THE BATTLE FOR SHEFFIELD CASTLE 1644 The Molyneux Company of the Queens Lifeguard Regiment, a locally based Regiment of the Sealed Knot are proudly presenting the “Battle for Sheffield Castle 1644”. This exciting event will be taking place in Hillsborough Park, close to Hillsborough Library on the 19th and 20th May 2012. This will be an exciting prospect of 17th Century Soldiers helping raise money for 21st Century Soldiers. However, we do not glorify war, and at the end of each days battle we “raise the dead” to a round of applause. During this weekend of fun, there will be a “Living History Encampment” where you can meet members of the Sealed Knot who “Live the life of 17th Century Army camp followers and Officers alike”. There will be a number of displays throughout the day, culminating in an English Civil War battle re-enactment

Catching up with Old Comrades Perhaps it’s only to be expected that as ‘old comrades’ from the Second World War pass away (the Tommies from the First are sadly all gone), the clubs they established fade away as well. Many were the outcome of the desire of soldiers, and perhaps of their need, to hold onto the camaraderie of war -time when life was harsh and often short lived. Getting together with other ex-servicemen began after 1918 with many clubs established across the country by those who had survived the horrors. Most were open for others to join. After the WW2 more were set up and often there was affiliation to the CIU. Royal British Legion clubs could also opt to come under the arm of the CIU should members so wish. Many clubs offer support and for injured service personnel through Trevor the Help for Heroes charity which has really grabbed the interest of club people who get up to all sorts to raise money. This is all to be commended and continued. But another way to help them and the wider community would be to keep the tradition of the clubs where there is a particular understanding of the needs and issues of returned service personnel. I’d rather there were no wars and no fighting- but whilst they still rage, those coming home need some form of refuge and clubs can play a big part here.
