(Re: A Name Is Born, Issue 172) First, I’d like to thank you for a wonderful publication every week. The sales superstar contest was such an original, novel idea! I took issue with the story of the woman whose grandchild was not named after her father. Yes, it’s a parent’s right to name a child however they choose to, but it is an extreme lack of kibbud av v’eim and derech eretz to shock a grandparent to such an extreme. At the very least, the parent of the baby should have hinted to his mother that it will not be the name she expected. Although not wanting to share a name before a bris may be understandable in some cases, it’s basic mentchlichkeit to make sure the grandparents know what to expect. You can’t always prevent how hurt a mother will be, but you can cushion the blow. R.W.

AN IMPORTANT HALACHA My son’s rebbi taught the boys an important halacha regarding Avos U’Banim that I would like to share. Most boys go to shul with their father before Mincha and stay until after Avos U’Banim (which is after Maariv). It’s assur for your sons to carry their parsha tzetlach with them, since it’s in preparation for Motzei Shabbos. His rebbi suggested that they learn with their father at least a pasuk or so on Shabbos so that it should be okay to carry the papers with them. Thank you, Rabbi Margareten. Mrs. D.

A THOUGHTFUL ACT I would like to thank my fellow shopper for being courteous and placing my lost Tip Top bag within eye’s view at the Shoppers Haven mall. I left it there unintentionally before leaving and found it upon my return several hours later. Thank you! B.L.

Dear Monsey Residents, Drivers and Pedestrians, I am a bus driver, but also a car driver, and I know bus drivers have a negative image in your minds for several reasons: 1. It is very frustrating to be stuck behind a bus that makes many stops when you’re in a rush. 2. Buses are big and intimidating on the road, and when they travel at 30 mph it unsettles you. 3. You are upset when a driver can’t drop off your child in a tight dead-end. 4. You have encountered an individual reckless driver in the past and project that image onto bus drivers at large. 5. You are upset at the overdevelopment of our town and the many buses on the road. Allow me to share some reasons why the innocent bus driver doesn’t deserve this attitude: 1. A bus driver follows his route, making stops

according to the instructions he received. 2. The majority of drivers are extremely careful and considerate of the fact that they drive young charges, and they drive within the speed limit. 3. A bus driver carries a huge responsibility and is concerned about the safety of the children. Therefore he will avoid going into tight spaces, like dead-ends, where the need to back out will add risks to his driving. 4. The fact that the roads are full of buses is even harder for a bus driver, but he does his job with a smile anyway. 5. The driver has a reason for not letting you pass before opening the stop sign. Maybe a particular kid would run into the road just seeing his bus; perhaps there are mothers anxiously awaiting his arrival. Please be considerate and understand that bus drivers are good-hearted people who try to put bread on their table by doing their work; care about the safety of the children and try to do their jobs responsibly; and try to make the parents happy. Here are few legal tips: • A driver must turn on his yellow lights 300 feet before a stop. • While the yellow lights are on, drivers behind the bus must yield to 20 mph and be ready to stop. • And if you’re behind the bus, you may not pass when yellow lights are on. And of course, pedestrians, please always wear reflectors. A Monsey Bus Driver Simply Trying To Do His Job

HADASSAH WAS ANXIOUS as she walked toward the chasunah hall. As an older single, attending chasunos was becoming increasingly uncomfortable — not because she was single while another girl was getting married, which was not an issue for her at all, but because of all the attention this fact drew to her. I have to prepare what to answer when people begin peppering me with nosy questions or showering me with brachos, she decided. If only I could think of the perfect response, one that would communicate politely but clearly that it is not nice to do this to someone. If only I could think of just the right words to convey that their good intentions hurt me. Or at least get them not to do it again in the future. But Hadassah knew this would only backfire. If anything, answering back, no matter how politely, would only bring her more pity. What could she say? Hadassah racked her brains, trying to find the perfect solution. What if, a little voice whispered in her heart, what if… you didn’t say anything at all? What if you just smiled and thanked people, and replied politely, and answered amen? What would happen? Hadassah stopped in her tracks. Not answer back? Silence my pain? It just did not seem fair to her that other people could make her so uncomfortable, and she should practically reward them for it. But why not? pressed the little voice. Why would that be so bad? Chances are, nothing you can say will change those women — but staying silent might change you. Do it as a chesed. Hadassah was shocked. The solution had been there all along, evading her thoughts. In an instant, the tension that had gripped her

Is silence merely the absence of words?

