Dear Readers: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…” You may recall this famous quote as the opening paragraph in Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities, which was required reading for those of us who had the good fortune to study British Literature. While Dickens was writing of London and Paris in the era of the French Revolution, I think we can easily take that quote and apply it to what is happening today in Norwalk and Hartford.

2 THE CHAMBER REPORT l June 2015

“It was the spring of hope.” It only takes a few minutes to drive through the urban core of Norwalk to be impressed with the significant level of new development and new investment in our center city. The recent completion of the Iron Works building and the continuing construction of The Pearl in SoNo are bringing new residents and refreshed optimism in an area that has always been a fragile cornerstone of Norwalk’s revitalization of its most famous historic district. There is even more substantial construction happening at Waypointe, which is just beyond the reaches of SoNo and even up the hill where Norwalk Hospital is continuing its most ambitious expansion program in its history. The 444 residential units at Waypointe overlook and surround a brick pedestrian street with central piazza connected to West Avenue. Numerous restaurants and cafes will have outdoor seating along the pedestrian street. The former Loehmann's Plaza is being redeveloped into a modern retail center including a luxury movie theater, modern fitness facility, and 115,000 square feet of retail stores. The proposal by General Growth properties for an upscale retail and mixed use project at the 95/7 site is steadily moving through the approval process. This project, when commenced, will be a major employment and tax revenue generator as well as a community image lifter as the proposed lead tenants are quite notable in the upscale fashion industry. Many of the stakeholders continue to wait anxiously for fulfillment of the promise of new construction in the Wall Street area. It is incumbent upon our appointed and elected officials to move the current plans along as soon as possible or find someone else to undertake the development. “It was the season of Darkness.” All of these bright stars that reflect “the season of Light” can be contrasted with the news from our state capitol in Hartford, where we have been viewing the “winter of despair.” As we go to press with this publication, there appears to be great potential for action that will more than chill the climate for the types of investment listed above. Due to the inability of the state, over the past dozen or so years, to gather the political will to combat the structural problems in our state finances, we may be faced with an unthinkable and dangerous concoction of huge spending increases and an imposition of equally massive new tax burdens. Talk about a rally killer! For the past few years, Connecticut has been ranked amongst the least business friendly states in the nation, not to mention one of the lowest ranked states for job creation. So, the way to fix that is to suggest a huge spending spree and significant new taxation on job creating entities? We know that we can do better than that. We can only hope that, as you read this, it has not come to pass and that the citizens of Norwalk will continue to enjoy the fruits of the new investment that are bringing new development, new jobs, and new revenues to our community. We must tell our legislators to reject the urge to try yet again the failed strategy of taxing and spending their way out of Connecticut’s fiscal problems. Our sustained growth depends upon a fiscal and economic climate that nurtures investment and employment rather than punishes it with higher costs. Let it be the best of times!

Cordially,

Edward J. Musante, Jr. President & CEO

l Alper wants you to make the right choice when looking for an IT services vendor. His technology services company, Absolute Logic, provides businesses with a range of solutions such as managed IT and web services, data backup and disaster recovery, data and network security, voice-over IP telephony, and e-commerce, to name a few. After more than 20 years in the IT services business, Alper wants companies to make an informed decision about who they are hiring to take care of one of their most valuable assets — their data. To that end, he recently published a book, Revealed: The Secrets To Hiring The Right Computer Consultant. “The book has terrific information on what business owners should be thinking about, what questions to ask, and how to protect their company,” says Alper. “It’s valuable information so that they hire the right person.” Although Alper minored in computer science in college, he got into the business on a fluke when a friend asked him to assist a doctor’s office that needed computer help. Over the years, the company has grown, moving along the way from Brooklyn to Manhattan to Wilton.

Absolute Logic specializes in the medical/dental, insurance, and legal fields. However, the company’s clients run the gamut, with a client base in more than 40 industries. “We’ve become experts in the medical/dental, insurance, and legal industries simply because they have very specific software and hardware that they use,” explains Alper. The businesses Absolute Logic services tend to run between 25 and 100 employees, but their largest have a few hundred and some of their smallest have a dozen employees. Absolute Logic’s reach includes all of Connecticut and New York, Northern New Jersey, and Southern Massachusetts, with a large number of their clients in Litchfield and Fairfield counties.

