Telling the best stories

Spring 2015

Welcome This season is full of favourites. We welcome back the Reduced Shakespeare Company after last year’s sell-out production. There’s lots of family favourites too, as we present four adaptations of children’s classics: Dr Seuss’ The Cat in The Hat; Julia Donaldson’s The Snail and The Whale; my favourite book when I was growing up Nicobobinus by Terry Jones (Monty Python);

Finally, I’m very pleased to announce our new Live Stream programme (with thanks to Hedge End, West End and Botley Local Area Committee), screening live performances from The National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company direct to Hedge End. Let us know your favourite by tweeting us @theberrytheatre. We look forward to welcoming you this spring.

and The Berry Youth Theatre will present their own sparkling adaptation of Roald Dahl’s James and The Giant Peach. If any of these literary

REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY® in

The Complete History Of Comedy (abridged) Written and Directed by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor

They’ve skewered history, the Bible and the world’s most celebrated playwright, now the Reduced Shakespeare Company tackles the subject it was born to reduce. Following a hugely successful, critically acclaimed season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2014 the Reduced Shakespeare Company will set out to reduce the UK to tears of laughter in spring 2015. Tickets to The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) are far more affordable than tickets to an amusement park, but you’ll come away with the same feeling of nausea and motion sickness. From the high-brow to the low and everything in-between, the bad boys of abridgment leave no joke untold as they deconstruct the entire history of comedy in 90 rollicking minutes.

Royal Shakespeare Company Live

Royal Shakespeare Company Live are screening productions live from Shakespeare’s home town. This season we are delighted to live screen Love’s Labour’s Lost and Love’s Labour’s Won at The Berry Theatre.

Wednesday 11th February 7pm

Wednesday 4th March 7pm

Summer 1914. In order to dedicate themselves to a life of study, the King and his friends take an oath to avoid the company of women for three years. No sooner have they made their pledge than the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive, presenting them with a severe test of resolve. Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow, mischievously suggesting that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic endeavours.

Autumn 1918. A group of soldiers return from the trenches. The world-weary Benedick and his friend Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memories of conflict give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship. Christopher Luscombe directs the second of Shakespeare’s matching pair of comedies, better known as Much Ado About Nothing.