68 / THE MONSEY VIEW

vanished. Hadassah resumed walking, but her steps were different now, freer. As she walked, she began to notice the crackling of leaves under her feet, and the cool autumn breeze brushing her cheeks. She stopped and began to look around, taking in the beauty of a fall evening. She was at peace. Words are powerful. Words can build relationships, and words can destroy relationships. But what about silence? Is silence merely the absence of words? Silence is powerful in its own right. We learn this especially from Rochel Imeinu. Rochel stayed silent as her sister took her own place under the chuppah. Rochel stayed silent as Leah bore numerous children, even as Rochel herself remained childless. And Rochel remained silent when she asked Leah for some of the dudaim flowers that Reuven had brought for Leah, and Leah responded, “Is it a small matter that you have taken my husband, that you also wish to take my son’s dudaim?” It is this last story, the story of the dudaim, that especially highlights the greatness of Rochel’s silence, for it demonstrates that Leah was not fully aware that Rochel had given away her chasan to her sister. We know that Rochel communicated the signs to Leah, but she clearly did so in a way that Leah never realized what was happening. This is a very high form of silence. It is one thing to not tell someone something — it is another matter to ensure that they do not find out. And it is a madreigah beyond all imagination to keep that silence even when the other person seemingly throws it back in your face, as Leah appeared to have done in the incident above. Staying silent in the face of words that are rude, hurtful, nosy or combative is not easy, but it is so freeing to rid oneself of the need to return the volley of words — and the person need not ever know. You never lose out by holding your tongue.

State Offers Heating Assistance for Low- to Middle-Income Families With temperatures heading steadily downward and the first snowflakes of the season already sighted in the Monsey area, thermostats are being fired up to ward off the chill, but for those with limited finances, staying warm can be challenging. As of this week, a state-funded program will be available to help New Yorkers with limited incomes comfortably make it through the upcoming winter months. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced last week that the application process for the Home Energy Assistance Program, known as HEAP, would begin on Tuesday, November 13. Monsey residents can apply for the federally funded program at Building L of the Rockland County Department of Social Services located on Sanitorium Road in Pomona. Eligibility for the program is based on income, household size and what type of heating is present in the home. Qualifying households can receive a one-time HEAP benefit of $726. "As cold winter weather approaches, this administration is steadfast in its commitment to assisting vulnerable New Yorkers struggling to pay their heating bills," said Cuomo. "Whether it's senior citizens on a fixed income, or low-income working families, this assistance will keep New Yorkers safe and help them avoid having to choose between buying food or paying their heating bill." Households with an annual income of up to $55,178 can qualify for the program, and those who have received

HEAP assistance and are at risk of having their heat shut off or running out of oil may be eligible for further emergency benefits, which can also be obtained through the Rockland County Department of Social Services starting January 2, 2019. Over 1.4 million households in New York State, including more than 100,000 in the Mid-Hudson region, received HEAP benefits last year. For more information on HEAP, contact the Rockland County Department of Social Services at 364-3480.

Multiple Allegations of Discrimination Against Pomona Officials in Two Lawsuits and Human Rights Commission Report Top-ranking officials in the Village of Pomona have found themselves named in a pair of federal civil rights lawsuits and a Rockland Human Rights Commission report charging them with discriminating against Orthodox Jews. Pomona Mayor Brett Yagel and building inspector Louis Zummo are among several charged with targeting Jewish residents for zoning code violations and other acts of antiSemitism, reported The Journal News. In the report, former village clerk Noreen Shea claimed that she was fired from her job last year “because she was unwilling to be complicit in an ongoing hidden agenda against Orthodox Jewish residents of Pomona.” Shea claimed that Yagel suggested leaving pork rinds out on the front counter of the village offices to deter Jews from coming in and accessing municipal services that were right-

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 14, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

fully available to them as Pomona residents. The report, which was signed by several high-ranking officials, recommended that a public hearing be held to resolve the issues. Among the other allegations of anti-Semitic behavior detailed in the report were Zummo’s admission that he would mock Orthodox Jewish residents by mimicking their speech patterns, acknowledgement by a village trustee that Jewish residents faced arbitrary and unjustified delays when seeking building permits or certificates of occupancy, and a description of “shul patrols” that would have village officials selectively ticketing residences that housed shuls. According to the report, the Village of Pomona denied the allegations, saying that they did not engage in anti-Semitic or unconstitutional behavior and that Shea was fired because of poor job performance.

You’re not peeling apples an hour before Shabbos, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have your compote. For a sherbet-like texture, serve it semifrozen (it’s even better that way).

INGREDIENTS 1 large (48 oz.) jar plain applesauce 1 bag frozen strawberries, slightly thawed

86 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Strawberry Applesauce

DIRECTIONS 1. Pour applesauce and strawberries into container and blend with hand blender until smooth. 2. Freeze until serving. Tastes best very cold or even slightly frozen.

What happens two hours before Shabbos when you realize that the lokshen kugel you were planning to make never happened? You improvise! And then the results are so good that you don’t do it any other way ever again. No dirty pot — just one disposable pan in the oven!

One-Pan Lokshen Kugel

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

1 package (11 oz.) kugel noodles

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a 9x13 disposable pan with baking paper, making sure the paper comes up all the way on all sides of pan.

2 tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper 4 cups boiling water ⅔ cup sugar ½ cup oil 5 eggs, lightly beaten

2. Place noodles in pan. Sprinkle salt and pepper over noodles. Then pour boiling water over it and stir with fork to break up large clumps. 3. Cover tightly and bake for 30 minutes. 4. Remove from oven and add sugar and oil to pan. Add eggs, mixing quickly as you pour to prevent eggs from curdling. Mix very well to distribute salt and spices, which may have settled to the bottom while baking. 5. Bake, uncovered, for about 40 minutes. Remove from oven and cover well immediately to retain moisture.

