JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

A huge warm welcome to the August 2016 edition of The Journal! This month we have yet another action packed magazine for you to enjoy. July was a busy month, it seems that the summer heat has failed to slow anyone down and the entire Mazarron area is busy with holiday makers and locals alike! Allow us to begin by admitting that we got the shock of our life with the “Brexit” result. Those who read last month’s magazine will remember that we predicted a vote for Britain to stay in the EU by a small margin. In the end the reverse was true! It was always going to be close to call, but it seems that Britian will be leaving the EU and this means big changes will be afoot over the next couple of years. How these changes will affect British people living in Spain remains to be seen, but will undoubtedly become clearer in time. This month we have a special section dedicated to the “Brexit” with articles and initial responses on the result from our advertisers. But the message to all should be simple; Don’t panic. It’s all going be ok. The sun will still shine, and the sky will stay blue. So enjoy, and we can worry about the implications, if any, as and when they arise. What has been happening in Europe seems to have had little effect on our economy, as local businesses seem to be going from strength to strength and growing all the time. This month one of our long term advertisers, legal specialists Corral & Alcaraz have opened a new office in Puerto de Mazarron to help meet the increasing demands of ex pat clients from all areas of Europe. Camposol Health Clinic at Camposol Business centre has invested significantly and in new equipment and have opened an X-Ray and E.C.G department, meaning that they can diagnose and treat an even wider range of illnesses in house, a first for Camposol! In addition to all of this Carol and John from the Black Bull Camposol, have now opened “The Black Bull Sports Bar” in El Alamillo in Puerto de Mazarron! We wish all our advertisers the best of luck in their new ventures, and wish all our readers a happy, relaxing month of August. Thanks for reading, Robbie Rutherford Proud to be a climate neutral publication

Lidl To Invest €350 Million And Create 800 Jobs In Spain German supermarket chain Lidl expects to open 40 new shops in Spain this year. This is the company’s largest investment in the country in its 22 years of presence here. Lidl is seeking to consolidate its position as the main discounter in Spain and with this in mind, the retailer is planning an investment of €350 million and the creation of about 800 jobs to fill vacancies in the new shops. This investment is 33% higher than in 2015. During the last five years, Lidl has invested more than €1 billion in Spain and has opened 535 shops, becoming the 5th biggest supermarket in the country, with 4.1% market share, according to figures from Kantar Worldpanel. Ferrán Figueras, Financial Director of Lidl Spain, said that the €350 million to invest in 2016 represent “a very important leap for the company, as it is a figure twice as big as the one achieved in average in recent past years.”

Eroski seeks to boost supermarket sales by opening 19 gas stations Spanish supermarket chain Eroski will invest €7 million in the construction of 19 gas stations over the next two years. Most of the new gas stations will be built next to an existing Eroski supermarket. The 19 new sites will be located in the regions of País Vasco, Baleares, Cantabria, Cataluña, Navarra and Galicia. The investment in the fuel retailing segment seeks to boost the sales of the supermarkets. According to the company, opening a gas station increases the sales of the existing supermarket by 4 percent. By the end of the summer three of the gas stations are to be constructed. Rosa Carabel, General Directos of retailing for Eroski, stated that the company will continue with its policy of setting low fuel prices.

Red Top Fly Catchers. Freedom from Flies from TJ Electrical Red Top Fly catchers are firmly established as the market leader in highly effective, easy to use and non toxic fly trap systems. The proven technology exploits the survival instincts of the flies in order to trap them. This means that the flies never become immune to the bait as in the case when using potentially toxic insecticides. The bait is especially appealing to female flies helping to break the breeding cycle and rid your property of annoying flies. The traps are easy to use. Simply place a minimum of 5 meters from the affected area and add the bait. To the bait add

some lukewarm water and within 24 hours the bait will activate and attract and trap flies. The more flies that enter the trap, the more effective the trap becomes leaving you free to enjoy the Spanish outdoor life without the nuisance of flies. Don’t be fooled by cheap imitations, Red Top fly catchers are the industry leading product, and are available for sale only at TJ Electrical on Camposol sector B. For more information on how the traps work and how you can

enjoy a fly free summer, drop into the shop and have a chat with one of the team who will be happy to advise you.

The Aftermath of BREXIT Who can believe that it was just a few weeks ago that we discovered the shocking news that Britain had in fact voted out of Europe! And with an eventful few weeks of politics following the groundbreaking decision with everything seemingly ‘up in the air’ and no one really knowing which direction they will be moving in, many of you have been left reeling and wondering just what does it all mean to your future here in Spain as ex-pats. Speaking to many of our expat clients they all seem to have the same worries:

* Will they be able to continue living/working here in Spain? * Will it be difficult to get residency coming from a non- EEC country? * Will will happen to property prices? * What about their Spanish Wills? * And health care? The main point to note is that under Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, Britain has two years to negotiate its exit deals with EU member states so until that time EVERYTHING WILL ESSENTIALLY REMAIN THE SAME because the UK will remain part of the EU during this period. So health care, pensions, residency etcetera will all continue as they are at the current time. Despite the treaty stating two years to

It is also compatible with ‘Repsol mĂĄs’ rewards program. ‘PagoClick Repsol’, stated a company release, will provide convenience to individuals who prefer not to step out of their vehicle such as those who

travel with kids, people with mobility difficulties, and those who put a premium on quick service. On its first phase, it can be used at 300 full service Repsol stations, 200 of which were selected for having high customer density.

Repsol has been a pioneer in innovation for being the first Spanish multinational company to install Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile payment system in its filling stations.

The oil company plans to expand it to more stations and increase the number of fuel products that can be purchased using the app.

The Top 5 Offences Drivers Get Done for During the Summer

Driving offences in the summer Summer’s here, a greater number of drivers are on the roads and hopefully everyone has more time to get out and about and have fun. It is also during the hottest months of July and August that the Guardia Civil step up their safety campaign on the roads and are even more vigilant when it comes to safety regulations.

According to Tráfico, last summer a total of 8.1 million car journeys were carried out on our roads. There were 200 car accidents and 225 people lost their lives as a result. In a bid to reduce the number of accidents, the DGT has put harsh sanctions in place. These are particularly punishing for the infractions that are repeated the most, some of which are detailed below. Speeding As much as 39% of all drivers fail to adhere to the speed limits in this country. For those that are caught, they face a sanction that ranges from 100 euro to 600 euro. A severe offence can result in the loss of up to 6 points from your license. Alcohol and drugs Between 6 and 12 June this year, a total of 2,283 drivers were reported by the Guardia Civil for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This is after 145,636 tests were carried out. The majority tested positive for alcohol (1,616), while 667 were found to have driven with drugs in their system. With regards to the sanctions, those that were caught driving under the influence of alcohol were fined a minimum of 500

euro and lost 4 points from their license, although the most severe fines reached 1,000 euro and 6 points. For drugs, offenders received sanctions of 1,000 euro and lost between 4 and 6 points. Mobile phone This is one that you see on a daily basis yourself while driving around, and when people say that they’ve never broken the law; they probably have. This year, the DGT decided to install 150 new state-ofthe-art technology radars that are capable of detecting whether a driver is talking on his mobile phone whilst in motion. This type of infraction is punished with a 200euro sanction and 3 points from your license.

to the skin during an accident. Any of these three infractions could lead to a fine of 200 euro and the loss of 3 points from your driving license. Vehicle maintenance If your car is not kept in tip-top condition, you could be faced with a fine of 200 euro. Examples include lights not working, poorly visible license plate, worn down types or an out-of-date ITV sticker.

