out the wine festival at Prague Castle Gardens (September 14-15). The festival celebrates the annual wine season with plenty of vino, folk dances, and educational workshops for children with the castle as a backdrop. If you're more the beer and burger kind of guy, don't worry - we've got your covered. Jack Daniels presents Burgerfest on September 7th and 8th. Electric push scooters just aren’t cool, unless you’re a six year old. They’re also not efficient or much fun on cobblestone streets, which leads many riders to end up where they’re not supposed to be - on the sidewalk. Then people really hate you. We avoid.

Rekola bikes aren’t electric powered, but we love them for two reasons. 1) It’s a Local company and 2) the baskets on the front are really handy for carrying stuff. They’re also the least expensive of the three.

The path to Prague Castle isn’t all golden. It’s full of tourist traps, restaurants that over-charge, and not-so-real experiences. Here's our recommendation for restaurants and tourist souvenir shops along the Golden Way from Chalres Bridge to the Castle.

Kuchyň

Malostranská beseda Roesel – Beer & Cake

It’s hard to argue with beer and cake, and now that Roesel has added a dinner menu, too, there’s something waiting for you anytime of day. The beer is local – one standard and three rotating taps, plus bottles – the cakes are delicious and a BBQ-inspired dinner menu tastes great, especially when enjoyed in their courtyard that’s effectively a cozy nook to escape from the hustle and bustle of the street outside. Bohemia Bagel

With fresh bagels starting at 24kc, Bohemia Bagel is proof that there’s great value for good food to be found even in the most touristy areas. Tucked away on one of the first side streets when you cross the Charles Bridge to the west, Bohemia was one of the first post-communist expat businesses to open in Prague. Breakfast food is served all day, and because it’s hidden away a bit, it’s a pleasantly quiet escape from chaos. A great place to get in the shade for awhile, Restaurace Malostranská beseda has a little something of everything. The inside portion is split into a pub on one side and a cafe on the other, but most of the action is out on the sidewalk, where a couple dozen tables are always teeming with action. As an official Pilsner Urquell restaurant, the beer is great, and the food is a Czech meal that everyone needs at least once. Designum Cafe

A small cafe right next to the entrance to the Golden Key Hotel, Cafe Designum is a gem especially when considering what most people expect from a coffee shop that’s effectively in a hotel lobby. With illy coffee, homemade pastries and free Wi-Fi, it’s the perfect place to rest your feet for awhile. Like what you’re eating? All the treats are in a cookbook – Baked with Love – that’s available for sale and makes a great keepsake or gift. A statue of T.G. Masaryk, Czechoslovakia’s first president, practically stands guard over the double red doors of Kuchyň’s main entrance on the Prague Castle grounds. Behind those doors, or up the stairs from the entrance on Ke Hradu, is an open kitchen concept that should be on anyone’s Prague short list. Go for the evening feast and let the aromas emanating from the chef’s pots guide you to the traditional Czech dish of your dreams, all while people watching near the castle or overlooking the city. Vegan’s Prague

It’s a good thing that Vegan’s Prague serves the (mostly) health conscious, because three flights of winding stairs must be passed to get up to the restaurant. But once you pass the test, deliciousness awaits. Vegan’s offers their version of some Czech favorites, including potato goulash and a bean-based svíčková, as well as some traditional vegetarian dishes. hOST Restaurant

Hidden halfway down an alleyway staircase in between Loretánská and Úvoz streets, hOST Restaurant might require a little searching to find. The effort is worth it. The small space (about 36 seats) offers an intimate vibe with beautiful views over the city through a row of open windows behind booth seats. A daily lunch special offers some good value on the menu, and save the beer drinking for elsewhere because this venue is meant for wine and cocktails. Schody Home Bar

Located between the fifth and sixth set of stairs on Zámecké schody, Schody Home Bar is a great place to fuel up for the rest of your walk up to the castle. With a gold lion presiding over its door — if the door’s closed just knock to be let in — Schody offers some standard drinks at its window service, but the real show is inside. Just tell the bartender a couple general things that you want and watch him whip up a bespoke cocktail that’s better than you imagined. Orel & Friends

