State-wide power outage following major storms last year was the major factor in a 30 per cent reduction in six-monthly copper output at Olympic Dam, BHP Billiton has confirmed. In the company’s half yearly op-

erational review released last week, BHP Billiton said Olympic Dam copper production had decreased to 78kt for the December 2016 half year, impacted by the power blackouts as well as planned maintenance. Storms on 28 September resulted in damage to powerlines across

South Australia, with power not restored to Olympic Dam until mid-October. “Power was safely restored on 14 October 2016 and operations were fully ramped-up in the December 2016 quarter,” the operational review said. BHP Billiton has revised its pro-

duction target for Olympic Dam for the remainder of the financial year, saying copper production of “approximately 160kt to 170kt” was now expected. Unplanned maintenance undertaken at the site’s refinery, starting at the end of December 2016, would also affect production volumes, the

company said. With lower volumes expected at Olympic Dam, the performance of BHP Billiton’s Copper group (which also includes the Escondida, Antamina, Pampe Norte assets) was also revised, with copper production revised to approximately 1.62MT, a two per cent fall.

inister for Mineral Resources a n d E n e rg y To m Koutsantonis’ response to the Roxby Downs Governance Review report was the major talking point at last week’s Roxby Council meeting. In the first Ordinary Council Meeting of 2017, Acting Administrator Geoff Whitbread said Mr Koutsantonis had received the report last December and had made recommendations based on that document. “He has agreed there needs to be separate

roles for the administrator and chief executive officer (CEO) and there will be a decision on these two roles at a future date,” Mr Whitbread said at the meeting. Only one administrator will be appointed alongside the CEO, rather than the two suggested as a medium term recommendation in the Governance Review. The administrator will meet with the public to make decisions, while the CEO will be responsible to the administrator, and the chairs of forums will make up the Community Board. Meanwhile, the Roxby Downs Reference Group is set to be disbanded. “Long-term the minis-

ter wants to have a fully elected council, but that won’t happen in the next three years,” Mr Whitbread said. Council’s Fees and Charges Register was another agenda item, discussing alterations that had been made to it, as occurs on an annual basis, because of utilities price changes. The other items on the agenda included the Roxby Water 2017 Pricing Policy statement and the discussion of a regional economic growth and investigation strategy. SA He alth’s S afe Drinking Water Act audit and Roxby Downs inspection report was also discussed with Mr Whitbread explaining

RDAS returns positive results Former RDAS student Maddie Bourne checks her year 12 results from last year.

ast year was another successful one for year 12 students graduating from Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS), with all recording satisfying results.

RDAS Senior School Co-ordinator Lee Copeland said all students had achieved their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) goals and for those so inclined, received university offers. Lachlan Baker received the school’s highest ATAR, with a score of 89.3, and accepted an offer from Flinders University to study Medical Science. Tate Daddow received the second highest score, and also accepted an offer from Flinders University to study Information Technologies (Network) (Honours). RDAS 2016 graduate Maddie Bourne was among those who completed her SACE last year and said her results were better than she thought they would be. “I was pleased with my results yes, I was actually quite surprised,” Maddie told The Monitor. “We were in the car in Queensland when we found out and Mum was really happy for me and proud, and Dad was happy with the results as well.” However she said she wasn’t planning on using her ATAR right away, currently working

at the Roxby Downs Child Care Centre and studying her Certificate II in early childhood. Mr Copeland said it was pleasing to see so many of the graduating year 12 class achieving their SACE and doing so through a wide range of programs as well as the usual traditional subjects. “2016 saw another busy year at Roxby Downs Area School, with a large number of students participating in a variety of new programs contributing to their SACE completion,” he said. “School Based Apprenticeships have continued to play a large part of the SACE for many senior students, with 21 students engaging in this program. “This allows the students to complete their SACE with a combination of traditional school based subjects, while attending one or more days in the workplace. “A large number of students continued to utilise VET (Vocational Education) as a part of the SACE, with courses including Certificate II and III in Fitness, Engineering and Construction.” Mr Copeland said the community had played a big part in these courses by providing outstanding support with work placement opportunities for students. With a new school year starting on Monday, he said the school was looking forward to 2017 and continuing to develop a variety of programs to engage senior students, and help them continue to achieve positive results.

