M&S SHOE REPAIR

MUMOIN CHECK CASHING

We are responding to a letter that was written to The Monsey View almost a year ago, in which a hurt parent had shared how painful it was to receive a very negative report card of her child at the end of the past school year. Unfortunately we were also one of those parents. At midterm our child’s report read, “Only with better a, b and c, will your child be able to succeed.” Okay, for a midterm report, we will tolerate that! But at the end of the year, when the comment read, ”Your child could have achieved more, if only…….” we were left astonished. At this time, before the damage is done for this year, we are writing with broken hearts to beg: Teachers and principals, please deal with the problems during the school year, and at the year’s end, please don’t inflict such terrible pain on children. Unfortunate neshamos are being hurt! Our neshamos! Hashem’s neshamos! Neshamos of the next generation! Neshamos that should be growing up as our future gedolim and nashim tzidkanios. Educators are here to instill a love for Yiddishkeit and ahavas haTorah, and great care must be taken not to knock down neshamos who hold the future in their hands. All we can do is daven that our child should get only positive comments this coming June because they stay forever, whether the report cards get saved or not. Signing with pain and good hopes, Broken Parents

SHEIMOS CONCERNS Now that the end of the school year is approaching, my daughters are starting to go through their looseleafs and are discarding the papers they no longer need. While watching them work, I am concerned to see copies from seforim and Chumashim. I’d like to bring it to the teachers’ attention that such copies should never be distributed to students. They should either be collected after use or have certain areas blocked when the copies are made. It scares me to think how many of these copies inadvertently get discarded or mishandled. A Mother

RE: A HEARTWARMING THANK YOU (Inbox, Issue 198) As I was reading the letters in your Inbox, I was rather surprised. A bus driver is lauding a bus full of boys who shouted out a window at him (even though it was positive)? Bus windows open from the top. A boy would have to stand in order to shout out. Not only that, but the same positive shout-out could easily have been negative if the boys wouldn’t have liked what another vehicle or pedestrian was doing. I have had school bus children yell things at me from the bus window, and I wasn’t too pleased about it. Please don’t condone such behavior. R.S.

Parshas Behar By: Malka Schneps

A king summoned his sons and explained that he had conquered a vast land, and that he wanted to offer each of his sons a portion of that new land. The land was extremely fertile, and it would be very easy to grow good crops and raise healthy animals there. Each of his sons would be able to live comfortably with very little effort. There were four conditions, however, for settling this land. The first three were pretty straightforward. If the sons were to commit acts of murder, immorality or disloyalty to the king, then they would be expelled from the land. The fourth condition, however, was a little puzzling. Once every seven years, they would have to take a key, insert it into a special keyhole, and turn the key. If they were not to do this, then they would be expelled from the land. At first, the brothers gladly complied with these conditions, and life was pleasant for the princes. After a while, however, they grew to think of their portion in the land as being their own private estate. While they were careful to stay far from murder and immorality, and while they gave their loyalty to their father, the king, they could not see the purpose of putting a key into a lock and turning it. The princes stopped complying with this requirement. Slowly, the land began to dry up. The crops did not grow well, and the animals grew thin. Finally, the king expelled the princes from the land. The princes came before their

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW

father, who explained that there were three reasons why they’d been expelled. One reason was that by obeying the rules regarding the land, the princes acknowledged that the land truly belonged to the king. The second reason was more practical. The key was part of an intricate system of irrigation that brought water to the land. Once in seven years, a turn of the key would reset the system to continue for another seven years. By failing to do their part once in seven years, the princes had caused the land to lose the source of its richness, leading to drought and hunger. The third reason was that if the princes would continue dwelling in a foul land devoid of its richness, they would become so impoverished that they might succumb to the other prohibitions, such as murder or disloyalty to the king. In this week’s parsha, it says, “Speak to the children of Israel and you shall say to them: When you come to the land that I am giving you, the land shall rest a Shabbos to Hashem. You may sow your field for six years, and for six years you may prune your vineyard, and gather in its produce, but in the seventh year, the land shall have a complete rest…” (Vayikra 25:2– 4). Further on, the Torah states, “You shall perform My statutes, keep My ordinances and perform them, and you will live on the land securely.” Rashi explains that transgressing Shemitah causes Bnei Yisroel to be exiled from the land. Likewise, it is says in Avos

(5:9), “Exile comes to the world for idolatry, for immorality, for murder, and for not leaving the earth at rest during the Shemitah year.” The Maharam Schik explains that failing to observe Shemitah demonstrates that a person does not acknowledge Hashem as the true owner of the land, leading to his expulsion. R’ Shmuel Rosenberg of Unsdorf, zt”l, notes that just as Shabbos is the source of bracha for the week, Shemitah is the source of bracha for each period of seven years. If a person does not keep Shemitah, then he cuts off the land from its source of bracha, leading to his expulsion from the land. Furthermore, by eating produce that did not result from the bracha that flows into the land from properly observing Shemitah, the person who eats the food will be feeding his yetzer hara and not his yetzer tov. Ultimately, his yetzer hara will grow stronger and stronger until he becomes susceptible even to the three aveiros of murder, immorality and avodah zara. Every mitzvah in the Torah, whether we understand it or not, is critically important. By observing mitzvos even when we do not understand them, we acknowledge Hashem as our King and we demonstrate our trust in Him. In the end, we are the ultimate beneficiaries of our proper mitzvah observance. May we soon be zoche to reclaim our place in Eretz Hakodesh with the arrival of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, bimheirah b’yameinu.

