On Sunday, May 6, beginning at 3 p.m., Hartsville families can experience Miss Nelson Has a Field Day, the sappy sequel to Miss Nelson is Missing, performed by the Columbia Children’s Theatre at the Center Theater located at 212 N 5th St in Downtown Hartsville. The Smedley Tornadoes have not only never won a football game, they have never scored a single point! Coach Armstrong goes

bonkers and Miss Nelson decides to help out. She enlists Coach Viola Swamp to whip the team into shape and save the day! “Frolicking football players, a perky cheerleader, a hilarious spatula-wielding cafeteria lady, and an electrifying Viola Swamp, who transforms from the sweetfaced Miss Nelson to the dreaded coach, all play to the appreciative giggles of local schoolkids… The carefully

choreographed slow motion finale is as grittily elegant as anything on ‘Monday Night Football.’” The Washington Post Presented by sponsorship from the City of Hartsville and Novolex, tickets are on sale starting at $10 for ages 12 and older and $8 for ages 3 to 11. Children under the age of 2 will gain free admittance. Tickets can be purchased online at thecentertheater.com, in per-

Recruiters from South Carolina’s public school districts hope to fill their current and anticipated teacher vacancies at this year’s South Carolina Teacher Expo. The Expo, a one-day teacher job fair sponsored by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA), will be held on Friday, May 18, at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds in Columbia. The Expo attracts jobseekers from across the state and nation and offers them an opportunity to network with recruiters from South Carolina’s public school districts. The recruiters look for outstanding candidates to fill teaching vacancies in a variety of subject areas and grade levels. The Expo is one part of an array of programs and serv-

ices offered by CERRA designed to improve teacher recruitment, retention, and advancement in South Carolina. CERRA’s Supply and Demand Report, released in January, found that the state’s teacher shortage is continuing to grow. According to the report, about 6,700 teachers did not return to their classrooms this year. At the same time, less than 1,700 students completed a teacher education program in the state. This has left many districts scrambling to find quality candidates to fill the holes. Many of the vacancies exist in critical subject areas such as special education, mathematics, and science. Participation in the Expo is limited to teachers, recent graduates of teacher education programs, and individu-

als who have met admission criteria for an approved alternative certification program in South Carolina.

For more details and registration information, visit www.cerra.org/teacherexpo.html.

Did you know? According to the American Heart Association, half of the men who die suddenly of coronary heart disease do not exhibit symptoms. The AHA also says that between 70 and 89 percent of sudden cardiac events occur in men. Both of those factors only highlight the importance men must place on protecting themselves against heart disease. The AHA notes that the steps that can help men reduce their risk for heart disease vary depending on their ages. For example, men in their 20s can make sure they exercise regularly, avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, and schedule routine

wellness visits with their physicians. Men in their 50s may need to be more diligent in their efforts to prevent heart disease, especially if they have already been diagnosed with conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. While young men and older men may need to employ different strategies in their fights against heart disease, men of all ages can benefit from routine exercise, nutritious diets and healthy lifestyles. More information about combatting heart disease can be found at www.heart.org. MT182715

Help feed hungry children with USDA’s Summer Food Service Program The USDA sponsored Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was established to ensure that all children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Free meals, that meet federal nutrition guidelines, are provided to all children 18 years old and under at approved SFSP sites. The program is

designed to fill that nutrition gap and ensure children receive the nutritious meals they need. The W.I.N. Agency is a Summer Feeding Sponsor that serves Dillon, Marlboro, Florence, Marion, Darlington, Chesterfield, Lee, and Sumter counties with breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks meals throughout the

summer months. Many SFSP sites provide not just meals, but educational, enrichment, and recreational activities that help children continue to learn and stay safe when schools are not in session. If you’re a sports camp, church, recreational center, vacation bible school or any other youth-focused activity, we can partner with

you to provide nutritious meals at no cost to you. If you or your organization is interested in becoming a Summer Feeding site this year, please contact The W.I.N. Agency at (843) 4790059 or the Sponsors’ Representative, Natasha McClain at (843) 410-7961.

State Representative Robert Williams calls for an increase in minimum wage South Carolina State Representative Robert Williams is advocating for an increase in the federal minimum wage which stands at $7.25 per hour. Williams, who is a candidate for congress in South Carolina’s 7th Congressional District said, “The time has come for an increase in the minimum wage for American workers. We can no longer sit back and watch our families continue to struggle. A country as great as ours, ought to be able to pay workers enough to provide for their families and live a life above poverty.” The federal minimum wage has not budged in

more than eight years. It is the law in any state that does not mandate a higher minimum wage. The last hike, in 2009, was the result of a series of increases signed into law by President George W. Bush. President Obama pushed for a minimum wage hike throughout his second term, but Republicans in Congress blocked Democratic proposals. Twenty-nine states have a minimum wage higher than the federal level. South Carolina is not one of them. Earlier this year, eighteen states raised their minimum wage. South Carolina was not one of them. Williams also advocated that South Carolina

move to increase the minimum wage for workers. “If we cannot raise increase the minimum wage nationally, let’s pass legislation or place a referendum on the ballot in our state to help South Carolinians,” said Williams. Williams pointed to the fact that both Republican and Democratic states are among the eighteen that passed an increase to their state’s minimum wage. “This isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue, it’s a basic human rights issue,” said Williams. Williams said that an increase in the minimum wage to $10 or more per hour would: • Have a positive impact

on small business owners and industry • Remove financial stress and encourage education, resulting in better paying jobs • Increase job growth and creation • Increase the standard of living for the poorest and most vulnerable class in society and raises average • Remove low paying jobs, forcing workers to train for, and move to, higher paying jobs. • Decrease the cost of government social welfare programs by increasing incomes for the lowest-paid. • Encourage people to join the workforce rather than pursuing money through

Simple ways to avoid injury while gardening During the winter, many people anxiously await the arrival of warm weather so they can get back outdoors. Gardening is one outdoor activity that attracts many a devotee. Although gardening can be a worthwhile and enjoyable hobby for people of all ages, like other activities, gardening carries certain safety risks, even though few people may give much thought to the risk of getting hurt when gardening. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that gardeners suffer thousands of injuries every year. Many of these injuries involve lawn and garden equipment or accessories used while tending to plants. From lawn mowers to pruners to manual garden tools, gardeners may handle various pieces of equipment that can make them susceptible to injury if they’re not careful. To reduce their risk for injury, gardeners can follow these important safety precautions.

• Plant gardens in raised garden beds and containers to reduce the need to stoop down to tend to plants. Raised beds are easier on gardeners’ backs and knees. • Wear long-sleeved shirts and durable pants to protect arms and legs from branches, thorns and insects. • Remove tripping hazards, such as roots, lumber, rocks, and loose gravel, from the yard at the start of gardening season. • Wear gloves to prevent blisters from forming and to protect hands from any chemical products used in the garden. Gloves also can keep hands clean, ensuring bacteria and fungi do not find their way into open cuts or scrapes. • Vary activities and take periodic breaks so prolonged repetitive motions do not contribute to soreness or injury. • Follow instructions for tools, and always use the right tool for the job.