Mmmm — ice cream. Dirty mixer — not so much. Two plastic containers and a fork are all you need to create this impressive — and yummy — dessert. This is completely egg-free, so kids with egg allergies can enjoy it too!

Shake-n-Make Ice Cream

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

8 oz. whip topping, defrosted

Serves 8

1½ cups soy milk 1 package (Osem) instant vanilla pudding

1. Pour whip into a 1-quart plastic container. Cover tightly and shake vigorously until whip stiffens. This may take several minutes. (Please note that stiff peaks don’t have to form.)

3. Combine both mixtures and mix gently. Freeze. Serve scooped with any sauce/toppings.

2. Pour soy milk into another container, and slowly add pudding mix while beating with fork.

Note: Cover photo shows this simpler version.

Optional: Add some chocolate syrup to the mixture before freezing and marbleize with fork.

For a more elegant presentation (as shown in photo): 1. Make ice cream as above. Before freezing, line an 8-inch square or round pan with plastic wrap. 2. With your fingers, crush 3 to 4 snack-size bags of cookies or chocolate wafers in their sealed packages. Sprinkle crumbs onto plastic wrap. Gently spoon ice cream mixture onto crumbs. Freeze. 3. Cut into squares or wedges. Layer two squares and pour chocolate sauce/syrup over top. 4. For chocolate sauce shown: Dissolve 2 T. cocoa, 1 tsp. coffee and 2 T. sugar in a bit of hot water. Blend in some of the ice cream mixture. Keep refrigerated.

He was a true talmid chacham, the only frum one among his brothers. Having grown up in a very secular leftist home in Eretz Yisroel, his sincere embracing of the life of a Torah Yid was a curious phenomenon. What propelled him to reach higher? His mother, he shared, knew virtually nothing about Yiddishkeit. She was aware of the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros, however, and knew that it was an opportune time to daven for her children. Thus, every week, she prayed that her children grow up to be like Ben Gurion. Who could be a better role model for a secular person than the prime minister? One day, his mother saw in the news that Ben Gurion had visited the Chazon Ish, ztl. She read the descriptions of the poignant meeting and thought to herself that if Ben Gurion had troubled himself to travel all the way to Bnei Brak to meet this holy man, he must be even greater than the prime minister! Chana was famous for the style of davening that she introduced — “rak sefaseha naos, v’kolah lo yishama,” her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Still, Hashem heard her entreaties and blessed her with a son, Shmuel Hanavi, who was equivalent in greatness to Moshe and Aharon. When she arrived at the Mishkan, she poured forth her heart in gratitude for Hashem, with her prayer, “Vatispallel Chana.”

ing tzedakah before lighting. The Ben Ish Chai explains one, stating that on Friday night, the malachim come and, placing their hands on a person’s head, ask forgiveness for his sins. Another reason is that lighting candles is a tikkun for the sin of Chava, and thus giving tzedakah beforehand is the woman’s way of imploring additional atonement.

Rekindling the Light

The mitzvah of hadlakas neiros is intended to be fulfilled when the woman is calm and ready, with a happy heart, a symbol of peace and tranquility, following in the ways of Aharon Hakohen. And much like the Menorah attested that the Shechinah rests upon Klal Yisroel, she is grateful for the privilege to bring the Shechinah into her home. The woman steps toward the candles. Dressed in special Shabbos garb, her “bigdei kehunah,” she approaches the holy task of ushering the kedushah of Shabbos into her mikdash me’at. Reminiscent of the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash, she lights with olive oil as an extra hiddur. She waits for each little flame to go up before kindling the next spark. The glow of the licht radiates joy and serenity in the home, essentially extinguishing the fires of dispute, sadness and weekday worries. Hidden in the flames of the Shabbos licht is a vestige of the Ohr Haganuz. Basking in the aura of this holy licht has an impact on the Yiddishe neshamah, whether it is felt externally or not. May we all merit sensing the kedushah, and seeing the fulfillment of the ultimate light of the Geulah, as it says, “Im atem mishamrim neiros shel Shabbos, ani mareh lachem neiros shel Tzion.”

Shir Hashirim

All kesavim are holy, but Shir Hashirim is kodesh kadoshim. That is one reason why it is customarily said on Erev Shabbos, as the kedushah of Shabbos descends upon the world.

