In praise of lefthanders! My late husband Beau was lefthanded. As such, I often teased that he did things backwards. For instance, he ironed from left to right – first turning the ironing board around and then holding the iron in his left hand. (Yes, he ironed!) When he wrote something it seemed awkward because when he put pen to paper to write his elbow pointed upward instead of downward as it does for righthanders. I Googled lefthandedness and found some interesting facts, such as:

“All about your family and friends”

Brenda Harrison Editor

• Approximately 12 percent the of people on earth are “lefties.” • Slang names for lefthandedness include southpaw, skivvy-handed, scrummy-handed, kaggyfisted, cawk-fisted, gibblefisted and cunny-and ballock-handed. • August 13 was designated “Left-Hander’s Day” in 1976 to raise awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experience in a predominately righthanded world. • Tests conducted by St.

ders showed that the majority were drawn to creative careers, such as art and music. • Famous left-handed artists include M.C. Escher, Thomas Kinkade, Paul Klee. Michelangelo and LeRoy Neiman. • Left-handed celebrities include Tom Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Marilyn Monroe and Jimi Hendrix were left-handed also. • Left-handedness runs in families. Lefties in the British royal family include the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Prince William. My mother used to say that when your left hand itched it indicated you will

lose money, but if your right hand itched it indicated you will receive money. • Connections between the right and left sides of the brain are faster in left-handed people, which suggests that left-handers are more efficient multitaskers. • Studies have suggested that left-handers are more talented in spatial awareness, math, and architecture. Right-handers tend to be more talented verbally. • Lefties make good baseball players, tennis players, swimmers, boxers and fencers. Almost 40 per cent of the top tennis players are lefties. Mothers over 40 at the time of a child’s birth are 128 percent more likely to have a left-handed baby than a woman in her 20s Ultrasounds show that in

the womb, 90 percent of babies appear to favor the right thumb, which corresponds to population breakdowns of right-handers and left-handers. • The gene LRRTM1 is a strong contributing factor for left-handedness. Scientists discovered the gene during a study of dyslexic children and believe it is inherited from the father. • About 30 million people in the United States are lefthanded. • Wedding rings are traditionally worn on the left hand because people believed that a vena amoris, or a “lover’s vein,” connected the fourth finger on this hand to the heart. Lawrence University in New York found that there were more left-handed people with IQs over 140 than righthanded people. Those “smart” lefthanders include Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Benjamin Franklin. • Left-handed presidents were James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. • Infamous lefthanders were the Boston Strangler, Jack the Ripper, and Osama Bin Laden. Beau always said left-handers were creative people. Apparently he was right because research shows that left-handers are better at divergent thinking, and a survey of over 2,000 left-han-

Families can also enjoy food vendors, music, face

painting, and other kid-friendly activities. Photo opportunities will be available with special appearances by Coker College’s Striker the Cobra, the Easter Bunny, and Easter Chick. “We are delighted to partner with the city to make this exciting event occur,” says Coker College President, Dr. Robert Wyatt. “Our strategic plan calls for us to continue to expand our partnership with the Hartsville community, and we are thrilled to host the youth of Hartsville for this celebration.” Please note the following tips to help make this free community event enjoyable for all: • Parking is available in all City and Coker College public parking lots. • For a campus map of

Board of Education approves revised 2017-2018 calendar

The Darlington County Board of Education approved a revised version of the 2017-2018 school district calendar at their March board meeting. The calendar takes advantage of a new state law allowing school districts more flexibility with the school year start date in order to work around the Aug. 21 solar eclipse. The 2017-18 school year will now begin on Thursday, Aug. 17. Students will also attend school on Friday, Aug. 18. On Monday, Aug. 21, which is the day of the solar eclipse, schools and district offices will be closed. Normal schedule will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Normally South Carolina schools cannot begin before the third Monday in August. This year, the total solar eclipse will take place on that day. Many school districts across the state are choosing to close schools on that day so families can view the eclipse together. The original version of the Darlington County School District (DCSD) calendar was developed by a committee of parents, students, community members,

teachers, administrators and district staff, who sifted through the numerous requirements and requests to shape and refine the final calendar. However, after further discussion, an overwhelming majority of people in those groups decided students should not be in school on the day of the solar eclipse, which will occur around the time of school dismissal. Darlington County School District will begin school on Aug. 17, which will give students the opportunity to experience their daily routine, get their books and begin learning before taking Monday, Aug. 21 off to view the eclipse. The DCSD will also provide students with glasses for safe viewing of a solar eclipse to use on their day off, helping enhance their education of the event. Also with the new calendar, teachers will start on Aug. 11. State law also requires that teachers have 10 days of professional development. Teachers typically begin working about a week before the school term start in order to prepare their classrooms and

meet professional development requirements. By law, three days must be set aside as inclement weather days. DCSD has chosen Feb. 16, Mar. 30, and Apr. 27. If not needed as an inclement weather day, Feb. 16 will be a halfday for parent-teacher conferences and students will not have school. If Mar. 30 or Apr. 27 are not needed as inclement weather days, schools will close and students and teachers will have the day off. District offices will remain open on those two days regardless. Memorial Day will not be used as an inclement weather makeup day. However, it is important to note that the district has had to make up several days every year for inclement weather, and these days will probably be used as inclement weather days. Parents are urged not to plan any activities for these days as they will likely become school days. There was a great deal of discussion about the three short days at the end of the school year. State law allows for school districts to dismiss early on these days

while still counting each day as a full day. The purpose of these days is to provide teachers and school staff with much needed time to finish grading items, input grades into the computers, and preparing classrooms and schools for the summer. The calendar committee was cognizant that short days are inconvenient for parents and that many feel quality education is not addressed on these days. As a result of the discussions, the following changes were made to the short days: • Schools will not dismiss until 11 a.m. (exact schedules will be posted later). • Students will be served lunch before leaving. • There will be an increased focus on using those days as quality learning time. • Attendance will be taken every day. “Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the parents, students, teachers and staff who worked so hard developing this calendar! We greatly appreciate your efforts and dedication,” said Audrey Childers, DCSD Public Information Officer. “As with any major project,

Business to raise funds for injured musician On April 15, Mac’s Lounge, 115 Camden Avenue, will be hosting a benefit concert for Justin Anderson, a local musician seriously injured in a car accident on March 9. The concert will feature Jacob Bryant, with special musical guests, Trey Davis, Brandon Bailey, Kendall Skinner, and Lucas Gathings. Mac’s Lounge has partnered with Classic Carolina clothing and other local vendors to raffle items and a portion of ticket sales and drink specials will go toward the cause. Anderson, a McBee, native, is a self-employed singer-songwriter who has performed at venues across the state and has previously been the front man for Outshyne and The Justin Anderson Band. Anderson is fully expected to recover from his injuries, including a shattered left arm, but he does

not have health insurance. His injuries will keep him from performing for many months while he heals, which is why Jonathan Byrd, owner of Mac’s Lounge, is hosting the concert. “We can think of no better time than this to help our buddy out. Justin is a friend to Mac’s and has performed here numerous times. He’s got a lot of fans and we hope they will show their support during the benefit,” says Byrd. The concert will begin at 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at Mac’s Lounge, Coast on Carolina, and online through PayPal at jdm803@aol.com. For information, visit the event’s Facebook Page, “Justin Anderson's Benefit show Featuring Jacob Bryant, with special guests, Trey Davis, Brandon Bailey, Kendall Skinner, and Lucas Gathings.”