Llewellyn nominated for SA award

R

oxby Downs’ Llewellyn Secker has been nominated for the Santos Regional Service Award as part of the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards.

The nomination comes for her work arranging a family fun day, at the age of 11, to raise money for the RSPCA and mistreated animals - the fundraiser resulting in a $7,000 donation to the RSPCA. She also helps her family organise the Roxby Community Postie Bash which raises funds for the local hospital, schools, kindergarten and youth centre, among others. On the eve of her move to boarding school in Adelaide last week, Llewellyn was shocked at the news of her nomination. “It was really unexpected, I am just lost for words,” she said. “But I am really excited, it is pretty cool to be nominated for an award like this.” Llewellyn has been involved in community events and fundraisers from a very young age, always happy to help her mother and father with their efforts. The 14-year-old also helps coach a junior basketball side,

along with playing and taking part in netball and dance. Her sporting ability has even seen Llewellyn make representative teams for both netball and basketball. She said she is already thinking about what groups or fundraisers she can get involved with when she makes the transition to Adelaide. “I’m just going to get settled first then see if I can help with something like a big sister program, I am always happy to help kids younger than me,” she said. “I could do tutoring or something like that, use the boarding house to do fundraisers, but until I get there I have no idea what they have to offer.” Llewellyn said she is looking forward to making the move to Adelaide for school which will also give her a wider variety of sporting opportunities. Nominations for the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards will be judged on Thursday, March 16 before finalists will be presented and winners announced at a gala presentation dinner at the Hilton, Adelaide on Friday, April 28. Roxby tavern re-opens following storm damage T he Roxby Downs Tavern is back up and running at full capacity after suffering significant damage during a recent storm. The local venue suffered major ceiling damage and food stock loss after water leaked through the roof and power was lost to the building.

Venue manager Trevor Grenfell said the power outages had caused the closure of the kitchen for a short period, but they had done everything possible to continue servicing the Roxby Downs community. “We’ve tried everything to ensure we can still service our customers through the Oasis Restaurant kitch-

day, January 20, which saw Roxby Downs record 25.5 millimetres (mm) of rain in a 12 hour period, even receiving 9mm in a ten-minute burst between 1.20am and 1.30am. hree State titles, record numbers at the annual night meet and a successful day meet have seen the Roxby Desert Motocross Club (RDMXC) win the Sports Organisation of the Year award at Roxby Downs’ Australia Day awards ceremony last Thursday.

Last year, which also saw the club celebrate its 21st birthday, was a big one for the club both on and off the track, with the number of active members increasing to its greatest in more than 18 months. “The night meets, the big events we do and our focus on junior development - to get recognition for that is great,” said RDMXC President Clint Gow-Smith. “But this one (award) is for everyone including the sponsors, members and the helpers not just a few people on the committee, it is great to be able to share these kind of things with all those people.” Last year also saw the RDMXC name spread around South Australia with two State title winners. Taj Gow-Smith took out the 65cc 10-u12 and 85cc 9-u12 titles, while Trent Smits won the Motocross 1 Clubman category to really put the RDMXC on the map. With 2017 already underway, Gow-Smith said the club has hit the ground running, holding its Annual General Meeting last week and

already looking forward to some new ideas this year. He said with all the new members it was great to have a range of different views for the upcoming season. Gow-Smith said he would like to thank the Roxby Council and the Roxby Downs Sport and Recreation Forum for the nomination and for putting on the Australia Day celebration. “These days are great and while the award winners don’t do what they do for a pat on the back, it is an opportunity to recognise people in a lot of different areas,” he said.