Driving wearing flip-flops Although this may be an instinctive action during the summer, one that you do without even thinking twice about, it is actually illegal to drive a vehicle wearing flip-flops or any type of footwear that doesn’t do up at the back. This is obviously for safety reasons, as your shoe could slip off at any time and impede the correct use of the car’s pedals, therefore causing an accident. It is also prohibited to drive barefoot, or without wearing a T-shirt, as the latter could cause serious burns

A HISTORIC REFERENDUM On Thursday June 23, the people of Britain voted for a British exit, or Brexit, from the European Union in a historic referendum. This decision has prompted jubilant celebration whilst sending shockwaves through the global economy. Over the next two years or so, Britain will negotiate its exit under article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER BRITAIN EXITS THE EU Through the withdrawal negotiations, nothing will change for British expats in Spain because the UK will remain part of the EU during this transitional period. However, what happens after Britain has left the EU and how this may affect you is still unclear. LEGAL ASSISTANCE SERVICE Whilst many questions remain unanswered, Línea Directa would like to remind all its customers that its Legal Assistance service comes as standard in all their insurance policies. If you have a query you can call one of our lawyers. They offer information and advice on a wide range of matters such as taxes, purchase and rental of property, inheritance, family etc. As the Brexit negotiations evolve, our legal team will keep abreast of all the latest developments relating to events occurring in the Spanish territory and those to which Spanish legislation is applicable. 24-HOUR ASSISTANCE FOR EMERGENCY LEGAL CONSULTATIONS Should you require an immediate legal consultation, which due to the gravity of the matter in hand cannot wait, we offer a 24-hour legal advice service. Regardless of the time of day, we can provide immediate specialist legal advice for emergency incidents relating to you, your family or your home. IN ENGLISH The service is entirely in English. From the drafting and revision of legal documents to negotiations with third parties and or opposing parties. We can’t provide all the answers to the questions raised by the Britain’s exit of the EU, but we can provide sound legal advice for our expatriate customers living in Spain. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Línea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

What does the “Brexit” mean to the German Kutchen Studio?

The only advice that we can give is ACT NOW! Why? Because at German Kutchen Studio we have negotiated an industry leading special offer in the month of August.

Dear friends,

For every kitchen ordered in August, which can be fitted at any time within the year to suit your budget requirements and timescales, we can offer an AMAZING exchange rate of 1.40€ to the Great British Pound. By ordering your new kitchen THIS MONTH you can guarantee to beat any market fluctuations by securing this rate.

By Nick Maltby

I am sure that you will have many questions on the implications of the UK Brexit vote and the decision taken to leave the European Union, so I want to reassure you with my own view. What is done is done, the votes were cast and counted, and a consensus reached. So let us focus on the positives. The only thing that is certain right now is that no one seems to know the timescales for our exit from the EU, or, it seems, if the decision to leave is indeed final. However, every situation presents an opportunity depending on how we choose to see it. For instance, Switzerland is not part of the European Union but it is the second richest nation in the world, has its own tailored EU deal, adopts some EU rules and successfully trades with the EU. If we are indeed to come out of the European Union, we have this successful blueprint to follow, so we should remain hopeful that our new relationship with the EU will be a positive one.

This deal will last for August only and won’t come round again so please don’t hesitate to contact us directly for more information or visit our showroom. For your free consultation call me, Nick Maltby on 636306711 By Nick Maltby, Director of German Kutchen Studio.

Holiday Reservations Up by 10% Since Brexit!

Take a second look at the following words and consider what you see “OPPORTUNITYISNOWHERE”

For some strange reason, holiday reservations to Spain shot up 10% immediately after the Brexit vote result was announced. This was possibly due to the fact that many Brits believe that they won’t be allowed to travel anywhere outside of the country in the future!

Some of you may see “opportunity is no where”, while others will see “opportunity is now here” We firmly believe that it is the latter.

Equally, the number of Spaniards who made reservations to travel to the UK also went up at the same time – by an even bigger 17%.

As many of the people reading this will be aware, at German Kuchen Studio, we always deal directly with the manufacturer, Schuller , ensuring that we have no middlemen. This means that we can always offer the best deals directly to our clients.

On a global level, holidays to Great Britain booked by people living in other parts of the world went up 8% after the Brexit vote was known, while those reserved by the Brits to other countries rose 2%.

Both pre and post “Brexit” we were making plans to ensure that whatever the outcome, we were well placed to continue to offer the quality, service and, importantly, prices that we have become renown for. For people considering investing in a new kitchen, we understand that it might be difficult to judge the long-term impact on the decision leave the EU. Will exchange rates go up or down? Should they wait to invest in their new kitchen, or act now?

According to online travel agents eDreams, the decision by 52% to leave the EU has not had any negative impact whatsoever on consumers’ intention to travel. It’s been the complete opposite, in fact. Between 24 and 27 June, straight after the result was announced, holidays to other European countries that were reserved from Great Britain went up by 9%, while the percentage booked to other continents fell. The most popular holiday destination with reservations made during these

few days was Spain, which captured 23% of all the reservations. This makes Spain the preferred destination by the Brits, with 2,000 more bookings than its nearest rival. The second most popular destination was actually the UK (9%), followed by France, Italy and Ireland, which each took 7% of all the reservations. After these countries was Germany, with 5%, although this figure is actually lower than that of 2015. Although London residents are generally those that tend to travel the most, after the referendum, holiday reservations made by them fell 9% after the vote. On the other hand, reservations went up by people living in Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol, by figures ranging from 11% to 58% from last year. The majority of people that visit the UK on holiday come from the UK itself, Spain, France, Germany and Italy – with around 68% of all visitors. In the case of Spain, reservations to travel to the UK went up 17% after the Brexit vote was revealed, probably as a result of the drop in the pound sterling. An increase in the number of reservations made from Germany (+15%) and Italy (+0.22%) was also registered. Nevertheless, the greatest rise in the number of reservations was seen inside the UK itself, with a rise of 26% in bookings.

