Happenings arounD YOUR Community Foundation Your Community Foundation had an exciting year in 2012 including a few firsts, a great celebration and a leap into new deeper and impactful grant work in Kitchener, Waterloo and area. Following the 2011 evaluation of Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs® (WRVS), the report’s focus was narrowed to four key areas; Arts and Culture, Health and Wellness, Getting Started and Belonging and Leadership. Focus groups were held in each of these areas, and the first WRVS Priority Report was launched in October. Read on to find out more about what we discovered. The Centre for Community Knowledge launched in October in tandem with WRVS. The first of its kind in Waterloo Region, this innovative platform hosts profile pages for local charitable organizations showcasing programs and initiatives needing support through video, text and photos. There’s much more to share about this brand new initiative, and we hope you enjoy reading all about it. The KWCF celebrated the 5th anniversary of Random Act of Kindness Day® (RAK Day) in November with the addition of a new lunch-time celebration event. This event, hosted by The Foundation in partnership with the Downtown Kitchener BIA and the City of Kitchener was a hit with everyone who attended. Growth continues with the RAK Day movement across Canada. In 2012 RAK Day was celebrated in over 34 communities from coast to coast, with many showing interest in participating in 2013. Check out some of the amazing photos taken from RAK Day further in the report. Last year over $1.8 million in grants were disbursed to 190 charitable organizations. Once again gifts to The KWCF are up significantly over 2011, reaching approximately $4.3 million. In 2012, there was a shift in the strategic focus for The KWCF. Grants from the Community Fund became more focused and now target more impactful granting opportunities. Granting is now concentrated on the four key areas outlined in WRVS and Priority Report. We held information sessions and organizations worked closely with staff and volunteers to disburse close to $225,000 to those four key areas of need. Two of these grants are highlighted on the coming pages. We can never thank our partners, volunteers, and sponsors enough for their contributions to The KWCF. Without all of their support none of our successes would be possible. Looking to the future, we cannot imagine having better supports to work alongside us in making a lasting difference in our community.

Leadership in Action The KWCF Board of Directors has been hard at work over the past four years shifting their governing style from a hands-on (operating style) to a strategic focus (policy governance style). As a result, the Board has set a new strategic direction for The Foundation, pulling on the results of the 2010 Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs report. Moving forward the Board’s focus will be on finding new and innovative ways of connecting and linking with leadership around the Region for input and feedback. This feedback will be critical when looking forward and working through where your community foundation can make the greatest impact. In 2012 The KWCF was proud to announce the addition of the Community Forward Fund to it’s portfolio of investments alongside other foundations from across the Region and Ontario. The Board of Directors recognized the need to participate in mission related investing and that as an organization The Board of Directors recognized the need to participate in mission-related investing in the non-profit sector. The Community Forward Fund helps The KWCF meet the changing needs of the non-profit section that The Foundation alone could not address. The Foundation knew Harold and his wife Gloria, as KWCF Fundholders of the Harold and Gloria Chapman Family Fund. However Harold’s gift to this community was not only through the support of local charitable organizations, but through his gift of time spent as a Councillor and volunteer. He is a community leader that is missed by many.

David Carter was a man with a passion for his work, his students and for his community. For The KWCF, David was a partner, an advocate and a leader. His work with the University of Waterloo School of Accounting and Finance brought new resources and opportunities to The Foundation’s Community Fund grants committee. For his dedication of time and leadership we will always be thankful. His legacy lives on in the work that The Foundation continues to do thanks to his leadership.

Win was a skilled artist, passionate about her community, and above all a leader who inspired the arts community in Waterloo Region and beyond. Her support of the Clay and Glass Gallery, the Harbinger Gallery and patronage with many more helped to shine a light on the significance of arts in our community. The KWCF knew Win not only for her work in the arts and culture sector, but also for her philanthropy. With the future in mind, Win established the Keith and Winifred Shantz Fund for the Arts in 2012, ensuring her legacy of support lasted well beyond her years.

Betty Jones has been a long-time friend and volunteer of The KWCF, and of this community. Her giving soul made her a friend to so many and a supporter of not only The Foundation and the Women’s Probus Club of Kitchener-Westmount, but to a number of other local charitable organizations. Betty’s memory will live on with those who were lucky enough to call her friend.

Building relationships and understanding our donors is an integral part of the work that The KWCF does. When a donor becomes interested in the work of The Foundation, we work with them to understand their values, their philanthropic style, and what they hope to achieve with their gift. We help connect them to the organizations and projects that are impacting the areas they care about most. If they’re not sure what area they’d like to support, we provide them with tools such as Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs to help inform and educate them on the key issue areas facing our community. And if they need some inspiration, we show them our newest philanthropic tool, the Centre for Community Knowledge, where they can see first hand what impact their support could have. On the following pages you will learn about two very special couples, who approached The KWCF looking to make a lasting difference in their community, each in their own way.

