Merrill Gardens at Anthem set to open in autumn 2016 ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF
ANTHEM – The Merrill Gardens at Anthem construction is moving quickly, and the retirement community is scheduled to be open for residents this autumn. Resident applications are already being accepted. The community will be located at 2800 W Rose Canyon Circle, east of the Daisy Mountain Drive/ Meridian Road intersection. An informational meeting for potential residents will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the St. Rose Parish, which adjoins the Merrill Gardens grounds. Bill Pettit, R.D. Three suspects arrested in connection with Anthem burglaries ANTHEM – On Jan. 27, Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office officers arrested three suspects in connection with burglaries in Anthem. Derrick Fargo, Terrick Fargo, and Marlon Nieves-Catala, all 18 years old, were arrested and are facing several charges. MCSO Det. Doug Matteson reported that, on Jan. 27, deputies responded to a call saying that 18-to-20-year-old males were looking into houses. As the investigation continued, MCSO officers linked the suspects who were later arrested to the burglaries. Terrick Fargo was the first
suspect to be arrested. His twin brother Derrick was later taken into custody at the Fry’s grocery store on Daisy Mountain Drive. Officers were able to get a description of a vehicle connected with the suspects. “Deputies made a traffic stop on that vehicle, which was stolen out of Phoenix,” Matteson said. Nieves-Catala was reportedly driving the vehicle and was arrested. During the investigation and search on Jan. 27, emergency precautions were taken at

DESERT HILLS – Two structures were destroyed in a fire in Desert Hills on Monday. Captain Dave Wilson of the Daisy Mountain Fire Department reported that the fire was “fully involved” by the time the first DMFD truck, which came from threequarters of a mile away, arrived on the scene.

“The fire was isolated to a travel trailer and a 20’ storage container,” Wilson said. “Efforts were concentrated on keeping the fire from spreading to other buildings and neighboring properties.” DMFD was able to contain and extinguish the fire.

Pettit described the rate of construction as “excellent” and specified that the community is set to receive a certificate of occupancy this August if
construction continues at the current rate. “It’s ahead of schedule,” Pettit said. “We’re really pleased so far.” Merrill Gardens at Anthem will include studio, onebedroom, and two-bedroom apartments. Square footage ranges from approximately 450 sq. ft. to 1,000 sq. ft. Independent living, assisted living, and memory care units will be offered. Community pricing information can be obtained by calling the Merrill Gardens at Anthem staff at (623) 201-4623. A leasing office is expected to open in early March. The community will feature Merrill Gardens’ Anytime Dining: the dining room is
open all day, so residents can eat when they choose. The community will include an outdoor swimming pool, library, meeting rooms, and gardens. Pets are welcome, and a concierge service for pet needs will be offered. Merrill Gardens at Anthem will be assembling a full staff in the next few months, and employee applications will be accepted soon. Program offers options for Phoenix residents with traffic fines PHOENIX – Residents with past due traffic fines owed to the Phoenix Municipal Court may be able to pay the owed funds through the Compliance Assistance Program. The program provides an affordable way for people to repay past fines with the goal of restoring their driving privileges. Those with past-due traffic fines must visit the Phoenix
Municipal Court in person to see if they are eligible for the program. Court staff will review some basic information from residents and provide a “Pay Today” amount that can be paid on the spot to begin the repayment process. After submitting the “Pay Today” amount, residents would enter into a plan to repay the remaining balance. Once residents pay the “Pay Today” amount and sign up for a payment plan, court staff will notify the state Motor Vehicle Division that the resident is compliant with all Phoenix Municipal Court fines. Residents who think they may be unable to pay a “Pay Today” amount still are encouraged to visit the court and learn about the program requirements. Residents should note that fines from other jurisdictions or other Motor Vehicle Division rules could impact their ability to have their drivers’ licenses restored. Bike run fundraiser to support wildlife rehab center PHOENIX – The ‘Bikers Soar for Wildlife Poker Run’ is set for this Valentine’s Day. Riders are invited to participate in this unique Valentine’s event that helps with the care and rehabilitation of animals at the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Wildlife Center, and is hosted by the Wildlife Center’s Auxiliary. Riders will enjoy approximately 100 miles of scenic Arizona, beginning at Arrowhead Harley Davidson at 16130 N. Arrowhead Fountains Center Dr. in Peoria and ending at the iconic Buffalo Chip Saloon at 6811 E. Cave Creek Rd. in Cave Creek. Throughout the route, riders will stop at designated locations to collect a playing card, with the high and low hands of five cards winning a prize at the end of the ride. Even the non-riders in the family can partake by joining riders after 12 p.m. to enjoy the activities at the final destination. The tax-deductible cost to participate is $25 per rider or $35
per rider and passenger, with lunch provided to all registered riders. After Feb. 5, registration will increase to $30 per rider or $40 per rider and passenger. The first 200 registrants will receive a free event T-shirt and ride pin. I have done something illegal. If you are with local law enforcement or the FBI, please stop reading immediately. I have placed a small bet on the Super Bowl. Guess I am not alone, since each year an estimated 200 million people wager on the Big Game to the tune of about 4.2 Billion bucks! Oh yea, not only do we like to eat our way through the Super Bowl, we like to throw in a little change on the action. The history of gambling goes back to about 2300 B.C. and is considered one of the earliest forms of entertainment that has ever taken place in human existence. Cards, dice, and heads and tails games determined many country’s boundaries and territories. It decided the fate of which royal married or what weapons were to be used in a duel. Heck, in 2009 a Cave Creek election came down to the luck of the draw when two candidates who had tied for a seat on the town council chose the card trick as the deciding