The following happened one Friday night when a circle of chassidim were in Mezeritch by the Maggid for Shabbos. They were sitting together and reviewing the Torah of their Rebbe, while in a separate room sat Reb Aharon of Karlin, his lips murmuring incessantly. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door and an attendant of the Maggid came in. “Where is Reb Aharon?” he asked. “The Rebbe requests that you stop saying Shir Hashirim. With your Shir Hashirim, you are shaking the Upper Spheres and our Rebbe cannot sleep!” When the holy Chasam Sofer took leave of his rebbe, Reb Nosson Adler, zt”l, Reb Nosson taught him two ways of saying Shir Hashirim. From that point on, the Chasam Sofer would say Shir Hashirim once a month, investing great preparations and deep concentration that made reciting it take a long time. Reb Nachum’ke of Horodna said that the holy Yesod V’shoresh Ha’avodah, Reb Alexander Ziskind, zt”l, wrote Shir Hashirim in his own ksav on a kosher megillah. Every Erev Shabbos, he would say it with fervor and d’veikus. His reading split the heavens, Reb Nachum’ke said, so much so that all the malachim would stop singing shirah so they could listen to the sweet sound of Reb Alexander’s Shir Hashirim. Much as the sanctified words of Shir Hashirim are veiled in mystery and can be understood on countless levels, so too are the deep reasons for reciting it at this time of the week.

W

W hen my cousin Dini was newly married, she had a lot on her plate. In addition to acquainting herself with the ins and outs of running a home, she had a full-time job and was taking classes to earn her degree. Having grown up with cleaning help, she was unaccustomed to having to do everything on her own, but living on a kollel budget did not allow for luxuries, and Dini was determined to make it work. The weeks they went to her parents or in-laws for Shabbos, Dini managed it all and felt like the ultimate housewife. Staying home for Shabbos, however, seemed to be a bit too much for her to handle. Being that her schedule was so full, Dini rushed around, huffing and puffing, until the very last minute, with her new husband trying his best to help. Of course, by the time she lit candles, the house sparkled and smelled delicious, with an oven full of Shabbos delicacies, but at that point, Dini was on the verge of collapse. One Friday, when her husband walked in to the usual Erev Shabbos chaos, Dini saw the look of disappointment on his face and decided, right then and there, to make a change. She didn’t know how or what, but she knew that next week would be different. She didn’t want to raise her family in a home where Erev Shabbos was a stress, and she knew the longer she waited, the harder it would be. That very Motzei Shabbos, Dini sat down with a pen and paper and wrote a list of every task that had to be completed for Shabbos. She then designated each one to a different day of the week, leaving for Friday only

Preparing for Shabbos was a now a pleasure instead of a pressure.

that which was absolutely necessary. With her limited free time, she thought it would be difficult, but as the week went on and she kept to her list, she realized that preparing for Shabbos was a now a pleasure instead of a pressure. Doing something for Shabbos each day of the week made her look forward to Shabbos in a way she never had before. Many people fall into the trap of saving everything for the last minute. They know that Shabbos comes every week and they know all the work that goes into getting to Shabbos, but they still leave too much for Friday. This is especially true when, like now, the days are very short and Shabbos begins so early. Shabbos never comes as a surprise, and aside from some changes to the menu and the amount of company we have, the preparations are the same from week to week. Make a detailed list of everything you do for Shabbos, and mark down the few items that must be

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 14, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

done on Friday. This may include baking challah, for those of you who like to do that on Erev Shabbos, and making any foods that your family only likes fresh. Most foods, though, really can be prepared in advance and kept either frozen or refrigerated until Shabbos, without affecting the taste at all. Many people have told me that there were foods they always assumed were only good fresh, until they experimented one time and no one noticed the difference. Even cholent can be prepared on Thursday. It can be refrigerated either completely raw or half-cooked, and then put back on the flame to finish on Friday. The same goes with chicken soup. All the vegetables can be prepared the day before you put up the soup, so even if you make your soup on Thursday, you can peel and trim your vegetables on Wednesday. Salad dressing is another thing that many people don’t think of preparing in advance. Though it only takes a few minutes to make, it is nice to know that it’s ready and waiting in your refrigerator, and you’ll be happy to save yourself from dirtying those utensils on Friday. Along with short Fridays comes long Motzei Shabbosos — use them to your advantage! As you’re putting away your Shabbos things, make sure everything is polished and ready to be used again the following week. Tablecloths, hand towels and any other Shabbos linens should be washed and put away on either Motzei Shabbos or Sunday. If you had guests for Shabbos, strip the beds and wash the linen right away, so you’re not scrambling to do it at the end of the week. When you remake the beds, go through the room and make sure everything is set for guests. The next time you have company you’ll be relaxed, with the knowledge that the room is already prepared. Monday is a good day for inviting guests and planning a menu, because on Tuesday the stores are quiet and you’ll do your grocery shopping in record time. Keep in mind, though, that you will have to go again later on in the week for fresh produce and bakery items. Your potential guests may not have a final answer for you yet, but getting the bulk of the shopping done on Tuesday is very beneficial. Wednesday is a good day to start cooking, though items that can be frozen can be made earlier in the week as well.