Gibraltar is demanding a second referendum once a post-Brexit deal has been negotiated because Brits were given a “false prospectus” on what Brexit would look like. “In the referendum it was either in, with our existing conditions, or out. But nobody knew what out meant,” Fabian Picardo, the chief minister of Gibraltar, said in an interview. The leader of the UK’s most proEU voting district said voters should be given a second chance to decide between remaining part of the EU and accepting a new post-Brexit accord with

EU member states.

up the United Kingdom,” he said.

“Some people who voted to leave might have thought that an out deal meant something completely different,” he said on the eve of a trip to London and Brussels.

The tiny territory of Gibraltar with its 33,000 population relies heavily upon workers living in Spain, supplies imported from Spain and its ability to trade to within the European Single Market.

“Some people might have voted with rose-tinted spectacles, and others might have been persuaded on the basis of a false prospectus that Brexiters advanced.” Gibraltar is heavily reliant on EU membership not least because it allows freedom of movement across its border with Spain. Just days after the referendum result, Picardo revealed that he had been speaking with Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, about exploring their options as countries that both want to remain within the EU. “I can imagine a situation where some parts of what is today the member state United Kingdom are stripped out and others remain,” he said. “That means that we don’t have to apply again for access, we simply remain with the access we have today, and those parts that leave are then given a different sort of access, which is negotiated but not necessarily under Article 50.” But the discussion prompted swift response from Spain which said it would never accept separate negotations with Scotland or Gibraltar and the EU. “The Spanish government is opposed to any negotiations with anyone else but the British government,” Rajoy said after 27 EU leaders excluding Britain met in Brussels to discuss the Brexit vote. “The United Kingdom leaves and with it, all those who make

As expected in the referendum on June 23rd, Gibraltar backed remaining part of the EU with a massive 96 percent mandate (19,322) on a turnout of 84 percent. Likewise all 32 Scottish council areas voted to remain, with a total of 62 percent (1.6 million) on a turnout of 67 percent. “There will be no talks, or even talks about talks, about the sovereignty of Gibraltar,” Picardo said in a speech to Gibraltar’s parliament just hours after the Brexit vote. Picardo’s comments came in the wake of Spain implying it was closer to bringing Gibraltar under its control. “The Spanish flag is much closer to the Rock,” said Spain’s acting foreign minister, José Manuel García-Margallo on the morning of the Brexit result.

This novel is a geopolitical adventure story. Sean Ashton, a young Special Branch Officer is sent to observe a new political party ‘The Millennium Party’ which is making waves in England. On Ashton’s first contact with the new party he is exposed to the electrifying oratory of Robin Murry the new party’s leader. Ashton immediately becomes a convert. Ashton joins the Party ostensibly to report to his Special Branch masters but continuous exposure to Robin Murry means his loyalties soon lie entirely with the Party. Ashton leaves the Special branch and quickly becomes Murry’s right hand man, working in a Party that seems to be delivering the people’s choice. The background is set against a new and desperately deep world recession. Massive unemployment and dissatisfaction with the old Parties mean that the Millennium party grows exponentially. In the curious mind of Robin Murry is a fantastic plan and Ashton helps this plan’s realization. Murry builds a world Super Power and Ashton is with him all the way. Utterly ruthless and recognised as an organisational genius, Ashton is the man who delivers this new world Super Power .

Pets a nd other a nimals

Summer is heating up and the ferals are mainly staying out of the way and using the heat of the day to sleep… A few kittens are about but compared to the same time last year there are very few in reality, which is a good situation for everyone and of course the welfare of the community cats here. During the months of July and August CKK will only be trapping cats under certain circumstances (sickness etc) mainly due to the extreme heat – getting trapped can cause cats extreme stress, making them even hotter and as cats cannot sweat they can easily become over heated and collapse – also, some of the ferals have had kittens and are nursing so we cannot risk potentially taking a mummy away from her kittens for any length of time. A year ago a small kitten was found

leg was not broken but had severe nerve damage and it was believed the leg would have to be removed…. One of the CKK ladies offered to foster this kitten who was named “Bandit” and he was funded via private donations from all over the world… After lots of specialists tests and a couple of operations the team of carers/surgeons and physios managed to save his leg and in June this year, after a year in foster and approx €1500 raised for him he travelled to his new home in Germany with 4 legs intact! Whilst he will always be disabled he is able to use the damaged leg and gets around just fine, this will make his life when he gets older much easier for him – we are so happy to have accomplished this for a lovely local boy! After the heat of the summer subsides we will be looking for more volunteers, particularly on sectors A and B – where we will be starting to target certain areas methodically. We will need people to help with daily feeding at the stations, assisting with trapping and vet drop off/ pick up. If anyone is interested in offering volunteering please email to camposolkittykitty@aol.com for further details. We are also running another of the popular day trips to Benidorm on Weds 14th September, which will take in the market and give you a free day to explore Benidorm and maybe the old town for a spot of lunch and a wander along the paseo – all for €16 for the day (leaves Camposol 9am sharp and departs Benidorm 6pm to arrive back on Camposol around 8pm) All proceeds to the neutering programme of stray and feral cats in the local area. Please call 628 147 915 for reservation of tickets – please not this number is NOT a general number for CKK it is purely for reservation of Benidorm trip tickets. Please also remember we have a bin located in the Noah’s Arc shop on Camposol B for any food donations for the cats. Thank you for your continued support Alison

Top 17 Original Dog Na mes of 2016 With so many dogs around it’s sometimes hard to think of an original name for your new canine friend. Here are some ideas for dog names that are a little different:

www.thejournalspain.es

1.Saint This year Kim Kardashian broke the Internet, and then she had another baby. To no one’s surprise, the famous offspring of Yeezus was named Saint, and we’re sure that pup owners who believe that their dog is the chosen one will follow suite. 2. Pinot “Pinot Noir” was a hilarious song in the new Netflix show, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s also a great name for a wine lover’s dog. 3. Charlotte The second royal baby of Prince William and Kate Middleton is sure to set off a whole new wave of four-legged Charlottes (or Charlies)! 4. Matcha This green tea took over Starbucks, when people realized it was a healthier way to consume a lot of caffeine. It was one of the biggest “food” trends of the year, and also makes the perfect name for a super energized, zany pup. 5. Boo Boo is the name of the Instagram-famous Pomeranian but it’s also the name of a character in the hit show, Orange is the New Black. Not only is Big Boo an awesome character, but she’s also a doglover, so double-win there. 6. Annalise Another name from a hit show! Annalise is the professor and main character in the popular TV Show, How to Get Away With Murder. While the name is adorable for a baby girl, we have to say that a cute little female pup would also wear that name well. 7. Marnie Another famous dog from social media, Marnie stole the hearts of crowds everywhere with her hilarious photos, commentary, and little tongue sticking out of the side of her mouth. She’s a senior pup who’s just trying to have fun, and we can only hope that there are more Marnies in store for us! 8. Toast Okay, so there were a LOT of Instagram

