Public Safety Fair to be held Oct. 8 PHOENIX – The community is invited to the 5th annual Public Safety Fair, to be held at Desert View Bible Church, on Saturday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This community event is sponsored by the Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office, Daisy Mountain Fire Department and HonorHealth. The event will include police and fire demonstrations, including a simulated car crash with fire and extrication, K9 demonstration, SWAT, explosives demonstration, and much more. Get a close look at fire engines, a ladder truck, and sheriff ’s cars and helicopters. HonorHealth representatives will be on hand to talk about healthy living, and the Phoenix Herpetological Society will have live demonstrations.

The Foothills Focus earns awards from statewide newspaper association NEW RIVER – The staff of The Foothills Focus is honored to announce that the paper has won four awards through the Arizona Newspaper Association’s Better Newspapers Contest. Among the awards the paper received is an award in Community Service/Journalistic Achievement. This award honors newspapers that are positively affecting their communities through their commitment to journalistic quality. The Foothills Focus is extremely grateful to the community organizations that offered commendations for the paper and helped the newspaper achieve this recognition.

DVUSD board candidate forum set for Oct. 10 ANTHEM – Three seats on the Deer Valley Unified School District governing board are being sought in this year’s election, and the board candidates will be coming to a candidate forum in Anthem on Monday, Oct. 10 to answer local residents’ questions and share ideas and goals for the DVUSD. The forum will be held at the Anthem Civic Building and will start at 6 p.m. Six candidates are currently running for the board, including incumbents Ann Ordway and Michael (Greg) Gregoire. Jenny Frank, Darcy Tweedy, Jennie Paperman, and Bob Stambach

are also running. Ron Bayer, who is currently on the DVUSD board, initially filed to be on the ballot but has since withdrawn his candidacy, according to the Maricopa County Education Service Agency. Elected DVUSD governing board members will serve 4-year terms. According to local resident Curtis Baker, who is one of the organizers of the forum, all of the candidates have indicated that they will be present. Baker noted that multiple organizations are working

Local author discusses inspiration for ‘Images of America: New River’ ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

Elizabeth Medora, Managing Editor, received a second place mention for a water rescue photo, taken during the 2014 New River flood. NEW RIVER – New River has a rich history, with plenty of legend and lore mixed in. Local author and historian Marcy Miller has delved into that history with her new book ‘Images of America: New River’. An Arizona native, Miller has lived in New River for five years. A longtime author who has self-published two other books, Miller jumped at the chance to profile New River, which she calls “so beautiful.” “I always loved Arizona history, and my dad was very

much into Arizona history,” Miller said, describing her historical writing background. “When he passed away, I inherited a huge library of Arizona history books, which I use constantly.” Miller was invited to write the

Images of America book after the company’s editors saw her history blog. She said the editors “reached out to me out of the blue” and she immediately agreed to take on the project. Miller said her research on New River took several months, and she focused on primary sources. From first contact to publishing, the book was in process for almost two years. Miller interviewed many longtime New River residents, detailing their stories and scanning old photographs for