factor. The winner was Adam Trenk, when he chose the king of hearts and found a place in Arizona’s history books. But wait, we also love the oddball wagers like what color will Katy Perry’s hair be at halftime or what color liquid will be dumped on the winning coach? How many horses will be in Budweiser ads? Not only do we like to bet on teams, we like to bet on just about anything! Oh, and it seems that about 97 percent of all betting that we do is considered illegal! Hmmm… do you know any criminals?

Here is the other sad truth about the Super Bowl. Most people watching the game hate both teams! Ouch. So why not make the entire spectacle even more miserable by betting (and losing) some money? Millions of Americans will have a party anyway, place prop bets on things like which team makes the longest field goal, which player loses his helmet, or which team is first penalized. SCOTTSDALE – Honor Health Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center has announced the addition of a Navio orthopedic surgical system to help surgeons perform precise and accurate partial knee replacement surgeries. This technology for partial knee replacements uses a CTfree intra-operative registration, planning, and navigation platform to assist the surgeon in building patient-specific surgical plans. The Navio roboticcontrolled hand piece assists the surgeon in preparing the bone with the precision of robotics in a hand-held, freehand sculpting technique. This technique is reported to lessen patients’ pain and swelling post-operatively than traditional total joint replacement methods. “Robotic-controlled smart instrumentation allows us to very precisely place an implant that has been selected for the patient’s knee,” said orthopedic surgeon Bertrand Kaper, MD. “The benefits to the patient is a much faster rehabilitation including shorter hospitalization, quicker recovery time than a total knee replacement, and a more natural feeling knee since less bone is removed and there is less trauma to soft tissue.” With no pre-operative CTscan required, Navio patients receive the benefits of robotic assistance without additional time spent for pre-operative procedures. Instead, the surgeon collects anatomical data during the procedure to build a 3D model of the patient’s knee. This

