Fun and games for local children TAMMY PETERSEN

HUNGER was non-existent for the children of Hanover Park this holiday as Community Workers for the People packed out their 25-litre pots and got things cooking for the local youngsters. More than 300 children spent hours working up an appetite and filling their tiny tummies with a hearty lunch as the holiday programme offered fun and games on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Elizabeth Bantom, who is leading the project, says this is the second year in which the programme is being rolled out. “We just decided that we didn’t want to see our children sitting idle and getting up to nonsense. We wanted to see them active, making new friends and receiving

proper nourishment instead of having nothing to do.” This year the New Apostolic Church in Hanover Park Avenue hosted the fun, and children from all over the suburb were attracted to the festivities. “The kids had a ball of a time. They were laughing and playing around without a care in the worked. It was a lovely thing to see.” And the food? “The children were treated to different foods every day of the week. This ranged from cooked meals to soup, sandwiches and fruit. They ate everything!” she says with a laugh. Those who still want to join in on the fun can visit the church today and Thursday from 10:00 till 14:00.