When searching for a location to sell Czech handmade products, owner Stéphane Corbet was so excited about what he picked that he incorporated it into the business. Located in the House of the Red Eagle along Nerudova street, Orel & Friends – Orel means eagle in Czech – sells unique, practical gifts like ceramics, journals and children’s toys. The shop’s red eagle logo is another nod to its historical location, which was originally a Gothic house from the early 15th century. Address: Nerudova 207/6, 118 00 Malá Strana Recommendation: Go in and learn more about Stéphane’s photo project about the Czech hiking trail markers

Pivo & Basilico

Tucked away right at the bottom of Nerudova Street, Pivo & Basilico serves up an unlikely menu of both traditional Czech and Italian classics. Decent prices (especially considering the pasta is handmade) and a family friendly atmosphere. Zámecká 203/2, 118 00 Malá Strana Recommendation: Anything from the handmade pasta menu. Our favorite is pesto stracciatella.

Local Artists

Jo’s Bar & Restaurant

Jo’s has been a mainstay for several years, and with good reason. A few steps away from St. Nicholas Church and the Liechtenstein Palace, Jo’s is an excellent place to sit at a sidewalk table and watch the day go by. The food is substantial and affordable, anchored by a build-to-order burger option as well as some standard Czech favorites, and the signature cocktails are worth a visit alone.

As the name suggests, this souvenir shop with five locations relies on work from local artists to provide keepsakes with a story behind them. You can find some traditional gifts – Alfons Mucha postcards or Krtek dolls – but there’s also a bounty of locally produced pocket watches, jewelry and children’s toys. Their newest location, opened in June just inside the castle gates, is focused on handmade pottery and offers the chance to take home a special souvenir. Praguetique

Want a magnet, postcard or poster but tired of the same thing that you’re seeing at every other shop? This is your place, because each design collection — like Riverside, Castle and Panorama — was created by a different young, local artists and the images are displayed in a variety of ways on posters, T-shirts and knick-knacks like magnaets and postcards. Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1 Recently opened bespoke cocktail bar and sister to one of our favorite cocktail places, Parlour. Located right on the stairs (schody) leading to the Prague Castle, it's hard to find but well worth the search. Once you're inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he'll fix up your dream cocktail. No website, no number - it's a cozy hidden secret and they're trying to keep it that way.

Burgerfest 2019

Europe's largest hamburger festival returns Burgerfest, the largest burger festival in Europe, returns to Výstaviště Holešovice on September 7th and 8th. The two-days unique food-cultural festival was founded in 2012 and presents the culinary art of selected restaurants not only from Prague, but from the whole Czech Republic and from abroad. Also for the eighth year, Burgerfest joins forces with Jack Daniel's since everyone knows traditional American barbecue calls for traditional American whiskey. Burgers lovers can enjoy a quality drink at the Jack Daniel's truck, choosing between classic, honey or cinnamon flavor. Because barbecue is not only about great food and drinks, but also about entertainment, there will be interesting attractions waiting for visitors, such as a chillout zone, table football, and temporary tattoo artists. The opening ceremony will be held by the baby punk rock band Kašpárek V Rohlíku, and the lineup gets exciting as names such as Lake Malawi, the Czech representitives at the Eurovision 2019, will be performing during the festival. "I'm very excited to present this edition of the festival", says Zdeněk Střížek from Bejzment. "We started with six restaurants in about 80 square meters eight years ago, today we have a space of 10000 square meters and more than 50 restaurants and food trucks participating to the event", he continues, "there are people coming from all over Europe to see how we do it in Prague, it's incredible". In today's busy times burgers have become a symbol of fast and often not very high quality fast food. But Burgerfest's mission is to prove that even a traditional American food like burger has its place in gastronomy of a certain level. Visitors can look forward to burgers by George Prime Burger, Black Dog, Take Eat EZ, and Tommy’s food truck .And what would a burger be without beer, especially here in the Czech Republic. Burgerfest's main partner is Budějovický Budvar who brings beer from micro breweries such as Unětický Pivovar, Permon or Nachmelená opice. The biggest event of the weekend for meat lovers is certain to be the BBQ contest on Saturday evening, held by KCBS, the Kansas City Barbeque Society, a competitive cooking organization founded in 1985 by Carolyn and Gary Wells, and Rick Welch. It is the largest competitive barbecue organization in the world. Each year, KCBS holds more than 500 competitions across the world and has over 20,000 members that consist of Certified BBQ Judges (CBJ's), cook teams, contest reps, contest organizers and all around lovers of great food and community. Hungry visitors can look out for chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder or "Boston Butt" and, of course beef brisket cooked by teams from