Citizen of the year an “angel” WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

S

he has been described as an “angel without wings” and the Roxby Downs community agreed, naming Deb Price as its 2017 Citizen of the Year last Thursday. This latest gong caps off an outstanding 12 months for Mrs Price, whose highlights of 2016 included being awarded the Premier’s Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Last year was a busy one for her, being named a finalist in the South Australian Regional Awards, second highest fundraiser in SA’s World’s Greatest Shave (raising more than $11,000) and highest individual fundraiser for Bank SA’s Community Sleep Out. “I am absolutely over the moon, so excited to have won this award,” she said. “It is a big honour receiving this award, out of all the awards that I have won, this tops it off. “Most of what I do I am doing for people in this town and to have those people present here today means a lot.” She is an active volunteer with RoxFM with her own show, a past board member, treasurer of the Roxby Downs Royal Flying Doctor Service Auxiliary, and organises hampers for locals in need around Christmas time.

Program more than healthy eating

Mrs Price becomes the third generation from her family to claim an Australia Day award with daughter Peta Berryman winning the Citizen of the Year in Woomera in the past, and granddaughter Tamika Berryman taking out Roxby’s Young Sportsperson of the Year two years ago. “It is pretty incredible to be able to share such an honour with my family like that,” she said. She congratulated the other award winners and said it was “truly amazing” to be recognised with other community members of this calibre.

Desert Dash’ decade honored

I

n a nod to its success in getting people out and active for nearly a decade, the Roxby Downs Desert Dash was named as the Community Event of the Year at Roxby Downs’ Australia Day Awards.

The award was collected by Scott Humphries, who is the dash’s current chairperson and has been with the event since its inception seven years ago. “This is the seventh year of the dash, but we actually started it all ten years ago,” Mr Humphries said. “After the big rains about ten years ago, we thought it would be perfect to have a triathlon with the swim out at Lake Mary. “In the end we weren’t able to use the road so we ended up having the triathlon around Roxby and the swim leg in the pool.” The triathlon was held for three years but proved to be a great deal of work for a small committee and falling participant numbers, and eventually evolved into the Desert Dash, a fun run/walk

around the outskirts of Roxby Downs. With more than 200 people participating each year, Mr Humphries believed the secret to the Desert Dash’s success was its inclusiveness, with children and adults across all ages and abilities participating.

“There is a competitive side to it, but it is really a family event,” he said. Saying the Australia Day Award was a “big surprise”, Mr Humphries added that the event would continue in 2017 and beyond, as long as there was a strong committee in place to support it.

s well as the health benefits, the Community Foodies Program has given local Kelly Reid another little bonus.

Ms Reid was named Roxby Downs’’Young Citizen of the Year for her heavy involvement with the new food program that was introduced last year. She was one of the first to receive training in the program and has since volunteered to run and facilitate activities including with school holiday groups, as part of wellbeing week and a sugar in drinks demonstration. “I do it because I enjoy it, I like helping people and teaching them about the four key messages around healthy eating,” Ms Reid said. Her knowledge has been extended beyond just activities, also helping with the Fab Figures Weight Loss group late last year and running a number of market day stalls around the program. When she isn’t promoting the foodie program or working at roxbylink, she is playing or coaching her under 13 side in netball. Having lived in Roxby for 25 years, since before she could walk, Ms Reid has grown up around watching her mother’s heavy involvement with the Olympic Dam Sporting Club and Roxby Downs Netball Association. “Mum was on the netball committee for a number of years so I have seen people vol-

unteer so that I could play netball growing up,” she said. “If no one volunteers, then no one gets to play netball, so I volunteer to coach because I want the younger kids now to have the same opportunities I had.” She said to win the award alongside Deb Price was an honour and also congratulated Jasmine Tovakuta who won the Junior Sports Person of the Year award. “Deb does so much for the community so she thoroughly deserves to be recognised for her efforts,” Ms Reid said. “Jasmine is a pocket rocket which you can see when it comes to sport, so she deserves her award as well.” Roxby’s Young Citizen of the Year, Kelly Reid.

Talented athlete earns accolades WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

L

ocal junior sportswoman Jasmine Tovakuta has shown her immense talent by taking out the Young Sports Person of the Year Award last week.