2016

dogs this year. Toast is an NYC pup who’s getting married next year (yes, you read that right) and in celebrating the canine nuptials, we hope that others are named in her honour. 9. Burrito When you think of food chains that were in the media this year, one chain should automatically come to mind. Taco Bell who opened their first franchise in the Murcia region. We think Burrito would be the most adorable name for a little Pug or French Bulldog. 10. Shonda Shonda Rhimes has completely monopolized Thursday night television with her three hit shows – Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, and Scandal. Shonda-fans, consider naming your pup after the great Queen of primetime television herself. 11. Katniss, Peeta, Prim, or Gale The final Hunger Games movie came out

this year, and while we were super sad, we know that this isn’t the last we’ll see of a Katniss or a Prim. Fans of the trilogy are sure to name their brave, adventurous dogs after the strong characters in the films.

call you on your cell phone. Just kidding, dogs can’t use cell phones, but they can be named after the influential rapper who came up with the viral hit, “Hotline Bling”. 15. Brooklyn

12. Chewie Furry dogs everywhere will continue to carry on the name of the legendary Wookie in the Star Wars franchise. With the new movie having just come out, we’re assuming the name will be popular once again! The force is strong with these ones. 13. Khaleesi The name of the beautiful and influential wife of the khal in the Game of Thrones series is still going strong as a popular name in the dog world. We think it’s unique and pretty! 14. Drake (or Bling, because come on) A perfect name for the dog who used to

Because can the Posh and Becks really be wrong? 16. Comet One of TV’s most-famous dogs is back! With Full House returning to the small screen, the family’s Golden Retriever is also making a comeback – as well as his name (we predict). 17. Elsa In 2015 you could have asked any little girl (or boy!) what they wanted to name their new dog, and they would probably have said “Elsa” after the extremely popular Disney film, Frozen.

Bullrings and me have a relationship of sorts. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed evenings in their inner sanctums, even one outside, protesting with the Spanish, over events within.

I’ll never attend a bull fight, but of course like many places, bullrings also double as concert and display venues. I’ve watched dancing horses and flamenco in portable bullrings, and seen major star Ricky Martin, he of the Latino hips, twice. So on the first of July,we checked into a Murcia hotel, carrying our Welsh flags and inflatable daffodil, to see one Welsh Icon in concert on Spanish soil, Sir Tom Jones. There was much excitement in the air as we headed for the bars surrounding the venue, chit chatting to people we recognised, and gleeful strangers. ‘The best laid plans of mice and men’

however, had been specially drawn up to cover this situation. Who knew, a few months ago, sat on a squishy Swansea sofa, that such a conflict of interests would arise, just weeks after hitting the ‘pay for tickets’ button on the screen?

‘Don’t panic’ I told Virgo-man, ‘there are plenty of bars around the bullring, I’m sure we’ll catch some of it.’

Those Tom Jones tickets were printed off in full view of Mumbles pier (our library has amazing views) where other stars like Bonnie Tyler and Catherine Zeta Jones have homes, and where Ian Botham likes to lick his Joe’s Ice Cream. Those tickets crossed the Severn Bridge into England, sailed the Bay of Biscay, bumped the full length of Spain, into Murcia.

I found Tom’s Facebook page, sent him an urgent message asking for a TV screen to be erected on stage behind him (volume down, naturally) or failing that, regular score updates, if he could see his way clear, diowlch yn fawr.

All good so far. Then came the European Championships, and we all know what happened next. Suddenly, Wales was everywhere. Our flags and daffodil were waved about in certain venues along with our collection of the various Taff’s available, who were rounded up, dressed up, and often forcibly sat in front of TV screens to watch ‘The Wales Games’. Going from strength to strength is just brilliant. But not on a night involving Tom Jones. Which is exactly what happened, and the Belgium game, a ‘biggie’ in the scheme of things, being a quarter final, suddenly fell on the same evening.

We caught the first quarter in a bar opposite our numbered entrance, two of us singing the anthem in our dragon sarongs, amid a mix of nationalities, some wearing ‘sex bomb’ t-shirts and pink bowlers. Jones the Voice gave his all. He also gave the requested updates, despite texts pinging joyfully away meaning we knew the result before Tom did. A Scotsman from Benidorm sat nearby, insisted on hearing them too. Loudly. ‘Oh what a night!’ by the Four Seasons, was my post-midnight, Facebook status. We just kept singing Delilah.

First of all, thanks to all who give to our buckets (lucky 13th July was a record for us!) and donate unwanted pots and plants: So many people arriving in Camposol on holiday have noticed the marked difference since their previous visit; each Euro helps with planting and landscaping. This month, all the donated trees and plants have been planted, the new planters along the dual carriageway have been potted up, any dead Polygala bushes have been replaced, potholes along the dual carriageway have been repaired and a donated stone table has been assembled in front of the bench at the junction of Calle Puerto Lumbreras and the dual carriageway. Project Manager Ken and his wife Lyn are now in the UK for 3 months and we look forward to their return in September, his help with our watering burden is missed! If you have any spare time, please give the plants near your casa some water, too; every area is suffering in these high temperatures. May we also politely request that dog owners pick up any mess their pets leave behind? It only takes two minutes to deposit a bag in the bin and will keep the area smell and poofree, thanks.

Get the Look: Spanish-Mediterranean Courtyard As the weather warms up, many of us are thinking about how to spruce up our outdoor areas for lounging, parties and dinners outside. SpanishMediterranean courtyard gardens provide plenty of inspiration. These cozy enclosed patios are designed to be an extension of the home’s living space, with areas to sit, dine and relax surrounded by the classic good looks of tile, cooling fountains and a few choice plants. 1. Water feature. A colorfully tiled fountain makes a stunning focal point in this courtyard, while providing the soothing sound of water. The bright colors are repeated in the cluster of dark pink flowers in the corner and a pair of blue chairs. Keep in mind that you will need to

run electrical power to a recirculating pump that is in the fountain’s reservoir (pool). 2.Patio. There are paved areas for outdoor living, usually made of tile, stone or brick. This courtyard patio has a Mediterranean influence and the floor is done in a herringbone pattern. Notice wrought-iron window grilles, a feature of Spanish architecture, in the fireplace wall.

3. Hardscaping. The emphasis is on the usable living space; plants are used to enhance the patios and tends to be on the perimeter and in containers. This patio is made of peach-toned flagstone with the spaces filled with soft ground cover. The lounge chairs face a luxurious pool with a cobalt-blue tiled wall fountain. 4. Stucco walls. The low walls of this Spanish bungalow show off the front

of the house, and its old-style gate is very inviting. The mustard gold color is common for Mediterranean style homes. As you come through the front gate at this home, you are greeted by a tall column-shaped fountain in a front flagstone courtyard. It appears to be centered with the arched window and is balanced with Italian cypress.