Hungary, Austria, Germany, and Czech Republic (with our hometown favorites including Sale&Pepe or Bohemian BBQ). Of course the winners are chosen by the festival fans. It's possible to vote your favorite restaurant and burger through the website of the festival once per day buti f you can't make it, the competitions will also be live streamed on the website and on the official Facebook page of the event, including the opening ceremony and the cooking shows. The festival isn't just limited to food and drinks, as workshops and demonstrations, shows, and entertainment round out the weekend. Foodie and BBQ guru Ted Reader, from Toronto, Canada, is also making an appearance. In 2010, Reader attempted to set a world record for cooking the largest hamburger and has also gained fame for his cookbooks. Another host in attendance will be blogger and influencer Burger Boss, from Verona, Italy an institution for all burger lovers. "Game of Thrones" fans will be surprised by the live show "Game of Burgers", where artists playing with ice and fire will battle for the throne. Eager for some more adrenaline? The Hummer simulator will take adult visitors to a bumpy off road ride, while children can ride a miniature size of the iconic utility vehicle. And with the support of the American Embassy, sport lovers can enjoy playing

American football or learn something new about baseball. Burgerfest thinks about young visitors as well: at the children zone offered by Primáček, kids can enjoy a good variety of activities, while families can learn how to prepare mozzarella with Antonio Manieri or enjoy stand up comedy by the comedy troupe from Na Stojáka. Burgerfest also gives back to the community. This year it will support the foundation Women for Women with projects that will provide lunch for less lucky kids and programs that will support young chefs. Additionally, Burgerfest is thinking ecologically by choosing reusable cups instead of plastic throughout the whole festival this year. Tickets can be bought on presale until the 31st of August on GoOut or on the Burgerfest website with different options: one day entrance is for 100 CZK, two days is 200 CZK per person. Gallery 44 - Pairing Art with Food

For the proud owner of Gallery 44 in Old Town (who wished to remain anonymous), artistic expression at the dining table is just as important as the art that adorns the walls of the restaurant. Here, guests can enjoy culinary delights while taking in thirteen pieces from the famous DSC art gallery, whose roster of artists includes David Černý, Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Jakub Matuška aka Masker and Milan Houser, among others. “It’s dinner literally in an art gallery,” he says. The space’s history prior to its life as a restaurant served as the restaurant’s inspiration. Among the previous owners is Karl Calvi, who was the first to use the building as an art gallery in the late 1600s for his own private collection, which the restaurant is still known for today. “I wanted to create something more than a restaurant. A venue to be remembered for more than just beautiful cuisine”. Creativity extends from the gallery walls into

the kitchen. Like the rotating art exhibitions, Gallery 44 also alternates new VIP guest chefs each quarter who serve up dishes inspired by their local region as well as give their take on Czech classics. During their three-month tenure, these masters craft an à la carte menu, as well as a tasting menu with wine pairing. This quarter features Japanese chef Ohno Takehiro, who specializes in a beautiful fusion of South American and Japanese cuisine. Takehiro’s culinary flair has taken him around the globe, from Japan to Spain to Argentina. He is known for blending traditional styles from his adopted homeland of Argentina, together with some magic from his beloved country of birth. His eclectic background has earned him international television spots and a gourmet TV show. Art and food aside, the space itself is stunning. Its subterranean entrance with Romanesque features leads past an open kitchen and into the dining area. The building, one of Prague’s oldest, showcases 800 years of Czech history, complete with beautiful finishes, heavy tables and chairs, and a playful use of light.

The restaurant is hidden under one of Prague’s busiest tourist paths. Located at Karlova 44, Gallery 44 is below the popular Fat Cat Pub and Brewery, where locals and tourists alike go for locally brewed craft beer. Unlike its upstairs neighbor, Gallery 44 is not a restaurant for crowds. It only allows seating for 44 people, offering an intimate experience with close attention to detail. Just as our beautiful Wagyu beef with Yakiniku sauce arrives, the owner nods contentedly and tells me “Gallery 44 is more like a museum that curates delicious food and wine to pair perfectly with select pieces of contemporary art. It is unique, always different, but always exceptional.” Gallery 44 will also be co-hosting the iconic Dinner in the Sky event in September, where the first VIP guest chef, Manel Lino from Portugal, will be conjuring up his wizardry some 50 meters above the ground.
