softball from page 11 After 7-1 and 6-2 defeats at the hands of the Toros in February the Jaguars fell 8-2 in their third meeting. “All the girls have grown as players,” Taylor said. “I like the effort, but we’re making mistakes that hurt us at times. I’d rather we go for it though. If we’re diving for balls and being aggressive I can live with mistakes.” On Thursday Kaff, who has accepted a scholarship offer from Michigan State, proved the biggest obstacle. The right hander, who struck out 16, had a perfect game through 3 2/3 innings. “Chances are you’re going to face tough pitchers like that in the state tournament so we’re going to have to figure it out,” Taylor said. After striking eight out of the first nine batters, Kaff finally was met with some resistance from the Jaguars offense in the bottom of the fourth. Trailing 5-0, the Anthem squad put together a two-out rally. The sophomore ripped a pitch just inside the third base bag into the corner in left field. Along with breaking up the no hitter she erased the shutout and momentarily got her team back within striking distance at 5-2. stretch of the regular season if they are to earn a state berth. On Friday they bounced back with a 12-2 win over Ironwood. With 10 games remaining the Jaguars (12-10) sit at No. 22 in the Division I power rankings. The top 24 teams make the Division I playoffs. “We’re going to need a strong finish,” she said. “Obviously Mountain Ridge is a great team. They’ll be really tough, but a lot of those other games are very winnable if we come ready.” The Jaguars upcoming schedule includes a trip to Sandra Day O’Connor to face the Eagles on Thursday, a home game with North Canyon on Friday before a trip to Ironwood on Monday and a visit to Mountain Ridge on Tuesday. Even in one of their losses during a 3-3 stretch the Falcons put up nine runs in a one-run loss to Notre Dame on April 2. On Tuesday the Falcons took on South Mountain (results unavailable at press time). Their upcoming schedule includes a Friday trip to Prescott to take on the Badgers before a game at Thunderbird on Tuesday.