Despite Victory in State Education Lawsuit, Yeshivos Facing New Threat from Coalition of Local Groups A month after a state Supreme Court judge nullified new regulations that could have forced the private schools in the state to upgrade their secular curriculum and increase the number of hours devoted to those studies, a group of six local organizations is calling for emergency guidelines that would force oversight in nonpublic schools. A May 17th letter signed by members of the Spring Valley NAACP, the Rockland Citizens Action Network, Rockland United, Rockland Coalition to End The New Jim Crow, Power of Ten and the Orangetown Democratic Committee was sent to the New York State Board of Regents, charging some private schools with “continuing extreme and flagrant violation” of state law, reported The Journal News. “Too many children have already been harmed by the failure of government agencies to protect their right,” said the letter. “The buck has been passed long enough.”

Judge Christina L. Ryba struck down the guidelines announced by State Education Commissioner Maryellen Elia in late November, saying that their intricacy categorized them as rules, and that proper procedure had not been followed to enact new rules. Because the process of drafting new rules is a lengthy one, the coalition of Rockland groups asked the state to adopt Elia’s guidelines under special emergency rules to ensure that private schools offer their students an education that is substantially equivalent to that being offered in public schools. The next meeting of the Board of Regents, the body that formulates state education policy, will take place in Albany on June 3 and 4. A statement released by a spokesperson for the New York State Department of Education said that the state was considering its options in the wake of Judge Ryba’s ruling and did not indicate if the state would adopt any emergency guidelines.

No Injuries As Plane Makes Emergency Hudson River Landing in Piermont An experienced pilot walked away unharmed from a potential disaster after engine trouble forced him to make an emergency landing last week in the Hudson River. The unnamed pilot had been flying below the clouds because of bad weather when his alternator failed and his seaplane lost power, reported News 12, with numerous onlookers calling 911 as they saw the plane heading toward the water. The pilot, who is from the area, was able to land successfully in the river near the Piermont Pier, a place where he said he has often landed. No passengers were aboard the plane when it went down amid heavy fog. It was towed up the boat ramp in Piermont by rescue workers from the Nyack, Piermont and Tarrytown fire departments, the Westchester Police Department, Piermont EMS and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Marine Unit, who all responded to the scene. The plane was inspected and cleared to fly the next day, taking off from the Piermont Pier just hours

90 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 22, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

before a sightseeing helicopter crashed into the Hudson River some 20 miles away in Manhattan. According to ABC News, the only person aboard the Bell 206 helicopter was the pilot, who was not injured in the crash.

CHAPTER FIVE Recap: The cuckoo clock in Elisheva’s home, which has been broken for years, begins to “cuckoo” again at random times. Elisheva’s daughter Tzippy worries about how her parents will pay for her wedding expenses and apartment. In Bratislava 1944, the war ends, but the mothers of the two Jewish boys — Gustav and Yosef Ludmir (whom Theodore had named Edo) — don’t return. Gustav disappears to search for his mother, and when he returns, receives a nasty rebuke from Farash, the orphanage director. Yerushalayim

Tzippy walked up the stairs as Sari Goodman from the third floor came down in the opposite direction, jangling the keys to her salon. “Oh, Tzippy!” She smiled broadly. “How are you?” “Baruch Hashem, great.” “Mazel tov on your new nephew and on the bris. How’s the shul’s new hall? Is it nice?” “Yes, it’s really very pretty.” “And what’s the baby’s name?” “Shmuel, after my father’s father.” “Very nice. Is your sister still staying with you?” “No. My sister’s mother-in-law gave her a gift of three days at the kimpeturin home in Telzstone, so she’s there now.” “Nice! So, you’re going from one simcha to the next, aren’t you... When’s the wedding? Do you have a date already?” “In Shevat, b’ezras Hashem.” “Wonderful!” Mrs. Goodman leaned her head forward as if she wanted to share a secret with a five-year-old, and said, “Tell your mother that it’s not smart to wait to buy the

sheitels until the middle of the winter. After Chanukah, prices are going up. I’m having a small sale now on all of my precut wigs, and if you come now you’ll get really great prices.” Tzippy nodded solemnly. “I’ll tell my mother,” she said. “And I have a few styles that are just right for you — very modest and refined. Do you want to come over this evening?” “I’ll speak to my mother, and we’ll see what our plans are for this week. Thanks.” “Our plans for this week include starting to get you outfitted and ready for the wedding, b’ezras Hashem,” a voice said from the first floor. Tzippy’s mother came up the stairs, carrying her small pocketbook. “Oh, Sari, how are you? Do you think you have anything good for Tzippy in your salon?” “Yes, I was just telling her that I’m clearing my shelves, and if you come in this evening, I think Tzippy will find some styles that she likes.” Tzippy looked at her mother. “This evening sounds great,” Elisheva said with a smile. “When is a good time for

