Hey look, I went downtown to First Friday and a concert on Saturday night and didn’t get shot. Hooray! Hopefully you had as a successful weekend as I did. If you went to see Foxy Shazam on Saturday at Sky City like I asked you to, then I know you had an awesome weekend. It was fun walking out of Sky City and saying the words, “That’s the best rock show that’s ever seen in Augusta. By show, I mean it was a show. Not only are the musicians in the band amazing, they are performers. Dressed like a featured circus act, Foxy Shazam (pictured above) straight up knows how to entertain. There were countless times on Saturday that I would turn around and ask my friends if they saw what I just saw. The lead singer, Eric Nally, is probably a little insane. From tangents to gymnastics, the guy was unstoppable. Here’s a couple of highlights from Saturday night: Eric runs from the back of the stage to jump on the lead guitarist’s shoulders and dry hump the back of his head during a guitar solo. Eric lighting multiple cigarettes at once and then eating them. Eric changing his pants from black to red on stage, and then the keyboardist crowd surfing, with his keyboard, while soloing. See, I told you this was a good show. The band is about to start a long tour with former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash. That tour roles into Atlanta on September 12. It would definitely be worth the drive. The show on Saturday night was perfect for Augusta. We have an opportunity to see these bands before they become huge. Another example is when Cage the Elephant came to town a couple years ago. That show was like no other. We got Cage in Augusta at the perfect time; two radio singles getting spins around the country, with a huge future tour on the way. If we can continue to get shows like Foxy and Cage, I think the music scene in Augusta would be one of the best. The ticket prices are also a nice perk. Five dollars this past weekend compared to $45 for a show with Godsmack and Staind. I would pay $5 nine times to see a band like Foxy Shazam before paying $45 once to see Godsmack. The venue also is important. There’s something to seeing a band with only a couple hundred other people. The intimacy level is huge. This is probably why I love the Tabernacle in Atlanta so much and, what a coincidence, that’s where Slash and Foxy are going to be at. Now those tickets are $45. Sorry. Here’s a cool event coming up on Thursday, Augusta 16, at Lucky 7 Tattoo Shop. It’s a chance for you to meet the band Straight Line Stitch. Great band, killer lead singer. The band will be hanging out at 5 p.m. While your there get a tattoo as well. I recommend a unicorn, flying over a rainbow, with a rebel flag in the background, the crypt keeper is riding the unicorn and he’s wearing roller skates. It’s just an idea. Update: remember last week when I told you that members of the band Atom Blonde have broken up but the band didn’t break up? Well I spoke too soon; the band has officially called it quits. I guess it is a lot harder than they thought. I couldn’t do it. If only I was a blonde, I could have been the new Atom Blonde. What shows are coming to Augusta? Who do you want to see here? MATTSTONE can be heard weekdays from 2-6 p.m. on 95 Rock. 9AUGUST2012