You may even find that cooking and baking when you’re not pressured for time will inspire you to make something a little fancier than you typically would, which your family will no doubt appreciate. If you have extra freezer space, it is very helpful to double any recipes that freeze well to have on hand for weeks when you’re really short on time or heavy on company. Save Thursday for your soup, cholent and any foods that have to be made closer to Shabbos. Try not to leave time-consuming recipes for Thursday; this is the day for last-minute things and cleaning rooms that are not heavily used on Friday. Don’t forget that any errands you save for Thursday, such as the cleaners or a quick grocery stop, will take longer than they would on other days, so if at all possible, try to

They know that Shabbos comes every week and they know all the work that goes into getting to Shabbos, but they still leave too much for Friday. take care of them earlier in the week. If you do not have cleaning help, let your children help you clean! Your kids should definitely be cleaning their own rooms, and even very young children can straighten up. The younger they are, the more excited they will be to help. This has the added benefit of having everyone involved in Shabbos preparations. The table should also be set on Thursday, and kids of all ages can certainly help with that. I find doing the table early on in the day gives everyone a boost, since once the table is set, the house already starts to feel like Shabbos. Bathing the kids or having them shower on Friday morning, before school, is another thing that helps the day go more smoothly. If your kids are early risers and don’t tend to get dirty on a short Friday, this will greatly enhance the flow of your day. Finish up the cholent and any items that were

left for Erev Shabbos. Prepare lunch for the kids before the kitchen is cleaned and, if possible, try to have it all done by the time they get home from school. Once they’re back, have them eat lunch on plastic, and then simply sweep, wipe down the table and prepare the kitchen for Shabbos. Don’t forget to set up the urn at this point; I find that many people only remember to do that at the very last minute. While you’re doing the kitchen, you can give your kids small jobs around the house, such as turning on Shabbos lamps and making sure alarm clocks are off. The hardest task of the day is keeping the kids occupied until Shabbos begins, especially if they’re bathed and you don’t want to have to redo that. However, if you’re calm and all ready for Shabbos, this will really be a pleasure, and you’ll find you look forward to and enjoy Friday afternoons. Make sure you start the getting-dressed process early enough so that everyone is ready a nice amount of time before you have to bentch licht. Don’t underestimate the time necessary, as this can cause stress, which is what we’re aiming to avoid! Once the kids are ready, set them up with a book or a nice quiet game while you finish up, putting the food to warm and making sure everything is just so. Then sit back and relax until Shabbos begins so you can go into Shabbos feeling that it’s the day of rest that it’s meant to be. Chaya Dym is a professional organizer serving Monsey and beyond. READ ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF NLP (Neuro – Linguistic Programming)

Anonymous, USA

I was very anxious about flying. Before any flight, especially the week preceding the flight, I used to experience the same thing: stomach aches, sleepless nights and general body tightness. I would also have periods of bad moods. With my medical background I was quite skeptical about anything that is considered a “quick fix”. After three NLP sessions however, I can honestly say I no longer experience any of these symptoms. Soon after this I had to fly to Israel and did not experience even one of the symptoms mentioned above. It was really weird; in fact I had a very restful sleep on the plane. I would like to thank Alex for his help in this troublesome area of my life and I will be sure to visit him again for any other anxiety-based problems. The NLP method that Alex uses is helpful for building selfesteem, positive life attitudes and relieving anxiety.

While studying in Yeshiva, I had a problem of frequently falling asleep in shiur. This was embarrassing and I missed a lot of material. I also had a problem of feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of life's responsibilities. I also felt that Yeshiva studies were making me tense. Alex offered to meet with me privately, to see if he could ease my pain. He was very patient and an excellent listener, asking me a number of interesting questions. We met on several occasions. My sessions with Alex helped me a great deal. I felt more energetic, less sleepy and much more relaxed. Most of the pressure I was experiencing went away. It was a pleasure working with Alex, and I am confident that he will help many people lead happier lives.

A new job, two mischievous toddlers and a cleaning lady gone missing made getting to Shabbos a weekly struggle. “I’m not gonna make it this week,” I would announce sometime midday on Friday, while catching up with my sister (who’d counter with similar woes). But somehow, each week, I did. I got there shaking, engine rattling, but I made it. And then, one Friday, the weekly prediction had a desperate edge to it. “I’m not gonna make it,” I groaned. This time it wasn’t light banter borne of habituallly negative brain messages. It was the call of a wounded bird. Of a ship in distress. Even my sister didn’t counter with her complaint, but rather asked, “What’s going on?” A lot was going on. Breaking into a demanding job meant a great deal was falling through a great many cracks. That Friday morning, while my kids were out, the hours were dedicated to finishing up some work-related emergencies. Finally, I dared enter my kitchen, and as I surveyed the food in various stages of rawness, I heard a beep outside. And with the beep came the jolting realization that my kids were home. Panting down two flights of steps, I ran to welcome them and tried to convince them to bring their tired little selves up the stairs, capitulating midway and bringing up one in each arm. My to-do list flashed before me in dizzying circles. There was the cooking; there was a scattered toy collection,