you? Eight?” “A little later is probably better, maybe closer to ten?” “Perfect. Thanks for thinking of us, Sari.” “With pleasure. What don’t you do for such good neighbors?” They walked into the house, right into the hubbub created by three hungry cheder children. The fact that Riki had just taken out a pot of soup from the fridge and put it on the stove to warm up did little to calm them down. “I’m going to lie down for a few minutes, girls, alright?” Elisheva said, after listening to each of the kids for a minute. “Can you give the boys something to eat?” “I’ll make some orzo,” Tzippy said hurriedly, glancing worriedly at her mother. “Mommy, do you want to drink that special migraine tea?” Itzik offered generously. “Your head hurts, right?” “No, dear,” his mother replied. “My head doesn’t hurt. My legs hurt a little. One of the babies in my group is teething, and he cried and cried, and all he wanted me to do was walk around holding him, that’s all.” She stroked her son’s cheek. “But it will pass in a few minutes, b’ezras Hashem.” “So, does your head hurt, Tzippy?” Shloimy quickly passed on the illness to his sister. “No, of course not!” She laughed. “Why did you think that my head hurts?” “Because your forehead has those lines on it, like Abba gets when a migraine starts.” “No, I’ll tell you why her forehead is creased,” Itzik announced. “Because she’s thinking all kinds of things. She’s a kallah, so she’s thinking about the stuff kallahs think about. I know she’s thinking about lots of stuff, because there are lots of lines on her forehead.” “What kind of thoughts do kallahs think?” Shloimy wondered. “What she is going to name the babies she’s going to have?” “No, if anything, it’s which cheder she should send them to.” Itzik swung his legs impatiently under the table. “They should go to our cheder!” Shloimy jumped up and splattered the soup that Riki had just set down in front of him. “And they should have Rabbi Shlomowitz in first grade, because he’s the best rebbi in the world!” “Last year you also said that your rebbi was the best in the world,” murmured seventeen-yearold Riki. “So the upshot is, Tzippy, that it makes no difference which cheder you send your future children to; as long as they follow Shloimy’s path, they are guaranteed to get the best teachers and rebbeim in the world.” Behind the closed door, the voices filtered through to Elisheva, who, despite the pain in

the younger one noted curiously. “They’re pictures that the new soldiers don’t like,” the older child, all of eight years old, explained. “The soldiers who don’t let us pray?” “Yes.” They both watched the other children in the orphanage flitting from one place to the other. All the children had freshly washed faces and were jittery with excitement as the teachers kept ordering them to move from here to there and then back again. “I’m clean already,” the little one said. “And so are you.” Suddenly they heard a piercing whistle, and then dozens of feet began stampeding toward the stairs, in the direction of the dining room. The two children stood up and joined the stream. “I don’t like his whistle,” Edo said. “Neither do I. No one likes it.” They joined the rows of children lined up against the wall of the dining room, looking straight ahead. “Is there someone,” the director began, “who doesn’t like this place?” His question was met with silence. “Because the soldiers are going to come see how things are managed here. And if you want to stay here and not be thrown out to the street, you have to say two things...” He grimaced, and although he tried to conceal it, there wasn’t a single child who missed the expression. “First: what is the most important thing in the world?” “The Party,” all of the children replied obediently. “It’s not loud enough, not convincing. What’s the most important thing in the world?” “The Party!” they all shout-

ed together. “Good. And who takes the best care of us in the whole world?” “Comrade Stalin!” The director nodded. “And the second thing you have to tell the soldiers is that you love this place. Here, you are growing up to be a vital part of the workers of the nation, and you don’t want the orphanage to be closed down. Is that clear?” “It’s clear,” the children echoed. “Maybe we should give them an example. Gustav… where is Gustav?” The child standing at the edge of the row, peeling a piece off the already-peeling wall, stepped forward. A small hand stuck itself into his, and Edo appeared with him at the front of the dining room. “Tell me a minute, Gustav,” the director said, his smile even more fiendish than his ubiquitous scowl. “If the soldiers ask you if you like this place, what will you tell them?” The boy only nodded. “Very good. So why did you once try to run away?” The boy looked around and saw a sea of faces gazing at him. He did not reply. “Oh, he just wanted to look for his family.” It was Theodore, sitting on a chair at the side and watching the assembly, who answered. “But he already realized it’s not so simple. I’ve told you, Gustav, that your family was sent to the East during the war, and will probably never come back. But listen,” he continued with a laugh, “the soldiers coming here today are also from the East, from the glorious Soviet Union. You can ask them if they saw your mother on their way.” The director guffawed loudly. So did the other teachers. But Gustav actually took the joke seriously.

Mushroom-Crusted Veal Chops

DOVID ASOVSKI SAYS: Veal is the perfect meat to serve during the meal after the milchig seudah, since it is a light meat that has a very rich flavor.

This veal has a very delicate and rich flavor, but is an absolute winner! Only for medium-rare meat lovers!

INGREDIENTS 4 first cut veal chops, 1 inch each DOVID ASOVSKI SAYS: For optimal results when preparing meat, use pure cane sugar, coarse salt, and butcher-style ground black pepper by Pereg

5 T. dried oyster mushrooms 2 T. sugar 2 T. salt 1 tsp. ground black pepper

DOVID ASOVSKI SAYS: For well-done, bread veal chops after searing with flour and bread crumbs, like shnitzel, and bake for 25 minutes: 15 minutes on one side, and 10 minutes on the other. Finish baking in a mushroom gravy until tender.

DIRECTIONS 1. Sear veal chops over medium-high heat for 3 minutes on each side, and transfer to a lined cookie sheet. 2. Process the dried mushrooms in the food processor on the S blade, until coarse crumbs form. 3. Combine the ground mushrooms with the spices.

DOVID ASOVSKI SAYS: For proper results, this meat should not be rebaked. Prior to serving, bring to room temperature and warm up for 15 to 20 minutes on 180°, uncovered.

4. Rub over veal chops on both sides. 5. Roast veal chops on 350° for 15 minutes.

Stuffed Breast of Veal

This is an absolutely marvelous meat. It is quite a “patchke” to make, but yields fantastic results. It also feeds a crowd, making it the ideal meat to serve at a large family seudah.