information helps the surgeon place the implant and balance the knee’s ligaments for optimal alignment and a wellbalanced knee. “Partial knee replacements are a minimally invasive surgery that allows patients to have less pain and swelling postoperatively than traditional total joint replacement methods,” said Kaper. SCOTTSDALE – This Saturday, the Arizona Fine Art Expo will welcome special guests from the Scottsdale Arabian Horse show. The north Scottsdale event will open early at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, for ‘Up Close with Royal Arabian Horses,’ a special event featuring two magnificent Royal Arabian horses. The two-hour event also will feature a lively Quick Draw, where artists have a brief timed period to draw the horses, and several artists will plein-air paint them. BCHS girls basketball team holding winning streak as they prepare for senior night game JESSICA WATTS STAFF
ANTHEM – The Boulder Creek High School girls basketball team is coming off of a three-game winning streak after picking up a pair of wins last week against Flagstaff and Westview High School. The Lady Jags beat the Eagles 54 to 51 on Thursday, and beat the Knights 39 to 31 on Friday. Thursday night, the Lady Jags game out strong against the Eagles going up 14 to 9 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles came within four at halftime due to some miscommunication and turnovers from the Lady Jags. “We went out and were a little overly aggressive in the first, which caused us to get a little fatigued because we used a short bench tonight,” said Ryan Pletnick, Boulder Creek’s Head Coach. According to junior Mallory Vivola, the team wasn’t communicating enough, but they picked it up and got things together. The Eagles tied it up early in the third quarter, but the Lady Jags took
off after a three-pointer by sophomore Sydney Palma. That was all the Lady Jags needed, as they would lead the rest of the game. Pletnick says it was the girls’ tenacity that helped them bounce back so quickly. “We have had one of the toughest schedules I think I have ever seen,” Pletnick said. “At the beginning of the year, it was one of those where we had a bunch of close games and right now I think it’s the time that they are keeping their heads when dealing with adversity.” Vivola says that the team’s adrenaline and drive to win is what pushed them to extend their winning streak to three games. “Every game we have left on the schedule is going to be tight,” Pletnick said. “At the beginning of the year, we were on the opposite end of this, and now I think this the right time to learn from it and move on from the mistakes we made.” The Lady Jags’ last home game and senior night will be on Thursday, Feb. 4, against Millennium High School.

Sonoran Trails counselor honored by Arizona School Counselors Association PHOENIX – Sonoran Trails Middle School counselor Cadi Angeli has been named the Arizona School Counselors Association ‘Counselor of the Year.’ She will be recognized at the AzSCA spring conference, to be held March 7-8. Cave Creek Unified School District Student Support Administrator Gina Durbin described Angeli as “an amazing counselor.” “Her program focuses on academic, personal/social, and career development of all students through small groups, individual meetings, guidance curriculum, and parent involvement,” Durbin said. “Overall, Cadi makes it her priority to do her best to be responsive to all of her schools’ needs. Musicfest to present Young Composer winner’s composition at Feb. 23 concert SCOTTSDALE – Arizona Musicfest announced on Jan. 25 that Arizona native Michael Markowski is the winner of the Young Composer’s Fanfare Competition. Markowski’s composition ‘Joyride’ will be performed by the Musicfest orchestra at their Feb. 23 concert at the Pinnacle Presbyterian Church, 25150 N Pima Rd., in Scottsdale. Markowski’s ‘Joyride’ was selected from four highly competitive submissions and will be performed during the opening concert of Orchestra Week for Arizona Musicfest’s 25th Anniversary. Markowski attended Dobson High School approximately 10 years ago, where he first started composing ‘Joyride.’ His high school band had been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and Markowski’s band director “proposed the idea of writing a short celebratory work to commemorate the occasion of their appearance in the famed hall,” Markowski said. “As I remember it, he said, ‘It would be cool to blend something joyful, something traditional – say, Beethoven’s Ode To Joy – with something more contemporary – like John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine.’ His idea excited me so much that within ten days, I had completed the first draft of this classical mash-up – a two-and-a-half minute concert opener that dressed Beethoven’s famous melody in a tie-dye blazer of rhythm and texture that nods humbly to Adams,” said the winning composer. For the Musicfest competition, Markowski reimagined the piece for a full symphony orchestra and submitted the transcription to the Arizona Musicfest’s competition. “I took the original piece and painted it with a different palette to utilize the instruments of the classical orchestra, such as adding strings parts that my original didn’t have. It’s going to be a thrill to hear it performed by the Arizona Musicfest