The 14-year-old has had to juggle her sport along with work, school and coaching in the past 12 months but has shown she is more than capable, having just played in the under-16 State country basketball side. Although one of the younger squad members, Jasmine still got a lot of court time during her side’s run to the grand final at the recent Australian Junior Country Basketball Carnival. The modest young athlete said she was shocked when she heard her name called out, but the award shows her talent has not gone unrecognised. “It was pretty cool to win the award but I didn’t really expect it, it was a bit of a surprise,” Jasmine said. “I had people coming up congratulating me saying well deserved, some people I didn’t even know.”

While basketball has taken precedence in recent times, she is also a more than capable netballer, taking out the most improved award for the Olympic Dam B grade side last year. She was also selected in the under-14 Spencer Gulf Academy netball team as well last year, but chose to pursue basketball instead.

Monitor OPINION The

EDITORIAL By Patrick Glover

What a day! It was great to see so many people turn out for the Australia Day celebrations at the roxbylink pool complex last Thursday. The town certainly seems to be picking up again with around 630 people coming along to celebrate and recognise the efforts of some special people within the town, as well as the grand opening of the highly anticipated splash pad. There were a number of familiar faces as well as some new ones but to be able to walk around and stop and mingle with so many people made for a great morning. Congratulations to all the award winners, all very deserving of the recognition.

Deb Price, an “angel without wings” as Roxby Council Acting Administrator Geoff Whitbread put it, is an apt description of the 2017 Citizen of the Year – she does so much for Roxby Downs. Meanwhile Kelly Reid has lived in Roxby Downs for her entire life, and took out the Young Citizen of the Year award category - there are not too many people that know the town as well as her, or do as much as she does. The Olympic Dam Barbarians continue to go from strength to strength and after finishing their first season undefeated and bringing home the Spencer Gulf Rugby League TEC Cup, and I could think of no other local team more deserving of the sports club award. The Desert Dash, the Community Event

of the Year award winner, is well and truly embedded in Roxby Downs’ calendar these days with large numbers turning out each year. You need look no further than the streets or gyms of Roxby Downs to see how popular it is, with a variety of years’ gone by Desert Dash singlets wandering around town. Speaking of major events, the Motocross Club’s night meet is definitely up there as one of the most anticipated events in town. Put this together with the two State title winners they currently claim and the growing numbers of juniors taking part, and it is no wonder they received the Sporting Organisation of the Year award. For those in local sporting circles, I’m sure everyone will agree that not many people in town do more work for a sport

than Regina Qualmann and Linda Evans, who were both named joint Sportsperson of the Year Award winners. Last but not least, of all the people that were there on the day to receive their awards, Jasmine Tovakuta – a young quiet achiever - is thoroughly deserving of her Young Sportsperson of the Year award. To cap the day off the splash pad was a huge hit, not just amongst the little kids, but also with the bigger ones too. It was great after watching the construction for a few months now to finally see large numbers of locals flock to the latest attraction in town. While it is closed again for now, locals have now had a taste and will be keen for more splash pad action in the coming months when it re-opens permanently.

Back to School Has your child just started school? Perhaps they have joined a new school this year or are simply transitioning with all the unknowns of a new class, teacher and grade. Whilst we tend to be able to recall our difficult experiences a little quicker than our happiest times in school, it is important to be enthusiastic as children need our assurance that they will cope with navigating new territory. If they want to tell you every detail of their day try to give them your focus and attention, and if they don’t, try asking them to tell you their favourite experience of the day. A really important way to begin building the home-school connection is to start forming a relationship with the teacher early. This supports effective communication between school and home and models for your child that their teacher is a safe, approachable person. Local reception teachers at RDAS and St Barbs believe one of the most important ways parents can support their children is to connect with their teacher. They said parents can equip teachers with information to support new students confidentially via email or appointments. Helpful information may include emotional or behavioural struggles, strategies that are working well for parents at home, causes of stress or anxiety in student’s lives that parents want teachers to be aware of and their child’s interests. This year the reception teachers at RDAS will have 3 way interviews with parents and students in weeks 4 and 5 to connect with families and build shared understanding. St Barbs hold a ‘Bottle and Plate Night’ to provide parents with an opportunity to chat with teachers and a ‘getting to know you’ survey for parents to fill out about their children at the beginning of term. This helps with planning for student’s social, emotional and academic success. Find more tips at www.raisingchildren.net.au

ndividual council dog and cat registers will soon be a thing of the past, with an online State-wide portal for cat and dog management to go live next year.