STUFFING 2 T. oil

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1 egg

1 medium onion, chopped

2 soft bakery rolls, or 1 small soft challah

2 T. chopped dill

½ red pepper, diced 2 stalks celery, diced

1 T. salt

1 lb. ground dark chicken

VEAL 5 lb. breast of veal pocket

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 onion, cut into rings

½ tsp. pepper

1 tsp. paprika

½ cup oil

1 tsp. onion powder

1½ cups water

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Heat two tablespoons oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté for 10 minutes. When soft, add diced red pepper, diced celery and chopped garlic. Sauté for an additional 20 minutes. Remove from flame. 2. Meanwhile, soak torn-up rolls or challah for 20 minutes. Squeeze all water out of the rolls and add to vegetable mixture. Add ground chicken, egg, chopped dill and salt to mixture and mix very well until all ingredients are well incorporated. 3. Place the onions, cut into rings, on the bottom of a large roasting pan. Meanwhile, holding the veal pocket open with one hand, push the stuffing mixture into the pocket. Try to push in as much stuffing as you can. Then, using T-pins, seal the pocket closed, and put the veal pocket into the pan, on top of the sliced onions. 4. Mix oil, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika in a small dish, and brush over entire top and sides of veal. Pour 1½ cups of water over the veal and cover very well. Bake for 3 hours.

NOTES 1. If your veal weighs a little less than five pounds or your pocket is a little small, you might have extra stuffing. The stuffing itself is absolutely delicious when formed into patties and fried. 2. An easy way to tell if your veal is completely done is to try turning the bones and removing them. They should come out very quickly and easily when ready.

Bone-In Rib Roast

114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 22, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Since a rib roast is a very rich cut of meat, it is saved for special occasions and should be prepared in a special way! If a rib roast is too big for your family, the recipe can be used for a 2-inch rib steak, which is pictured here.

RUB Oil 3 T. flour 1½ T. chicken soup mix 1 tsp. garlic powder DOVID ASOVSKI SAYS: For optimal results when preparing meat, use granulated garlic powder and butcher-style ground black pepper by Pereg

1 T. dry mustard powder ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground pepper

GRAVY 3 onions, sliced 3 cloves garlic ½ cup red wine

DIRECTIONS

DOVID ASOVSKI SAYS: For mediumrare, roast until internal temperature reaches 125–135° or until 135–145° for medium–well done.

DOVID ASOVSKI SAYS: For proper results, this meat should not be rebaked. Prior to serving, bring to room temperature and warm up for 15 to 20 minutes on 180°, uncovered. Enjoy and gut yom tov!

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Combine all ingredients for rub in a small bowl. Smear oil all over roast and then cover in rub. 2. Place roast in a baking pan. Roast open for 22 minutes for each pound of meat. (E.g., If your roast weighs 3.8 pounds then calculate: 22 minutes X 3.8 = 83.6 minutes = 1 hour and 23 minutes.) 3. In a small pan, combine onions, garlic and wine, plus the fat that dripped off of the roast. Bring to a simmer over low heat and use as a gravy over sliced roast. You can blend the gravy if you would like a finer consistency. 4. Let roast sit for at least a half hour before slicing and serving.

“It’s a blend of Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah,” a Yid from Eretz Yisroel told Reb Yisroel of Ruzhin, zy”a, when asked to describe Meron on Lag Ba’omer. The Yid then detailed the intense tefillah inside the ma’areh. The tears! They flow freely from hearts pouring out to their Master. The cries that split the Heavens… The hisorerus felt inside the cave makes one feel like it is Yom Kippur itself. And outside! Outside the cave, the simcha is so great… There is singing and dancing and music. Yidden feel the joy with their entire hearts and souls. It’s a truly deep and genuine simcha. Outside, it is like Simchas Torah! Nodding his head, the Ruzhiner appreciated the description and the comparison, and commented that this is just the way it is meant to be.

alking up the hill toward Meron, it is impossible not to feel an undercurrent of something huge taking place. All around, people are streaming upward, pining to reach the epicenter of kedusha on Lag Ba’omer. The eis ratzon on Lag Ba’omer is tremendous, with wellsprings of brachos and yeshuos available for anyone who asks. It is fitting to daven for both ruchnius and gashmius, for it is a time when we can be granted all that we need in the zechus of Reb Shimon bar Yochai. The words of Reb Shimon in Maseches Sukkah are well known, “Yachol ani l’ftor kol ha’olam kulo min hadin — In my zechus, I can exempt the entire world from punishment.” Reb Shimon says that through the yissurim he endured during his 13 years in the ma’areh, he is able to carry the burden of the aveiros of all Yidden, sparing us from suffering. Shamayim concurs with this assertion, and every year on the yahrtzeit, Yidden merit kapparah and our tefillos are heeded. This in itself is great reason for simcha! It is worthy for every ehrliche Yid to focus on teshuvah on this day, the Ya’aros Devash writes, because the zechus of Reb Shimon will help him attain true purity. On Lag Ba’omer, Rav Chanoch Henoch of Alexander, zt”l, used to wish everyone that their tefillos should be accepted in Shamayim, much like we do at the end of Yom Kippur!

124 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 22, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

The day of Reb Shimon bar Yochai’s yahrtzeit is also a day of intense joy and celebration. Reb Shimon revealed many secrets of the Torah on this day, and this arouses tremendous simcha, which is why the day is also likened to Simchas Torah. It is more than the completion of the Zohar Hakadosh that we celebrate, for the writing of the Zohar had far-reaching ramifications. This was the first time that the Torah Sheba’al Peh was committed to writing. From here, Rabbeinu Hakadosh learned that it was fitting for him to write the Mishnayos, thus ensuring that Torah Sheba’al Peh would never be forgotten by Klal Yisroel. The simcha on Lag Ba’omer in Meron is so great, it is above the ordinary boundaries of nature, says the Bnei Yissaschar. It is a simcha that is celebrated in all olamos! Reb Chaim Vital taught in the name of his rebbe, the Ari Hakadosh, that Reb Shimon himself wanted this day to become one of joy and exultation. On the day of his yahrtzeit, the Ari said, Reb Shimon bar Yochai stands at his tziyun and bentches everyone who comes to Meron to partake in his personal simcha. Everyone who joins in the simcha is

granted all that he needs. This allows Reb Shimon’s simcha to be complete.

