George F. Miller, an astronomy and Plan II Honors senior, was presented with the George H. Mitchell Student Award for Academic Excellence Wednesday evening at a dinner ceremony hosted by the University Co-op. Miller was nominated by Don E. Winget, a professor in the Department of Astronomy, for a paper on which he is the lead author. The paper documents the discovery of two new planets by an international team led by Miller. University Co-op board chairperson Michael Granof presented the award to Miller, quoting Winget when he said, “[Miller] is indeed a stellar choice for this award.”
Miller was granted a prize of $20,000. Three prizes of $5,000 and three prizes of $2,000 were also awarded. Other prize winners included Jillian Owens, James Salazar, Jean Nava, Ramu Kharel, Ryan Truby and Seth Whitsitt. The University Co-operative Society presents the award every year to an undergraduate student who holds an exemplary academic record and has made an extraordinary contribution to their field of study. The award is named after co-op president and CEO George H. Mitchell who conceived the award program in 2000. — Christine Imperatore