Currently each of South Australia’s 68 councils, including Roxby Downs, manage their own unique dog or cat registration system, with microchip, breeder and vet information held by private companies. The new portal, set to launch in July next year, will allow pet owners to register their dogs and cats, update their details, and have an option to pay online and receive reviewal and reminder notices electronically via email or Short Message Service (SMS). A Roxby Council spokes-

person said they were “pleased to hear about the initiative”. “The local population is incredibly transient and this system will provide convenience to pet owners no matter where they move to or from in South Australia,” the spokesperson said. The new register – called D og s and C at s Online (DACO) – is expected to provide significant savings for councils by eliminating duplication and postage costs. It is also expected to reduce “puppy farms” and other unethical breeding businesses. Specifications for the new system are being developed in consultation with councils, vets and breeders, and tenders are expected to be called early this year.

Volunteer of the month – nominate today!

T

The

Monitor

he Volunteer of the Month program, which aims to recognise and acknowledge volunteers (individuals or families) who make a significant contribution to the Roxby Downs community, is now open for nominations for 2017.

Since the program’s inception in 2008, numerous worthy community volunteers have been recognised for their selfless contributions and, in addition, they have been awarded with a $100 donation to a charity

of their choice. Volunteers contribute to everyday life in Roxby Downs, perhaps more than many realise. The successful running of sporting clubs, Arid Recovery, scouts, local churches, community events and many other facets of a community is driven by the passion of volunteer groups and individuals. Volunteerism in Roxby Downs is widespread, with an independent study conducted by BHP Billiton in 2012 showing 47 per cent of respondents in Roxby Downs had volunteered, compared to the nation’s

average of 36 per cent. Quite often people do it effortlessly day in, day out and they often hold down full time jobs. Put your votes in, let people be recognised for the things they do! The program is supported by Beyond Bank, the Roxby Downs Volunteering Forum and The Monitor. To nominate a community member, collect a nomination form from the Visitor Info Centre or contact Ines Badman on 8671 0500 or email Ines.Badman@roxbylink.com.au

New year, new library faces

I

t’s the start of another year and Roxby’s Community Library has some fresh, enthusiastic faces.

Susanne Parker recently joined the team as Library Assistant and is already enjoying the vibrant atmosphere at roxbylink. “I love meeting new families and enjoy helping people find what they need,” Mrs

Parker said. Her children are avid readers and she is passionate about early literacy. The Community Library runs a variety of programs throughout the year. Toddler Storytime is a very popular program offered in conjunction with the Roxby Downs Health Service. It is run for children up to five years of age and combines singing, dancing, craft and a story.

This year the program will run at 9.30am on a Tuesday and be repeated on Friday. Parent/caregiver supervision is required and it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet other families. The theme for term one, 2017 is “All creatures great and small”. For further information please contact the Community Library on 8671 0500.

New citizens

R

oxby Council would like to congratulate Maretha Potgieter and the Chawda family on becoming Australian citizens in a ceremony held in the council boardroom on January 5, 2017.

Monitor NEWS The

New Roxby Early Learning Community Group Director Beth Frankish with children from the centre.

Beth returns to early childhood passion WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

en months after making her way back to the Roxby Early Learning Community Group, Gail Reid is leaving her role at the local childcare centre. The founding director of the centre returned last April after two years away from the position, but is now relocating to her home town in the mid-north. “I am going to miss working here

with the children,” she told The Monitor. “The thing I have enjoyed most is the families and building relationships with parents as well as the kids. “Coming back I got the opportunity to see kids that were babies when I left that are now getting ready to go to kindy. “It has been really good building relationships with new families and new staff.” Mrs Reid is going to be replaced by Beth Frankish who makes a return to the early childhood scene