Festival Orchestra. They have such a reputation as being one of the best in the country,” Markowski said. “Michael’s piece is stunning, with a jubilant, youthful spirit, beautifully blended with his talent for creating imagery with sound. It will be an honor to perform this on Feb. 23, with our Festival Orchestra,” said Robert Moody, Artistic Director. The Arizona Musicfest Festival Orchestra features musicians from the nation’s finest orchestras, including players from the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and more. Cave Creek Museum to host Valentine’s program CAVE CREEK – Arizona turns 104 on Valentine’s Day, and Cave Creek Museum will celebrate a week prior with a fun family program sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Carefree. Celebrate the birthday of Arizona and Valentine’s Day with the museum on Sunday, Feb. 7, 1:30-3 p.m. Event participants will have the opportunity to make their own special valentines, and taste some treats from the early 1900s that are still popular today. Come learn about Arizona’s history, make valentines, and mark your calendar for some of the museum’s other programs and events. Located at 6140 Skyline Dr., Cave Creek Museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers. Shops at Norterra to host Valentine’s Vintage Car Show PHOENIX – Kick off Valentine’s Day weekend with The Shops at Norterra’s annual Valentine’s Vintage Car Show on Friday, Feb. 12. The event will be held 6-8 p.m. on the shopping center’s Main Street and nearby corridor area. Admission is free, and there is no pre-registration for the car show. Main Street will be packed full of vintage cars, roadsters, hot rods, and even a few modern vehicles. Live rockabilly, swing, and bop music will be provided by Kenny Love and the Rockerfellas. Radio personality Charlie Huero from KOOLFM will also be on hand to host a retro costume contest with prizes and giveaways. A nostalgic father-daughter/ mother-son “sock hop,”
featuring 50s era tunes, dance lessons, and interactive games, with a retro-themed photo booth will take place in the corridor between Norterra’s Pita Jungle restaurant and Harkins Norterra 14 Theatre. Other activities include free food samples from Norterra’s many

Air quality director urges residents to observe No Burn Days As the state’s air quality director, it’s my mission to help protect the health of our citizens, especially the most vulnerable, from the effects of bad air quality. We just concluded the annual winter No Burn Day public health campaign in Maricopa County, and the results were not good. As you likely know from your own experience, air quality over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays was exceptionally bad, with soot concentrations exceeding federal health
standards as a result of wood burning activities and personal fireworks use. While a single person’s wood burning or fireworks display may not seem like a lot, collectively over the entire Valley it adds up to a major health concern for us all, and especially those with heart and lung problems. I thank the many Maricopa County residents who voluntarily heed the wood burning restrictions on designated No Burn Days and encourage those who do burn to burn better by
using natural gas, propane or other commercially available wood burning alternatives. Please be judicious in your use of personal fireworks, too. Just because you can set them off doesn’t mean you should when you can see and smell for yourself how the smoke and soot collect around you. Storytelling Portraits SHEA STANFIELD ARTS COLUMNIST
In Michael Blake’s novel ‘Dances with Wolves’, the character Lt. John Dunbar wrote in his journal regarding the Native American people, “They were a people so eager to laugh, so devoted to family, so dedicated to each other. The only word that comes to my mind is harmony.” Since childhood, local artist Ken Ferguson has been fascinated by 18th and 19th century military history, as well as the ways of this continent’s “First People.” Both are “front and center” in Ken’s long legacy of work.
Ken began his imaginative, fact-based storytelling as a child. Growing up in the Chicago area, he spent long hours meticulously sculpting and painting toy soldiers, as well as drawing subjects from the natural world of interest to him. Fueling the fires of young Ken’s imagination were trips to Chicago’s Field Museum, where he recalls, “I found it to be a mysterious and wonderful place. The Field Museum was my first exposure to historic artifacts from around the world, including those of the North American Continent’s Native people.” His mother, an accomplished watercolorist in her own right, guided Ken through the basics of composition, drawing, and watercolor to bring his observations and fascinations with the past to vivid and colorful life. The idea of pursuing art as a career path didn’t come together for Ken until college. While attending Northern Illinois University to complete