Building

Giving Back Around 1997, Eric Misch read about the work of The KWCF in a local paper. That’s where the story of the Eric and Muriel Misch Family Fund begins. After speaking with his wife Muriel, Eric connected with then Community Foundation Executive Director, Jane Humphries to discuss how working with The Foundation could help them leave a lasting legacy in their community. Fast forward 15 years; Eric passed away in 2006, and Muriel, in looking to the future, wanted to honour her beloved husband’s memory. She had originally looked into starting a musical scholarship, but wasn’t sure how much of an impact such a specific gift would make in the future.

In 2011, Muriel sought out the guidance of local Investment Advisor Eric Strassburger who also sits on the Board of The Foundation. Eric and his co-worker Kim Weber a trust advisor, encouraged Muriel to speak with current KWCF CEO, Rosemary Smith about what options were available.“I wanted to pay tribute to Eric’s contributions to the community and his desire to continue to support those initiatives he felt so strongly about,” comments Muriel. “Eric was always involved in music as a church organist, and loved classical music. He also gave his time to Lutherwood, Habitat for Humanity and House of Friendship.” Rosemary spoke to Muriel about setting up a donor advised fund at The KWCF. “Starting up a fund like this will allow Muriel to reach out to all the areas and organizations that both she and Eric were passionate about,” adds Smith, “We can work with her to ensure that her gift makes the greatest impact where it means the most.” Making the decision to work with The Foundation was the right one for Muriel, and for Eric. She adds, “It feels wonderful to know that I’m giving back in a way that I know that Eric would not only agree with, but also appreciate. We both liked the idea of a community foundation. We’re in this life to help others, and a community foundation touches so many lives. It is a perfect way to leave our mark on the community.”

Supporting the Arts through the Decades Keith and Winifred Shantz have been long-time supporters of both The KWCF and this community. So when it came time to look at establishing a legacy of philanthropy, they looked no further than the community foundation. Win herself was a driving force for the arts in the Waterloo Region for more than 20 years before she met and married Keith. Together they worked as founding supporters to establish the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, something near and dear to her heart, having been a successful potter. With their long and dedicated history of championing the arts, it’s no surprise that Keith and Win wanted their work to continue on long after their passing. Rosemary Smith, CEO of The KWCF, “Win wanted to ensure that arts and culture in our community thrived for years to come. We’re honoured and proud to help make that vision a reality.” Win’s generosity in establishing a number of arts scholarships and awards allowing artists to sustainably produce their work was evidence of her commitment. But it didn’t stop there. Keith and Win’s ultimate goal was not simply to assist the artists, but the art institutions and creative spaces as well. They believed that growing arts and culture in this community happens only when both are given the opportunity to succeed and thrive. Win established the Keith and Winifred Shantz Fund for the Arts, a field of interest fund at The KWCF in 2012. Its purpose: to support organizations such as the Fine Arts Department at the University of Waterloo, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the Canadian Clay and Glass gallery to name a few. In February of last year Win left this world leaving behind her wisdom and enthusiasm for life with those she worked so closely with over the years. Her philanthropic legacy lives on through the Keith and Winifred Shantz Fund for the Arts.

In 2012 The KWCF embarked on its first year of focused grant making. The purpose: to utilize the Foundation’s shift in priorities to have more impact with the grants we distribute out to the community. The call for applications went out in the Fall, and past grantees and other local charities were invited to attend information sessions to learn about the new granting priorities: Arts and Culture, Getting Started (in this community and in life) and Health and Wellness. Each of these streams support the over arching areas of Belonging and Leadership. KWCF Staff worked with our Community Fund Grants Committee to select projects that demonstrated the ability to make lasting impact in one of the priority areas. You’ll read about some of the projects supported by The KWCF’s Community Fund, and the impact that The Foundation’s investment will have in our community, in the coming pages.

Together really is better One of the things that make Waterloo Region unique is the diverse cultural groups that make up our population. Many of these wonderful cultures each have supportive groups that run activities or programs. Programs and groups such as the African Canadian Association, the Coalition for Muslim Women or the South Sudanese group often struggle for resources such as meeting space, governance and administrative consultation and networking opportunities. Since 2011 KW Counselling Servicesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Together is Better Program has been successfully assisting these smaller multicultural groups increasing not only their sustainability, but their impact in the community. Providing these small groups with their basic infrastructure needs allows them to focus on whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really important; those programs and events that engage the different ethno-cultural sectors of our community. By supporting the Together is Better program with grant dollars from our Community Fund, The Foundation is essentially helping the next generation of community leaders become engaged, connected and feel like they belong in this community. The KWCF has been on board with this program from the beginning, and now KW Counselling is taking their support of these groups to the next level. In addition to the essential needs that they are addressing such as meeting space, they are facilitating networking opportunities between the groups and the Bridging Resources Committee. This committee is a collaborative between KW Counselling Services and the KW Multicultural Centre, and works with new and existing leaders from the various multicultural groups to promote a sense of belonging in this community. Working together, these groups are able to maximize their impact and grow leaps and bounds beyond what they would be able to on their own, proving that working together really is better.

