By: Mark Infield On April 6, 2013, Ton Up N*C hosted the first annual S.E. Rochelle Reliability Run as a tribute to S.E. Rochelle’s contribution to North Carolina’s motorcycle heritage. Inspired by local motorcycle legend S.E. Rochelle of Durham, NC and modeled after his famous AMA Sanctioned Gypsy Day Tour, vintage motorbikes (1974 and older) from all over the world started and finished in Durham at the Motorco Music Hall. Billed as the ultimate two-wheel attrition test of mechanic and machine, the 120+ mile low speed round-trip ride went through the Carolina countryside via MotoMark1 in Burlington and Natty Greene’s Brewery in Greensboro and back to Motorco Music Hall. It was 81 miles from Natty Greene’s back to Durham. The entire ride was viewed via USTREAM on a huge screen at Motorco, which was very cool. When we arrived back at Motorco there were cold beverages and a food truck on site. Ton-up NC has really cool posters, patches, and t-shirts for sale and awards were given to the oldest motorbikes successfully completing the ride. Categories include: British, German, Italian, American, Japanese, and Scooter. The winners were: Scooter: Larua Windley on a 1964 Vespa 90, Japanese: Barry Whitley on a 1967 Suzuki X5 200cc, Italian: Stephen Sellars on a 1971 Moto Guzzi Ambassador, American: Bob Manzak on a 1945 Indian Chief, German: Tim Green on a1972 BMW R75/5, and British: (name not given) on a 1973 Norton Commando 850cc. This was really a fun run and a great ride. After all that poking around in the country, I hit the interstate and had to do the “ton up” to celebrate the day.