its far-reaching arms extending into the kitchen and under various beds; there was bathtime and cleaning; there was laundry to wash — and fold and iron! — and the clock was ticking its merry way toward Shabbos. I prepared a quick lunch and shuttled my two little fellows to the bedroom, cajoling them into bed and under their blankets so I could try to get a handle on the situation. Quite some time was spent trying to lull them to sleep, my pulse tingling, my brain demanding, my hands itching to get on task. It’s the best investment of time, I told myself as my son jumped up once again, giggling, and pounced right onto his brother — who had finally been showing signs of impending slumber. Some twenty minutes later I emerged from the room, my hyped-up charges in tow. It was a tug-of-war from there. Kugel into the oven, my pot collection unpacked onto the kitchen floor; a load into the washing machine, the basket filled with clean laundry used as a nest of sorts; two kids settled in the bath, the bath water splashing, gurgling, running... my downstairs neighbor calling about some suspicious drips on her bathroom ceiling. So I chugged on, one step back, one step forward, stopping only to call my husband every few minutes to ask him when he was expected back in town. My fish was up (at least we’d be the family with the freshest fish in Monsey!) when the oil bottle was found and became the object of merrymaking. That clinched it for me: There was no point in making headway in Shabbos preparation when the damage control would only set me back tenfold! Coats were donned and zipped up, and my two little rascals were shown the door. No convincing was needed as they made their way downstairs to wait for Tatty in the freedom of the outdoors. What a welcome sight the small white car was! Before my husband could get his bearings — or protest — I disappeared, informing him over my shoulder that he was tasked with the care of these delightful human beings until Shabbos would cast her serenity upon our humble abode. “When is the zman?” I hastily added, keeping a safe distance between the three of them and myself, lest there be a sudden case of buyer’s remorse on my husband’s part. He held up two fingers. “Shabbos starts

at 6:06.” He gunned the motor, and I was finally on my own. I ran up the stairs, determined to make the most of the two precious, insufficient hours I was left with to bring Shabbos into my home. Like a chicken without a head, came to mind. I finally comprehended the depths of this idiom as I ran from thing to thing, trying to focus on one task while my brain pulled me in a thousand directions at once. I sloppily cooked, hastily cleaned, stopped midway to answer the washing machine’s signal and throw the wet load into the dryer, returned to the kitchen, and then ran right back to retrieve the delicate clothes I’d meant to hang up. From task to task, I ran in circles, racing against the clock. Cholent up. (No soaked beans this week. I’m sorry, Mother.) Chicken soup up! (Chicken soup chicken will do; back into the freezer went the frozen chicken bottoms intended to be tonight’s baked chicken.) Eggs! Okay, easy does that, but it still took a few minutes to realize the profundity of the theory that a “watched pot never boils.” Shabbos laundry folded, stuffed into drawers. Toys packed away, stray pieces mixed into random bins. A race around the house with the vacuum cleaner ensued. And it was getting ever closer to Shabbos… I was about to run into the shower, when I remembered. “The blech!” I quickly ran to the kitchen, set up the food, leaving the flame under the pot of cholent high in order for it to have the requisite two-thirds-cooked status. Yanked two challos out of the freezer. There goes the oven. Oops, licht. My husband’s job, but he wouldn’t be showing his face before the zman. I quickly gathered everything and set it up. I eyed the clock. 5:58. No time for a shower. The realization set in with a horrid thud. A mad scramble for the muktzah items followed, and there I stood in my weekday clothes at 6:05 p.m., my heart heavy, my thoughts whirling, my throat constricting, facing the fact that the time to welcome

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Shabbos was now. As I was. Tears came to my eyes. Dejected, I went to get a box of matches. This is not how I want to welcome Shabbos! Everything in me protested. In a hurried frenzy, dressed in weekday clothes, home perhaps clean, but lacking the Shabbos glow. “Hashem,” I cried, holding the match up to strike a flame. “I feel unworthy of doing this special mitzvah of hadlakas neiros. Please... Give me the zchiyah of being mekabel Shabbos with serenity, in the right mood, with sufficient preparation. Hashem, please help me avoid this disgrace in the future. I am so embarrassed to welcome Shabbos like this... so ashamed in front of You.” I struck a match, and the phone rang. I paused, listening to the caller’s name. My husband’s cell phone. He wants to make sure I’m tzinding on time. There’s a half a minute left. I’ll quickly pick up to reassure him I made it. Well, sort of. “Hello.” My voice was choked with unshed tears, with regret. “Did you manage?” he asked cheerily. “I guess…” I answered, looking down at my clothes. “No shower, last night’s will have to do, and… I’m not dressed, but yes, I am about to tzind. Gut Shabbos!” “Go take a shower.” He delivered the line with gusto. “Shabbos today starts at 6:36.” “What?” “Yes, I realized my mistake shortly after I told you the time, but knowing how things usually go… I figured that this half hour will be much more precious if you learn about it once all the must-dos are out of the way.” A half hour later, I stood before the Shabbos licht, showered and dressed, my floor freshly washed, my kids in the background, dressed in their Shabbos best. And with a sense of peace, I covered my eyes to welcome Shabbos.

Finally, I dared enter my kitchen and surveyed the food in various stages of rawness.