Partnership Grows Food Education to New Heights Two unlikely partners have taken a passion for community building, environmental stewardship and sustainable food production and together have grown it into something spectacular. The Hacienda Sarria and The Working Centre have come together to create the Hacienda Sarria Market Garden and to offer fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers to the downtown core. Designed as a “teaching garden” the Hacienda Sarria Market Garden also offers hands on learning opportunities for youth and newcomers to this community through their volunteer program. “There are many advantages to this great project,” shares Rosemary Smith, CEO of The KWCF. “The community now has a garden less than three miles away from the downtown core and the produce is being sold to local restaurants that support buying locally grown food.” St. John’s Kitchen is able to incorporate the fruits and veggies as a part of their lunches so residents that use their services are also finding out about the benefits of fresh local fruits and vegetables.

When looking to expand and keep up with proper maintenance, the Working Centre sought out The KWCF for funding. The program ties in well with the new refined focus of the Community Fund, addressing two key issue areas, of Getting Started and Health and Wellness. “We were very excited to support this initiative” adds Smith. “When you see two organizations coming together to create such an impact in our community, it’s a great example of the power of collaborations.” Market produce is available between June and October, and the public can purchase CSA’s or Community Supported Agricultural shares through the Working Centre for vegetables, and flowers for a weekly or bi-weekly supply each spring.

Connecting Philanthropists to Community Need The KWCF recognizes that knowing key areas of need in our community is only half the battle when trying to make a difference. The other half is knowing where and how local organizations addressing these needs require support. The question often asked following the release of a Vital Signs report is ‘This is great information but, what’s next? How can I make a difference?’ The Centre for Community Knowledge (CCK) was designed to directly address that question. It also tackles another need in the non-profit sector – the ability for charitable organizations to tell their stories.

New organizations are joining the CCK every four months. Check out www.cckwr.ca often for new stories and the latest round of participants! The CCK is funded by:

Through an extensive training program coordinated by The KWCF in partnership with Capacity Waterloo Region, local non-profits are given a page on the online CCK portal to reach out and tell their stories and connect with philanthropists who are looking to make a difference in our community. The training program focuses on three key areas: storytelling, video creation and platform updating. Each of these areas, while critical to the success of the platform, also teaches the organizations transferrable skills that they can use outside of their work with the CCK. Following the training sessions, participating organizations are able to showcase current projects in need using video, photos and text. All projects address issues identified in the Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs report. They create dynamic and engaging web pages with all the information donors, volunteers or the public needs to know in a order to get involved. The Centre for Community Knowledge is for everyone. It provides donors, volunteers, fund holders, media, members of the public and community organizations the knowledge about new initiatives making this Region the best it can be. By being the intermediary between local organizations and the citizens in our community we hope the CCK is a place where everyone will be inspired to take action.

CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF KINDNESS The message for Random Act of Kindness Day® (RAK Day) is simple; do something nice for someone and ask nothing in return except that they do something nice for someone else. Five years ago, a group of dedicated community volunteers gathered together to celebrate the first ever RAK Day here in Kitchener, Waterloo and area. A half a decade later, our community is celebrating the importance of kindness once again. Each year since 2010 teams of 2– 4 volunteers have ventured out into our community bright and early on Random Act of Kindness Day® morning. Each team’s objective: to perform random acts of kindness triggering a chain of kind acts throughout the area. The organizing committee and foundation staff were overwhelmed by the response from the community. A record number of teams participated in Kindness Krews in what The Foundation hoped would be a successful 5th Anniversary celebration. On November 9th, 145 Krews went out into the community and performed 50 or more acts of kindness. With each team performing their 50 acts, that’s close to 7000 acts of kindness that happened around Kitchener, Waterloo and area. What a demonstration of caring and kindness in our Region! The astonishing numbers of volunteers weren’t the only story for the milestone year. To help celebrate RAK Day the community was invited to attend a lunch-time Celebration of Kindness event. In its inaugural year, this event played host to a Taste of Downtown, sponsored by the Downtown Kitchener BIA, where 10 downtown food vendors provided lunch to the public. The lunch-time celebration, which also included a musical performance by Scotty James, children’s activities supported by the KW Art Gallery, Kitchener Public Library, the Smile Epidemic, face painting and more was well attended by the community at large. The lunchtime event is an opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate heartwarming stories, while having some fun and connecting with each other, right in the heart of the city.