Hadlakah: Minhag of Old

to the ner tamid. “Many childless women were helped and many sick were healed in the merit of the promises and donations that they gave at this spot,” he concluded. An eyewitness report from Reb Simcha of Zlozitz, z”l, who moved to Eretz Yisroel in 1764, detailed that near the dome of Reb Shimon outside of the ma’areh stood a pillar with a large type of cup on it. Oil was poured and clothes of wool and flax were placed inside it before it was set aflame. Reb Simcha was in

When night falls at the onset of Lag Ba’omer, the Boyaner Rebbe, shlit”a, of Yerushalayim first sets the hadlakah in Meron on fire. He received this privilege as a yerushah tracing back to Reb Yisrael of Ruzhin, zy”a, who purchased the zechus of the hadlakah for all the years to come. The first known reference to a hadlakah at the tziyun of Reb Shimon is traced back to Rav OvaOn the day of his yahrtzeit, Reb Shimon dia of Bartenura. In a letter to his bar Yochai stands at his tziyun and brother dated 1489, he described that many people gravitated to bentches everyone who comes to Meron Meron from surrounding areas to partake in his personal simcha. and lit large bonfires in addition

Bringing Out the Inner Flame Lag Ba’omer is symbolized by “hod shebehod — splendor of splendors.” It is the peak of beauty and magnificence. On the day of his passing, Reb Shimon revealed the pnimius, the innermost beauty of Torah learning. And until this day, on the yahrtzeit, that depth is awakened. It is an occasion when every Yid can feel and recognize the beauty of his own inner value, his personal pnimius. He can tap into his essence and understand the hidden kochos he possesses. Under this influence, every Yid has the ability to view the externals of the Yid beside him, but actually perceive the true inner core that shines within. And so, as multitudes of diverse Yidden link arms before the blazing hadlakah, they dance to a tune of achdus, of increased ahavas Yisroel. The fire itself, a central part of Lag Ba’omer celebrations, indicates the kedusha of the Yiddishe neshamah. After 12 years of Torah learning hidden in the cave, Reb Shimon and his son, Reb Elazar, emerged, only to set fire to everything their eyes beheld. They returned to the cave, and one year later, Reb Shimon exited again. He spotted a simple Yid carrying two hadassim. This time, he did not scorch anything in his path, but on an even higher level than before, was able to tolerate the simplicity and ignorance that he came across. What changed? During the second span of time in the ma’areh, Reb Shimon learned about the essence of a Yiddishe neshamah. He recognized the core kedusha of even a simple Yid, regardless of his level.

Meron in the month of Shevat, and still remnants of the fire of Lag Ba’omer — more than three-quarters of a year before — lingered. Reb Chaim Halevi Horowitz, a household member of Reb Mordechai of Kremnitz, zt”l, arrived in Eretz Yisroel in 1817. With much emotion, he depicted the hadlakah in Meron: “Who could describe the beauty and the simcha shel mitzvah on the yom hillula…” He explained that in the evening, talmidei chachamim gathered in the beis midrash and passionately learned from the Zohar. Then they would light the fire in those large cups, and the shamash would announce how much everyone donated for the hadlakah… Being that the ma’areh sits on a hill, the flames were visible from afar. Another moving report is recorded from Reb Yehuda Leib Horonstein, the Foltishaner Rav, zt”l. His words emphasize the profound privilege and pleasure that he felt when being in Meron. “On the eve of Lag Ba’omer,” he wrote, “there was the hadlakah of the Sephardim. All through the night and following day, the simcha with song, dance and musical instruments didn’t stop for a moment. And as night fell, beginning lamed daled ba’omer, the Ashkenazim would light the hadlakah…”

Staying Behind? Reb Shlom’ka of Zvill, z”ya, was known to say that the expenses involved in traveling to Reb Shimon fall under the category of expenses of Shabbos and yom tov that are excluded from a person’s parnassah ordained for him on Rosh Hashanah. When in Meron, Reb Shlom’ka said that Lag Ba’omer references the Shalosh Regalim. The hills surrounding Meron are reminiscent of Har Sinai; the tents set up around the ma’areh suggest the sukkah; and the sheep that some kehillos used to come with were indicative of the Korban Pesach. When he returned from Meron, Reb Shlom’ka said, “There is nothing more to speak or ask… If someone still feels he is missing something, it is a siman that he was not in Meron!” Nothing can be compared to physically

taking part in Reb Shimon’s simcha in Meron on the yahrtzeit. Still, the kedusha and opportunity is not limited to the place. The day itself carries intrinsic potency — wherever one may be! Tzaddikim throughout the generations were careful to light hadlakos and take advantage of the eis ratzon for tefillos and yeshuos, even in chutz la’aretz. In fact, Reb Shimon bar Yochai wrote, “Shanu midosai!” which means that the most important level of connection with Reb Shimon is learning and following in his ways.

Naming After Reb Shimon “My Shimmy is just a few months old, yet I could hardly count how many times people have asked me if he is named after Reb Shimon,” Suri shares. Mr. Stein hardly misses a year in Meron on Lag Ba’omer. When his fourth son was born, and he had already given names after all close ancestors, he was so excited to finally have his Shimon! It is commonplace for anyone and everyone to name their child Shimon — underscoring the real connection felt to the tzaddik. The Shelah Hakadosh writes that at the kever of Reb Shimon, Yidden learn the Zohar with trepidation and deveikus, and many nissim take place there. As such, the sefer Taamei Haminhagim brings down, “With our own eyes we have seen that many childless couples who promised to name their children after Reb Shimon, or undertook to bring the child they would bear to Meron for his first upsherin, were helped in the zechus of Reb Shimon.” Many have adopted the minhag of sponsoring Chai Rotel, 18 measurements of drink, and have seen great yeshuos.