Health &Wellbeing It is important to drink fluids before you even begin to feel thirsty.Your body uses thirst to indicate that you are approaching dehydration. Rather than drinking to quench your thirst, it is healthier to continuously replenish fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty at all. 2. GO WITH WATER INSTEAD OF SUGARY BEVERAGES

10 Great Ways to Stay Hydrated in the Sumer Heat Keeping yourself hydrated under hot weather conditions is very important to avoid heat-related illness. Proper hydration becomes even more important when performing strenuous, physical activity in high temperatures. The more your body sweats under such conditions, the more fluid you need to replace. If you ever suffer from dehydration in hot weather, you are subjecting yourself to the following health risks: Heat stroke Heat exhaustion Heat cramps Heat rash Here are 10 ways you can stay hydrated in hot weather to avoid heat related illness: 1. DRINK BEFORE YOU FEEL THIRSTY

English Speaking Dentist

While a sugary beverage can help quench your thirst, it also carries excess calories that can be detrimental to your health. Since you have to hydrate your body with fluids more frequently under hot weather conditions, you’ll be taking in more calories than you usually do if you look towards sugary beverages for hydration. 3. KEEP A WATER BOTTLE WITH YOU Invest in a reusable water bottle and always keep it handy. A water bottle will allow you to drink your fluids regularly and before you feel thirsty. 4. USE NATURAL FLAVORING IN YOUR WATER

Sponsored by Camposol Farmacia

little natural flavoring from a slice of fruit like lemon or strawberries, or some fresh cucumbers is a great way to add a little flavour to your water, or even try adding a little fruit squash. 5. DRINK SPARKLING WATER If the carbonation from fizzy pop is what makes it so appealing, you can get that same fizzy feeling from a bottle of sparkling water. It has all the bubbles and fizz of a pop, minus the calories. You can also opt for sparkling water the next time you are trying to eat healthy at a restaurant. 6. AVOID ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Having a couple of frosty beers from the fridge sounds like a great idea after a fun-filled day of activities at the beach or by the pool, but it’s not a good idea if hydration is your goal. While you might feel more refreshed at first, you’re likely to feel dehydrated soon afterwards due to the effects of alcohol from all that beer. Alcohol is a diuretic and will cause you to urinate more frequently, so it’s best to either limit yourself or not drink any at all. 7. HAVE A SPORTS DRINK DURING VIGOROUS EXERCISE Outdoor activities under hot weather can be quite common, especially during the summer. Biking, hiking, mountain climbing, white water rafting, beach volleyball or just a day playing recreational sports at the park are all common summer activities. There is a chance that your body will produce excessive sweat due to all

Sometimes people have trouble drinking enough water to stay hydrated because they prefer something with flavor, and/or it’s difficult for them to drink water when they aren’t feeling thirsty. A

8. DRINK COOL FLUIDS

Zucchini

You can plan ahead for a day out under the sun by freezing some water bottles the night before; just make sure the bottles are freezer-safe. Cool fluids can help encourage you to drink more during activity in hot weather. A cold bottle of water will not only help you stay cool, it will also help you to stay hydrated and entice you to drink before you even feel thirsty.

Celery

9. TRACK YOUR WATER INTAKE It can be very easy to forget to hydrate, especially if you’re working outdoors and are more focused on the task at hand. Try setting an alarm on your watch or phone to help you remember when it is time to hydrate. This is why having a reusuable water bottle handy is important for staying hydrated. 10. EAT YOUR WATER Try adding more fruits and vegetables that are high in water content to your meals and snacks on the days you plan on being outside in hot weather conditions. You can even chill or freeze these hydrating fruits and veggies as a frozen treat or a cold snack. Refuge the buddhist path to inner freedom After the August break we will start the Yoga Shala Community Activities again .. one of those activities will be Buddist Meditation So i thought it fitting to dedicate this space to start to talk about this path of spiritual and psychological development as applicable now as it has been for the past two and a half millenia. Taking Refuge is the first step on the buddhist path to inner freedom, but it is not something new. We have been taking refuge all our lives, though mainly in external things, hoping to find security and happiness. Some of us take Refuge in money some in drugs. Some take refuge in food, in mountain climbing or in sunny beaches. Most of us seek security and satisfaction in a relationship with a man or a woman. Throughout our lives we have drifted from one situation to the next, always in expectación of final satisfaction. Our succesive involvements may sometimes offer

We should try to determine for ourselves whether or not our experiences have been beneficial. When we take refuge only in agreeable sensations or emotions, the problem of attachment is merely aggravated and we are sadly disenchanted because we expect lasting satisfaction from what turns out to be meer flickers of pleasure. We take refuge in darkness and sink even deeper into darkness. Buddhist refuge is a process of turning inward that begins with our discovery of our own unlimited potentail as human beings. This discovery generates a tremendous zeal for the development of our inborn wisdom-energy. Complete perfect wisdom is buddhahood. Perhaps the word ‘buddha’ conjures up a remote and rather oriental image. But ‘buddha’ is just a word, and it means a totally opened mind, an ‘opened lotus’. When we finally realize our human potential and arrrive at this total openness of mind we become buddhas. However at the outset we feel hopeless, helpless and incapable of self improvement. Buddha seems to be somewhere in the sky, completley out of reach, and we are nothing. But this is not true, we should not underestimate ourselves. Shakyamuni, the historical buddha, was once even more confused than we are, but by discovering his own latent wisdom-energy he attained enlightenment. There are countless buddhas and all living beings have the capacity to unify their minds and have the clarity of enlightenment. LATEST NEWS

On 23rd June, 23 members of the society gathered at La Paraleja Golf Course, for the monthly Stapleford competition. Member numbers were slightly down as some had already decided it was getting too hot, or was it the Brexit vote that caused them to hurry back to the UK? We all started from the first tee, and several members immediately found the water, which doesn’t help the temperament. Especially when the second is an island green. However, at the 19th hole the cards were checked in, and in joint third place was Pete Smithson, and Richard Dixon with a score of 34points They were followed home in 2nd place by Jeff Perry, who returned a score of 36points. The winner however, was Norrie Bull, (pictured above - hand on heart) with a great score of 37points.