The Priority Report Back in 2011, The KWCF and the Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation performed a full evaluation of the Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs® project. The Foundations asked key questions about the report’s use, and what improvements could be made. The responses spoke loud and clear. The community needed more information, more time and a more in depth look at the key priority areas. Hearing the community’s needs, the two community foundations worked to create the first Priority Report. Released in October, this in depth report told a story about the community showing that as we grow in size and become more urbanized, we are slowly becoming less special.

The report highlighted the community progress in the four key areas of belonging and leadership, arts and culture, getting started and health and wellness. The cities’ and Region’s support in arts and culture, our incredibly diverse population, along with our renewed focus on eating and buying fresh local foods are a few of the success stories we shared. These achievements give us an opportunity to celebrate, but as in past, there is more to learn about how we, as a community, can improve. The Priority Report illustrates a community where people have a declining sense of community belonging and feel like they are unable to make a difference. Leadership in the non-profit and public sectors does not match the diversity of our community. Attendance at cultural events is low, often because the community is simply unaware of what’s going on, resulting in low ticket revenue and a strain on arts and culture organizations for funding. The report dives deeper into understanding the nature of these issues, and how they are connected. “The more we examined each of the four key areas, the more we realized that none of the areas in need of attention are truly isolated.” shares Rosemary Smith, CEO of The KWCF. “All of the priority areas exist in an interconnected network. They effect and are affected by each other. This is referred to in the report as triangulation; the idea that you cannot address these issues in an isolated sense, and that from time to time we have to take a step back and look at the big picture.”

ENGAGING OUR FUTURE LEADERS The Engage! KW Philanthropic Leadership program began its third year in the Fall of 2012. Young leaders spanning multiple sectors gather monthly between October and April to expand their knowledge of not only their own goals and values, but of the non-profit sector through hands on group work with local charities. With a renewed focus on storytelling, this past year included a diverse group of leaders that ranged in age, education level, community engagement and philanthropic activities. The 29 Engage! KW participants were split into six groups and were matched with local charitable organizations to address issues they are currently facing. This hands-on working project tackles issues currently facing these organizations. Mentored by alumni from last year’s Engage class, the groups worked with the non-profits to learn about the challenges. They worked together to determine creative solutions and present their findings back to the organization. It has been a great learning experience for all and The Foundation has received positive feedback both from the Engage! KW participants and the organizations themselves about the benefits of this project. Thanks to the local organizations that participated in the Engage! KW group project:

2012 Financial Results We understand the amount of trust placed with us and take that responsibility seriously. The KWCF Board of Directors is committed to representing our community’s interests, setting direction, and monitoring The Foundation’s operations. We are pleased to report that despite the volatile market, the assets of The Foundation continue to surpass the $50M mark over the last three years. The KWCF Investments: In 2012, The KWCF’s return on pooled investment funds was 10.8% versus the benchmark return of 7.6%. (The benchmark combines performance results from the TSX Composite Index, the MSCI World Index, the DEX Universe Bond Index, and the DEX 91 day Treasury Bill Index). We are pleased to report that over the past 10 years our portfolio has averaged 6.7%, and since inception in 1984, The KWCF’s investment return has averaged 9.5%.

The KWCF uses a ‘specialty’ investment management structure that assigns asset class responsibility to different investment managers. An Investment Committee with senior level investment management expertise reviews performance using a benchmark performance measurement system. In 2012, the committee added further diversification to the portfolio by investing in a social financing venture with Community Forward Fund. The Committee reviews the target investment portfolio mix regularly and controls allocations to each asset class using the following asset-mix targets: The KWCF Investment Policy was last revised in February of 2012.

The KWCF’s investment goals are to: • Support the mission and principles of The KWCF, • Manage the assets in the investment portfolio to achieve a total rate of return over the longer term that allows the organization to cover grant obligations and operation expenses, and to • Protect the purchasing power of the capital of the Fund in “real” terms (e.g. compensate for inflation).

Donations: Donations are received from individuals, corporations, other charitable organizations and government. Donors may contribute to endowed funds (funds that are held permanently or for a specified period of time, usually 10 years), funds for distribution (funds that are held for granting usually within two years), or to the operations or programs of The KWCF. We are pleased to report that annual donations over the past five years have increased by over 300%.

Granting: Our granting trend over the past six years has remained relatively stable despite the market downturn in 2007/2008. This was due to the establishment, several years ago of a Community Fund Grant Stabilization Reserve and a Community Fund Strategic Granting Reserve to preserve past yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earnings for future granting requirements. At the end of 2012, the reserves totaled $380,390. Operations: Operating costs are funded primarily by fees levied on assets under management. However, The Foundation also received grants and sponsorship funding for program related activities. In addition, The KWCF has an Accumulated Operating Reserve to help ensure future viability of The Foundation.