CREATING AN OHEL

What kind of hats may one wear on Shabbos? The Gemara forbids wearing certain types of hats on Shabbos,1 and there is a machlokes as to the reason. One opinion says it is assur because it is considered making an ohel above one's head.2 Even though in many cases making an ohel is only assur if one also makes the walls for it, here, since one wears it for protection from the sun, rain, etc. just merely wearing the hat without creating walls is assur.3 The other opinion says the reason for this issur is not because of the halachos related to an ohel, since an ohel that is made through wearing it is not assur. Rather, it is assur because it may get blown away by the wind, and one may then come to carry it.4 There are halachic differences between the two opinions. According to the opinion that holds it to be assur because of ohel, then if the brim does not measure one tefach, or even if it does measure a tefach, but is made from a soft material, then it is muttar to wear on Shabbos, while according to the opinion that says it is assur because one may come to carry it, it remains assur to wear on Shabbos in a reshus harabim. There are other cases where there are halachic differences between the two opinions. For example, if one wears the hat in a reshus hayachid or place with an eiruv, or if one has a tight-fitting hat (which can withstand a common wind), there would not be a chashash of coming to violate the melacha of carrying, and one may thus wear it according to the opinion that holds that a hat is assur to wear on Shabbos because it may lead to carrying. However, these factors would bear no difference according to the opinion that holds it is assur because it is an ohel. The halachah is machmir like both opinions, so one should not wear a hat that has a hard brim and measures one tefach, even if one is in a reshus hayachid and it is tightly fit.5 Furthermore, one may not wear a loose-fitting hat on Shabbos, even if the brim measures less than one tefach, in a reshus harabim, lest it fly away and one may then come to carry it.6 It must be pointed out that the minhag is to wear black hats with a one-tefach brim. There are different reasons given for this minhag; some say it is because these hats are worn for style and not for shade or protection, so it is muttar to wear them on Shabbos, even when its brim does

128 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 14, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

measure a tefach — as long as it is tightly fit, or worn within a proper eiruv.7 Others say the minhag is to rely on the opinion that it is not assur because of creating an ohel on Shabbos, but rather because one may come to carry it.8 Therefore, when it is tightly fit, tied on or worn within a proper eiruv, one may wear it. Hats that women commonly wear on top of their sheitels as a chumrah of having a second covering are of no concern when it comes to the issur of ohel, since they do not have a brim that measures one tefach. But in order it should be muttar to wear them in a reshus harabim or any place without 1 Shabbos 138b an eiruv, one must make sure 2 Rambam, Tosfos, Rabthey are tight enough that they beinu Chananel can withstand a ruach metzuyah 3 See Mishnah Berurah (common wind).9 315:152 May one open, close or use an umbrella on Shabbos? The poskim assur using an umbrella on Shabbos for a number of reasons.10 Some say it is assur because of the issur of making an ohel. Even though holding up a sheet over one’s head is not considered making an ohel since it is held up by one’s hand, an umbrella is assur because it retains its shape even without one’s hands holding it up.11 Others suggest that opening it is considered metaken ma’ne (fixing), or uvdin d’chol.12 Practically speaking, the poskim assur not only opening and closing an umbrella, but even using it when it was opened from before Shabbos. Therefore, an umbrella is considered muktzah.13

You may never have given much thought to the foods we eat week in and week out. They not only carry strong links to our past, but also a wealth of depth, potential and segulos. Here is but a sampling… Serving as a separation between fish and meat, soup — a symbol of a rich meal — is served. Inside the soup, the long lokshen strands twist around each other, symbolizing Shabbos “shalom.” The word luksh (lamed-kufshin) stands for “l’kavod Shabbos Kodesh.” Beans imply mourning, as a remembrance to Moshe Rabbeinu who was niftar on Shabbos.

Some rule that eating fish, one of the most focal of Shabbos foods, is a mitzvah d’Oraisa! It is reminiscent of the Livyasan and has the potential for tikkun neshamos.

The complete course of soup, lokshen and beans contains within it the Shem Havaya.

Eating fish is a segulah for banei, chayei and mezonei, because of its nature of proliferating, getting stronger as it ages, and bringing on wealth — as in the story of Yosef Moker Shabbos.

Tzimmes, or a side dish, is a zecher of the chardal that was eaten together with the meat of the karbanos. Some eat carrots, which Reb Meir of Premishlan used to call “goldene rendlach,” symbolizing parnassah b’revach. Others eat farfel, indicating that one’s aveiros should be “farfallen,” as Shabbos is a time of forgiveness.

Made from feet of chicken or meat, “p’tzeh” or “galarita” indicates that Shabbos has the power to lift the lowest of the low. P’tzeh stands for “Amcha Yisroel tzrichim parnassah.”

Kugel is served as an extra, a special food for Shabbos. It can be read as “k’igel,” like igul — as in the description of the mahn. It has a top and bottom crust, just like the dew that encased the mahn from above and below. On Shabbos Rosh Chodesh, or other Shabbosos when we read from more than one Sefer Torah, it is customary to add another kugel. Eating kugel — l’kavod Shabbos — is actually a more ruchniyus’dig act than you may have thought! The Bnei Yissaschar writes that it is placed on the side of zechusim, and the Chozeh posits that there is a special heichal for the Yid who ate kugel!