“And He Shall Be Shorn” Fathers carrying three-year-old boys on their shoulders can be sighted among the rings dancing in Meron. The hectic, lebedig

When he returned from Meron, Reb Shlom’ka said, “There is nothing more to speak or ask... If someone still feels he is missing something, it is a siman that he was not in Meron!” 126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 22, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

matzav on Lag Ba’omer is not particularly suited to young children; still, dozens of families make the trip with their little ones, excited for the opportunity to cut their hair for the first time at the tziyun of Reb Shimon. In Parshas Vayikra (13:33) it says, “vehisgalach — and he shall be shorn.” This word in the pasuk, which references cutting the hair, has a large gimmel, pointing to the minhag of cutting a boy’s hair at age three. It is pasuk lamed gimmel, as well, which points to the source for performing this custom specifically on Lag Ba’omer. It is said that the Ari Hakadosh, zy”a, brought his son to Meron for his upsherin, celebrated with mishteh v’simchah.

For Everyone Side by side, they dance, Yidden of all types. It’s as if there is a magnetic pull attracting them as individuals and as one to the holy site: the tziyun of Reb Shimon bar Yochai. What is it about Reb Shimon that captivates one and all? What brings thousands upon thousands together in unity at his kever, year in and year out, on the heilige day of Lag Ba’omer? The words of the Beis Aharon are famous. Whoever believes in Reb Shimon, derives chizuk from Reb Shimon bar Yochai. Just as Hakadosh Baruch Hu is for all, so too, is Reb Shimon for all — even for the lesser ones. Reb Shimon bar Yochai brought the Zohar Hakadosh, the holy secrets of the Torah, down to us, simple Yidden. He made these treasured sodos of Kabbalah accessible to us, letting himself down, kevyachol, to our level, explaining and expounding so every Yid can learn it too. His very name, bar Yochai, which references his father, reminds us that just as Reb Shimon — a “regular” person, born to Yochai, a “regular” father and mother — was able to reach so high, so too, we “regular” people can strive to attain the highest levels. There is much for every Yid, on any level, to access and gain from his connection with Reb Shimon.

I surveyed my dirah of six years. The beds, purchased in the second-hand shop four years earlier, were now sagging like hammocks; the talented painter Moishe Zev, remnants of his artistic talent still gracing the wall, was now a father of two; and the ill-equipped corner kitchenette, which magically produced delectable cholent and yapchik each week by master selfacclaimed chefs, now sat forlorn. Abandoned. Lifeless. The only thing echoing life was the new collection of open Samsonites scattered in every corner. A new zman. A fresh start. And once again, the alte bachur, almost a

furniture piece, was there to welcome the throngs of freshies. When I’d reached the age of shidduchim, my peers predicted I’d be snatched up instantly. My parents, ever proud of their tchatchke, expected to be inundated with suggestions. “Our son is gonna go in no time,” they had told shadchanim smugly. But the phones were silent, and even the few suggestions that trickled in here and there didn’t drive them enough to bring me home. So there I was at the age of 26, still single. If I may say so myself, I was a solid bachur. A sought-after chavrusa

who kept strong sedarim and full bein hasedarim, the roshei yeshivah would praise. My chavrusas, though, changed quicker than the pace of fashion, as they each returned to their hometowns to find their basherte. Wishing my previous chavrusos mazel tov on the upsherins of their sons was not easy. And I can’t deny that there were twinges of pain when a chavrusa six years my junior was engaged, nor can I admit it was simple to constantly be the emcee of the yeshivah welcoming crew. But I was adamant not to wilt and toiled to genuinely rejoice in others’ simchos.

Every Pesach I returned home with hopes that were soon shattered all over again. And then, every Erev Rosh Chodesh Tishrei found me sitting on my bulging suitcases in an effort to zip them shut. Again. And now I was back. Immersing in learning helped me forget my plight. When Lag Ba’omer arrived and the frisha bachurim were occupied with making arrangements for the buses with vigor, I remained uninvolved. It was, after all, my seventh Lag Ba’omer here as a bachur. How excited can you get? The night before the big day, my chavrusa Yanky approached me. “Hey, Schwartz. Are you going at night or by day?” “Nah,” I shrugged him off. “I don’t go anymore. Been there, done that.” My mug rattled with the force of my words, and coffee splattered, adding to the vast collection of stains on my tallis katan. “Are you kidding me?!” Yanky retorted. “Do you know what you can poil? It’s no kleinekeit. My brother waited nine years for children and now proudly calls his ben yachid Shimon. People come from all over the world to daven at this heilige tanna’s tziyun, and you are a mere three hours away and are willing to forgo this opportunity?” He twirled his peyos in the manner that he does when he becomes fiery over a sugya. What should I say? He was very convincing, and I soon agreed to join him. The next morning, at the crack of dawn, I was on my way. “Been there, done that,” I’d said, but the truth was that no matter how many times you experience Lag Ba’omer in Meron, the electrifying feeling is felt each year anew. Once we arrived, I was overtaken with emotion and made it my mission to reach the ma’areh. With perseverance I didn’t know I possessed, I pushed through the mass of mispallelim. Stares were given no heed, and the sun, beating mercilessly on my battered chalat, was ignored. Finally, I arrived at the ma’areh. Paralyzed in place, engulfed by an indescribable aura, 26-yearold Gedalia Schwartz, the boy who’d never shed a tear since he got stitches in kindergarten after falling from the seesaw, began to weep. I cried uncontrollably, my body wracked with sobs. “Reb Shimon,” I begged, “I know that childless couples come to you and promise to name their child after you. But look at me — I’m a full step behind them! I don’t even have a wife! I’m lonely and single. How many more weddings can I attend, dancing joyfully while hurting inside? How many new chavrusos do I still need to