Also pictured with Norrie, are the two nearest the pin winners – George Bricknal (left), and John Brown (centre). Our August meeting will be at Lorca Resort Golf Course on Wednesday 24th

The month of July is always the quietest month of the year as far as football in Mazarron is concerned although the closing stages of the Euro 2016 competition kept the interest going in some quarters, unfortunately not for the English ex-pats!! June saw the resignations of the Board of Directors of both local football teams, Mazarron FC and CD Bala Azul with outgoing Mazarron President Jose Rodriquez actively seeking a suitable replacement to take the Club forward. At the time of writing we have heard that the Club has a new President and that the team was registered with the Murcia Federation for the 2016/17 season just hours before the deadline which is great news for all its loyal supporters. Full details will be available in next month’s edition. Mazarron has an excellent set up with junior teams from 5 years old up to 18 years in addition to the senior team which will take its place again in the Preferente Autonomica for the 2016-17 season. With a new President, a new Coach and probably virtually a new team, it should once again prove to be an interesting and, hopefully, exciting season and, more than ever, the new administration will need the support of the Spanish and ex-pat community. Outgoing coach Victor has already taken four of Mazarron’s squad from last season to his new club CF Molina. Leading scorer Jose, Palote, Champi and Miguel, who joined Mazarron in the closing stages of last season, will be in the opposition team when Molina meet Mazarron next season. Juanfran and Juanma have joined local rivals Olimpico de Totana who were promoted to the Tercara last season. We wish them all well and thank them for their services to the Club. Although there is little news from the Club at the moment in view of the activity behind the scenes, players normally report for training at the end of July with the fixtures for 2016-17

Los Amigos de Mazarron FC received the “Labor de apoyo al deporte” (working to support sports) award at the 15th “Gala of Sports” Evening at the Hotel Playa Grande. The evening was organised jointly by La Voz and the Department of Sport for Mazarron and our trophy, sponsored by Bar Sienna, was presented to Treasurer Gerard Mulligan for our efforts in supporting both Mazarron FC and Mazarron Football Base. The speech by the compere before the award was presented on stage referred to the support given by Los Amigos to Mazarron FC both home and away to make it one of the best supported teams in the league and stated that we were “ambassadors” for the name of Mazarron. in Mazarron generally and both the Mayoress of Mazarron and the director of La Voz congratulated Los Amigos for their hard work in supporting the team which was much appreciated by the town. The latest Los Amigos Luncheon Club outings were to the Restaurante Hermanos Mandola near Aledo on 28th June and a return visit to the Restaurante Casa del Nono in Isla Plana on Tuesday 26th July. Both were once again well attended and members and friends were again treated to excellent food and drink!! For full details of all the monthly Luncheon Club outings please email Maggie at hariinspain@gmail. com. Mazarron FC hosted a Veterans Football Tournament at the end of June with teams from Cadiz, England, Almeria, Calaspara and Lorca taking part in addition to Mazarron FC. The all day event at the Estadio Municipal saw Almeria come out on top with Mazarron as runners up and the English Veterans Frostoms FC from Workington in fourth place. Over €1000 was raised to help a local child with health problems. Tickets for the Presidents Ball at Mariano’s on Tuesday 27th September are selling well. Queen Universe will be on stage to present a very special tribute to Queen on the evening when Los Amigos will be celebrating their 10th birthday. Comedian Justin Sane

who has recently returned to Spain will also be in attendance with his unique brand of comedy and a local magician will be performing close up tricks at the tables to the amazement of all guests!! A typical Mariano’s supper will add to what is sure to be a fabulous evening so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are €15 including supper or €10 without food and are on sale at the Club House Camposol every Thursday (4pm) or email pamada.1130@yahoo.co.uk. However, during July and early August, meetings are normally suspended as there is no football and a lot of members are away. However, some members will still be popping into the Club House every Thursday afternoon at 4 pm so why not join them for a club for a chat and a refreshing drink in beautiful surroundings and pick up a membership form for next season. Membership payments are also accepted on Thursdays during the summer from the Club House (4 pm).

Last Race Day of the SAMM Spring Series 2016

Los Amigos membership runs from 1st August each year and costs just 10€ which includes reduced coach travel and reduced prices to most of our social events including the very successful monthly luncheon club.

Today was John’s first race outing in his new single hander and he did exceptionally well getting to grips with his new toy. Some tweaking is needed to get the best out of the dinghy and no doubt John has a list of adjustments to work on.

Mazarrón Bowls Club Husband and Wife Team Triumph The Richard Cooper Trophy , played on the 25th June was won by Gillian and Harold Morris, with another husband and wife team, Jim and Alex Coughlan the very worthy runners-up. This knock out match was played in blistering heat and at the end both of the finals couples had played 48 ends!! No mean feat when you are a pensionista!! The match was a straight 2 wood knock out competition, sponsored by Julie Cooper, whose husband, Richard, died suddenly last June. Summer evening bowling continues with many of the new members recruited from the Open Day coming along to practice and socialise afterwards. These evenings are becoming a very social occasion, although the bowling is taken seriously, albeit friendly, the socialising afterwards leads to making new friends and acquaintances for all. The bar is always open to provide hot and cold snacks and the odd cold beer and glass of wine! With many changes in the Federating body, to which all Clubs in Spain have to belong, the Committee are working hard to ensure that all members know exactly what is happening, preparing timescales for registration and for the Club Championships and Winter Leagues. After the long balmy summer and, with the slightly cooler weather in September, events start again. In September there will be an EGM to appoint a new Club Captain and Vice President and then in October, the Winter Leagues will start on a Monday and Friday, the interclub triples competition on a Tuesday and of course, the Club Championships. MBC are always at their home ground on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from around 18.30 hrs and we would love to meet you, so please come along for a

Sunday June 19th marked the last race day of what has been a memorable SAMM Spring Season. With six members of the Balaton Group and the regular crew of the Catamaran away, only four Shoestring Group boats competed. Dos (Stormin’ Norman and Mike Bates); Tres (Tug Wilson, Pat Fleck); Cuatro (Jack Moss, Di Hardwick and ?) and the RS Quba (John Down).

CTD was extremely busy with hundreds of revellers enjoying a day out on the Mar Menor and, although it is great for the kids, our crews wished the jet-skiers would take a more care and show some courtesy for others. The first race started in calm conditions and, apart from being drenched by spray from the jet-skiers, was fairly uneventful. The four laps were completed in 30 minutes and it was decided to increase the distance between the buoys for the second as the wind was beginning to pick up. Everybody had a good start and Cuatro and RS Quba were neck and neck for much of the race. All was going well until the 2nd lap when Dos capsized on the downward leg and retired. The RS Quba and Cuatro continued to battle it out as Tres gained on them inch by inch. The increased wind speed made for an exciting race which was over in 1 hour. Results:- Race 1: Tres, Cuatro, Dos, RS Quba. Race 2: Tres, Cuatro, RS Quba. SAMM racing starts again in September. For info on SAMM go to www. sailingmarmenor.com

World’s most fuel efficient car hits ‘31,000mpg’ for new record

shouldn’t expect to see cars like this on the road anytime soon, it certainly shows a very energy-efficient future.