Though compote may seem an “old-fashioned” dessert, it in fact holds traditional value, too! Made from apple, “tapuach,” whose letters can be jumbled to read, “poseach,” this food signifies parnassah b’revach. It also holds kabbalistic reference to the tefillah of Maariv on Friday night, where we daven “…tapuchin kiddushin.”

Once again a siman aveilus for Moshe Rabbeinu who was niftar on Shabbos, eggs are also a segulah for parnassah. A play on words on the egg course: “Beitz im (eggs; meaning ‘ask Him’) batzalim (onions; meaning ‘to repay us’) with kavod (liver; meaning ‘in a respectable manner’). The eggs are eaten specifically together with onions to complete the taste of the mahn, which was able to taste like everything but onion and garlic. “Batzal” (onion) can also be translated as “shadow,” to remind us never to forget that we are in the shadow of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Liver, fondly called “leberlach” in old-fashioned Yiddish, reminds the Yid to “live ehrlich.”

Perhaps the holiest of all Shabbos foods, cholent, disproves the Tzidokim who maintained it was forbidden to keep foods warm on Shabbos. Thus, eating cholent indicates that a person is not an apikoros and eating it instills emunah within him. Cholent also references the mahn. During the week, mahn was received fresh every day. But on Shabbos, the Yidden ate mahn that had “overnighted” since collection on Friday, which actually improved its taste. Many of the Shabbos foods we eat have a numerical value of 7. Dag (fish) is 3 plus 4. The mispar katan of marak (soup), basar (meat), and yayin (wine) are all 7 as well.

The missionary center in Israel

Great work, Gavriel. You managed to transfer the money in time. Because of you we were able to move the children before the antimissionary organization got to us. Next week we’ll hold a conversion ceremony for them.

I came to get all of the organization’s documents because I want to continue to partner with you and help you.

Of course! You can check out anything! What? Are you sure this is Gavriel in the photo you took on the night of the robbery at the factory?

Abba, come see where he spends his evenings. Maybe we’ll discover his partners.

Here’s the building.

I trusted him so much, and he destroys my factory?

I think he also transferred money to fund the children’s escape.

Don’t get carried away!

Thief! Criminal!!

Go up, quickly!

G-A-V-R-I-E-L!!! Good, I’ll take the documents and return them tomorrow.

You won’t get away from me! What are these documents?

Recap: The children leave the country, causing the mission to fail. In Israel, Gavriel is suspected for funding the escape.

For who in the greater Monsey community hasn’t heard of this renowned tzedakah! Satmar Bikur Cholim of Monsey, founded over a decade ago, is modeled after the memory of the legendary paragon of Chesed, Rebetzin Alta Feige Teitelbaum O”H. It has been dubbed “one long chain of “Ahavas Chesed and Kiddush Hashem”. Devoted and selfless Satmar Bikur Cholim volunteers bring hot, nourishing meals daily to all major hospitals throughout New York and New Jersey and so much more. By far, the most vital service that Satmar Bikur Cholim provides is financial assistance to cover the staggering cost of medical bills, co-pays for insurance, therapies, camp funds, doctor and hospital bills, distributed to families facing a crisis as well as our world famous Kimpeturn Fund. It is this fund which provides the new mother with an opportunity to get some rest to enable her to continue caring for her family. To accommodate the growing needs of our expanding community we desperately need your help! Every dollar received in donations is spent exclusively to help local patients and their families keep their heads above water. This coming Sunday, November 18th, Satmar Bikur Cholim of Monsey will be having its annual event at the home of our gracious hostess, Mrs. Fraidy Lefkowitz , 21 Dorset Rd. Spring Valley, N.Y. Fraidy will be honored with the “Hakoras Hatoiv Award”, for opening her home and heart for the vital cause of Satmar Bikur Cholim “Boine Oilom Bekinyan, Hashlem Ze Habinyon”! The party is dedicated Leilu Nishmas her great grandfather R’ Simcha Isachar ben Izhak Eizik “OH”, (please put all in Hebrew like on the invitation with the adjectives”) . Rebetzin Esther D. Oppenheim will be honored with the “Keser Shem Tov Award” in recognition of a legendary Mechaneches who affected the lives of thousands of students with her warmth, caring, extraordinary brilliance and outstanding Middos. The Humanitarian award will be presented to Dobra Baila Errera, Chaplain, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, for her exemplary courage, faith and compassion to the many patients she assists daily. A true woman of Valor! Last but not least, Yitti is back! With her new version of “Yentateinment”, which will sure be a hit! As every year, a lavish milchig buffet and musical accompaniment will enhance this unforgettable afternoon. A Satmar Bikur Cholim party is not just any occasion – with exceptional décor, food for the palate, and nourishment to the soul, it is sure to leave you inspired, entertained and grateful for the blessings in your life. It’s a gift that keeps giving! Looking forward to greeting you personally. Don’t miss it!
