FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF MARYLAND

It all began many, many years ago when numerous efforts towards establishing a Baptist Church for Colored People seemed an impossibility. Since around 1800, Blacks had prayed and struggled, hoping that laws and customs would change so that their dreams of freedom would become a reality. Slavery continued to prevail and public opinion was unfavorable to their separate organization. However, many Blacks were members of the First (White) Church. Now, “God moves in Mysterious ways, His wonders to perform”, and so in His great wisdom ‘twas in the midst of this era that the inevitable happened. William Crane, one of the greatest men that ever lived in Maryland, a White leather merchant from Virginia, had long been interested in missionary work among Negroes. He encouraged his dear friend, Moses C. Clayton, to come to Baltimore to work as a missionary among the Black Baptists. Hence, in the year 1834, Moses C. Clayton came to Baltimore to begin his first missionary work. Noting that there was no place of worship where his people could come together in adoration and praise of His Holy Name, he used the parlor of his Mullikin Street home. Here, a Sunday School was organized. ln attendance were three children, two of whom were his own. ‘Twas late in the summer when he began. Soon thereafter, Mr. Clayton continued his Sunday School efforts in a building given to him rent free by its owner, Mr. Sterling. Mr. Clayton had learned to read, write, and speak fluently, thus he began his teaching and preaching at once. The White Baptist Clergy ordained Mr. Clayton in 1835. 0n February 20, 1836, The Sunday School was organized into “The First Colored Peoples’ Church (of Maryland) in Baltimore City” with the Reverend Moses C. Clayton as pastor. Among those who assisted in the ordination and organization were Reverend S. P. Hill of The First Church, John Healey of the Second Church and the Reverend G. Adams of the Calvert Street Church, which was later called the Hill Street Church. 0n February 20, 1837, the church applied for a Charter of lncorporation, which was recorded in the Court House of Baltimore on March

20,1837. ln March of 1841, it was admitted to the Maryland Baptist Union Association. The Association provided much counseling and guidance to the new church as it progressed. They soon built a small edifice on Lewis Street between Orleans and Mulligan Streets which they shortly outgrew. ln 1849, Reverend Clayton resigned at the age of 66. The Reverend John Carey was called. Realizing economic difficulties, the Lewis Street edifice was sold for debts incurred. lnternal difficulties resulting from this, divided the church and the Reverend Carey left in 1852 with about twenty-six members and formed the Union Baptist Church. This action led the church to recall Reverend Clayton, who remained until his death on April 3,1861 at the age of 78. His remains were buried in the Laurel Cemetery. A succession of ministers served from 1861 to 1865. They wereReverends John Whyne, Thomas Rheams and James Underdue. ln 1865, Reverend Lewis Hicks became pastor. With the aid of Rev. John Berg, Reverend Hicks succeeded in collecting enough money to build a church. ln 1880 under the leadership of Rev. JC Allen and through the aid of the Church Expansion Society, the new church was completed at a cost of $16,500. 0n the last Sunday in January in 1881, the congregation left the old building at Thompson and Young Streets to occupy their new church. The Mother Church thus began to take its place as a leader among the Baptists. Many ministers have brought profitable experiences and playedprominent parts in continued progress of The First Baptist Church. They have been: Reverends Albert Josiah Green, 1920-1924; William H. Young, 19281935; Matthews T. Waters, 1935-1939; Andrew D. Nance, 1939-1942; Vernion T. Williams, 1943-1962; Gus Roman, 1963-1967; Walter Parish, 1967-1969; Baxter L. Matthews, 1970-1972 (lnterim Pastor and Pastor Emeritus of Union Baptist Church); Leroy Fitts, 19722009 (Pastor Emeritus); Theodore Anthony, 2009-2013 (lnterim Pastor). 0n December 2, 2012 Pastor Craig Harcum answered the call to become Senior Pastor. We transitioned into 2013 Celebrating Moving Forward and during 2016 we will pause to commemorate our founding.

Think On These Things By Grace J. Wingo

Don’t Move Until You See It

Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes! I Samuel 12:16 (NIV) In the movie, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Max is playing his opponent in the big championship game. He has the path to win the game, but doesn’t know

the move to make. His mentor’s voice is in his head saying, “Don’t move until you see it.” He meant don’t move a piece until you see how it will play out.

Max’s mentor was teaching him a life lesson. Until you see the move, and its advantages, until it is clear as day, don’t move. Stay put.

God is ahead of you clearing the path, making the crooked things straight and

the rough places smooth. If you move before God shows you the way or the

steps to take, you may miss a step, take a wrong turn, bump into something or someone, or make a costly mistake. You might miss your help.

After this last big blizzard, my Mom walked out of her apartment after it had just snowed and there was ice everywhere on the sidewalks. She just stood there for a while looking for a clear path and waiting. She could see the path

to the parking lot, but couldn’t see how to move on the icy walkway. And

then she saw one of the maintenance people and called him over to help her. She didn’t move until she saw it.

This is an excellent approach to life. Whatever you are trying to do, whatever you are waiting for, whatever you are looking for, don’t move until you see it. Don’t move until you can see the path God has laid out for you. You will

know it when you see it. And it will be in alignment with your purpose in life. It will be crystal clear.

THE CHURCH TEA

THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. 1 Samuel 8:19-20 The upcoming 2016 presidential election is unprecedented … but is it really unexpected? While many are flabbergasted and amazed how such shenanigans are actually taking place in the “greatest” country in the world, think about it. For the last eight years our current president has faced opposition and disrespect like no other. And local communities, like Baltimore, have experienced resent uprisings that stem from bottled up frustrations. People are frustrated at being frustrated, which not surprisingly has resulted in an “us against them” mentality. It is citizens against authority – government and police. It is citizens against religions and races. So, why wouldn’t we turn to those who echo such sentiments? The helpless feeling of despair in our nation has caused us to misappropriate our God given power while claiming that our problem is everyone else’s fault but our own. Yes, we have ample power to make change – as demonstrated by the riots and now the vote. It is the voice of the people! But we must first take responsibility for our fears in order to conquer them. There has been a blatant disregard for the protocol associated with running for the presidential office. The political process has successfully driven a wedge into the hearts of blue collar men & woman or maybe it just revealed what was already brewing. Yes, there have been times when even I thought that foreigners were granted too many benefits that should have gone to American citizens. Especially since as a self-employed person, over the years it has been a struggle to make payroll and provide health care coverage. In fact there

were times that my family went without coverage to make the payroll and cover a host of other taxes and fees that make running a small business difficult. But I never knew you could purchase the dignity and respect of the American people! Quick fixes are not always the best solutions. And we must rise above irrational actions. In the book of 1 Samuel, the people were fed up with the current power structure and wanted new leadership. Despite Samuel’s warnings, in haste they opted for a king, to be like other nations. “…’No, we want a king to rule over us’--even though the LORD your God was your king.” (1 Sam 12:12) No, we are not and must not be like other nations. We are one nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Until next time be sure to listen to me and Rev. Wingo on WOLB 1010AM Friday’s from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we discuss community issues and events in the faith based communities. Email me: annwilliams@ramovers.com
