PART OF A BROADER COMMUNITY

Service Learning Opens Students’ Eyes to Needs of World Around Them BY KAREN FINUCAN CLARKSON As independent schools in Prince George’s County seek to prepare students for success, some use service learning to broaden awareness and alter perspectives. Service learning allows students to “experience and explore situations that are not ordinarily a part of their lives,” according to The Center for Service Learning at The Community College of Baltimore County’s website, “and in so doing provide opportunities for expanding the limits of their knowledge that are very important if they are to be an integral part of an increasingly diverse society.” “As a Christian school, community service is essential to our spiritual formation,” said Erin Morris, Christian service coordinator at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville. The all-boys school features a comprehensive service-learning program that is tied to graduation. “The Trinitarian Order was founded on the idea of ransoming people from poverty. Our program was created to develop well-rounded boys who, through ransoming others, give hope and grow as well.”

COURTESY DEMATHA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

DeMatha Catholic High School organized a mini-walk last year to help the homeless and sponsor Mary House, an organization that provides housing and support programs to homeless and struggling families.

While DeMatha students may choose the service project that they feel they are best equipped to contribute to, at least 20 hours of service must be “contact work. We want them to be working directly with people in need or marginalized in some way,” said Morris. The service-learning commitment spans all four years. “We believe as people grow and develop, they have different

gifts to offer. They also appreciate the experience differently as a 14-year-old than as an 18-year-old.” DeMatha offers three service trips annually. “They give the boys lots of opportunity to have contact with others, some of whom may be different from you, but who, you come to realize, are in many ways still like you,” she said. The fall Urban Plunge is a four-day experience wherein students volunteer locally—at soup kitchens and shelters—and return to campus in the evening “for prayer and to reflect together about the impact our services had.” Earlier this month, 24 boys traveled to Victoria, Texas. “The key aspect of the trip is to be displaced,” said Morris. “This is a primarily Mexican community and the culture is somewhat different. We partner with local churches and reside with host families. The boys may assist with church projects or in nursing homes.” A summer trip takes students to another impoverished area—last year, Camden, N.J.—to perform community service. “We slept in less than comfortable conditions to emphasize what others are going through.”

trips and has begun bringing in speakers to expose students to different needs throughout the community. After a talk by someone with The Bowie Interfaith Pantry and Emergency Aid Fund, “students were asked to give up their lunch and experience what some of the people we serve go through regularly,” said Tarnosky. Students also made donations to the food pantry.

Camden—where more than 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, according to Catherine Donley—also receives assistance from students at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville. Each semester, a dozen students spend four days working with those in need. Learning is emphasized along with service. “On one of the days, students break up into groups of four and are allotted the same amount [of money] that a typical family of four on welfare can spend on food a day, approximately $12,” said Donley, campus minister for outreach. “The students’ eyes are opened when they see how difficult it is to eat healthily for three meals with such little money.”

Some projects have an international component.

Walking in another’s shoes also is part of the

service-learning experience at Bladensburg’s Elizabeth Seton High School. “We slept on the floor and there were no showers,” said Laura Tarnosky, service learning coordinator at the all-girls school, about a 24-hour retreat that started with volunteer duties at the DC Central Kitchen. The 10 girls then spent the night in the hypothermia shelter at the Father McKenna Center in Washington the weekend before it opened. “There were loud sirens throughout the night and we talked about someone’s ability to function the next day without much sleep. We also talked about what it would be like wondering who was sleeping next to you and whether the few belongings you had would be safe.” After another round of volunteering the next morning, the

girls returned to campus “for a simple lunch, discussion and reflection.” While service learning is mandatory at Seton, Tarnosky helps “guide students toward an experience that’s meaningful, not something that will let them just check off the box.” The school offers summer service

In early January, students from St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel traveled to Belize for a week “to be in solidarity with the poor,” said Nancy Vawter, director of campus ministry. “We believe we have a responsibility to serve and care for the impoverished throughout the world.” The experience is eye-opening for students as the residents of this small village in Punta Gorda “live in thatch-roof huts with no running water or electricity.” Students volunteer at a local school, organizing the library and painting the building. The trip is transformational, according to Vawter. “One of the girls told me she thought she was coming to serve the poor but discovered that, ‘These people are rich in ways I’ve never seen before. There’s only a dirt road, they have no shoes and they cook breakfast on an open fire, but they are so full of love, so full of joy, so full of peace.’” SEE COMMUNITY, PAGE 6

BEYOND THE COUNTY

School Travel and Exchange Programs Enhance Student Growth

COURTESY HOLY TRINITY EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL

Students from Holy Trinity Episcopal Day School learn outdoor education at Echo Hill Outdoor School on the Eastern Shore in 2010.