meet just because the rest of them move on in life? What can I promise you? Reb Shimon, Reb Shimon, Reb Shimon!” I choked on my words, contemplating what to say next. I hiccupped. And then I thought of a promise. “Reb Shimon, plead with the Ribono Shel Olam on my behalf, and I will name my child Shimon.” Relief overtook me. My mind cleared, and a tremendous weight slipped off my back. I wiped my tears, composed myself, recited some Tehillim and headed back to Yerushalayim. Something in my heart whispered that I was a gehulfena. I resumed my fulfilling schedule of fartugs, afternoon and night sedarim, but with a lighter heart. There was something about my promise that lightened the load. Some time later I was talking to my mother. The preamble was the same as usual. “Are you taking care of yourself, Gedalia? Eating, but not overeating; sleeping, but not oversleeping?” “Sure, Mommy,” I responded, and out of respect for my dear mother, bit my lip in expectation of the next question that I knew was coming. “Do you look put together, clean tallis katans and pressed shirts?” “Of course, of course,” I rushed to assure her as I traced the myriad coffee stains on my tallis katan and surveyed the creases on my shirt. This interrogation was something I was accustomed to by now. Finally, after the standard introduction was over, we moved on to normal talk. This time her voice carried an unidentifiable edge that I couldn’t pinpoint. “The Fried girl who was suggested over a year ago was suggested again, and this time the Frieds are displaying interest,” she finally

followed, and I reveled in the attention I was showered with. The rest of the engagement passed in a haze of gifts, shopping, apartmenthunting and formal mechutan phone calls. At last, the wedding day approached. I was well-prepared and ready to build my home. The chasunah was lebedig, copious tears were shed at the mitzvah tantz, and soon the special day slipped through our fingers too fast, months of preparation vanishing in mere moments. Sheva brachos flew by. I adored our humble abode, every detail so painstakingly arranged by my dear wife. When I complimented her on her talent and flair, she positively glowed, and I patted myself on my back. Life could not get any better. One evening, while we strode home in comfortable silence after a delicious meal at her parents’, I suddenly turned to my wife. “You know,” I said to her, “when I was desperate to get engaged, I made a promise to name our first son Shimon.” “Shimon?!” She was incredulous. “But Zeidy Fried, may he live and be well, is Shimon.” I stopped walking. What had I been thinking, promising a name without taking my wife’s family into account? But my understanding wife quickly reassured me that we’d figure it out when we’d need to, and we continued walking home. So yes, there was a flurry of activity that followed the birth of our son a year later, the first on the to-do list being hataras nedarim. And even though our firstborn is a cute, dimpled Moishe, I trace my yeshuah back to a very special day, a very large crowd, a very strong sun and a 26-year-old bachur pouring out his heart to Reb Shimon.

“Are you kidding me?!” Yanky retorted. “You know what you can poil? It’s no kleinekeit.”

blurted out with unconcealed excitement. Before I even said a word, visions of Meron came to mind. Reb Shimon was pulling strings here. It had to be. The Fried shidduch was one (and from the only ones) my parents were vying for even before it was mentioned. The conversation ended with some more warnings and a sprinkle of praise as to how proud I make my parents. Two weeks later I booked a flight, heading toward a future I knew was coming. I can confidently say it was worth the wait. The girl was everything I’d hoped for plus much more. She had a refined character and sterling qualities. She respected Torah and we shared identical values. It was a definite yes on my part. And it was also a yes from the girl’s side. I was the happiest chasan in the world. Multitudes of well-wishers from every age and stage came to share in my joyous simcha. I accepted all the blessing with pomp and elation. I was on cloud nine, a permanent grin stretched over my face. I was being teased that I was acting like an 18-year-old all over again. But who cared about the teasing? I was a chasan! The tenayim soon

We head up north as a group, our itinerary carefully mapped out: Shabbos in Tzfas, a light melavah malkah, and then it would be time to hit the road. By the time we’ll reach Meron, we estimate, the crowds from Yerushalayim will only just be on their way. “It should be quiet,” my friends assure me, ever optimistic.

ut even quiet-loving me feels the excitement mount as our bus creeps toward the mountain. The highway is full, and all around us, families are abandoning their cars, opting to walk. Despite the traffic congestion, there’s hardly any honking tonight, and no one seems irate. The hour is late — well past midnight — although the only thing that seems to indicate so is the dark, dark sky. But as we draw closer, even the sky flickers bright, and the noise — oh, the noise. It starts off as a low thrum, but by the time we reach the mountain it’s nearly deafening. People chatter, and security radios cackle alongside an endless array of speakers that seem to materialize out of nowhere.

Strains of “Va’amartem” mixed with “Rabbeinu Nachman” and a slow, heartfelt niggun that I cannot place. We scurry off the bus and check the time. “We’ll meet back here in three hours!” my friends say. I stifle a gasp. Three hours! How can I possibly spend three hours in this dizzying hubbub of action and noise? But I forge ahead, accompanied by one friend. Somewhere in my head, and maybe even in my heart, I know that this place, this time, is special beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. And yet, the chaos, the crowds, overwhelm me. The smells are strong: sweat and falafel (isn’t it 2 a.m.?) and spilled wine, wafting and mixing as one. But most of all, it’s the sheer mass of humanity, pressing on, surround-