In addition, the company has some national chains as clients, with franchises in more than 25 states. Absolute Logic’s customers often come from referrals, which to Alper speaks of his company’s forte — customer service. “I’m constantly being told that the quality of our service inspires our clients to refer us to others,” says Alper. “The truth is we actually care about our clients’ success because the key driver of our own growth is intimately tied to our clients’ growth.” In fact, Absolute Logic goes above and beyond simply providing IT services, says Alper. “We get involved in how they run their business and how their technology and processes can fuel growth — what technologies they can use in a better or different way that will improve their business, even if that means they spend less on our services right now. I am all for reducing their technology spend if it helps grow their business because at the end of the day, when they grow, we grow. “ If your company is looking to get more out of your IT and want to ensure that your technology improves the everyday running of your company, contact Absolute Logic at (203) 9366680. FRAME & SAVE

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” —Aristotle Roslyn Strizver understands the significance of art for her customers. As the owner of Frame & Save, they rely on her company to enhance and protect their art. Frame & Save, located in Norwalk and Fairfield, provides custom framing, photo and art restoration, custom mirrors, keepsake and memorabilia shadowboxing, as well as art consultation, search, and installation. Strizver, who has an art background, opened the store in Norwalk in 1975 as a do-it-yourself framing shop. The Norwalk location interested her because of its central location to the surrounding towns and its proximity to Stew Leonard’s. “At that time, the store was more arts and crafts, hands-on. We would show people how to do their own framing,” says Strizver. “Women had more time on their hands and it was a very social thing to do.” The business changed over the years, and in the 1990s evolved into a custom-framing store. What has remained the same is the

4 THE CHAMBER REPORT l June 2015

company’s service-oriented policy. “We’re dedicated to our customers because the work is very personal,” says Strizver. “Our customers are coming to us with something that will either be in their home, holds a treasured memory, or is a gift. Because of this, we develop a relationship with people, taking a personal interest in designing something that is timeless and will please them. Our hearts are really in it.” Corporations and businesses also use Frame & Save for company awards, certificates, and plaques or gifts. In addition, for corporate moves, Frame & Save consults on artwork selection for the new space. Frame & Save works with customers to find the best solution

at a price point that fits their budget. “We have a lot of vendors and solutions and we are very budget-oriented so we can always find a good fit.” In the 40 years since its founding, the business has expanded with the opening of the Fairfield store, as well as an art gallery, River Road Gallery, in Wilton. The Gallery offers many types of art and commissions portraits as well. “We represent numerous artists local, national, and international,” says Strizver. Frame & Save has grown over years, but remains a true family business. Strizver’s sons are now part of the business, and many employees have been with the company for years. “Between my sons and the great employees we have who have a lot of experience and years working here, we make a great team.” Visit Frame and Save at 596 Westport Avenue in Norwalk or at 2274 Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield. usinesses looking to improve their sales might want to seek help from Tom French Consulting. French works with businesses to build the critical skills needed to better their sales performance through coaching, training, and consultation. “Our focus is on building the foundational sales skills, be it the way they handle the sales conversation, how sales staff is managed, or how they are held accountable, explains French. Tom French Consulting begins with a sales audit of a company to see if their solutions are needed. “Instead of just providing training, we provide a free service to identify what is needed to improve sales effectiveness, says French. The sales audit also helps French Consulting tailor its assistance to the specific problems and needs of the company. “Often companies spend money on quick fix solutions that really don’t

make a difference, says French. “We help them figure out what they need to do and then develop a plan to get there — how to implement it effectively so a lasting improvement on the business is realized. French started the business in 2011 after a long career selling HR services to Fortune 500 companies. “I was already in the business of sales training, leadership development, says French. I decided to run my own company, focusing on what I know best — helping sales people get better and improve their results.