BY KAREN FINUCAN CLARKSON

“Travel,” wrote Mark Twain, “is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness …” Intent upon creating broad-minded global citizens, many independent schools in Prince George’s County have intensified their multicultural emphasis by adding or beefing up travel opportunities for students. “We want students to perceive themselves as citizens of the world as opposed to just this community,” said Patricia Norris Garber, director of admissions and enrollment management at Bishop McNamara High School. “Travel increases kids’ global awareness,” increasingly important in a world that is becoming more interconnected. The Forestville school offers a variety of programs designed to expose students to other cultures, build upon classroom learning and provide servicelearning opportunities. Whether domestic day trips or international overnights, school travel programs can be life changing— student perspectives are altered, lessons are absorbed

4

and confidence is enhanced. Travel is, in many ways, the epitome of experiential learning.

“Through our outdoor education program, students learn 21st-century skills, such as collaboration and cooperation,” said Michael S. Mullin, head of school at Holy Trinity Episcopal Day School, with campuses in Bowie and Glenn Dale. “The program is multifaceted, requiring students to think critically, work cooperatively and utilize athletic skills to solve problems.” Holy Trinity’s outdoor education program begins in second grade with a day trip to the Patuxent River 4-H Center in Upper Marlboro and culminates in seventh grade with a two-night stay at Echo Hill Outdoor School on the Eastern Shore. “This isn’t a stand-alone program. It’s part of our mission and tied into our curriculum,” said Mullin. That mission includes educating the whole child in a comprehensive, well-rounded program. The fourth-grade curriculum at Holy Trinity includes Maryland history and ecology, with a unit on streams

and rocks, according to Cindy Canzanella, head of lower school. The overnight program at Wabanna Camp and Conference Center in Edgewater exposes students to “the past, present and future of the Chesapeake Bay and how it has influenced the cultural and economic development of the state. Our students learn about environmental degradation and discover what they can do to protect the natural resources we have,” she said. The trip also includes a team-building component. “There’s a huge swing—and I’m talking really high— and students have to figure how to get a classmate up to the top,” said Canzanella. “Not only does it require you to put a lot of trust in your teammates, but you have to have the confidence to let go and swing.” Such activities help to break down barriers—between students and between students and faculty. “It allows students to see others in a different light,” said Mullin, “and goes a long way to reducing the potential for bullying and eliminating cliques.” Self-confidence is enhanced, to one degree or another, said Gene Esposito, head of middle school at Holy

Trinity. “I often hear from students that they were able to do something they never thought they could do … For some just spending the night away from their parents is an accomplishment. For others, it’s completing a high ropes course or learning a new skill, such as canoeing. But what ties everything together is team building. No matter what the activity, if they don’t work together and help each other out, they won’t succeed.”

Not only do travel programs offer unique

experiences, but the learning is round-the-clock. School travel also provides one-of-a-kind memories that stay with students throughout their lives. In March, some 20 students at Bishop McNamara High School will travel to Pamplona, Spain as part of an exchange program that seeks to “bridge the gap between two very different cultures and make the world just a little smaller,” noted Kristen Nunez, the school’s director of communications. The students will live and attend school with their Spanish peers and visit sites in the Basque region. Last spring, Bishop McNamara families hosted 30 students from Pamplona, home to the annual Running of the Bulls. They experienced “American culture, including education, history, food, and the language, sports and hobbies,” said Nunez. Not all of the students making the March trip speak Spanish. “Most are still learning but eager to practice what they do know and pick up new skills as they interact daily with native speakers,” said foreign-language teacher Georgina C. Gomez-Bozzo. “What is really interesting is that the school in Pamplona is an ikastola,

a Basque-speaking school. Their students speak both Spanish and Basque fluently.” Gomez-Bozzo is optimistic that her students “will gain a sense of how much world there is out there, beyond the confines of their daily lives. I hope that