after a number of years out of the field. Mrs Frankish has 20 years of experience in Queensland as an early childhood educator, ten of those as a director, and is looking forward to returning to her main line of work. “I wasn’t thinking about coming back but I thought it’s where I need to be, early childhood is not a job, it’s a passion and you don’t lose it,” she said. “I have some big shoes to fill, I have only worked with Gail for a few days but she is amazing, I have

already learnt a number of things from her. “But I am getting more and more excited with every day that passes.” Mrs Frankish said she was keen to begin working and building relationships with the families involved in the centre’s community, as well as ensuring the children experience the highest quality education program. Mrs Reid said her successor would be inheriting a highly professional staff and was thankful for all the work they had done for her

since her return last year. Since April 2016 the number of children using the centre has doubled, which was something Mrs Reid was proud of and is sure Mrs Frankish will continue to build on. However, Mrs Reid said she wouldn’t miss the transient nature of the town and number of new staff members and families she has experienced in the past. The transition was completed on Monday, with Mrs Frankish taking over permanently and Mrs Reid saying her final farewells last Friday.

New school year brings new faces to town T he start of a new school year usually brings a number of fresh faces to Roxby Downs schools, and this year is no different.

As well as the new students that began on Monday, a number of new teachers have also started at both Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS) and St Barbara’s Parish School. RDAS welcomed 18 new teachers this year, while St Barbara’s has two fresh faces amongst its teaching team. RDAS Principal Steve Bennett said he was excited about the fresh new team he had educating the school’s students in 2017. The new teachers come from a

wide range of backgrounds, with a number taking up their first teaching positions, to others that have been in the education system for a number of years. New RDAS year 3/4 teacher Mel Jones is one of the more experienced staff making the move, with seven years of experience across schools in Port Lincoln and Leigh Creek. Ms Jones made the move to Roxby Downs to be with her partner who recently accepted a job on site at Olympic Dam. “I have always worked in area schools and they are always more inclusive than city schools, whether it be between teachers, parents or the community – everyone knows

everyone, I love it,” she said. RDAS Special Education teacher Kiara Yates is both new to town and education, having just graduated from Flinders University. Ms Yates said she is looking forward to the challenge of her first full time position and becoming a part of the community. Adrian Friedel is also taking up his first teaching position, having been awarded the role of year 7-10 Humanities and Social Sciences and science teacher. Mr Friedel is no stranger to Roxby Downs after working as the Green Army team leader last year at Arid Recovery. He said it was great to be back and was keen to integrate his knowledge www.themonitor.com.au

of the surrounding environment and arid zones into his teaching. Rachael Markham and Teagan Mudge are the two new teachers at St Barbara’s and are both undertaking their first full time employment. Ms Mudge did some relief work with the school and Andamooka Primary School in term four last year so already has a feel for the town, with Ms Markham saying she is looking forward to getting settled in to her role and the Roxby Downs lifestyle. “Everyone has been really welcoming and really friendly, it is a great place to start out,” Ms Markham said. “It is going to be a great place to develop my skills in a highly sup-

portive environment and with some great teachers to learn from.” Both fresh out of university, the pair said they were hoping to bring a new enthusiasm to the classroom and help continue building relationships between the school and the community. St Barbara’s Principal Bernadette Lacey welcomed all the staff and wished them all good luck. “I’m very excited about the planned education direction that St Barbara’s is heading in 2017,” Mrs Lacey said. “I am looking forward to gathering as a school community with the parents and teachers at our Bottle ‘n’ Plate event tomorrow.” BY PATRICK GLOVER

After previously playing in the C grade division in 2016, this year saw the local side play in a combined B and C grade. “There was a lot of new competition this year which challenged us,” team spokesperson Todd Paull said. The revised format saw the top four teams separate to play B grade finals, while the bottom teams went on to play in the C grade finals. On Saturday, the first two games were

tightly contested with the Roxby Downs side suffering losses with small margins to Eastern Hills (39-37) and Whyalla (45-42). The third round was a different story, with Roxby defeating SYPBA 75-50. “We were out in front for the while game and were able to get everyone involved in some nice plays,” Paull said. Sunday saw the finals kick off with Roxby Downs playing against Willunga and take a 44-36 win. “The first final on Sunday morning came down to us playing against Willunga, with the winner going to the B grade finals and the loser to the C grade,” Paul said. “We started off strongly and kept a consistent lead throughout.”

