Sculpture in the Park began in the summer of 1984 with 50 artists showing, and hoping to sell, their sculptures in Benson Park. Two-thousand visitors attended the inaugural event, purchasing over $50,000 worth of art. The proceeds from this first show were the seeds for Loveland’s sculpture garden when the Loveland High Plains Arts Council purchased two sculptures for permanent placement in the park. Each year, Sculpture in the Park draws tens of thousands of visitors annually and the Benson Sculpture Garden is internationally recognized as a mustsee contemporary art site. This August, approximately 2,000 pieces from 160 international juried artists will be on display and for purchase in Benson Park during the event’s 32nd year.

ATTENDING SCULPTURE IN THE PARK

The Art & Artists The Loveland High Plains Arts Council is always thinking forward, working to grow the arts and to keep the event fresh and inspiring for artists and visitors alike. They recently signed an agreement with the City of Loveland to expand the existing sculpture garden across the street, making more room for sculptures. Three new pieces have already been placed. In order to keep the show interesting for return visitors, Loveland High Plains Arts Council Director, Polly Juneau, explains, “We always have a number of first-time participants—not necessarily new artists, but new to the show. [We’ll have] 29 first-time participants in the show this year, so they’ll be bringing new work that people haven’t seen. We also have a requirement that returning artists bring 75% new or recently produced pieces.”

Fostering Community Unlike a typical museum or gallery, Sculpture in the Park is an active community-oriented show. “We have been in business 32 years, and one of the things that’s particularly unique about the show is visitors get to meet all of the artists in person, to talk to them about their pieces—what is the piece, what is the significance of the piece?” says Juneau.

But it’s not just about interacting with fans or potential buyers. The event itself fosters community by giving back to Loveland. Proceeds from Sculpture in the Park go back into building the sculpture garden for capital improvements and the purchasing of additional pieces. Loveland High Plains Arts Council has used funds from this event to landscape around the permanent sculptures as well as build sidewalks, bridges, picnic areas, and a pavilion in Benson Park. “So far,” Juneau says, “we’ve donated 148 pieces worth over four million dollars.”

Making it a Reality Hosting a world-renowned outdoor art show with thousands of visitors each year is no easy feat. But with the help of a devoted team of volunteers, many of whom return year after year, they’re able to make it happen. “We view this as a team effort,” Juneau explains. “We are all volunteers. We have 400 volunteers that put on the show. It’s as if we were a three-legged stool. Each leg is really important to keeping the stool standing up — artists, patrons, volunteers — and we have to have all three groups working together to make this happen. We need every single one of us doing what we each do best to make this happen.”