Electric-powered TUfast eLi14 can travel 710 miles on just a single kWh of energy, equivalent to 31,000mpg Though there are plenty of cars out there with outstanding fuel economy, a team from the Technical University of Munich has produced a vehicle which makes even the 94mpg Peugeot 208 look like a gasguzzler. The TUfast eLi14 recently took to the track at Audi’s test facility, and managed to set a run with energy use of 710mi/kWh. It gets better, though, as on their second run the team managed 765.53mi/kWh, a new world record. For perspective, if that was converted to petrol power, the eLi14 could travel 11,000km on just a single litre of fuel – the equivalent of driving to Tokyo with miles to spare. Or to put it an even easier way, it’s a staggering 31,000mpg. The eLi14 was originally created for the 2014 Shell Eco Marathon, where it posted a good (though not record-breaking) performance, but for this record attempt it was upgraded. In search of more efficiency, the TUfast team upgraded the motor with a custom controller, silver wire coils, and ultra-low friction bearings for the custom wheels. It’s a tiny singleseater, teardropshaped threewheeler, piloted by someone small enough to fit into the cramped cockpit. Once shoehorned inside they have to drive in a lying-down position. It’s not designed to mix with normal traffic. Though we

Goldeneye (1995)

Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) Synopsis: The famous Aston Martin DB5 returned for Pierce Brosnan’s introduction as James Bond in Goldeneye. MI6 psychologist Caroline has been sent to evaluate Bond, who takes her for a drive in the DB5. They are soon enticed into a friendly race by the Ferrari Spider 355 wielding Xenia Onatopp. Although in reality the DB5 wouldn’t come close to matching the Ferrari’s speed, Bond manages to take the lead.

The fast driving manages to scare his passenger Caroline, who asks him to stop the car at once. Bond complies, putting on the handbrake in an abrupt emergency stop, replying “as you can see, I have no problem with female authority.” He

Property, Financial and Legal APPARENTLY – IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD – AS WE KNOW IT – AND WE ARE ALL GOING TO HELL IN A HAND CART !! Or so you would think if you read some of the headlines in the UK press in recent days. The only certainty in the UK at present is uncertainty and that can very quickly translate into doubts and fears about what is to come. And for many expats, feeling out on a limb, with only the doom merchants on BBC News and Sky News to give them any information, it must seem like the end of the world is nigh. BUT IT ISN’T!! Despite all the predictions, the Stock Market has rallied and Sterling, although down, is nowhere near the levels we have seen in the past. It’s not so very long ago that we saw virtual parity for the euro. Regardless of what the news told you, 1.08 euros to the pound or similar, many were finding their cash translated into one euro to the pound. It hurt, but the world didn’t end. LEGAL CLAIMS AGAINST PLUSVALIA TAX What is Plusvalia tax? You need to think about two taxes when selling your property. Capital Gains Tax Plusvalia Tax Plusvalia tax used to be a small tax when selling or inheriting your property, but now it has become a higher amount. This tax is calculated and taxed by your Local Council on the increase in the value of the URBAN land. This is taxed only on the land and not on the value of the building. Rates are set by every Council and can vary dramatically between neighbouring areas. The tax value of the land, so called “valor del suelo”, can be found on the bill for your “IBI”. The Plusvalia is actually a tax on the value of the land on which the house stands. The municipality argues that the land value has increased because over the years a variety of infrastructure improvements has been made in the area. For example, the maintenance of existing roads, the building of new roads, construction and maintenance of the sewerage, street lighting etc. Through the Plusvalia, the seller contributes to these infrastructural improvements. How is this tax calculated? The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership. The higher the catastral value and the number

page 50

of years of ownership, the higher the tax. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. What is the deadline to pay this tax and who is liable to pay? This tax must be pay within 30 days of a sale. If the vendor is not resident in Spain, the buyer will be liable to pay this tax and will hold the funds to pay this on your behalf. The battle in Court against this tax

and sentence of Contentious Court nr 13 of Barcelona, and the latest one of the High Court of Madrid in favour of the supermarket Eroski and against the Council of Leganés. Please do not hesitate to contact Corral&Alcaraz Law Firm if you are selling your property or need help to get your money back on the plusvalia tax you have already paid. We will be more than pleased to help you. Corral&Alcaraz Law Firm Lawyers, Barristers & Accountants

Thousands of taxpayers have claimed against this tax and there are more and more Court sentences against the Authorities, as there are many reasons to find arguments against its unconstitutionality. This can be considered as a nonsense tax after the economic recession, as it does not make sense to pay capital gains when the vendor is actually making a big loss on the sale. The -Traffic matters (vehicle different Councils transfers, Spanish plates etc.) all over the Spanish -Legal assistance and litigation territory only say -Spanish wills and inheritance that they just apply -NIE, Residencia, Nationality what the law says, -Insurances and they calculate -Property conveyancing the tax based on -Translations the rateable value -Fin De Obra Certificates of the property We have the personnel that can assist you in English, at the time of the Scandinavian & Spanish sale, applying a percentage based on Plaza San José Nº2, Puerto de Mazarron the number of years E-mail: solicitors@gestoriacarvajal.com the property has Phone: 968 154 045 or 619 173 626 been owned. In such a way, they create a fiction story as it’s as if properties never decrease in value. This can be considered as a legal contradiction as the way of calculating this tax goes against the principle of equity, justice and economic capacity. Some Court Sentences can be considered relevant: Sentence 00144/2015, dated on 13th of July 2015, Contentious Court nr 3 of Zaragoza, Sentences from the High Court of Justice of Catalonia, sentence 553/2012 dated on 22nd of May 2012 and Sentence 310/2012 dated on 22nd of March 2012

I truly love him and don’t want to lose him but I am also afraid he will show the photos around. Please help me. What I should do? Gertrude Dear Gertrude

Dear Uncle Paul I know I might be just asking this out of annoyance, since this just recently happened. I have a question regarding my friend who has suddenly starting to bail out on me and basically says that she isn’t comfortable going to bingo or quiz nights anymore with me and being in a room full of working class old people. That doesn’t make sense to me and it sounds snobbish. I think she is just making excuses and doesn’t want to be my friend. If so, why doesn’t she just say it? Annabel Dear Annabel I have nothing against the game of Bingo itself, although it seems to be a game for old ladies who sweat, men who can’t get a date and kids who only play for the pure joy of yelling “Bingo!” Quiz nights well I ask you??? Living nightmare…. Regarding your friend, there’s nothing much you can do. Sometimes people change and become spoiled, thus attracting others like them. After a while, it becomes their personality and then they’ll ignore those who they see as inferior. You could try is talking to her. Whenever she’s alone and not busy, go to her and explain how she’s acting and how you feel about it. Tell her you feel it’s hurting both your friendship and feelings. If she doesn’t treasure the friendship as you do, then there is no point in you being hurt trying to keep it. Uncle Paul

He isn’t seeing you as a loved one, but a piece of meat that should be constantly available for his needs... Girl, you know this isn’t a relationship. You don’t want to lose him? WHY NOT? He doesn’t love you, doesn’t treat you with respect and doesn’t even give a rat’s …. about you and your feelings. If you dumped him, what exactly do you think you are going to lose out on? Is being single so scary that you rather be some douche bag’s doormat? How long will it be before he wears you down to the point that you are doing other things that you don’t feel comfortable with just to keep him happy? That’s abusive both sexually and emotionally. Dump him now!!!! I do hope what you have sent him will not identify you. But I do feel a big girl like you should never have worn that basque with trainers!