Roxby then faced off against Whyalla for a berth in the grand final. “Whyalla had a really good start and it cost us, but we fought back and had a solid fourth quarter to finish the carnival strongly, only losing by ten points,” Paull said. Whyalla went on to take out the B grade grand final. Paull said he was pleased with Roxby’s performance at the championships. “Overall the carnival was a success for us. I think we will learn from it and come back stronger,” he said. “Thanks to the players and everyone that came to watch and help score for us.” The team will now look to field a side in the June carnival in the Barossa Valley.

Glover heads overseas with cricket skills

CONTINUED FROM BACK PAGE “They are putting all of their eggs in the one basket with me which is a bit of pressure, but it will be very exciting and a good challenge to go over there and hopefully experience some success with them.” While Glover has always been known as a fast bowler, he has been able to develop his batting skills while playing for Olympic Dam, which he believes contributed to his selection for the Mochdre club. “I believe they were looking for a bowler that bats a bit,” he said. “I started off as a fast bowler but since I moved up here I’ve become a bit of a batter as well, so that’s been handy. “I’ve been able to make a few runs playing for OD to go with the bowling side of things. “The bowling is my main weapon and that’s stayed at the same level, but to add batting to that has been good.”

Glover has also taken on a leadership role this season as a co-captain alongside Rein Geraghty, and says his side is well placed for finals glory in the last weeks before his overseas move. “We’re performing pretty well, in particular after Christmas,” Glover said. “We’ve come back and are putting in some really good performances with three wins on the trot, which has been pleasing after a bit of a rough start to the year. “We’ve just finished top in the T20 competition with the semi-finals coming up this weekend, and in the 40 over competition we’ve just gone top as well, so it’s been a good season.” As well as playing, Glover’s contract includes some coaching of Mochdre’s junior cricketers, which he sees as a chance to pass on some of his experience and love for the game. “I’m always keen to pass on the passion I

www.themonitor.com.au

have for cricket and the knowledge I have to the younger players,” he said. Another key attraction for Glover is the opportunity to travel after his cricket contract finishes. “Ideally I’d like to stay over there for a couple of years and maybe play two seasons with them all going well,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve really been overseas so the travel aspect is very exciting – Oktoberfest in Germany is going to be a destination and I wouldn’t mind going to Wimbledon, the Tour de France and the Champions League Trophy for cricket when it is in England next year. “Just anywhere in Europe would be great with everything being so close.” Glover will leave Roxby Downs in midMarch ahead of starting with his new club in April.

L

ocal Jamine Tovakuta pushed through her young age, height and home sickness to excel at the recent Australian Junior Country Basketball Carnival.

Last year’s Roxby Downs Country Cricket Carnival side went through the tournament undefeated to finish the week in second position.

Team hopes for carnival glory in 2017 H aving gone undefeated in the past two country carnivals but coming in second both times, the Roxby Districts Cricket Association (RDCA) side will be hoping a fixture change will help them go one better in 2017.

Looking to push for its first Country Carnival Cricket Association Tournament title in a number of years, the side heads to Adelaide for matches from February 13-17. RDCA team manager James Beenham said he believes the side has talent to give it a “red hot go” this year. “The team this year is very handy with not many changes from the past couple of years,” Beenham said. “The team will be led by former Olympic Dam captain Seb Holbrook who himself has led the carnival side on a number of occasions. “There are number of other guys who have been around the side for a few years now and they all know what to expect and want to go one step further than the past few years.” The side consists of a majority of RDCA cricketers including local captains Michael Nelson (Miners), Patrick Glover (OD) and Troy Mulders (East Roxby). Past players such as Jason Carroll, who has been a part of a winning country carnival side, will also join the squad with a few Adelaide based players rounding out the roster. The RDCA side is hoping a change in the fixture will help give their title aspirations a boost