ing me on all sides, that’s just so very much, and just for a moment, I let the crowd swell around me, engulfing me until I’m almost completely swallowed. I know this is spiritual, all of it. And yet a part of me just wants to go home. But I don’t. Instead, I grit my teeth and keep moving. Stay focused, I tell myself. Make it to the tziyun, daven, and come back. Just do it. You’ll be okay. Slowly, slowly, up and up we go. All around, people are hollering, whooping, rushing — dancing even — with music blasting from every corner we pass. Leaflets and booklets, loudspeakers and banners, everything here seems to scream something. It’s incredible, truly, but also so very hot. As we reach higher, it only gets worse. The path becomes crowded and stuffy, far too narrow to contain us all. There isn’t much to see, just the back of the person in front of me, but somehow, desperately, I manage to hold on to my friend’s hand, and But most of all, it’s we zigzag through the masses. stillness, the fervor to solemnity. We duck under the low ceiling of the tziyun, and I find that I can breathe. I feel myself reaching out, although maybe I’m reaching in, and some part of me realizes that my face is wet. The space around me is silent, only whispered tefillos joining, ascending together, thick and fast. My emotions spill forward, battling at the forefront. There’s so much to daven for, so much to say. The tefillos — mine and hers and theirs — rush forward, surprising me with their intensity. Worries and hopes, dreams and confusion, feelings I never knew I had. The past, the present, the future, all the pain and joy… It’s all there, twisting and turning, merging and connecting us to each other, to ourselves, forming a picture that’s bigger than us all. Minutes later, I’m done. Depleted, I lean back, and let the energy wash over me. My lips whisper just one time more, and then I take a step back to make room for another to slip into my spot. I breathe in deeply — oddly, the air is cool. And then I turn, bid the silence farewell, and make my way back out to the noise. I don’t wonder anymore. I know why they come. And while my friends still marvel at the fires, the torches, the crowds, I hold my precious memory dear. Because there’s something bigger than the crowds, bigger than the hoopla. I know because I touched it that night, and I’ve felt it ever since: Va’amartem ko lachoi — our tefillah, the bonds that connect us, tapping into our eternal spark and enabling us to reach higher — higher even than the greatest flames.

Outside the Golan Heights, Har Meron is the highest peak in Eretz Yisroel, at 3,963 feet above sea level.

Har Meron and the surrounding area is a nature reserve. The mountain cannot be walked up from every direction due to its dense undergrowth.

The average temperature in the month of May (when Lag Ba’omer usually falls) is a high of 73 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 55 degrees.

Meron has hot and dry summers and damp, cool winters. It snows briefly a few times in the winter. On average, there are 28 days a year where the temperature reaches below freezing point.

According to archaeologists, Meron is what is mentioned in the Gemara as “Merom” — a village where sheep were reared and which was known for its olive oil. Some sources say that the celebrated “merino” wool wool may have etymological roots in the name Meron.

Due to its altitude and chalky soil, Meron is conducive for growing grapes for wine, and one of the local attractions is the Meron Vineyards.

Despite the hundreds of thousands of visitors on Lag Ba’omer, the population in the village of Meron is small. In 2017, its population was 938.

Present day, approximately 500,000 people from all stripes of Yiddishkeit visit Meron on Lag Ba’omer.

In Meron, preparations for Lag Ba’omer start as early as December. To accommodate the masses, tents are set up, parking lots are organized, vendors plan the selling of food, and in the days before Lag Ba’omer, highways leading to the mountain are closed to ordinary traffic. People can arrive to Meron on Lag Ba’omer by bus only, though in recent years, helicopter flights have been available for more than $3,000 a flight.

When Rabi Shimon passed away, townsmen of different communities, both from Meron and nearby towns, insisted that he be buried in their town. When his talmidim came out carrying the tzaddik’s body, Rabi Shimon’s aron lifted itself up and propelled itself to the cave on a hillside at the foot of Har Meron, choosing its resting place.

Before Rabi Elazar passed away in the village of Akbara, he instructed his wife not to inform anyone of his passing and to place his body in the attic. His body remained there for 22 years, in which no deaths, sicknesses or tragedies occurred in the town. After 22 years, the Rashbi appeared in a dream to select people, instructing them to bury his son near him.

Rabi Shimon passed on in the year 160; this year marks the 1,859th yom hillula.

In the 12th century, Binyamin mi’Tudela, a traveler from a region that is present-day Spain who wrote a famous book about his travels, visited Meron and described a cave of kevarim believed to be the resting place of Hillel, Shamai and 20 other talmidim and rabbanim. In 1210, Shmuel ben Shimshon, who traveled from France to Eretz Yisroel, located the kever of Shimon bar Yochai and his son Reb Elazar.

The first structure around Rabi Shimon’s kever was built during the end of the 16th century by Rabbi Avraham Galante, a wealthy Italian mekubal who lived in Tzfas. Over the next 200 years, more rooms and chambers were built to shelter the wayfarers who journeyed from afar to the Rashbi. Further expansion and renovations were completed at the end of the 19th century, leaving it essentially the same way it is today.

Rabi Shimon’s cave is completely sealed, and no one has accessed it since the Talmudic times. The known occasions when people pinpointed the exact entrance (the first time, it was a worker who found it when R’ Avraham Galante built the structure) ended in tragedy. The cave where Rabi Shimon is buried should not be confused with the Rashbi’s cave in nearby Pekiin, where Rabi Shimon and Rabi Elazar hid for thirteen years while evading the Romans. Near the cave in Pekiin, offshoots of the original carob tree still grow and the spring runs in the town square. < Pilgrimage to Meron, circa 1920

The minhag of bringing sons to get their first upsherin in Meron was established by the Ari Hakadosh, the master mekubal Reb Yitzchok ben Shloma Luria, zt”l, who, according to his talmid Rabbi Chaim Vital, zt”l, brought his son to Rabi Shimon’s tziyun for his chalakah. < Shammai’s kever in Meron