a BFA in illustration, he took classes in the University’s art department. Here, he received encouragement and guidance in how to make it as a full-time artist. Ken also found art history classes of particular interest because they provided awareness of artistic styles and approaches used throughout history. To complement this historical knowledge the studio courses allowed Ken to experiment in a variety of mediums. He ultimately settled into his first medium of watercolor. Ken states, “I enjoy working from light to dark and watching the painting slowly evolve into life.” Much as Blake is a storyteller with words, Ken Ferguson documents stories of those who have come before with his astonishingly provocative images. Regardless of the subject, ancient Puebloans of the American Southwest, a Dog Soldier of the Southern Cheyenne, or a Dragoon of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard,
Ken’s characters come forth, from the surface, to meet us eye to eye in this century. Over the last 30 years, as a professional artist, Ken has developed his unique technique of using multiple overlays of pigment and controlled washes combined with dry brush and splatter. His use of contrasting techniques of tightly controlled areas juxtaposed with looser areas provides the paintings with a high level of detail and depth. The finishing touch is a clear archival acrylic varnish that eliminates the need for glass when framing the piece. Ken’s goal is to depict not only the individual in history but also include the objects of the era in proper context with his subject. To accomplish this task, Ken is constantly researching firsthand pertinent collections, in museums, libraries, galleries, and private collections. He also has a personal library containing museum catalogs from around the world. This, in combination with historic site visits, provides the historic integrity for his work. Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine honored Ken as a Master of the Southwest in 2014. His “storytelling portraits” are with private and corporate clients around the world. Throughout Ken Ferguson’s long career he has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions and has enjoyed the representation of notable galleries. The concluding third installment of the popular “Ip Man” series hits theaters with the impressive Donnie Yen again playing the title character. If you aren’t sold on the presence and prowess of Yen, may I suggest that you remedy this immediately by watching “Iron Monkey”, the 1993 martial-arts masterwork that featured fight choreography from famed stunt coordinator and director Yuen Woo-Ping. “Ip Man 3” again displays the wonderful, at times beautiful, fight compositions but also adds a touching love story amidst all the flying fists…oh, did I fail to mention that Mike Tyson is in this film too. Master Ip (Donnie Yen) is in China circa 1959. Living a low-key life with his wife (Lynn Hung) and young son, Master Ip is respected amongst the community and rightfully recognized as one of the Masters of Wing Chun kung fu. The school that his son attends is targeted by a foreign gangster (Mike Tyson); Master Ip is forced into action to protect the community. However, this isn’t the only foe: a local martial arts rival (Jin Zhang) has plans to challenge Ip Man for the title of Wing Chun Master. “Ip Man” is based on the real life Chinese master teacher, who famously taught the legendary Bruce Lee. This meeting between

the master and the student is the introduction for the film. It’s a reunion, glimpsed briefly at the end of the second film, which fans of the franchise have been waiting for and it’s every bit as charming and entertaining as it should be. That’s one of the prevailing qualities of “Ip Man 3”, the charm that it fully understands and utilizes to heighten moments for the greatest possible impact. The audience knows that they are watching an action movie; it’s not a secret that Mike Tyson is in the film or that the Bruce Lee character would have a more substantial introduction, but the encounters with these characters are still thrilling to watch because they are composed in the same way a promoter would hype a title fight. Yes, even the meeting with Mike Tyson playing a ruthless gangster named Frank. I have to admit that I was
tentative about Mike Tyson being in the film. And in the first scene with Tyson my worries were confirmed with poor acting, lousy dialog, and a terrible mishmash of languages. But as the film moved forward and Tyson stopped talking, filmmaker Wilson Yip composed moments that placed the former heavy weight boxer in an intimidating light by putting him into full-on boxing mode, shadow boxing and speed bag training to assist. When Master Ip confronts him, the setting has been threateningly established. This fight scene isn’t even the best one in the film. Yuen WooPing composes some impressive moments throughout; however, it’s not only the fight scenes that are a highlight here. The story of Master Ip and his wife is touching, bringing a surprising emotional aspect that was missing from the previous films. Yen’s calm and purposeful character composition assists greatly during these quiet tender moments. This isn’t the last film to portray the legendary Master Ip, but it’s supposedly the final one for Donnie Yen, and it’s in this performance that Yen is firmly established not only as a martial arts superstar but also a wholly capable dramatic actor. “Ip Man 3” is a fitting conclusion to this franchise, going out with a fury of punches both physical and emotional.

Pet of the Week: James Dean Meet James Dean! This 6-month-old Brown Tabby kitten is as cool as his name. He’s calm, gentle, and loves to curl up with you to read a book or watch some TV. He’s a young boy and quite small, though he might grow a bit more. This kitty is also litter box trained! He hasn’t shown any destructive behaviors and doesn’t get distressed in new places.