with a final day final included into this year’s draw. In previous years the carnival has simply run for five days with the team finishing on top of the ladder with the most wins and highest percentage taking out the title. However, in 2017 the first four days will determine ladder positions, with first playing off against second, third versus fourth, and so on on the final day. “The association is always trying to find new ways of making the week even more exciting,” Beenham said. “This year they are changing things so there is a grand final on the last day of the carnival and we are hoping to be there.” Beenham said while the team was pushing for the win this year, the tournament would also act as a good social event for the players, with the chance to interact with others from across outback South Australia and getting to better know fellow team mates. There will also be the added challenge of playing on turf, which local players rarely have the chance to do. He said the week would not be possible for the RDCA without the help of sponsors BHP Billiton, AEM, REL and Red Mulga. “The community and the RDCA committee are also great with the support they give the side and I thank every player for making themselves available,” Beenham said. ith more than 100 registrations already and still a week to go until the first class, Roxby Academy of Dance (RAD) Director Lana “Miss Lana” Chamberlain is hoping for a strong dancing contingent again in 2017.

A different approach has been taken with registrations this year, with electronic copies being sent to existing members and hard copies available at the RAD office. “In the past we have had a registration day where we’d try and get as many people on lists as we can,” Miss Lana said. “But we found there were still a number of people away because of school holidays, even when we tried to leave it as late as possible.” With numbers expected to remain constant, Miss Lana said there would be little change in class numbers or types. She said all classes, including adult ones, were always popular and well attended.

With RAD having competed at a national level for the first time in 2016, Miss Lana said she is still contemplating making a second attempt this year. Jazz duo Chloe Turley and Lucy Chamberlain will again try and book a place at the Get the Beat nationals when auditions roll around later this year, with other local dancers again taking part in a variety of competitions, exams and the CanDance for a Cure event. Roxby Downs will also, for the first time ever, host a CanDance Australia competition in 2017. The event will be open to anyone who wishes to compete and CanDance for a Cure founder Rachel Adcroft said she was excited to be able to bring the competition to Roxby Downs. “We value the amount of travel time some of you put in and wanted to give back by coming to you,” Ms Adcroft said via a Facebook post. Miss Lana said the prospect of having that kind of competition in Roxby Downs was a major posi-

Jasmine played in one of two South Australian Country under-16 sides during the week-long tournament in Albury, New South Wales, with her team making it to the grand final. “It was heaps of fun and to make the grand final was excellent, but we lost which was disappointing,” she said. “I was the shortest on the court in most games, even some of the under 14s were bigger than I was, but that didn’t bother me.” Jasmine joined players from Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Mount Gambier and Strathalbyn to make up the State country side. She said the standard was very different to that of Roxby Downs with more advanced plays she had to learn and put

With classes beginning next Monday, February 6, she said she was looking forward to the seventh year of the club starting Registration forms are available for collection at the RAD office next to the roxbyink auditorium from 11am-11.30am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. into action. But despite all this, Jasmine enjoyed a lot of court time, playing a role similar to a point guard coming off the bench after the five minute mark of most games. “It was great match experience,” she said. She said even off the court it was enjoyable to be around the other players and coaches supporting other SA teams. Jasmine thanked her mum, dad and family for their efforts in getting her to the tournament and for their support of her basketball. After a break out year resulting in a State country spot, Jasmine is still unsure as to whether she will try out again in 2017. “I want to try and focus on my school work this year, so I’m not sure yet if I will try again,” she said. Jasmine’s country carnival performance adds to a stellar start to 2017, after she was named Roxby Downs’ Young Sports Person of the Year at the Australia Day celebrations last week.

Jasmine Tovakuta competed in the Australian Junior Country Basketball Carnival recently.

Olympic Dam cricketer Patrick Glover will soon head overseas to play a season with Wales club Mochdre.

Cricket dream comes true WRITTEN BY AMANDA HUDSON

O

lympic Dam cricketer Patrick Glover will trade Roxby’s red dirt and heat for the greener, cooler climes of the United Kingdom, after accepting a contract with a Wales-based cricket club.

Glover, 25, will leave Roxby Downs to join Mochdre for the 2017 summer season in a move he describes as a dream come true.
