C-N Christmas video is pure joy to watch By MARK FROELICH

Watching the behavior of children during the Christmas season can be a joy to watch. Listening to them talk about Santa Claus and act a little silly makes many of us feel young at heart. A select group of energetic kindergarteners and first-graders from Defiance, Ayersville, Fairview and Hicksville elementary schools, and second-graders from Tinora Elementary School spent time on the “hot seat” during video interviews with The Crescent-News to discuss the Christmas season. What they revealed was nothing short of pure joy and laughter. The video can be viewed on The Crescent-News’ website at crescent-news.
com/videos. From the Fairview Elementary School Young 5 program, Henry Hinschlager and Peyton Dow-Rosebrock were the video’s showstoppers, though. Asked what they wanted for Christmas, Hinschlager said he wanted Shopkins for Christmas. Shopkins is a new line of toys described on the Internet as “super tiny, grocery-themed characters” that are hot-sellers this Christmas. After Hinschlager’s announcement that he wanted Shopkins, DowRosebrock’s face has a look of shock before she looks at him and says: “Those are girls’ stuff.” At this point, the fun discussion begins: Hinschlager (with priceless hand gestures): “Well, my mom said boys play with girls stuff, and girls

play with boys stuff.” Dow-Rosebrock: “Well, that’s not true.” Hinschlager: “Yes it is.” Both children are smiling the entire conversation and the banter continues back and forth. The best part was listening to Dow-Rosebrock reversing her position that boys play with boys' stuff and girls play with girls' stuff. That was just one of the cute highlights from the select group of interviews. The children answered a variety of questions including: • What is your favorite part of Christmas? • What is your favorite Christmas song? • Do you give Santa anything?

• Tell us about Santa Claus. • What do you want for Christmas? • Are you on the “naughty” or “nice” list? The video begins with a very cute segment of Fairview Elementary School kindergartener Aubrey Skinner-Krass looking at classmate Ethan Wonderly and saying “Your turn Ethan.” And then she scoots really close to him. There is plenty of fun watching the youngsters sing their own versions — or half-versions — of “Jingle Bells,” Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and even a rendition from Ayersville’s Brady Zartman of “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.”
You’ll surely laugh when Ava Mavis and Taylor Judd giggle constantly singing “Jingle Bells” and again on “Rudolph.” Milk and cookies appear to be the norm of what children give Santa Claus, but in the video, you’ll hear a variety of other items left for the jolly ol’ elf, too. One family left a mint cake, while another left cookies and orange juice. At 11 minutes in length, this video — which would be great for families to watch together at Christmas gatherings — concludes with a laughing Hicksville Elementary School kindergartener Lana King proclaiming that the video is done.