this experience will whet their appetite for more travel abroad and perhaps inspire them to spend time in a foreign country and to increase their desire to become multilingual.” While Bishop McNamara students have previously experienced the cultural riches of Costa Rica, a new summer program will allow students to immerse themselves in climate science. After three weeks studying Maryland’s temperate climate zone on the Forestville campus, students will travel to Costa Rica to explore a more tropical climate. “The rain forest will provide incredible hands-on learning opportunities for our students,” said Garber. “Students will examine our impact on the environment and explore what our responsibility is to ensure that these resources are maintained.” Developing leadership skills is the focus of a summer institute—held at either the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., or St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas—attended by select students from Bishop McNamara and other Holy Cross-affiliated schools throughout the country. “We work with them as youth leaders so that they see themselves not just as citizens of Maryland, but of the U.S. and the world,” said Garber. “They develop a deeper understanding of their responsibility to their fellow man.” Whether traveling within state or several time zones away, student learning is enhanced. The experience is enriching, empowering and enlivening, said Garber, and builds upon traditional classroom learning. “It opens students’ eyes to the world around them and broadens their perspective.”

COMMUNITY, CONTINUED FROM 3

The experience made another student realize that relationships are what matter most. “That’s pretty profound for a teenager,” said Vawter. “She returned home intent on working on relationships with her family.” The retreat also bonds students. “I have students who come from broken places, who are isolated and facing challenges in life. The group experience transforms them. There is a solidarity that develops. Ultimately, the way these kids learn to love one another and care for one another transforms our school. It’s such a rich experience on so many different levels,” she said. “We’ve done hurricane relief after Katrina, tornado relief in Alabama and Pennsylvania, trips to remote Eskimo villages in Alaska, as well as mission trips to Central and South America, Africa, China, Europe, and Ukraine,” said George Hornickel, head of school at Grace Brethren Christian School in Clinton. “At the end of the book of Matthew, Jesus commands us to take the Gospel around the world. We take that command to heart, offering five trips a year for about 50 students, staff and alumni.” Since the program began in 2001, Grace Brethren has sponsored service-learning trips to roughly a dozen states and 20 foreign countries. “To support those trips, we’ve probably raised about $1 million,” said

“[STUDENTS] ARE YOUNG, ENTHUSIASTIC IDEALISTS WHO WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. IT IS A JOY TO WATCH THEM BLOSSOM.” Laura Tarnosky, service learning coordinator, Elizabeth Seton High School

Hornickel. The trips are voluntary and often take place during Easter break or over the summer. “There is no complaining on trips. Students understand they are there to serve.” It’s not unusual for students to find themselves in communities where people live in “cardboard or tin shacks or cinder-block houses with just one wire coming into the house.” Students’ takeaways are significant. “There’s usually a thankfulness that they live in the United States. Even though many of these kids are from middle-class homes, once they see the level of poverty that exists, middle class seems pretty rich,” said Hornickel. “They also develop empathy for those they serve.” Service-learning trips to Gambia are part of a larger effort by students at New Hope Academy in Landover Hills, a “character education school,” according to Principal Joy Morrow. Since 2007, groups of students

spend three weeks in the small, East African nation providing humanitarian aid. “We also raise money to sponsor scholarships for Gambian students, since public education there ends at sixth grade,” said Morrow, “and have helped to also start several schools and preschools. We are now working toward beginning an orphanage in Gambia.”

Some service-learning projects expose students to social and political issues. In September, five students from Seton High School took part in the 2012 Stop Modern Slavery Walk on the National Mall. After hearing from victims of sexual trafficking and slavery, the students met with one of the sisters at the school “for a discussion that helped them process the information,” said Tarnosky. Almost 80 students from Bishop McNamara took part in the March for Life in Washington on Jan. 25. They were joined by students from St. Edward and Archbishop Hoban high schools in Ohio. “This is a great way to show solidarity with those affected by abortion and to embrace our Holy Cross brother schools,” said Donley. Whether service learning occurs close to home or around the world, students are discovering that they can influence the lives of others, said Tarnosky. “They are young, enthusiastic idealists who want to make a difference in the world. It is a joy to watch them blossom.”