Every ache and pain I have I magnify into the worst case scenario and think that I am dying. I panic and this causes me massive amounts of stress and anxiety. I find it debilitating. I do not even get out of bed some days and just lay there crying, panicking that there is something very wrong with me and my time is limited. I am not sure how to get out of this prison. I always had this problem but over time, it has become unbearable. Even if I am told I am fine by my doctor, I still worry and panic. What can I do? Lee Dear Lee I wonder if you’ve been completely honest with your doctor about the panic attacks, the anxiety, the many days spent in bed and your thoughts. As you know, what you’re experiencing is not normal, it’s not healthy, it’s not sustainable for a happy life, and you have to take care regarding this condition. So reach out to someone, preferably your doctor, and tell them about how stuck and debilitated you are. They may be able to connect you with the right person to help you But you absolutely must do something , you deserve much more of a life than this. It can change, summon up your bravery - I wish you the best of luck Uncle Paul

MAKING A DIFFERENCE – WE HELP PEOPLE

We are ever thankful for the generosity of people in the area. Your support enables us to continue to help the less fortunate whose lives are eased somewhat with not only the

food we provide for them, but also the clothing, furniture, bedding and even basic toiletries. Last month we took delivery of almost 4000 kilos of food from ‘El Banco de Alimentos de la Region de Murcia’ (The Murcia Region Food Bank) for whom we are authorised distributors. This was gratefully received on behalf of our clients and will be distributed during the months to come. We currently have over 200 people registered and we provide over 60 bags of food every month as well as other essential items. Could we once again ask our supporters and the readers of this

Rehoming dogs is a huge part of our role at AAR. We have rehomed in Germany, Finland, Denmark, Jersey, France, Czech Republic, Holland and of course, Spain and the UK. But this next rehoming is unbelievable, you are not going to believe this but our lovely galgo Serena is going to……..wait for it …….. CANADA!! How amazing is that? Serena came to AAR about 3 months ago with the most appalling leg wound, which was so large and open it couldn’t even be stitched. However under the guidance of Paco our vet she has slowly, slowly healed and been snapped up by a lady in Canada. It is very reassuring that our voice is heard so far away, so come September this lucky girl will be having a very different life. Little Reggi one of Gini’s puppies is back in residence at AAR. After a month in his new home, his new brothers and sisters could not accept him. So it was with a very heavy heart he was returned to us and is available for adoption once again. He really is a little poppet, very small, very cute and very ready to find a new home! Nacho and Maya 2 of our ponies have gone to a foster home until they can be found new owners. Maya came to us last October with her foal Dinky-Doo, having been severely neglected. Their case is currently going through the court process and we are hopeful the person responsible will end up with a hefty fine and possibly a custodial sentence. AAR will not stand for this and will fight every step of the way for justice for these animals. Maya is a super little girl and would make a fantastic first pony. She is broken in and compared to how she looked 8 months ago as shown in the photos is a little miracle. Dinky-Doo too has made a fantastic recovery, not only was he severely malnourished but he had terrible infections on his hind quarters having been gnawed at by the 2 dogs the owner also abandoned!! We thought he was only months old he was so small and weak but he is actually around 2 years old and now, WOW, take a look at the photos and see his progress, both available for adoption . Along with his mother Maya his case is also in court. We currently have 3 cases of gross neglect in court and of course any outcomes will be reported on our FB page and here in The Journal. We were very grateful to receive a donation last month from Fuente Old Guard Golf Society, who on Captains Day who nominated our charity. We were welcome by everybody and also enjoyed a fish and chip lunch, so many thanks to Gerry Mac and Susan for thinking of us. There is a lot going on at the moment but I will save that for next month!! however, we are still looking for more land with accommodation to enable us to take in more rescue donkeys ,ponies and horses , so if anybody hears of anything at all in this area then please contact me. As usual I will be on Camposol B Car Park on Mondays between 11.30-1.30pm where you can drop off any donations or visit one of our shops either in Roldan or in Mazarron Town opposite the Medical Centre, where donations can also be dropped off 10.30-2pm. July was a very busy month for FAST2016 responders, some covering more than 8 shifts of 12 hours. Training in CPR was also carried out this month provided by a training company authorised by the Murcian Heath Authority, so we will have a few more authorised responders. There were a few days and nights that we were still unable to cover. We still need more responders and supporters. It is a very rewarding thing to be involved in, and a great bunch of people. If you call the FAST2016 number and there is no responder on duty there is a helpful recorded message. Remember to call 112 in an emergency. There are a lot of people to thank this month for their continuing hard work and support for this valuable service on this great urbanisation Camposol. Our in house training team, John Scott, Debbie and Mike Bell. And Val Caffin who held the fort for the group while we reformed. Our new trainer who will be authorised by the Murcian Health Authority, Baz Hamilton is busy getting ready to join the training team. Thanks to Paula Klages for decorating the tile that will be placed outside the Club Social. The FAST2016 team received the plaque from Antonio Hernandez Benitez. We are very grateful and our thanks go to the following groups and businesses. On Tuesday 12th July we were presented with a cheque for €650 by the Camposol €650 by the Camposol Golf Association. Golf Association. On Saturday 16th we were presented with a donation of €200 from Vinny at Another World Properties while we were at the Los Palacios Garden Fete. While there Debbie carried out blood pressure checks for passersby. We also had a recruitment stand where we explained what we did on Camposol and of course tried to encourage more volunteers to join us. Look out for the FAST2016 Health awareness day in September, lots of information on how to stay young and beautiful. This will be held at the Cultural Centre. The FAST nurses cannot help with this information but the FAST nurses will be out on Mondays collecting for this great cause. €200 from Vinny They unfortunately are not available at Another World for marriage, although they have been Properties propositioned. There is a trip organised to Alicante castle and Spanish Galleon on the 23 September. Tickets are available from the bookstall on the second and last Friday each month outside T.J. Electrical (Euronics). Contact us on 968970626 for emergencies. Our Admin number is 634309899. Or you can contact by e mail at recruitment@ fast2016.org Our web address is www.fast2016.org it is worth a visit as there is a wealth of information including more health tips.
